IN HER FAD

words | flor leaño The “major” difference between Venus Raj and other crowned beauties is not her svelte figure, which has not changed even after competing for the Miss Universe crown in 2010, nor her real Filipina complexion. She is a standout because she is a total package of intelligence, charm, and unwavering spirituality that can’t usually be found among beauty queens. The glitz and glam of show business should have been enough for her to accept offers here and there. Instead, she went back to school and is now about to finish a master’s program in Community Development at the University of the Philippines Diliman—a wise choice indeed for a cum laude like her. Fair Magazine took the opportunity to talk with her before she gets busy with the data gathering for her thesis. Here are some of the details of our talk. Describe your typical day. I stay at home and cook. I also read the books of my favorite author, David Platt, who is an American pastor. He is currently the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board and the author of the New York Times Best Seller Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream. What keeps you busy nowadays? Just recently, I became busy with the Miss Universe pageant. School work also keeps me up and about since I am about to start with the data gathering for my thesis and, hopefully, I will graduate in June. My thesis is entitled “Spirituality in Disaster Risk Reduction Management” where I will show that spirituality plays a big role in times of disaster. I also do a lot of hosting and I’m definitely occupied with church activities. What kind of physical activities do you do to stay fit? Do you have any special diet? I play badminton every Monday to stay fit, but I do not have any special diet. Since I cook my own food, I just add salt and pepper to add taste and flavour. MSG is a complete no-no, but as for sweets, it’s okay to have some but not a lot. Complete this sentence: Filipina beauty is… Filipina beauty is unique. We are individually unique, especially physically. Since we were colonized by many races in the past, we cannot say that Filipina beauty is distinct by just one mold. The common denominator is our character which is based on the way we were raised. We are also spiritual that makes us distinct. Our deep spirituality gives us confidence that makes us stand out. How do you define success? Success is not just achieving what you want in life, but how well you have survived the challenges that came and how humble you have become in the course of your journey. If you learned something from the experience, you can say that you have succeeded in that goal. How has your perspective in beauty and life changed now that you are a Christian? First, I grew up as a very insecure woman considering my background, like not being able to meet my biological father and being bullied in elementary and high school. When I started joining beauty competitions, the insecurity heightened because people became more particular about my looks. Some tried to put me down since I am not a mestiza. But when I came to know the Lord, everything changed. Now, security no longer

comes from the opinion of people and their dictates regarding beauty. I finally feel secure because of my relationship with the Lord. Besides, the Bible says that we are “wonderfully made.” What are the makeup products that you can’t live without? Lipstick! I think that it can make me look more polished. And since I always wear makeup, I must always use a facial wash—ideally something that can also remove makeup. Why did you decide to take a master’s degree? Taking a master’s degree was not a part of my plan after I competed for Miss Universe in 2010. But some people encouraged me. They said that this would give me more career options after I finish it. What are your career plans? I would like to earn my master’s degree first, then plan more after. After all, my relationship with Jesus changed my perspective about my career. I always pray that wherever the Lord would take me, I would impact people’s lives. Who keeps you inspired? The Lord keeps me inspired. People ask me about love life and I always answer that time will come. I am not yet ready for it and I think God knows the perfect time for it.

“Success is not just achieving what you want in life, but how well you have survived the challenges that came and how humble you have become in the course of your journey. If you learned something from the experience, you can say that you have succeeded in that goal.”—Venus Raj

undeniably looks regal. Every move she made during the photo shoot could make it to the magazine’s cover. It is not surprising though, especially that she was crowned Binibining Pilipinas-World in 2007. She must know every fab move for the cam to capture.

More importantly, Maggie said that her most astounding feat was being able to prove that beauty queens are more than just being fit and fab. “Joining The Amazing Race confirmed that beauty queens also work and strive hard to win. We can be active and competitive yet remain beautiful,” she pointed out.

