Campus Life Friday, Oct. 14 is the last chance to order "Prep Fights Cancer" t-shirts, which benefit the Pink Pledge initiative to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer. Order t-shirts for $12 at www.fairfieldprep.org/pink, and pick up at Prep Pride store. Wear this shirt to school on Wednesday, Oct. 26, and at Nov. 4 home football game. In Intramural news, Spaghetti Monsters beat Air Traffic Control to win Ultimate Frisbee championship. Mark your calendars for the 9th Annual Father Son Dodgeball Tournament Oct. 29.

Prep’s 3V crushed the field of 14 crews to retain their title as fastest in New England. 2V & 4V won silver medals.
John Starrett scored late in JV soccer match but Prep’s effort fell just short in the 2-1 loss. Joe Stuhlman was named the Man of the Match for heroism in the face of overwhelming odds.

The Sailing team has been in the Prep community for many years, helping young sailors develop their skills and giving them a chance to race against other schools. The sailing team is a fall and spring varsity sport which practices out of Pequot Yacht Club in Southport. The fall season started just a week into school and started sailing immediately. The practices, led by Coaches Marc Jacobi and Chelsea Crowley, focus on skills including boat speed and tactics used in team racing.

The racing season started quickly after the start of the school year when five sailors went to the Great Oaks Qualifier in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The event was two days and had heavy winds for both. The Jesuits sailed well in the tough conditions, placing second in four of eleven races. Prep ended up third in the regatta, qualifying for the Great Oak National Championship in New Orleans, Louisiana. Prep will send four sailors to compete in the regatta in late November. By Jamie Paul

Bellarmine Corner PSAT – Oct. 19, 2016 Next Wednesday, sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT, also known as the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This tests ability in Math and English, allowing students to gauge how well they can score on a standardized test such as the SAT. Sophomore and Junior guidance discuss the differences between the SAT and the ACT. A student’s score on the PSAT can help them to make the decision about which test to take their junior year. Additionally the PSAT can qualify highscoring juniors for acceptance into the National Merit Scholarship. However, admission into the National Merit Scholarship is competitive. Nearly 1.5 million high-school juniors take the PSAT while only 15,000 eventually become National Merit Finalists. This means finalists score around the 99th percentile. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards $2500 to finalists, and many colleges award substantial merit scholarships to recipients of the National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT is not reported as the SAT and ACT are, yet hard work on this test will allow students to not only understand where their strengths and weaknesses are on standardized test scores, but may also lead juniors to potentially become National Merit Scholars. Sophomores and juniors who intend to score well on the PSAT may consult the packet they were given in Guidance Seminar, see their counselor, or go to collegeboard.org for more details. New Faculty Interview
Ms. Stanley Campus Ministry Q: What position do you serve at Prep? A: I am the Director of Christian Service. Q: Describe your education background. A: I earned a BA in Sociology with a concentration in Human Service, Health and Social Justice from John Carroll University and a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University. Q: What made you want to come to Prep? A: My job is really what drew me to Prep. I knew I wanted to work in Campus Ministry, specifically Service Learning and Immersion work, so when the Director of Christian Service position at Prep was posted, I excitedly applied. Q: Why did you choose to work at a Jesuit institution? A: The Jesuit emphasis on the connection of faith and social justice was pivotal in my faith journey and something I hope to share with others. Plus, I’m mildly obsessed with Ignatian Spirituality and the concept of finding God in all things Q: Can you describe a course/teacher that inspired you at any time in your academic career? A: Any course I’ve taken where the professor’s passion for their subject was palpable deeply inspired me. One of the professors who most inspired me in my studies was Dr. Gina Hens-Piazza. In addition to being a remarkable Scripture Scholar and teacher, Dr. HensPiazza serves as a PA at an inner-city medical clinic during her free time because she noticed a disconnect between teaching about social justice and working for social justice outside of the classroom. Q: What are your immediate impressions about the Fairfield Prep community? A: Everyone has been super welcoming and friendly. I feel like I’ve been accepted into a big family and am so grateful for that. By Cole Simons

We are looking for pictures for the cover page of the newspaper. If you have a picture that you would like to see on our cover page, then feel free to send it to us but it must be appropriate and it must show the Prep Community. It can be anything from a picture of a club to a picture of a recent Prep event.. We will also include the name of the person that submitted the photo in the paper. You can send your photos and any further questions to either of our Co-Editors in Chief Evan Bean at p19ebean@faifieldprep.org or Jamie Paul at p19jpaul@fairfieldprep.org.
At Prep we do a lot for the community. Whether it’s the Mite Box or community service we are always helping out. Over the past week or so, we have also been participating in a food drive for the Thomas Merton Center. This center is also a homeless shelter and is always looking for food. So, Prep did a schoolwide food drive to help out. Teachers advertised it to all of their students and also came up with fun incentives. For instance, in Mrs. Smith's theology class anyone who brought in 2 items got bonus points for an upcoming quiz. As you probably saw a few days ago, this food drive was a huge success, with many plastic bags filled with food for the needy. By John Godino *********************************************************** Freshmen Rally Day Next Wednesday, Oct. 19 Freshmen Rally Day is essentially a preview for the freshman retreat which takes place March 10 and 11, 2017. Rally Day also provides an opportunity for freshmen to be introduced to the upperclassmen who will be their small group leaders. The event runs from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on the Fairfield Prep Campus.

****************************************************** Album Review Wild World by Bastille You may know Bastille from their hit song Pompeii or their new single Good Grief. Wild World is much different than their debut album, Bad Blood, which focused on world problems and the story of a troubled man. Wild World is full of life and energy and it just makes you want to explore the world. My personal favorite track from this album is The Currents with its animated intro with the guitars to the refrain. The intros to some of the songs have excerpts from old T.V. shows or movies and they fit with the theme of the song, which is an interesting blend of both modern and old elements. Although the length of this album is 65 minutes, there are a total of 19 songs, averaging about three minutes a track. Don’t let that discourage you from listening to them though. Every track is unique and very intriguing. For their second album, Bastille is definitely on the right track (pun well intended). This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite albums of the year.
