Around our City
Mayor’s Message Council continues to prioritise its finances to make sure we keep our rates low and spend wisely on improving infrastructure and services for the community.
Stage 1 of Fairfield Showground work starts
Council has worked hard to manage its finances, resulting in an anticipated $3.1 million operating surplus for the 2018/19 financial year. We have delivered a lot for the community while still having one of the lowest council rates in Sydney. Because of this strong result, we are well positioned to make the coming year one of our biggest yet. The 2018/19 Operational Plan highlights include transforming the Fairfield Showground into a Multicultural and Sporting Centre of Excellence. I am excited that work has already begun and I look forward to finally returning this incredible but under-used asset back to the community, where it will become the premier community hub for festivals, events and sporting activities in Western Sydney. There will be further expansion of the Aquatopia Water Park in Prairiewood, widening of Smithfield Road into four lanes, construction of the Hughes Street Car Park in Cabramatta and a new community park in Villawood.
New multi-storey car park will be built in Cabramatta
Council will spend almost $63 million renewing and building new infrastructure including $13.6 million on improving local roads and $2.6 million on new and upgraded footpaths. In addition, Council will continue to provide high quality services for our community such as youth and leisure activities, waste services, parks, open libraries and many other programs. The Operational Plan will build upon everything we have achieved over the past few years. We are committed to making Fairfield City a great place not only to raise a healthy, happy family, but also a destination families from all over Sydney will want to visit.

AQUATOPIA EXPANDS
Council is working hard during the winter months to increase the splashtacular factor at Aquatopia for future seasons. The water park’s visitors are in for an exhilarating treat, with Council building a new 20-metre tall, six-lane straight racing water slide near the existing slide tower at Aquatopia. The new slide will be twice the height of the existing slides, perfect for the thrill seekers in the family. Council will also install the Fishpipe, which is a big rotating ball filled with water that visitors can jump into and get pummelled around - it’s a bit like being inside a giant washing machine. We are also investigating the possibility of a wave pool in the future and we’ll be building more cabanas and barbecues to meet demand.
CREATING MORE OPEN SPACE FOR VILLAWOOD/CARRAMAR Council identified the need for more open space in the area to meet the growing needs of our City. Council will deliver additional open space for the residents of Villawood and Carramar to ensure we have a healthy and active community. The new park will be at the corner of Karella and Koonoona avenues where six residential blocks will be transformed into 3200 sqm of green space for families. The new Villawood/Carramar park may include a playground, kickabout space, picnic facilities and circuit path. Council will be consulting with residents so we can make sure the park meets your needs. 4
SMITHFIELD ROAD UPDATE Council will also begin work on Smithfield Road, which will be a win for the 25,000 drivers who use it daily, meaning less time stuck in traffic and more time with families. The upgrade doubles the number of lanes along Smithfield Road between Polding Street and Elizabeth Drive to provide two traffic lanes in both directions. This will make for more efficient and safer travel. The upgrade was funded under the Local Roads Package, part of the joint State and Federal Governments’ Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan. Projects like this help to create jobs while improving safety and traffic flow on our local roads.

RECENT FESTIVITIES Council regularly celebrates our City with colourful family events throughout the year. In autumn we celebrated: Lunar New Year More than 8,000 people turned out to Council’s huge annual Lunar New Year festivities in Cabramatta, with headline act PAW Patrol leading a two day family-friendly cultural celebration.
Lunar New Year
The event filled the streets of Cabramatta with spectacular colour, excitement, sights and sounds. Living Cultures Festival With more than 50% of the City’s population born overseas, Council is proud to celebrate the City’s cultural diversity. The popular Living Cultures Festival returned to Fairfield City Museum & Gallery in March to recognise Harmony Day, with people sharing their cultures and traditions through performance, clothing, music, arts, crafts and food. FLAME Festival Fairfield City’s Fairfield Live Art, Music and Eats (FLAME) Festival was a huge success, with more than 700 people flooding Fairfield city centre in April.
Living Cultures Festival
Council partnered with local businesses to deliver an exciting festival that showcased Western Sydney’s talented musician community. Youth Week Thousands of local young people got involved with Council’s huge NSW Youth Week program in mid-April, which included an outdoor movie night, climate action workshop, wheelchair sports and more. The week-long festivities started with Council’s Bring It On! Festival in April, attracting more than 4,000 people to Fairfield Showground for a day of incredible live entertainment, rides, youth service stalls, delicious food and giveaways. Performers included X-Factor finalist Vlado and Rachael Fahim. Council’s inaugural Fairfield Warrior competition had people completing an obstacle course challenge to win a cash prize.

CABRAVALE PARK LOCAL GOVERNMENT IMPROVEMENTS WEEK Follow us on social media @FairfieldCity
Residents can now play popular local sports, badminton and table tennis, with Council investing more than $100,000 upgrading Cabravale Memorial Park near the Cabramatta City Centre. There are two new professional-sized badminton courts in the park, along with a custom-built permanent table tennis table for residents and visitors to use. Park users now have the opportunity to be more active with the addition of the courts and table tennis table as well as the existing basketball court and outdoor fitness equipment. Other improvements included the installation of a Sydney Water refill station for refilling water bottles easily. It also has a bubbler and a ‘dog-bowl’ feature, so dogs on leads can easily access fresh water. A fence was also installed to match the heritage green bollards and garden beds were replanted.
