Adrienne A. Johnson ’91 Trish Comey Preston ’80 DINNER

Investing in Scholarship at Fairfield — Creating Opportunities for our Students Living our mission, elevating talent, and promoting diversity — these are the outcomes of generosity for student scholarship. As a modern, Jesuit Catholic university, Fairfield is committed to helping those in need, and we recognize that scholarship assistance often provides a singular opportunity for a life-changing education. We understand the transformative power of education for scholarship recipients, and also see the ways in which a diverse group of students enrich campus life. Scholarships bring together a uniquely gifted population of undergraduates, attracting exceptionally talented young scholars while promoting a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student body. Furthermore, scholarships inspire our students to persist in their studies, embrace the academic experience, and look toward the future with hope. These students are deeply grateful for the support of benefactors like you who believe in them. Your generosity fosters a sense of inspired motivation in our scholarship recipients. Since 1988, the annual Fairfield Awards Dinner has raised nearly $20 million for the Alumni Multicultural Scholarship Fund and other endowment scholarships to help students realize their full potential through a Fairfield education. We thank you for your partnership in building on that record of success by your participation this evening.

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: It is with great pleasure that we return this year to an in-person celebration for our 33rd annual Fairfield Awards Dinner program. This annual celebration is a high point in our University calendar, an opportunity to stand back and celebrate members of our community who have made an outstanding contribution to their friends and neighbors, to their colleagues, and to our Fairfield family. It is also a moment when we renew our fundamental commitment to our core mission as a Jesuit and Catholic University, which is to provide the transformative education to men and women of promise, and to offer this gift to those who need our assistance and support. At Fairfield, providing access to education is a fundamental priority, as is our commitment to inclusive excellence — ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or economic circumstances, can find a place in our learning community. In recent years, we have significantly increased our outreach to first generation college eligible students, increasing our scholarship support for students from Jesuit and Christo Rey high schools, increasing our scholarship pool — particularly through our Alumni Multicultural Scholarship Fund — and developed educational programs that support incoming students who may need additional academic resources. We have also made a commitment to develop a new academic unit — Bellarmine College — that will offer an associate’s degree to students from low-income families and under-represented communities, primarily in the surrounding Bridgeport region. This initiative has been undertaken in partnership with the Diocese of Bridgeport, and represents a major step toward increased educational access for young people in our region. We deepen this commitment to inclusive excellence as we rise in national prominence and reputation, enjoying the highest application numbers in our history, and now having moved in our classification from being a regional, comprehensive institution to a national, doctoral university. As we grow, our capacity to extend a helping hand must also grow. That is why your support is so critical — our mission is expanding and we must in turn evolve in order to answer that call. As Fairfield advances in step with a rapidly changing world, we remain faithful to our mission of outreach, forming our students in spirit, body, and mind, and providing support for those who need our assistance. We do this mindful as ever that St. Ignatius embraced education as a mission for the Society of Jesus because it was revealed to him that forming young persons of promise was the most advantageous way to transform the world for the better. Thank you for joining us this evening as we honor tonight’s awards recipients, all of whom are exemplary members of our community, and thank you for your commitment to this mission, and our pursuit of the magis as we rise as the model of the modern, Jesuit Catholic University for the 21st century. Warmest regards,

Mark R. Nemec, PhD President Professor of Politics

MEET THE PRESIDENT OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

HUGH MORGAN ’69, P’94 Hugh Morgan majored in marketing at Fairfield, but it was the University’s emphasis on social justice and being a man for others that left the deepest impression on the 1969 graduate. That’s what compelled the Long Island native to join the Army after graduation and then embark on a 40-year career with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Living in nearby Rye, N.Y., Morgan decided again to turn his attention to others. Not long before retiring from the Federal Reserve, Morgan noticed the Fairfield Alumni Association was looking for board members and he signed up for a three-year stint. Soon, he was re-upping for three more years. As president, Morgan leads the board in advancing volunteerism, contributions, and attendance at alumni and University events. In 2019, he presided over his first meeting, albeit via Zoom. Morgan encourages alumni who want to get involved, or just learn more about the Alumni Association, to contact him or any of the Alumni Board of Directors.

