Letter from the Headmaster John R. Munro, Jr.

Dear FCDS Community, At Fairfield Country Day School, we look to develop the “whole boy”: socially, emotionally, and morally. Our boys engage with each other and with their teachers in meaningful interactions that guide their learning experience. Research shows that relational learning, or the impactful connections between students and their teachers, in all-boys schools leads directly to improved academic and character performance. Through a combination of cutting edge technology, a vibrant arts program, and a rigorous academic curriculum, our boys experience varied connections throughout each and every school day. None of this would be possible without our talented and dedicated faculty. They connect with the students on a daily basis, inspiring them with lessons that both challenge and encourage the boys to succeed. Our new Cliff Paige ’62 Learning Commons, a direct result of your support of the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign, has allowed us to expand our boys’ interactions beyond the classroom to a space where they are able to explore new technologies and collaborate with students of all ages. Though our forward thinking approach to technology has resulted in increased levels of student engagement, it’s the power of our long standing traditions that defines our culture of caring at Country 2 FCDS Annual Report 2013-14

Day. Family style lunches, Link Day, public speaking, the Blue Door, and many other time-honored traditions remain entrenched as hallmarks of the FCDS experience. I am excited as I look to the year ahead and begin working on the goals laid out by our strategic plan. Your continued financial support of Country Day allows us to provide the best possible environment for our students to develop and thrive. It allows us to maintain our commitment to the mission of the school, our commitment to the boys, and our commitment to you. Thank you for your generosity and for sharing the lesson of giving with your family. Your contributions demonstrate your dedication to their future success. It is with great pride that I share with you the 2013-2014 Annual Report. Sincerely, John R. Munro, Jr. Headmaster

Letter from the Treasurer Alan Offenberg

Dear FCDS Family and Friends, It is my pleasure to provide you with an overview of FCDS’ 2013-2014 fiscal year. This was an exciting year for us as we surpassed our goal for the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign. We are grateful for the contributions of the entire FCDS community and look forward to your continued support of the School. The financial health and performance of FCDS is strong and the Board of Trustees remains consistent in their desire to judiciously oversee the School’s finances. In addition, we finalized the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan, which outlines the School’s objectives for the next five years and is designed to not only allow FCDS to maintain its current standard of excellence, but also position the School for long-term success. The School’s financial position relies on many factors. Enrollment has a major impact on the financial health of any school, and I’m pleased to report that enrollment at FCDS is thriving. The recent enhancements to the School’s physical plant, as well as the continued development of our leading curriculum, have strengthened FCDS’ already strong position. However, these improvements could not have occurred without the support of the FCDS community, since resources beyond those provided by tuition are required to meet those needs. Going forward,

your continued support of the Annual Fund and Capital Campaigns will be critical components in allowing us to better serve our boys and expand the opportunities available to them as part of the Country Day experience. As we move into 2014-2015, we continue our commitment to preserve FCDS’ strong financial performance by conservatively managing the School’s finances while providing the faculty and administration with the resources essential to delivering an exceptional education to your boys. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, administration, and the boys, thank you for your dedication to Fairfield Country Day. Sincerely, Alan Offenberg Treasurer

2013 Bronson Award Recipient Rob and Cindy Citrone Alan and Frances Offenberg

The Bronson Award was created to honor members of the Fairfield Country Day community who through their dedication to Country Day have shaped our school in lasting and impactful ways. The Citrones and the Offenbergs have demonstrated an incredible level of commitment to FCDS. Both have worked diligently on behalf of the school to help make it what it is today. In 2005 the Citrone family joined the Country Day Community. Cindy and Rob have two Country Day boys, alum Nick, class of 2009, and Steele, class of 2017. Throughout these last nine years, the Citrones have committed themselves to helping FCDS with a special focus on technology. Their gifts of resources, time, and talent have been transformative in providing Country Day students with state of the art technological resources, a comprehensive technology plan, and trained faculty to utilize these resources. Cindy and Rob have also given of themselves to Parents’ Association events and the Blocks for Love project with the Middle School boys. As of result of the success of the Blocks for Love project, Cindy is one of the few, perhaps only, parent to receive a blue slip!

Left to right: Rob and Cindy Citrone; Headmaster John Munro; Frances and Alan Offenberg

Since they first joined Fairfield Country Day in 2003, Alan and Frances Offenberg have given tirelessly of themselves. As parents of two Country Day boys, alum Ian, class of 2013, and current student Ricky, class of 2015, Alan and Fran have made Country Day a better school for all of our boys. For many years Alan helped with our fundraising efforts as an Annual Fund Class Captain and now serves as the Treasurer of the Board, having joined the Board in 2010. Fran has also been an integral part of the FCDS community for many years. Thanks to Fran’s efforts as chair of the school store, all of our boys had the right school supplies. Fran has been involved with the Parents’ Association in numerous other capacities as well, such as the hospitality committee and as a room parent. Country Day is extremely fortunate to be the beneficiaries of Alan and Fran’s generosity. On behalf of all us at Fairfield Country Day, thank you to the Citrones and the Offenbergs for your extremely generous and transformative support.

What is the Annual Fund?

Communication

Like most independent schools, Fairfield Country Day School conducts an annual appeal each school year to raise unrestricted funds that are allocated to the operating budget. These funds close the gap between tuition income and operating expenses. Annual Fund contributions account for approximately 6% of the general operating budget. Support of the Annual Fund is critical to help meet some of the immediate financial needs of the school. Every student benefits from a strong Annual Fund in their daily experiences at FCDS.

Annual Fund Donors 2013-2014 Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2013-2014 Annual Fund. Your donations supported approximately 6% of our operating budget, which tuition alone does not cover. Your gifts allow us to maintain our commitment to the high standards we have set for ourselves and to support the priorities and initiatives that help us prepare our boys for future success. Parents, alumni, grandparents, friends, corporations, and foundations are all important to the success of the Annual Fund. Participation from the entire FCDS community reinforces the strength of our school and allows us to meet the evolving needs of our boys.
