A sense of place? Rethinking urban renewal practices of neighborhoods through transformation into creative and livable milieus in diverse socio-spatial pattern; comparative cases of Kreuzberg SO36 and SW 61.
This study is an initial attempt to investigate several dimensions of dynamic and living cities, in consideration with urban renewal practices and daily life patterns. The research is aimed to examine transformation of multi-cultural and diverse cities in a neighborhood scale into better living environments where addresses human needs towards ‘city for all’. As Patrick Geddes has famously noted that ‘’A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time’’, this study addresses the phenomenon of “sense of place” and its factors that shape urban spaces into meaningful and creative places. Thus, which leads the research to highlight the main factors to achieve place sense in relation with physical, behavioral and emotional dimensions. The power of a variety and multi-use in physical and social context towards urban transformations in terms of livable and attractive shared streets and public spaces for the community in relation with other layers of society are consisted in research aim. The study contains a comparative methodological approach which investigates the similarities and differences in everyday life pattern of SO 36 and SW61 neighborhoods of Kreuzberg district in Berlin as macro, Oranienstrasse and Bergmann strasse as micro case study research.

Architect Matthias Wiegelmann, Linlin Yang - lyang@gma-architekten.de Competition content includes 137 ha. for core convention and exhibition area; 42ha. for supporting planning site area: facilities area; 113 or 133ha. for the expansion area and overall urban design and architectural conceptual design for exhibition center and the surrounding. To accommodate the rapid development and growing demand of the convention and exhibition industry in Shenzhen and enhance the industrial and urban competitiveness of the city, it was determined to develop Shenzhen International Convention and Exhibition Center in Airport New Town of the Airport North hub. It is planned to focus on convention and exhibition functions in the project, while concurrently developing supporting commerce and trade, innovation and R&D, international logistics, as well as other function trades and industrial clusters closely related to airport economy in consideration of regional transportation hub including the airport and rail transit. The mission is to provide a complex that can be incorporated into urban life, while meeting the convention and exhibition functions, as well as concurrently hotel, office, shopping, entertainment, and tourism functions in the complex; improving the economic efficiency of the land and the influence of the complex and optimize the supporting services. The consulting service covers mainly overall urban design and architectural conceptual design of the International Convention and Exhibition Center. It includes an exhibition hall with an interior net exhibition area of 300,000m2 for phase I , and 200,000m2 for phase II, together with some outdoor exhibition areas, basic supporting facilities: including conference room, mechanical room, warehouse, convention and exhibition supporting F&B, small retails, and offices and comprehensive supporting facilities: including commercial center, business office, hotel, etc.

The project team von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were successful in winning first prize in the international competition for the new construction of the SF Express Headquarter Building, and the practice has been commissioned with the design of the high-rise officebuilding height of 200 m with a gross floor area of 100,000 sqm. In addition to an efficient functional conception of the skyscraper and its workplaces, the task included differentiated, collectively usable areas for the employees of the company. For this reason, the vertically structured building recedes towards the top in order to create generously glazed foyers called sky lounges, which create a succinct appearance and which are used as sports areas, libraries and conservatories with views across the Bay of Qianhai and the Pearl River Delta. The contribution to the project was made during its construction period for interior greenery concept of sky lobbies and landscape design of the plaza area of the building. The design process is studied with the Feng shui master in China in order to accomplish true Feng Shui ideology and practice into design. The greenbelt, sitting arrangement, stone and water features and the organization of trees were designed as the exterior plaza landscape, as well as continious reflection of exterior landscape is held in sky lounges with stone benches, bambu planting and mound greenery.