MEET THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT SPEAKER

KASSANDRA ALMANZAR ’23 As the first in her family to pursue nursing, Kassandra Almanzar did not know what to expect. Coming to Fairfield, she knew she had to take advantage of every opportunity presented because the costs associated with going to college weighed heavily on her and her family. “Fairfield gave me the opportunity to pursue my dreams.” Being a recipient of the Alumni Multicultural Scholarship provided Almanzar with access to make those dreams come true, and being accepted into the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies is making the future she envisioned become a reality. “The nursing program at Fairfield has helped strengthen my character, and has taught me many lessons related to our Jesuit values such as cura personalis — caring for the whole person.” Almanzar became a resident assistant during her sophomore year at Fairfield and is on the Dean’s List.

fter graduating from Fairfield University in 1982 with his accounting degree in hand, Mike Archbold began his career in public accounting at PriceWaterhouse. Soon after, he moved into the retail sector. Over the subsequent 30 years, he held leadership positions at national retailers, such as AutoZone, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Talbots. As chief financial officer and later president and chief operating officer of The Vitamin Shoppe, he was instrumental in taking that company public. Archbold later served as CEO for Talbots and GNC Holdings (General Nutrition Centers). He also co-authored the book, Smart Regulation: Changing Speed Bumps into Guardrails, an analysis of business regulations and their effects — both positive and negative — on economic growth. In 2019, Archbold volunteered as the startup CEO of The Council for Inclusive Capitalism with The Vatican, a collaboration of CEOs and leaders from around the world. The Council, which meets annually with His Holiness Pope Francis, was created in response to the moral imperative to pursue profit in a manner that builds more inclusive and sustainable economies. The group has over 185 members and collectively represents over $10.5 trillion in assets under management and $2.1 trillion in market capitalization. “The Council recognizes that capitalism has lifted billions out of poverty,” Archbold explains. “Our aim is to harness the power of capitalism to make systemic changes that address remaining challenges, such as climate change and access to opportunity, and create a world that is more fair, inclusive, and sustainable.” Having established the Council as CEO, Archbold remains active as a member of the Council’s board of directors. Today, Archbold is a trustee for the Committee for Economic Development (CED) of The Conference Board, based in Washington, D.C., where he also serves as the program director for the CFO Council: Fortune 250. CED is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, business-led public policy center that addresses national policies promoting sustained economic growth and development. Since its inception in 1942, CED has advised on education reform, the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, the Marshall Plan, and The Bretton Woods Agreement. Currently, it focuses on several issues including sustaining democratic institutions, fiscal health, infrastructure, technology and innovation, and healthcare reform. Archbold has taught classes at the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, and has been a member of the School’s Advisory Board since 2021. He also sits on the board of Express, Inc., and chairs its audit committee. Committed to Catholic education and his Catholic faith, Archbold has said that his priorities are “God, family, and country. I try to prioritize these values in my personal and business life.” He currently resides in his native Long Island, New York, with his wife, Laura, an elementary school math and science teacher. They have four grown children and two grandchildren.

ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD

Maureen Errity Bujno ’90

I

t was probably no surprise that Maureen Errity Bujno followed older Errity siblings Michael ’86 and Deirdre ’88 to Fairfield, but it was certainly fortuitous. The University has benefitted greatly from her dedication, leadership, fundraising efforts, and personal support over the years.

A committed volunteer, Bujno joined the Advisory Board of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business in 2021. She served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2009–2015 and was board president from 2014-2015. Prior to that, she served for six years on the Trustee Advisory Council. Bujno has lent her talents to the Our Promise Campaign, and has been a frequent volunteer for her Reunion committees and the Fairfield Awards Dinner committee, which she co-chaired in both 2018 and 2019. She is active in recruiting efforts at Fairfield, and has attended countless receptions, athletic games, and networking events. After her junior year at Fairfield, Bujno secured a summer internship at Deloitte & Touch LLP (“Deloitte”) and was recruited there after graduating with her accounting degree. She has spent her entire 31-year career at Deloitte, initially in the Audit & Assurance business. Bujno later transitioned to the mergers and acquisitions group, and in 2004, moved into corporate governance, which remains her current area of focus. Today, as Audit & Assurance Governance Leader, Bujno leads the governance offerings for many of Deloitte’s most complex audit clients. This includes advising on the role of the board, emerging board agenda topics and leading practices, all in the interest of helping to drive the basic principles of transparency and accountability. She is the author of numerous articles on corporate governance and has been recognized for three years by NACD Directorship magazine as one of the Top 100 Influential Professionals in corporate governance. “The Dolan School, coupled with the core curriculum, provided me with a strong foundation of skills and knowledge that has carried me through my career and the broader activities in which I have been involved,” she says, adding that she assists Deloitte in recruiting new talent to the organization. “The values Fairfield students bring to Deloitte in terms of their intellectual curiosity and Jesuit ideals based on ethical values and giving back are tremendous assets.” Bujno’s memories of her years as an undergraduate are infused with the beginnings of the lifelong friendships she was developing. “I have such fond memories of living in the dorm, and then at the beach, with a great group of people. There is still a large group who are my best friends,” she says. “We text regularly, strive to get together at least once a year, and always plan ahead for our class reunions to make sure we can all get back on campus.” Bujno, along with her husband Steve, her father Michael, and her siblings recently dedicated the Dean’s conference room in the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies in memory of Maureen’s mother Dolores, a former nurse. “Giving back is the right thing to do,” says Bujno. “Being a Fairfield alumna is a huge part of my identity and I will continue to do everything I can to share the strong values and success of our institution. I couldn’t be prouder to be a Stag.”