At first, Maggie will give you the impression of a “damsel in distress,” like the other pretty faces in Tinseltown. But as her story unfolds, she will leave everyone in awesome admiration. She may not have the looks for it, but she can be the epitome of strength and determination; yet she is not in any way intimidating like other beauty queens with a prima donna attitude. She even talks gay lingo, like charot, and is not at all shy about it.

Most of the time, people think that beauty queens can’t be dared to do something physically and mentally demanding, but Maggie and her partner changed these misconceptions. “Even the producers thought we would quit and would never survive,” she revealed.

The former beauty queen compares the blossoming of her career to the advent of spring, likens it to a rose that begins its life as a bud and that slowly unfolds into one lovely flower. The success she enjoys now came from hard work blended with her innate ability to strategize. She was a dark horse in The Amazing Race Asia Season 5. Nobody would have thought that she and her partner Parul Shah who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Tourism in 2014, would win the race. Here is more of her inspiring story that is worth being written in a book. Maggie never seems to run out of energy and takes on opportunities with commendable zest. Before competing in The Amazing Race, she watched over 120 episodes of the show’s previous seasons, with versions from the US, Canada, and Asia, to get some clues on the tasks waiting for her. “In The Amazing Race, your inner strength naturally comes out. You’ve got to give it a serious thought and lay out plans to win. You will be judged on how fit and clever you are,” she explained. She and her partner travelled six countries and twelve cities. They raced over 12,000 kilometers, had to eat exotic food and did incredibly difficult tasks. Nonetheless, her queenly poise remained even under extreme pressure. “They expected me to be the first one to cry and back out especially when we had to eat something funky, but since I am naturally competitive, I proved them wrong. I will never go into a competition not wanting to win. If that meant shaving my head, I would shave my head by all means,” she said with all conviction. As she recounted the tasks she had to go through, one would feel how sweet the victory was. “Many times, I woke up with body pains and still had to go through the unexpected routes and challenges for the day. Add to this the fact that I could not call home and did not have money at all. But you see, all the tough challenges made joining the race more deeply fulfilling,” she exclaimed.

Classics never go out of style. People often love wearing trendy fashion, but sometimes it does not really fit them. Although I love Mango and Top Shop, I like to buy something worn by just few girls in town.” Just recently, she received a message from one of the producers of The Amazing Race America congratulating her and Parul for their performance as they were able to finish the competition with cleverness and grace. And because of this, they were able to change the way beauty queens are perceived— now, this is the change that beauty queens need to keep proving. ON KEEPING HER LOOKS

Maggie’s skin looks supple and fresh, of course. Not even a trace of stress can be seen although she is busy with her commitments. Thanks to the Caveman Power Diet, also known as Paleolithic Diet, which does not include grains or bread and entails munching on greens, fruit, honey and lean meat. It increases energy and the ability to burn fat while strengthening one’s immune system and making the skin clear and glowing. Maggie also shuns away from soda and has never had a drop of it in ten years. She avoids powdered juices and recommends a heavy dose of water. In particular, she suggests drinking alkaline or distilled water. “I’d like to visit my dermatologist at the very least once every two weeks to make sure that my skin is nice and prepped. I recently bought a whole bunch of face masks and put them on my face every night,” she shared. She is not picky when it comes to the brand of her face masks, but she loves those that contain hyaluronic acid, which has powerful anti-aging properties and hydrates the skin, even the oily, sensitive, or breakout-prone skin. She also likes face masks with mandelic acid which is a go-to anti-ageing ingredient that

accelerates cell renewal and removes dead skin. She said that there is nothing wrong with drugstore beauty products as long as one knows the ingredients that get into their skin. For her ultimate beauty tip, she said: “Less is more. I don’t bombard my skin with a lot of cream.” However, Maggie can’t live without her lip liner and lipstick; although she can survive without her mascara. She also uses a mousse kind of blush, and as long as she has her blush and lipstick, she is good to go, proving that she lives on the principle of “less is more.” With regard to what she wears, Maggie goes for classic but sexy cuts and pieces. “Classics never go out of style. People often love wearing trendy fashion, but sometimes it does not really fit them,” she said. Although she loves Mango and Top Shop, she likes to buy something worn by just few girls in town. One of her favorite local designers is Mark Bumgarner who happens to be a good friend. She was one of his first muses when he was just starting. She also likes Charina Sarte because of her relaxed style and boho designs and Patty Ang for her classy fashion sense. ON A BETTER, BRIGHTER CAREER