Yangming Lake Regional and Urban Development Sponge City Changde Professional Team Work, design competition, Nplus Project Management_Weimar, Germany Duration: July 2015- October 2015 Site; Changde, Hunan Province, China Team leader; Bernd Nentwig- bernd.nentwig@uni-weimar.de, Antonia Hertenantonia.herten@uni-weimar.de Organized by: Chande Urban Planning Bureau Content: Land involved in the design is 12km2 large, including 1.5km2 of water area, 2.8km2 of completed and approved area and 8km2 of land for further development and construction. The urban design competition project contains two phases which are urban research and design process for City of Changde. Design results include analysis report, design specifications and drawings. General planning layout, diagrams of spatial structure analysis function divisions, all urban research studies including historical, economical, geographical, urban structure, climate, traffic structure and sociodemographic structure have been achieved in the research part of the design process. Yangming Lake is redesigned, changes its characteristics in separated areas and develops clearly defined and differently designed zones with various uses. Its shores in the North and West are of an urban nature containing a diverse mixture of uses, promenades and boulevards. The eastern shoreline is more structured and incorporates recreational and cultural functions. The southern part of the Yangming Lake is integrated into the natural landscape of the wetlands. The areas south of the stream bend are the main important elements related to the growth of Changde and determine the direction of future development. Therefore approximately 30 % of the whole area are designated for residential housing or residential living with secondary mixed uses. Size, shape and other conditions define the footprint of the residential areas, which are different in their appearance leading to better orientation and identification by their inhabitants. The landscape is a significant part of arranging and composing the urban score.
Design of Waterfront Buildings Development of Different Forms for Residential Groups Blocks with a maximum of fourteen stories are the elements that determine a ribbon development, which, in their form, give the character of that area. Within that arrangement of large housing estates the building structures differ in their ground plans and facade design – an approach that is at the same time an option but also an intention to create a certain distinction. A diversity in the forms of housing are recommended to allow a certain social control of a mixture of ages and social groups. Several options are offered to approach an eventual uniformity that may be assumed on the site plan: a graduation of height of the ribbon development can be made by leaps or by continuity; either in line or curved, to create such as an artificial and architectural landscape – meant to create the contrast to nature.

Istinye is a district that located in Istanbul, Turkey. The housing complex is designed as mix use structure which provides dwelling for family and single living, social and commercial facilities, It is considered as a living complex which matches all needs such as commercial and trading places, social closed and open gathering spaces, open and closed sport activities.The whole designed structure is 15.000 sqm in the 80.000sqm site. Due to the view of II. Bosphorus Bridge and Istinye marine, the location is considered as a valuable site in Istanbul.
Linear and continious order of housing units are considered as an prevelant conceptiol ideas for providing beatiful view for almost every house and better accessibility. Linear buildings are divided into cores and different house types as it is shown at the buttom.
Initial design decisions are made regarding to topographical features of the sites; the units are placed according to natural slope and greenery. Open spaces are strengthened with convinient connection of pedestrians and vehicle circulation. Existing green places on the north of the site is protected and its connection with southern part of the site is achieved with proposing continious green space and set gardens according to existing topography layers. Landscape is designed with considering green continuity for all housing units.With using slope and topography lines, set gardens are created for residents. Social places are gathered in ground floor to provide better accessibility for residents of complex. Housing areas are designed considering with wide range of living conditions from single living to house for five person. Five different housing types are created. Balkonies are designed for all housing types for bedrooms and living areas with three different sizes. For bedrooms small French balkony type is used and for others , larger and deeper balconies are designed with shading elements. For other windows,wooden blinds are utilized for sun protection.

It is designed as social space and housing project for family and single living. There was a hospital complex which is allowed to demolish, yet, the historical building and the chapel which are needed to be protected. It was a initial condition to provide connection and visual axis for those two and historical building has been designed additionally without damaging facade details. The site is located on busy street which is called ‘Untere Laube’ in Konstanz. It is surrounded by old residential buildings. Across the street city center begins, so that it is considered very central. Therefore, social and commercial purposed spaces are located on ground level to maintain social life & interaction. It isaimed to mixed multi living for the project which consist of single, couple, couple and children and elderly people. The form of the building is defined accourding to visual axises of old historical building and chapel and to take maximum advantege from natural sunlight during the day. Sunpath from east-west axises have been taken initial step to benefit from natural sunlight in every stage. Set- back shaped facade designed in courtyard facades are designed to provide more sunlight. Sunlight and natural ventilation into the flats are also provided with lighting shafts and small loggias located on courtyard facades.