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY/ADMINISTRATOR AWARD

Rev. Gerald R. Blaszczak, S.J.

I

n asking the Rev. Gerald Blaszczak, S.J. to take on the roles of alumni chaplain and special assistant to the President last year, University President Mark R. Nemec, PhD noted Fr. Blaszczak’s warm and engaging manner and the high esteem in which he is held throughout the Fairfield community.

“He has tirelessly reached out to our alumni, faculty, and staff in their hours of need and celebration over many years, and has been of great assistance to me in my efforts to spread the good news of our continued strength and ascendancy as a University,” Dr. Nemec shared. “I am deeply grateful that he has agreed to serve in this capacity.” Arriving in 2009 as University chaplain, he was known for his commitment to unity and interfaith dialogue, and made it his first priority to ensure that students of all religions were able to live out their faiths while on campus. “Catholic identity doesn’t require the obscuring of other religious traditions,” he explains. “Rather, it invites them.” In 2011, Fr. Blaszczak was promoted to vice president of Mission & Identity. The same year, however, he was unexpectedly called to Rome to serve as Secretary for the Service of Faith at the Jesuits General Headquarters. This prestigious post required him to travel to all corners of the world, ensuring that Jesuit communities were doing all they could to promote a growth in faith and interreligious dialogue in the face of rising secularism and authoritarianism. He returned to Fairfield in 2018 and assumed the role of vice president of Mission & Ministry until he was appointed to his current position in 2021. “Fr. Gerry is a wonderful mentor,” said Rev. Denis G. Donoghue, S.J., director for the Murphy Center. “His vision and wisdom are great gifts that he has shared with me throughout the years. I am deeply indebted to Gerry and incredibly grateful for all that he has done for both me and the Murphy Center.” Fr. Gerry’s experiences as a student helped shape the man and Jesuit he is today. He was deeply marked by his high school experience at Dallas Prep. “The Jesuits there had a commitment to inclusivity long before there was any widespread acceptance of racial justice — not as a political matter, but as a moral imperative,” he recalls. “In the face of opposition from the community and alumni base, they continued to challenge us to question assumptions and create relationships.” Ordained in 1979, Fr. Blaszczak studied philosophy in Germany and earned a PhD at Harvard. He has taught at Fordham and LeMoyne Universities and Hekima College in Nairobi, Kenya, where he lived in one of the townships and continues to be overwhelmed recalling the kindness, warmth, and hospitality the Kenyans showed him. His facility with languages is legendary, and he is proficient in French, German, Spanish, and Kiswahili, and can read a dozen more, including Aramaic, Coptic, and Hebrew. As special assistant to the President, Fr. Blaszczak has been involved with the launching of a new academic unit dedicated to providing strong educational and professional preparation to underrepresented urban youth, with the intention of providing a smooth transition to a four-year college or meaningful employment.

“ When parents are involved, it elevates Fairfield’s mission and helps get the word out about the school. This has been a place where my kids were happy… They’ve had great experiences, met great people, and both had a great education. Given that, we’re happy to be ambassadors.”

PARENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

N

either John nor Lori Berisford had a connection to Fairfield University until daughter Lane ’20, surprised her parents by deciding to attend. “She attended Admitted Students Day and never looked back. She just had a warm feeling about the campus and the people she met,” Lori recalled.

The next year, their younger daughter Liza ’21 followed her sister to campus, and John and Lori plunged into their roles as active and committed volunteers. Serving as Parents Leadership Council (PLC) co-chairs, they regularly attended Alumni and Family Weekend events, PLC breakfasts, and spring events. Lori hosted one of the first Fairfield Moms Brunches, and served as a parent ambassador throughout the years. John engaged in a panel discussion on the benefits of liberal arts education in the business world for the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. “Both John and Lori were leaders through example which led to increased parent giving over their tenure. They never said no to anything we asked of them, always ready to promote the importance of supporting Fairfield. Their willingness to help us achieve our goals at every fundraising opportunity, including Parent Leadership Challenges and STAGiving Days, truly made a significant impact on the growth of parent philanthropy here at Fairfield,” said Julie Tuozzoli, director of parent engagement and philanthropy. “When parents are involved, it elevates Fairfield’s mission and helps get the word out about the school,” says Lori. “This has been a place where my kids were happy, and that’s the most important thing. They’ve had great experiences, met great people, and both had a great education. Given that, we’re happy to be ambassadors.” The Berisfords met some 30 years ago while working at PepsiCo. John spent 22 years at the company where he helped lead the launch of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Group as a public company and later served as chief human resources officer. Currently, he is president of S&P Global Ratings, a credit rating agency, and is a director on the boards of the two largest legal entities. He also serves as board chairman of CRISIL, an S&P Global company. Lori retired from PepsiCo after 20 years in human resources. Since then, she has been actively involved in every aspect of her community in Ridgefield, Conn. from her daughters’ grade school to The Center for Empowerment and Education, the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, The Ridgefield Playhouse, Founder’s Hall, RVNAhealth, and ACT of Connecticut. Most notably, she has been committed to SPHERE, an organization that serves 60 adults with developmental, cognitive, and intellectual disabilities. Since 2014, she has been president and board chair of the organization. In 2021, she was recognized as Ridgefield’s Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club of Ridgefield.