“Let’s admit it. The show business is fully saturated. That’s why I want to penetrate the wider Asian market and try to make it big outside the local industry. I have been here for 14 years and I think it’s about time for me to grow somewhere,” she said. This is almost a reality now since she and Parul have just gone to Taiwan, then to Singapore, to start on a show to be aired in other Asian countries. Hosting, which aptly fits Maggie’s bubbly personality, will definitely be her next main domain. In March, she’ll hit the stage of the Philippines’ Next Top Model as its host. The Philippines’ Next Top Model is the country’s edition of America’s Next Top Model, a long-time running reality fashion show for all aspiring female models who dream of becoming a super model. The show ultimately picks one deserving super model who passes the standards of respected judges from the glittery world of modelling. This isn’t entirely a new turf for Maggie as she used to be an MTV VJ, the first Philippine beauty pageant titleholder to become one. ON SUCCESS

“You’ve got to work really hard to reach success. Never stop learning because if you stop learning, you will be left out. Always try to improve and study yourself— know your strengths and weaknesses and learn from them,” Maggie firmly advised. In order to succeed, she said that people must always believe in their talents, skills and capabilities. Even if one would receive a hundred “no,” someone will say “yes” eventually, so a person must work harder and be more persistent. She also pointed out that success does not happen overnight. Often, it takes time. And her final advice is: “Once you get there, do not forget where you started.”

Ms. Edelweiss Tubog, one of the yoga teachers at Yoga+ in “Standing Bow” pose.

Fun, homey and inclusive—these are the best words to describe yoga+ found in key cities in Metro Manila. Teachers and staff make learning fun and make the students feel at home with their warm hospitality. Everyone at yoga+ sincerely wants the best for their students. Old, young, athletic, shapely or not, everyone is welcome to experience a healthier and better lifestyle. Most people try yoga for flexibility, weight loss and physical fitness. Regular yoga practice stretches and tones the body muscles and also makes them strong. It also helps improve body posture when you stand, sit, sleep or walk. Nonetheless, these people’s primary reason for doing yoga will probably change after reading this article. Ms. Dinah Salonga, the managing director of yoga+, explained that yoga is more than a physical activity. It unites the body, mind and breath in perfect harmony. When one experiences complete harmony, the journey through life is calmer, happier and more fulfilling. Thus, when yoga+ was established in 2011, the founders thought of a more holistic approach in fitness. “yoga+ inspires people to become a happy, healthy and better human being,” Ms Dinah revealed. How can yoga make people happier? First, let’s take a look at how yoga can relieve stress. We can go to malls to unwind after a long day at work, but there is so much noise around that we just leave the place feeling the same weight in our heart and mind. We can visit peaceful places away from the city to deal with stress. But peace can be found right within us and we can take a mini-vacation to experience this any time of the day— in yoga classes. yoga+ offers Guided Meditation classes to help our clients in dealing with stress,” Ms. Dinah said. “In the process of meditation, we can let go of the information overload. It can give a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits physical and emotional well-being. If you choose not to go for the Guided Meditation, doing the usual yoga routines can of course help relieve stress since it promotes relaxation, which is the natural opposite of stress. Yoga poses also provide physical benefits and can help strengthen and tone

