CONCLUDING REMARKS Adrienne A. Johnson ’91

Investing in Scholarship at Fairfield — Creating Opportunities for our Students Living our mission, elevating talent, and promoting diversity — these are the outcomes of generosity for student scholarship. As a modern, Jesuit Catholic university, Fairfield is committed to helping those in need, and we recognize that scholarship assistance often provides a singular opportunity for a life-changing education. We understand the transformative power of education for scholarship recipients, and also see the ways in which a diverse group of students enrich campus life. Scholarships bring together a uniquely gifted population of undergraduates, attracting exceptionally talented young scholars while promoting a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student body. Furthermore, scholarships inspire our students to persist in their studies, embrace the academic experience, and look toward the future with hope. These students are deeply grateful for the support of benefactors like you who believe in them. Your generosity fosters a sense of inspired motivation in our scholarship recipients. Since 1988, the annual Fairfield Awards Dinner has raised more than $19 million for the Alumni Multicultural Scholarship Fund and other endowed scholarships to help students realize their full potential through a Fairfield education. We thank you for your partnership in building on that record of success by your participation this evening.

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: This has been an exceptional year for all of us, and so we have had to adapt our 32 nd annual Fairfield Awards program to a virtual format. But in so many ways, the work that we do together as a community to support young men and women of promise by making a Fairfield education available to them is more vital — more clearly essential to the character of the institution that we love and serve — than in any year in recent memory. This celebration is our opportunity to renew our mission of service by providing the transformative gift of a modern Jesuit, Catholic education. We do this as inheritors of the tradition of Ignatian pedagogy, which has been forming students to serve the world since 1547. While higher education is in continual evolution — and we see how this has accelerated in 2020 — the values to which we have remained faithful as a learning community for over 250 years have remained unchanged: This is our commitment to the care of the whole person — to form our students in spirit, body, and mind, and to provide institutional and financial support for those who need our help so that they may fulfill their potential and realize their vocations. As we rise as a University, and as we strive at Fairfield to become ever more global in outlook, our commitment to providing these opportunities to persons of all backgrounds becomes ever more critical. More men and women are seeking a Fairfield education than ever. This year, once again, we received the largest applicant pool in our history for the class of 2024, with over 12,500 applicants — an increase of almost 3 percent over last year. Given we are able to accomplish this at a time when the college-age population across the country but especially in the Northeast is declining is a reflection of our growing stature. It is also a challenge to all of us. We must rise to meet these young people and foster their growth so that they can join our community. We must always bear in mind that St. Ignatius embraced education as a mission for the Society of Jesus because it was revealed to him that forming young persons of promise was the most advantageous way to transform the world for the better. Thank you for joining us this evening as we honor tonight’s award recipients, all of whom are exemplary members of our community, and thank you for your commitment to the continuity of this essential mission and to Fairfield’s continued pursuit of modern excellence. Warmest regards,

Mark R. Nemec, PhD President Professor of Politics

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT SPEAKER

XAVIER COLE ’20 A recent graduate with a degree in finance and economics from Fairfield’s Charles F. Dolan School of Business, Cole plans to one day earn his MBA, but has, as of this past summer, earned a full-time role with Lazard Asset Management on the Equity Trading Desk. When Cole, a native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., first stepped foot on Fairfield’s campus, he “instantly felt the energy, the excitement, and the togetherness of the community.” As an undergraduate, Cole was a member of the Finance Club, and worked as an intern in both the marketing and finance departments at Meridian Risk Management, a private insurance firm that specializes in high net worth clients. Also, while a student at Fairfield, Cole became Bloomberg Market Concepts Certified and served as a portfolio manager with the Fairfield Investment Group on campus. He has also been a volunteer with the Church of God in New Rochelle, N.Y. since 2012 and was a recipient of Fairfield University’s Cristo Rey Nativity Scholarship. When asked about his greatest learning experience at Fairfield, Cole said that it was the process of taking ownership over his education: “I have learned that my mistakes are my most important teachers because they teach me discipline and self-control,” Cole said. “They allow me to see where I went wrong as a teenager and as an aspiring student. I take great pride in correcting my mistakes.” At Fairfield, Cole developed strong friendships with professors and peers and credits the “Fairfield spirit” for helping him to flourish in the community.“Senior year, I had the great opportunity to meet and work with business students from across the globe at the Rotman International Trading competition,” Cole continued. “I also had the chance to live on the beautiful shoreline down at the beach and despite the pandemic (and missing out on some springtime traditions) we still managed our best to make it feel worthwhile.” For all those watching the Virtual Fairfield Awards, Cole wanted to express his gratitude. “I am ever so grateful for their compassion and I vow to turn this scholarship into something that will make my future dreams and aspirations become a reality. Once again, thank you. For without you, attending Fairfield University would not have been possible.”

FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Meet the President of the Alumni Association HUGH MORGAN ’69, P’95 Hugh Morgan majored in marketing at Fairfield, but it was the University’s emphasis on social justice and being a man for others that left the deepest impression on the 1969 graduate. That’s what compelled the Massapequa, N.Y. native to join the Army after graduation and then embark on a 40-year career with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “I considered it a public service,” said the father of three, one of whom, Brendan ’95, followed his dad’s lead to the rolling hills of North Benson Road. Now retired and enjoying life as a non-commuter in nearby Rye, N.Y., Morgan has decided again to turn his attention to others — by becoming the president of Fairfield’s Alumni Association. Morgan first visited Fairfield just before graduating from Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, N.Y. at a time when he and friends were also considering Mount St. Mary College, Siena, Catholic University, and other respected East Coast schools. “The campus kind of grabbed you,” he said about choosing to attend Fairfield, which was one of the younger schools on his list. Starting out as a classics major, Morgan fondly remembers classes with longtime faculty members Richard Regan, PhD (English), Gerald Cavallo, PhD (Marketing), and the Rev. John Bonn, S.J. Morgan ended up spending all four years on campus, living with roommate Tom Quackenbush ’69, who joined him at Army Officer Candidate School before starting his own longtime career as an IBM executive. Morgan served two years in Oklahoma and Texas before settling down with his wife, Emily, who specialized in computers at AT&T before pivoting to her current passion, teaching math at School of the Holy Child in Rye. Morgan’s job as a first-level officer in Bank Supervision at the Federal Reserve meant commuting to New York City each day, so the couple decided to raise their family in nearby Westchester County, settling in Rye. While his career had him traveling to Puerto Rico regularly, he also often made time to attend Fairfield reunions or take in a basketball match-up. “I found it was a great weekend activity, to take my two older ones up to the games,” said Morgan, who now enjoys bringing his young grandchildren to campus for Mass at Egan Chapel followed by a game. Not long before retiring, Morgan noticed the Fairfield Alumni Association was looking for board members and he signed up for a three-year stint. Soon, he was re-upping for three more years. As president, Morgan leads the board in advancing volunteerism, contributions, and attendance at alumni and University events — something that comes naturally to him. In early July, he presided over his first meeting, albeit via Zoom. He said he’s happy to report alumni chapters near and far are quite active, and he’d love to welcome additional members to the board, to increase both its size and its diversity.

Clinton A. Lewis Jr. ’88

or Clint Lewis ’88, hard work and serendipity have worked hand in hand to shape a life marked with successes. The son of Caribbean parents and the first in his family to attend college in the United States, Lewis found his way to Fairfield University after his high school guidance counselor presented him with five Catholic universities to consider. When he applied to Fairfield, his guidance counselor offered a cautionary word.

“She told me to not get my hopes up on getting into Fairfield, because the salutatorian of my high school had already been waitlisted,” Lewis recalled. Lewis was accepted and immediately declared a major in biology. “I assumed I had to declare a major right away,” he said. “I always did well in science and math but science came easier to me than math.” Without a calling for research or medicine, Lewis set his sights on combining science and business, which he says shaped his Fairfield experience and his professional pursuits thereafter. A chance encounter at Fairfield set in motion his future career. Noticing a career fair in the campus center one afternoon as he made his way to the Bannow Science Center for class, Lewis stopped and struck up a conversation with Charles Dombeck ’71 of Pfizer. The duo talked at length, causing Lewis to miss his class and forge a relationship with Dombeck, who became Pfizer’s Vice President of Corporate Human Resources. Dombeck later played an instrumental role in hiring Lewis at Pfizer upon graduation — where Lewis would work for the next 25 years. Starting in sales, Lewis progressed through senior commercial roles in human health, moving to the animal health division of Pfizer in 2007 when he became the President of U.S. Operations. In 2013, Pfizer spun out the animal health division into Zoetis, the largest global animal health company, with Lewis becoming their Executive Vice President of U.S. Operations and a corporate officer. Two years later, he became their Executive Vice President of International Operations and by 2018, Zoetis’ EVP and Group President of International, Commercial Development for Global Genetics and Aquatics Health. For Lewis, each step in his career has been as rich and meaningful as the next, learning how to leverage his “passion and creativity around science with an ever-increasing understanding of how to run successful businesses and to do so by positively engaging people and large teams.” With each new opportunity, Lewis said his Fairfield experience and its core curriculum proved to be the perfect foundation. “Fairfield really helped to shape my path — and not only from an academic standpoint,” he said. “It forced me to think about things beyond my major and it stretched me to think and discern across a number of different disciplines.” When Lewis thinks back on his trajectory from Fairfield to Pfizer and to Zoetis, he attributes much of his success to two factors: family and Fairfield. “For me, I look at the type of person and the type of leader I am today, and other than the DNA I have from the benefit of my mom and dad, it’s a product of the experience I had at Fairfield,” said Lewis. “Fairfield and my Jesuit learning experience instilled in me a sense of self, an appreciation for others, and helped me to discover where I could make a difference.”

ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD

H. Bart Franey ’67 he lessons learned on the playing field are lessons that remain after the game ends. For Bart Franey ’67, the takeaways he learned on the rugby pitch as a student at Fairfield have woven into every aspect of his life. Coming from a Jesuit high school in Kansas City, Missouri, Franey was immediately drawn to the newly-formed Fairfield University Rugby Football Club (FURFC) when he came to Fairfield in 1963. “Growing up in the Midwest in the ‘60s, it was all football, basketball, and baseball,” said Franey. “I’d go to rugby practices just to watch my freshman friends from Loyola Hall play. It was so new to me.” Franey decided to join the team in spring 1964 and was mentored by teammates Dan Gatti ’66, Doug Ciacci ’65, and Al Sullivan ’65. By his junior year, he served as Match Secretary. He also was named general chairman of freshmen orientation in the fall of 1965 for the incoming first-year class, where he cultivated lifelong friendships with Red Ruggers Bill Connolly ’69 and Tom Crowley ’69. By Franey’s senior season in 1967, he was named Club President. After graduating with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Business and working briefly in industrial foods, Franey decided to pursue a career that allowed him to serve others. He entered the medical products field in which he worked for the next 50 years, rising to senior management positions with American Hospital Supply, McKesson, and Herman Miller. He retired as the co-founder and CEO of Wellness Environments, Inc., a manufacturer of modular clinical spaces for healthcare facilities. “This industry makes a difference in people’s lives who need help,” said Franey. “I love that part of it: developing products and services to help people deal with their health and wellness needs. There’s a strong element of service that energizes me and brings great people to the cause.” But that’s not the only way Franey has dedicated his life to service. Finding his way back to Fairfield Rugby after serving as the Director of Communications and Logistics for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the FURFC in 2013, he has remained the Friends of Fairfield Rugby president ever since. Franey has raised the profile of the FURFC and spread the joy and life lessons of rugby to budding athletes beyond the University community. In 2016, he helped raise money to launch COBRA, the City of Bridgeport Rugby Alliance, founded by FOFR Board Member Bob Ehlers ’79. With adult mentors, part-time coaches, and members of the University and town rugby clubs, COBRA teaches rugby to over 600 kids in 15 Bridgeport schools as an after-school program. For the FURFC, Franey has secured sponsors for team uniforms, expanded the number of scholarships for male and female rugby athletes, and acquired additional coaching staff. With a new turf pitch, scoreboard, and seating at Grauert Field on the way in partnership with the University, Franey has demonstrated his commitment to growing Fairfield University Rugby and instilling his passion and life lessons from rugby to future generations. “It taught me that no matter the circumstances, to never give up,” said Franey. “Beyond that, I learned from rugby that you probably can’t do as much as you think you can by yourself, but you can accomplish a lot more than you can believe if you team up with good people. And one other very important lesson: a Rugger is never alone — you’ll have new friends and old friends wherever life takes you.”

“ I learned from rugby that you probably can’t do as much as you think you can by yourself, but you can accomplish a lot more than you can believe if you team up with good people.”

“In a Jesuit school we try to model — imperfectly but the best that we can — what a human community should be like, in the hope that beyond Fairfield, our students will carry that message into the rest of their lives.”

