Dear FCDS Community, In the pages of this FCDS Annual Report, you will learn about the numbers that reveal strengths and accomplishments of our school community in the 2015-2016 fiscal year. You will meet the new leaders on our Board of Trustees. Just as important, we hope you see an expression of the values inherent in our work as we carry out our mission of educating boys. This year, for the first time in our history, we accomplished an incredible goal. Every FCDS family supported the School by participating in our Annual Fund. We are grateful for this visible sign of confidence our families have in our efforts to educate their boys. This outpouring of generosity reflects more than a willingness to make a charitable donation to Country Day, it shows the collaboration between our parents, our teachers, and our school. Contributions are a symbol that we are working together to embrace our core competencies and that we all are willing to live by our motto and be judged by our deeds.
Letter from the Headmaster John R. Munro, Jr.
Setting this generous example for our boys is an excellent lesson in empathy and the true meaning of community, coming together for the common good. Our school creates a unique learning environment and we teach our boys through a range of experiences in the classrooms, on the stage, on the field, and in the community. Your support ensures the level of excellence in our day to day programming as well as a secure future for the next generation of FCDS families. Thank you to everyone who supports FCDS. Without you, our donors and volunteers, we would not be able to provide the distinctive educational experience that makes Country Day a leader in all-boys education. This Annual Report honors and celebrates your contributions. With gratitude, John R. Munro, Jr. Headmaster
FCDS Annual Report 2015-16 1
Dear FCDS Community, It is my pleasure to provide you with an overview of FCDS’ 2015-2016 fiscal year. This was an exciting year for us as we accomplished what most independent schools are unable to do, and that is to have 100% participation in the Annual Fund from not only the Trustees and faculty and staff, but from every parent as well. We are grateful for the contributions of the entire FCDS community and look forward to your continued support of the School. FCDS has a long history of balanced budgets and sound financial management. The School’s financial performance continues to be healthy, and the commitment to conservative oversight of the School’s finances remains a hallmark of the Board of Trustees. In addition, we achieved meaningful progress towards meeting the goals outlined in the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan, which will enable FCDS to maintain its current standard of excellence and position the School for long-term success.
Letter from the Treasurer Alan Offenberg
Your gifts enabled us to make improvements to the School’s physical plant, in particular this past year the renovations to the skating rink. Your support provided faculty and staff meaningful professional development opportunities and provided the necessary funds for enhancements to our curriculum. While the majority of our revenue comes from tuition, monies earned from auxiliary programs and philanthropic support are critical to enabling the School to meet our mission. Going forward, your ongoing support of the Annual Fund will be vital in allowing us to better serve our boys and expand the opportunities available to them as part of the Country Day experience. As we move into 2016-2017, we maintain our commitment to preserve FCDS’ financial performance by conservatively managing the School’s finances while providing the faculty and administration with the resources required to deliver an exceptional education to our boys. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and the boys, thank you for your dedication and generosity to Fairfield Country Day. I invite you to follow the remarkable things happening at FCDS on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Please join us in promoting our boys’ accomplishments by “liking” and sharing our posts. Sincerely, Alan Offenberg Treasurer

Annual Fund Donors Thank You to Everyone who Participated in the 2015-2016 Annual Fund. Whether this was your first year of giving or your twentieth, your generosity enables our boys and our school to thrive. Donors allow us to give our students a voice; whether through public speaking, performing in a concert or play, cheering for their teammates on the field, or building relationships over family style lunches. We invite you to visit a classroom, explore a science lab, or admire student artwork to see your gifts in action. Every donation enriches our community. Thank you for your support of Fairfield Country Day.

Parent Class Participation We Did It...100% Parent Participation An anonymous donor presented FCDS with an exciting opportunity during our 2015-2016 Annual Fund — if we achieved 100% parent participation in our Annual Fund by June 1, 2016 we would be awarded a generous gift of $25,000. FCDS had already reached 100% participation among the Board of Trustees and the Faculty and Staff, and now the parents were challenged to reach that goal too. Fun incentives were built in along the way — a dress down day for the boys and the Super Duper Weenie truck providing lunch at Field Day. With a $25,000 gift on the line, every FCDS parent showed their generosity and dedication to our school by making a gift.
Thank you parents for your support of the 2015-2016 Annual Fund!

Paige ’62 Legacy Fund The Paige ’62 Legacy Fund is an endowed fund restricted to the support of faculty benefits, including but not limited to, housing and tuition remission which makes it possible for FCDS to attract and retain the most talented faculty. The fund is named after retired Head of Upper School and FCDS alum Cliff Paige ’62. After graduating from FCDS, Cliff came back through the Blue Door in 1987, this time as a teacher. During his twenty-nine years teaching at Country Day, he played a significant role in the success of the School, from helping maintain such cherished traditions as student-faculty lunches and walking through the Blue Door, to implementing cutting edge practices such as laptop integration and the daily e-blotter.
The Paige ’62 Legacy Fund honors not only Cliff’s impact on the school, but the legacy of each boy graduating from Country Day. This fund was established to celebrate each and every one of our graduates and recognize the legacy they leave behind. For this reason, the parents of the graduating class make their Annual Fund contribution to the Paige’62 Legacy Fund.

