Cannabis and Weight Management
Just when you thought this miracle plant couldn’t get any better, it turns out that it may have a positive effect on weight management. So, how exactly can cannabis help you maintain a healthy body weight, especially when it tends to cause “the munchies”? Firstly, the main compounds in cannabis (THC and CBD) interact with the bodies endocannabinoid system to produce a variety of results, including: ● Reducing inflammation ● Reducing pain, including chronic issues ● Managing mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, ADD/ADHD, etc ● Preventing Alzheimer's, Dementia and other brain deterioration ● Managing symptoms of multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, autism and more! With all of these amazing effects, it is not hard to imagine that marijuana might also be able to help regulate your blood sugar levels and manage insulin sensitivity to prevent diabetes and help maintain a healthy body weight.
Cannabis and Weight Management There has not been a lot of research surrounding cannabis and insulin sensitivity, blood sugar levels and BMI yet, but what is out there is very promising so far.
Cannabis and Blood Sugar, Insulin Levels Using data collected by a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2010, researchers found a significant link between regular cannabis consumption and improved blood sugar levels. In fact, individuals who consumed marijuana regularly showed the following results: ● 16% lower fasting insulin levels ● 17% lower levels of insulin resistance ● Higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ● Smaller waist circumference In a 2011 study from the American Journal of Epidemiology, it was determined that despite cannabis consumption increasing appetite, individuals using cannabis are less likely to be obese than non-users. This is in addition to having trimmer waistlines and lower cholesterol levels, regardless of age and gender. Researchers are still not one-hundred-percent sure what causes this positive correlation with body mass, but believe it is due to the THC compound. In a study done on mice, it was found that the THC did not affect mice already at a healthy weight but it did cause the obese mice to lose weight. The thought behind this is that THC creates changes in gut bacteria and better regulates it for improved digestion and weight management. Studies done in Poland, Italy, Hungary, Canada and the UK have also replicated this data, continuing to prove a positive correlation between cannabis and weight management.
Cannabis and Stress The cannabis plant has an impressive ability to manage anxiety and stress, which in turn helps to reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is known as “the stress hormone and can play a role in weight gain as chronic stress will actually increase appetite and hunger. Cortisol levels rise during times of stress causing increase insulin levels, leading to lowered blood sugar and a boost in cravings for unhealthy foods, such as sugary treats or fast-food. Managing stress levels is vital not only for overall health, but also for managing weight and moving towards healthy food options.