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY/ADMINISTRATOR AWARD

Paul F. Lakeland, PhD

F

or Dr. Paul Lakeland, the Jesuit tradition has shaped the journey of his professional and intellectual life. Now the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Professor of Catholic Studies and founder of the University’s Center for Catholic Studies, Dr. Lakeland’s affiliation with the Jesuits began long before his teaching career at Fairfield University — in fact, it started while he was a student in England, where he attended a Jesuit secondary school from the age of 11. He later joined the Society of Jesus, earning a Licentiate in Philosophy from Heythrop Pontifical Athenaeum, a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from Oxford University, and a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the University of London. Dr. Lakeland continued his academic career at Vanderbilt University, earning a doctorate on the later religious and political thought of G.W.F. Hegel, later leaving the Jesuits and returning back to England upon completion of his degree. While teaching in London, Lakeland received a call about a job at Fairfield University, thanks to a submission by his dissertation director. Nearly 39 years later, Fairfield remains his professional home. “From the moment I stopped being a Jesuit, I found this job at Fairfield, so my relationship with the Jesuit tradition has been uninterrupted,” he said. “It has set me off on a journey that I am still on, one that hasn’t ended and from which I haven’t taken many digressions.” On that journey, Dr. Lakeland has amassed a number of distinctions for his work, including three book awards from the Catholic Press Association, as well as the 2018 award for best theology book of the year from the College Theology Society. He is also a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Theological Society, the College Theology Society, and the Catholic Theological Society of America, of which he was president in 2018-19. He has been scholar in residence at New York University and has held the Richardson Fellowship at Durham University in the United Kingdom. Among his awards at Fairfield, he was named the 1990 AHANA minority students’ association awardee as teacher of the year, and received the Alpha Sigma Nu award for Fairfield’s teacher of the year in 2005. In reflecting on his tenure at Fairfield and his ties to the Jesuit vision of Catholicism, Dr. Lakeland says the Jesuit call to be “other-centered” has colored his life in countless ways. “As a scholar, I have taught in my writing and public speaking that the church exists not for its own sake, but for the sake of the world that it tries to serve. As a classroom teacher, it has made me try to reach students as persons, not just as seats in a classroom. And it has energized me to encourage them to recognize that with privilege comes responsibility. In a Jesuit school we try to model — imperfectly but the best that we can — what a human community should be like, in the hope that beyond Fairfield, our students will carry that message into the rest of their lives.”

PARENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

Claire and Woody Knopf, P’16

R

esidents of Rumson, New Jersey, the Knopfs have dedicated their lives to serving their community, a sentiment that they then brought to Fairfield University when their son James ’16 began his undergraduate career at Fairfield. Claire Knopf currently serves as chair of the Monmouth Medical Center Foundation Board and co-chair of the Women’s Council for the Leon Hess Cancer Center Council at Monmouth Medical Center, and is a past community vice president of the Junior League of Monmouth County in New Jersey and an immediate past president of the Monmouth County Historical Association. She has been a member of Fairfield University’s Board of Trustees since 2016, serving on the Infrastructure and Student Life committees. Woody Knopf is the former chairman of Knopf Automotive LLC, a global supplier of aftermarket parts. He is currently chairman of Knopf Real Estate LLC, a national developer of commercial real estate. Woody has served on the executive board of the Motor Equipment Rebuilders Association (MERA), and in 2018, he was awarded the prestigious Michael J. Cardone, III Award for Leadership and Vision in the automotive industry. Since 2007, Woody has served on the operating board of the Monmouth Medical Center. In 2018, he was asked to serve on New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s Transportation Transition Team and in June of 2019 was appointed Commissioner of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. When James was an undergraduate, Claire and Woody served as the inaugural chairs of Fairfield University’s Parents Leadership Council in 2015 through 2016. In launching the council, Claire said her hope was to create the same sense of community she and Woody have instilled in all of their service endeavors. “We wanted to create a community and a sense of belonging for parents, and really give them a vehicle to communicate, connect, and inform them of their opportunities to get involved at Fairfield.” Through the Parents Leadership Council, they have served as hosts for student send-off and parent engagement events and have volunteered their time to help unite parents. With each event, Claire and Woody have helped convene a network of parents to celebrate all that Fairfield is and offers to its students. “Students step off the podium and they start running at Fairfield,” said Woody. “They learn how to think, feel good about themselves and others, and they learn how to make things happen.” In addition to James, Claire and Woody have two other grown children, Catherine and Elizabeth.

“ We wanted to create a community and a sense of belonging for parents, and really give them a vehicle to communicate, connect, and inform them of their opportunities to get involved at Fairfield.
