Dear Stags, During the past year, we have all been inspired by the aspirational vision for Fairfield University as the modern, Jesuit Catholic University articulated by our President, Mark R. Nemec, PhD. I am proud to report that our student-athletes and staff have embraced that challenge in all of our endeavors; academically, athletically and as contributing members of our local and global communities. We have begun the journey to achieve that goal. I am also humbled by the extraordinary manner in which our passionate and loyal Stags have also answered that call to action with their generous support, resulting in a record-setting year of fundraising. As we prepare to move forward strategically for 2018-19 and beyond, it is critical that we reflect upon the successes, challenges and poignant moments from this past year that have been instrumental in our growth, departmentally and institutionally. A snapshot of the numbers is clear evidence of an exceptional 2017-18 campaign; namely a 3.30 student-athlete GPA, five MAAC Championships, and more than 5,000 hours of community service. Inextricably linked to these tangible accomplishments and statistics are the special moments in time that I have been fortunate enough to experience in my daily interaction with our student-athletes, staff and my colleagues at Fairfield University. The 2017-18 Annual Report is a testament to these moments, created by our exceptional student-athletes and cultivated by a collection of hardworking and dedicated coaches, faculty and staff. I am confident that our student-athletes will continue to make us proud and that our community will remain unwavering in their commitment to helping these outstanding young men and women achieve their goals in all aspects of their educational experience here at Fairfield. It has been an incredible first year in Stag Country for me and my family. We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and kindness that permeates the Fairfield community. This is an exciting and eventful time in our lives and we look forward to reciprocating that spirit as proud Stags for years to come. Go Stags!

His .555 win percentage, 503 faceoff wins and 220 ground balls all rank second on the career charts. The Fairfield Alumni Association Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year was awarded to Megan Theiller ’18. ATHLETES O SKYLER DAY
After commanding George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall and terrorizing the home hardwood of fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents for three seasons, Skyler Day ’18 has cemented her place as one of the top performers in the storied history of Fairfield Volleyball. The 2018 Fairfield Female Athlete of the Year won her second consecutive MAAC Player of the Year Award in her final season with the Stags, leading the squad to another undefeated season in conference play and a third straight MAAC Championship. Since transferring to Fairfield from Buffalo after her freshman campaign, Day was the most scintillating player in the conference. She was named to the All-MAAC First Team in each of her three seasons, with her back-to-back MAAC Player of the Year Awards making her the first repeat recipient of the honor in program history. In her senior season, Day picked up where she left off junior year. The outside hitter averaged 3.77 kills per set and 2.74 digs per frame. She racked up a career-high 30 kills in a win over Niagara in early October and went over the 20-kill mark five times during the season. Day also reached the double-digit mark in digs on 13 occasions in the 2017 campaign. After a second consecutive 18-0 run through the MAAC regular season, Day was at her best in MAAC Championship action as she averaged 4.50 kills per set and 3.50 digs per set en route to tournament MVP honors. A sweep of Iona capped the Stags’ third straight conference crown and sent Fairfield back to the NCAA postseason, where they drew #2 Texas for the second time in the last three seasons. Although the Stags were ultimately overpowered by the host Longhorns, Day held her own amongst some of the best players in the country. Looking across the net at six AVCA All-Americans, Day established her place among those elite talents with eight kills and six digs in the threeset effort. With her career now at its conclusion, Stags fans can take in the incredible contributions that Day made on the program in just three years on campus, finishing her run ranked fifth all-time with 1,305 kills. 16
F THE YEAR TYLER NELSON
Fairfield Basketball just isn’t going to be the same without seeing #3 controlling the perimeter and breaking the hearts of the opponent’s defense on a nightly basis. Tyler Nelson ’18, the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year, graduated from Fairfield as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,172 total points during his four years in Stag Country. His storied senior season also saw Nelson top Fairfield’s single-season charts as he racked up 732 points for a MAAC-leading average of 22.2 points per game. He also set the records for three-pointers made in a single-season (104) and a career (315). Despite defenses keying in on him nightly, Nelson continued to be the driving force behind Fairfield’s success in 2017-18, eclipsing the 20-point mark 14 times and scoring over 30 points on five occasions. As he had been throughout his entire career for Fairfield, Nelson was at his best when March rolled around. Thought to be an underdog in the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, Nelson put the Stags on his back and led them to a remarkable run to Monday night and the MAAC Championship Game. Although the season came to a close in Albany that weekend, basketball certainly did not stop for Nelson. He played in the NABC All-Star Game in San Antonio and also participated in the 3v3 Tournament held at Final Four weekend. Nelson’s final stamp of his collegiate career came at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament where Nelson scored the game-winner in the tournament’s Championship Game as a part of his team-high 19 points. Nelson’s success led to an invitation to begin his professional career on the largest stage as he suited up for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA Summer League and was subsequently drafted third overall by the Greensboro Swarm of the NBA G League.