2015 Bronson Award Recipients Gerry Pearce, Sr. ’60 and Gerry Pearce, Jr. ’84 The Bronson Award honors members of the Fairfield Country Day community, who through their dedication and support, have shaped our school in lasting and impactful ways. The 2015-2016 Bronson Award was presented to father and son FCDS alumni, Gerry Pearce, Sr. ’60 and Gerry Pearce, Jr. ’84 at a reception hosted at the home of Trustee Patrick Shaw and his wife Finley. Gerry Pearce, Sr. is a graduate of the class of 1960 — and no surprise to those who know him, the recipient of the 1960 Hopkins Award for sportsmanship. He has served many roles during his tenure at FCDS; alumni, parent of Gerry ’84 and Greg ’88, Trustee, Honorary Trustee, and now grandparent of Charlie ’15 and Zach ’17. As a member of the Board of Trustees for fourteen years from 1975 to 1989, Gerry helped lead the way as Co-Chair of the 1996 Campaign: Realizing Our Vision. This effort was instrumental in moving the school forward by creating a space for our boys to participate in the arts and music, renovating our gymnasium, and growing the School’s endowment. He has been a generous supporter of the Annual Fund since the 1980s. Gerry’s wife, Genny, was a member and head of the Mother’s Club (now Parents’ Association) and spent many years working on and leading the famous FCDS consignment sale. From the beginning, Gerry and Genny realized the importance of legacy and passed on their philanthropic spirit to their family. Gerry Pearce, Jr. graduated from FCDS in 1984. He has served on the Board of Trustees since 2002, and is currently a member of the Development Committee. Gerry was a key member of the Strategic Planning Committee and his clear vision of what makes FCDS great and what will lead us toward an even brighter future, helped shape our long-range plan for the School. He and his wife, Margot (Head of our Middle School), have two sons, Charlie ’15, and Zach ’17. They have been loyal supporters to FCDS, donating to the Annual Fund for sixteen consecutive years and giving countless hours to school events and activities.

FCDS Parents’ Association
FCDS parents play a special role in their sons’ education and in the success of our school. Recognizing the importance of the parent/school relationship, the FCDS Parents’ Association (PA) creates a strong partnership to enhance the connection between families and the School. The PA actively encourages parent participation and offers many ways to get involved. From the speaker series to the Book Fair, being a room parent, helping in the Learning Commons, or attending and helping at PA sponsored social events, there are a range of opportunities to support the students. Parents often say that volunteering enriches their own lives as well as their sons. (Left-Right) Finley Shaw, Melanie Master, Dana Lawlor, Heidi Kuchta, Kelly Laferriere and Stephanie Kodweis

Parents’ Association Day of Service In April 2016, the Parents’ Association organized FCDS’s first Day of Service. Over 200 students, parents, faculty and friends volunteered their time to this inaugural event. Volunteers worked in teams on numerous projects throughout the community. Fairfield Audubon, Operation Hope, Bridgeport Rescue Mission, and the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital were just a few of the places where members of the FCDS community lent a hand. Our tradition of serving the community is an integral part of the School’s culture. The significance of our motto, “We are judged by our deeds,” is demonstrated through the school-wide stewardship program, which provides age-appropriate opportunities for students to address the needs of others while learning about underlying social issues. The School’s connection to the community is an essential part of our character and it was wonderful to have so many people supporting the Day of Service.

Men’s Night 2016 In May 2016, Fairfield Country Day hosted our first annual Men’s Night. Thanks to the efforts of event Chairs, Cliff Paige ’62 and Rob Russo ’90, over fifty alumni and friends came to the FCDS campus to mingle, reconnect with classmates and former teachers, and make new friends. Peter and Tara Cowles, FCDS parents and founders of Aspetuck Brew Lab, provided beer samplings and FCDS’ own Chef Kevin Stawitz served a delicious steak dinner. Alumni in attendance ranged from the class of 1962 to the class of 2007.
The Gregory Society is named in honor of Fairfield Country Day School’s founding headmaster, Laurence W. (“Pope”) Gregory, who served as headmaster from 1936 until his death in 1946. The Gregory Society recognizes those individuals who have made provisions for Fairfield Country Day in their estate plans. You can help preserve the spirit of Fairfield Country Day School well into the future by becoming a member of the Gregory Society. There are many types of gifts that prove to be financially beneficial to both the donor and the school.
