Cherokee Indian tribe

The Cherokee Indians were one of the largest of five Native American tribes who settled in the American Southeast portion of the country. The tribe came from Iroquoian descent. They had originally been from the Great Lakes region of the country, but eventually settled closer to the east coast. Their language is an Iroquoian language. The Cherokee actually lived in cabins made of logs instead of the stereotypical tee pee. They were a strong tribe with several smaller sections, all lead by chiefs. The tribe was highly religious and spiritual. When the American Revolution took place, the Cherokee Indians supported the British soldiers, and even assisted them in battle by taking part in several attacks. The Creek and Choctaw tribes also assisted in the battles on the British side. In 1828, gold was discovered on the Cherokee’s land.

Myths: 1, the milky way 2, what became of the rabbit 3, why the mink smells

The milky way Some people in the south had a corn mill, in which they pounded the corn into meal, and several mornings when they came to fill it they noticed that some of the meal had been stolen during the night. They examined the ground and found the tracks of a dog, so the next night they watched, and when the dog came from the north and began to eat the meal out of the bowl they sprang out and whipped him. He ran off howling to his home in the north, with the meal dropping from his mouth as he ran, and leaving behind a white trail where now we see the Milky Way, which the Cherokee call to this day Gi`lï'utsûñ'stänûñ'yï, "Where the dog ran." Why has this myth been created? this myth was created to explain were the term milky way came from What does it explain? This myth was created to show how they look upon the milky way and how they see it. Also it has the name milky way because the corn mill was in a white (milky) color and the dog ran away (way).

Literary element: it wants to know the significant of the dog and whats his personality

What Became Of The Rabbit The Deer was very angry at the Rabbit for filing his teeth and determined to be revenged, but he kept still and pretended to be friendly until the Rabbit was off his guard. Then one day, as they were going along together talking, he challenged the Rabbit to jump against him. Now the Rabbit is a great jumper, as every one knows, so he agreed at once. There was a small stream beside the path, as there generally is in that country, and the Deer said: "Let's see if you can jump across this branch. We'll go back a piece, and then when I say K没! then both run and jump." "All right," said the Rabbit. So they went back to get a good start, and when the Deer gave the word K没! they ran for the stream, and the Rabbit made one jump and landed on the other side. But the Deer had stopped on the bank, and when the Rabbit looked back the Deer had conjured the stream so that it was a large river. The Rabbit was never able to get back again and is still on the other side. The rabbit that we know is only a little thing that came afterwards. Why has this myth been created? this myth was created to show how the deer made the rabbit jump over the river so he can be stuck and the deer can become the best jumper. What does this myth explain? It explains how they do with some of there allies if they allies do something or keeps something from them they will betray them by. Literary elements:

Why the mink smells The Mink was such a great thief that at last the animals held a council about the matter. It was decided to burn him, so they caught the Mink, built a great fire, and threw him into it. As the blaze went up and they smelt the roasted flesh, they began to think he was punished enough and would probably do better in the future, so they took him out of the fire. But the Mink was already burned black and is black ever since, and whenever he is attacked or excited he smells again like roasted meat. The lesson did no good, however, and he is still as great a thief as ever. Why has this myth been created? it was created to show how wants you are labeled as a thief or somebody that does something wrong you will always be labeled as that even if you are dead. What does it explain? It explain how the Cherokee tribe went about things. It explains if the Cherokee tribe new you were thief or caught you stealing this will be your punishment. Literary elements:

1. What I found interesting was that the tribe came together over a fire and told story’s and that’s how some of the myths came alone. 2. I was able to connect with project because I was always interested in the Indian tribes and this tribe really caught my eye and some of the myths that were listed I was once told. 3. The difficult part of this project was listing some of the literary elements for my project