The project was a part of the internship held in Japan as research and design project. The site is located in Nishinomia where is one of the artificial islands in Osaka. The process is started with designing a part of the island in urban scale. All circulation is designed from the beginning including car, pedesterian and bike roads. The island is redesigned with considering residetial, social, green and commercial spaces. The most important point of the project was to design water ways and canals in the island. My approach to the project was to make people feel water element inside of the island as much as possibe with avoiding to be closed environmet from the ocean. The project was both city planning and highrise housing complex designing. As a second phase, in chosen part of the island, highrise residential buildings are designed with highly giving significance to interaction with canals and social environment.
The master plan is enriched with additional large and small canals for different purposes and well-soluted road network. It is designed the way that small island in the island to make people feel more that they live an island. The overscaled island is tried to divided into small pieces to make it from city scale to human scale. Additionall, it has been given importance to public squares, green areas , bicycle roads and pedesterian roads. The zone is designed as lowrise and highrise residential and social spaces. The main point was to create smooth transitions between highrise and lowrises, additionally, to find a better way to combine them with social places and public squares. Another important consideration is to create better environment with canals. Small canal between highrise blocks is designed in order to create more interaction inside in human scale. Setback terrace designed was initial condition for the project according to new Japanese designing situations. All terraces are desined in a system that none must have overhead.

The project is runned individually and it is carried out in the third year of bachelor as a mixed used complex design. The site is located the main centeral district called Beyoglu in Istanbul and it is a particular neighborhood with its antique collection and vintage furniture stores. The main conceptual idea was to develop a complex which matches residential, exhibitional,social and commercial purposes. It is designed for people who are owner of antique & vintage stores in the district. There has been created livable environment that has workplaces, houses, public areas inside. The idea is started to create new housing modules and units which includes an exhibition place for antique dealers. Therefore, it would be a living and working space for craftman. In that project public and private space notions are dealed with as integration of dwelling and exhibition. Units are designed in a clustred manner on large slabs to allow people move between them and visit exhibitions. Than, exhibition parts became movabe parts of the houses to maximize circulation.
Facade Design The holes that created on slabs and facade are inspired from antique pieces of art. Their smoothness and curves comes from Baroque and Rokoko furniture and architectural details. The material of corten steel is used for feeling ‘oldness’ inside just like all exhibited pieces. It is designed semi-transparent. It allows visual axis to outside. Corten steel pieces are combined with vertical element that attach it. Horizontal layers of steel ordered with creating holes when it is looked from the outside. These holes are repeating themselves in other floors as well. Curved hole patterns are abstracted from original retro furniture pieces.

Primary & Secondary School in Edirne Academic Work, BAU, Turkey Project Area; Edirne, Turkey Duration; September 2012- January 2013 Tutors; Gül Asatekin, gul.asatekinbahcesehir.edu.tr The project area is located in the west end in Turkey near the Greek border. The site is surrounded by slum- like residential buildings and there is a highschool building next to it. The objective was to create educational complex environment in this low income neighborhood where children can also have playground. The project is enriched with sport facilities and green ares for students. ‘Flexible learning environments’ was prevelant conceptual idea for classroom designing. It is aimed that creating productive spaces for children providing internet access and small library-reading corners into the classrooms. Existing road is protected and bridge is developed for circulation on the upper floor. That allows to divide the complex into two parts which are primary and secondary schools. Gathering and social places are designed in courtyards due to the security reasons for children. Bridges are funtioned as a semi open classrooms and open library concept to make referance transitions during the day. There was a historical heritage (broken minaret) in the garden. Open classroom idea is developed around the heritage with archeological garden.

Public Venue Academic, Individual Work, BAU , Turkey Duration: March 2012- May 2012 Site; Besiktas, Istanbul, Turkey Tutor; Burak Altınısık - burak.altinisikbahcesehir.edu.tr ‘‘Venue’’ is located in Besiktas, one of the most crowded centers of Istanbul. The structure is designed as social interaction space for people. It contains exhibition space, conferance hall and observation area on the top. Linear structure is located in the middle of the site, yet it allows the flow with the elevated floor. The main feature of the site was its closeness to the nearby environment. That allowed me to create observation point between two highrise structures. In that way, beautiful view of Bosphorus is provided from closeness. The site is surrounded by buildings and it is a challenge to design a social gathering space in that hidden place. From the front facade which faces sea side there was a gap between nine story high buildings. This gap allows to create observation mass on the top connected with lower structure. The transition on the facade from glaze to concrete refers to the physical condition of the site and the existing chaos in the location.
The interaction venue is composed of art exhibition gallery, conferance meeting room and observation space. It can be reached observation floor with two escelators. My initial concept is coming from experiencing the place. Since, this site is located between new luxuary street and old messy street. This creates conflicts. The aim was to make people experienced when they climb to upper floor escelator to experience that contrasts. For that reason, all structure is designed transperant.
