SOUNDINGS, THE WEEKLY REPORT

Campus Life Reminder: All seniors must be prepared for their part in the Halloween Trunk or Treat on Monday, October 31st! During this time of year, we tend to be caught up with fall decorations and Halloween festivities, but October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Fairfield Prep has its own way of raising awareness about breast cancer, including Prep’s one and only Mrs. Gorab, a guidance counselor for upperclassmen at Prep, and resident expert on Prep’s fight with cancer.

Prep Vs. Cancer

Prep vs. Cancer started last year, in 2015. Mrs. Gorab is a personal supporter of the Norma Pfriem Breast Cancer Center here in Fairfield. The center had a town wide event to commemorate their 20th Anniversary. Their mission was to flood the town of Fairfield with pink everywhere, and they involved all the schools in Fairfield. Merchants, policemen, and firemen wore pink ties and pink vests, cars were painted pink and the bulbs in the street lights were changed to pink. It was at this time that Mrs. Gorab became the liaison for Fairfield Prep. In order to help the Norma Pfriem Care Center, Mrs. Gorab and Fairfield Prep came up with "Men for Mothers" black and pink shirts, which raised $1,900 for the center. The center takes any patient regardless of their background, race, religion, and ability to pay for treatment. Because of the money we raised, the care center is able to provide chemotherapy, surgery, and other types of therapy to help their patients. On October 26th of this year, Prep had a dress-down day where the faculty and student body could wear the black and pink t-shirts in support of Prep vs. Cancer, and to raise awareness. Fairfield Prep will also be selling pink rally towels at the football game on November 4th, but most importantly Fairfield Prep had a representative from the Norma Pfriem Care Center come down to Prep and talk to all the freshmen about both Testicular and Breast Cancer to help raise more awareness. The most important part of Prep vs. Cancer is what it stands for, which is to fight against a disease that has effected so many, and to raise awareness. Proceeds help The Norma Pfriem Breast Cancer Center, so that they can continue to offer relief and treatment to those fighting this By Brenden Martinez illness.