Q&A
with PAUL SCHLICKMANN
What are your thoughts after year one as a Fairfield Stag? I think sometimes our inherent tendency in Athletics is to focus on results and numbers. We had a great year by the numbers across the board; academically, competitively and in our community and in our fundraising efforts. I am extremely proud of all that our student-athletes, coaches and staff have accomplished. In large part, the numbers speak very well for themselves. So, as I conclude and reflect on my first year at Fairfield, I think more about four characteristics of this university and this community that consistently impressed me and resonated with me throughout the year. And they are people, passion, purpose and progress. There are extraordinary PEOPLE associated with this University who are smart, caring, dedicated and committed to who we are and who we aspire to be. Those people display great PASSION every day about our mission, about the sense of community and family that permeates this campus. Those people have an extraordinary sense of shared PURPOSE. Those people are committed to PROGRESS. There is a palpable, steadfast belief in our core principles and traditions combined with an endless pursuit of excellence. 18
On the personal side, my family and I are thrilled to have settled in town and feel blessed to be part part of this vibrant and welcoming community. We are excited about the journey that lies ahead.
How is Fairfield Athletics working to be national in scope? There are multiple factors that can influence this but a few that are really the key. Undoubtedly, consistent, competitive success across the board, in our conference and on a national stage will garner attention for our program and the University. How do we accomplish that? We recruit the best and brightest nationally and internationally. We provide them with the resources to achieve their personal and collective best as student-athletes. We strategically attack our scheduling efforts so that we are competing against high caliber opponents at like-minded institutions. We continue to represent Fairfield Athletics on national committees and host NCAA events to extend our voice and enhance our brand. We continue to touch current (and future) constituents with our marketing and broadcast efforts. We continue to keep our foot on the gas in a measured, strategic approach in each of these areas and ultimately, the notion is that there is a gradual cumulative impact that moves the needle in that positive direction. Critical in each of these factors and in achieving national notoriety is our ability to engender support from our donors in order to create the requisite infrastructure to succeed. So many of our stakeholders have answered the call and our recordsetting year in fundraising is evidence of that.
What changes have you seen at Fairfield in your first year as Athletic Director? Our President, Dr. Nemec has charted a course for Fairfield to be the modern, Jesuit Catholic University. In my short time here, the tangible evidence of that vision is extraordinary. It is evident throughout campus in our collective mindset and in our daily pursuit of excellence. The second you drive onto the grounds, you
are immersed in a collegiate setting that is second to none. The physical transformation and growth of our University continues at a rapid and, I dare say, enviable pace. In one year, I have witnessed the completion and opening of the Tully Dining Commons, the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies, 42 Langguth Hall, a renovated Campion Hall and a quickly evolving new Dolan School of Business. We have some exceptional recruitable assets in our arsenal here at Fairfield and there is more on the way. Athletics is fortunate and excited to be part of those future landscape changes.
What is your staff striving for in regards to the game day experience? We want our home games to be a must-see event for students and and staff, a fan-friendly, welcoming environment for families in the surrounding communities and a focal point of pride and passion for all our alumni. There is no denying that the quality of the product plays a role in that. So, as I have already mentioned, there is no substitute for competitive success to excite your fan base. However, what should not be underestimated in this equation is the relational value our coaches and staff have with our constituents. They infuse positive energy throughout our campus and into our community by virtue of their service to both, thus creating a reciprocal desire to support. Through our marketing, promotional and game day initiatives, we endeavor to showcase our programs and that energy every time one of our teams is in action. We are focused on creating affordable – and often times free – entertainment and an atmosphere that inspires our fans of all ages to want to join us as often as possible. In particular, we view our student-athletes as role models for our younger fans and are focused on connecting with local families to foster that experience. Additionally, we are launching “Fairfield Fridays” this fall, a weekly, campus wide initiative encouraging everyone in Stag Country to wear Fairfield gear in a show of school spirit and pride. With Athletics as a key stakeholder in this initiative, we feel this will foster interest in our student-athletes, programs and events and ultimately have a positive impact on attendance.
What does that mean for Athletics going forward?
It is imperative that we are aligned with the mission and vision of the University. Dr. Nemec has challenged all of us (staff and students alike) to be unbounded in our approach as we chart a course for Fairfield that embraces our long standing core values and traditions while establishing a mantra of modern excellence. For Athletics, that means a few things. First and foremost, we endeavor to provide each and every student-athlete with a championship caliber experience in every aspect of their Fairfield education. I believe that we have an opportunity here to create a holistic student-athlete development model that is second to none. As we strive for that primary objective, we must be ever mindful of maximizing Athletics as an integral component of campus culture and as a vehicle to enhance our spirit and pride amongst students, faculty, staff, alumni and the surrounding community. Ultimately, Athletics is a front porch for the University and if we are successful in achieving these objectives, then we will serve as a driver of enhancing our national scope and brand identity.
What is one thing you want everybody to know about Fairfield Athletics?
I want all of our stakeholders to know we are going to do it the right way. We will operate with integrity and purpose to build student-athletes for life while instilling a sense of pride in all our constituents. We will strive for excellence in all that we do with an unapologetic swagger and confidence. There are a lot of great growth opportunities in the near future here at Fairfield. I started to learn about it during the interview process. I began to see it unfold as soon as I arrived on campus. After being immersed in the community and the culture for a year, I believe it now more than ever. There is truly no better time to be a Stag and we have an opportunity to create something special with our Athletics program. Ultimately, our success will be a by-product of our cultural commitment to shared values, a focus on our common purpose and an unyielding desire to improve and achieve.