POSTHUMOUS SPECIAL RECOGNITION

George F. Keane ’51

A

native of Danbury, Conn., George Keane graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School in 1947 and Fairfield University in 1951. He was a loyal alumnus over the years, sharing his business acumen and financial counsel while serving on the Board of Trustees. The University lost a wise and true friend when he passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. “During George’s time on the Board, we were in the middle of a major campaign that raised over $137 million,” recalls George Diffley, then vice president for advancement and now, special assistant to the President. “While he was a benefactor of Fairfield, he always understood that raising funds wasn’t just for things like new buildings. He knew that a need was always going to be financial aid, and we emphasized that in all our fundraising efforts.” Keane strongly believed in the Jesuit mission of service to others. “He was always a gentleman, and truly cared about the University,” adds Diffley. After graduating from Fairfield, Keane attended graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, then spent a number of years sharpening his financial skills with TIAA-CREF and Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. in New York. He went to Washington D.C. to get the Institutional Management of Funds Act passed through Congress and signed by then President Nixon, revolutionizing the funding and investment practices of colleges and nonprofits in America. In 1971, Keane founded The Common Fund (now Commonfund), a nonprofit asset management company that manages investment strategies for endowments, foundations, universities, and other mission-driven institutions. Initially begun with a grant from Ford Foundation, Commonfund has quite literally changed the way nonprofits and smaller colleges handle their endowments, giving them access to the financial expertise they would have been unable to afford otherwise. From its early days with just three people in a tiny New York office, Commonfund today advises 1,500 institutions and manages over $27 billion. Keane served as chief executive until 1993, when he was named president emeritus and senior investment advisor. He retired from Commonfund in 1996. After this “first” retirement, Keane went on to join Trigen Energy as chairman, leading the company for six years and eventually taking it private. He served as a director of the United Negro College Fund for 12 years, receiving the Frederick D. Patterson award for his service. Keane was also a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the New York State Common Retirement Fund from 1985 to 2000. After the dot-com bubble burst, he advocated for the creation of a new index in place of the S&P 500, and worked with Research Affiliates of California in the development of the Fundamental Index. Gifted with a beautiful tenor voice (he once sang with the Dixie Chicks at a financial symposium), Keane did not shy away from bursting into song at gatherings and family parties. He and his wife, Renee, were seasoned travelers, and rejoiced in the company of their combined families of six children and numerous grandchildren both in Connecticut and at their home in Sarasota, Florida. In December 2021, the George F. Keane Scholarship Fund was established by his oldest son, Brian, and supported by Keane family and friends to give deserving students in need the opportunity of receiving a Jesuit education like George received. Several University donors are making gifts through the 2022 Fairfield Awards Dinner to match these funds.

“While he was a benefactor of Fairfield, he always understood that raising funds wasn’t just for things like new buildings. He knew that a need was always going to be financial aid, and we emphasized that in all our fundraising efforts.” -

Celebrating the life of George F. Keane ’51

George Keane’51 and son, Brian

Brian Keane is pleased to establish the George F. Keane Scholarship Fund at Fairfield University in honor of his father, George F. Keane ’51. He has chosen to express his deep appreciation of his father’s influence on his life and others with the establishment of this Fund, which will benefit students in need for years to come. Brian also expresses his gratitude for the generous contributions which helped make the fund possible, and to Fairfield University for assisting in making this happen. George was greatly influenced by his Jesuit education, incorporating that influence of service to others in his life’s work. He made many significant contributions to the higher education and non-profit sectors, including revolutionizing investment opportunities for philanthropic institutions in the United States through the founding of the Common Fund. A video commemorating George Keane’s life, achievements and contributions was lovingly made by his son Brian, a Grammy-winning record producer and multi-award winning music composer. To view the video, please visit fairfield.edu/awardsdinner.
