Preliminary Planning
Project Overview West Haven Intermediate is a school in West Haven, Utah, that teaches grades 5-6. This remodeling project highlights the media center and standard classroom. Each space was designed with the six pillars of wellbeing in mind. Vitality: safe environments that invite movement and support respite. Optimism: encourage challenge and celebrate the learning process. Mindfulness: create sensory richness, allow for refuge, and ensure exposure to diversity. Authenticity: enable choices and selfdetermination, encourage self-expression, and foster a sense of value. Belonging: provide spaces that allow students to be seen and heard, help connection and community, create welcoming and inclusive spaces. Meaning: encourage individual and communal creation and inspire awe.
Concept Grades 5 and 6 are a period of growth for students, both physically and mentally. With the concept of growth, this space will help students feel comfortable in this often difficult-to-navigate time of growth in their lives. This design balances the feeling of childhood and upcoming maturity.
Research Flexible classroom design optimizes teaching methods and morphs as teachers modify spaces based on personal style, subject matter and students’ needs. Whether lecturing, demonstrating, facilitating or personalizing your teaching method, you’ll find proactively designed furniture easily adjusts to support teaching goals.
As educators prepare students for the complex global society and economy, the 4 C’s (creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking) become crucial for success. Obtaining these skills requires students to flex between working alone, in groups or all together. You’ll find products that enhance mobility, support a range of postures, and provide multipurpose solutions.
Space design might translate into basic shapes like rows, u-shapes or clusters, but agile space unleashes the other three quadrants of the Learning Environment Framework. Intuitive, easy-to-use classroom furniture empowers spatial and tool organization, connects students and teachers, and stimulates learning, engagement and wellbeing. Today’s students intermix low- and high-tech info mediums whether working with other students or their teachers. Low-tech mediums include paper-based reading and writing, brainstorming and class discussions. Hightech mediums use laptops and digital displays. Flexible design is crucial. It allows students and teachers to move fluidly between interpersonal, analog and digital modes of communication whether working alone, in groups or as a class.