muscles and loosen up the connective tissues in the shoulders and back,” she added. “At yoga+, we teach our students the proper way of breathing,” Ms. Dinah said. It may sound too simple at first but proper breathing is truly beneficial. Did you know that deep and proper breathing reduces excessive anxiety levels by increasing the oxygen in the brain? As you relax your body, you may find that the breathing brings you clarity and insights. Moreover, long deep breathing increases pleasure-inducing neurochemicals in the brain to elevate moods so you stay happy. If you have been having health problems, yoga can help a lot by improving immunity. Our system is a seamless blend of the body, mind and spirit. An irregularity in the body affects the mind and, similarly, unpleasantness or restlessness in the mind can manifest as a health issue. On the other hand, yoga poses work like a “massage” for the organs to keep them healthy. If you are overweight, the extra oxygen that you breathe in while doing the yoga burns up the excess fat more efficiently. If you are underweight, the extra oxygen feeds the starving tissues and glands. Increased oxygen also boosts energy levels and increases stamina. “When our students leave, they carry their calmer state of mind when they go home so they deal better with their spouses, parents, and friends,” Ms. Dinah shared. A mind that is relaxed, happy and contented can deal with sensitive relationship matters better. Thus, arguments and little matters do not disturb their mind. So to be happy, healthy and better human being, Ms. Dinah invites everyone in their Makati, BGC and Podium outlets. “We’ll see you on the mat soon,” she ended. Some people’s life stories show that, at times, what is thought of as impossible is in fact possible. Sometimes the turn of events happens unexpectedly and sometimes with a whole bunch of faith. Jewel Mische, a woman after the heart of God, was once in the limelight for being in the show business. However, because of her deeply-rooted Christian values, she found it hard to blend in and decided to spare herself the tragedy that sometimes befalls those in the entertainment industry. As a woman with such Christian values, Jewel thought that no man could ever meet her standards and it was okay for her to be single for the rest of her life. Time has a magical effect though. Little did she know that her dreams as a young girl would later on turn into a reality. She is now married to Alister Kurzer, the man of her dreams, has moved to Michigan, and is living the life many girls would want to live—traveling around the world and living the life they have together. Truly blessed as a couple, their sojourn is filled with fond memories that make their married life sweeter and more blissful. 1. Why do you travel? Seeing the world provides the opportunity to see the incredible displays of God’s craftsmanship and an education that’s absolutely impossible to get in school, plus travel always means adventure! 2. What is in it for you? Dream come true! I’ve always imagined and daydreamed about traveling with my husband ever since I was young, and now it’s a reality. 3. Lesson that you’ve learned in travelling? Traveling isn’t as luxurious and smooth as advertisements and glamorous Instagram accounts make it out to be. When you travel, you’re leaving your comfort zone and no matter how well you plan a trip, someway somehow there is something that will go wrong. It won’t always work exactly as you have planned. So I have learned to be patient, to adjust and be more flexible when traveling. 4. What is your favorite country and place? Why? This is a tough question! I’ve been to many great countries 16

and I love all of them for different reasons. But I don’t think I can pick a favorite just by judging how beautiful the place is because many of them are equally beautiful to me! I just can’t pick one! So, I’ll have to go by personal reasoning. Honestly, however great the other countries may be, nothing is more special to me than Israel. Israel is not necessarily the most picturesque country I’ve been to, but it is a country of immense beauty, history, and culture. It is also the biblical Holy Land, the place where Jesus’ birth, ministry, death and resurrection took place. For someone like me who is in love with Jesus, to walk down the same roads that He walked on during His earthly ministry is beyond special. I also love reading the Word of God and the pages of my Bible have been more alive and real since then! 5. Any tips on how you prepare your things? I make sure I pack things I wouldn’t be willing to buy or spend on while traveling. I also travel light, and I bring clothes I can mix and match. You can survive with just few things and get by just fine. 6. What is your fashion statement in travelling? The only real elegance is in the mind. COMFORT reigns supreme! 7. What are your five must-haves while traveling? My favorite Bible, travel documents, toiletry bag, cellphone, and Alex. 8. How do you maintain a good skin while traveling? I hydrate, keep my hands off my face, and try to be consistent with my skin care regimen—at least cleanser for my face in the morning and at night. 9. How do you maintain a Barbie-like figure? I don’t know about Barbie-like figure . . . but I do know I am at my healthiest right now! I stay fit by the 80/20 rule, 80 percent healthy diet and 20 percent exercise. 10. Your advice for couples who are planning to travel?
