A JOUR NEY OF DEFINING MOMENTS
FA I R F I E L D U N I V E R S I T Y
WE’VE GOT IT FROM HERE This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. Your child’s hard work has paid off, and a world of possibilities has opened up. It’s the beginning of a brand-new journey of exploration. And at Fairfield University—with our rigorous academics, passionate, supportive faculty and our active, engaged student body—it’s the kind of journey that leads to a lifetime of success. Your child has been invited to join the Fairfield community because they’re driven, conscientious and enthusiastic about expanding their perspectives. They’re ready to collaborate, to find themselves, to become the successful leaders and creators of tomorrow and to make the world a better place, one moment at a time. And like you, we’re devoted to the journey that gets them there.
BELONG HERE, GO ANYWHERE From the very beginning, all first-year students at Fairfield receive a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the campus community. At Orientation in June, both resident and commuter students are placed in teams that become their First Year Experience (FYE) groups in the fall. FYE groups meet weekly with a student leader and a staff member to cover topics every college student needs to know— like mastering time management, living healthy, developing leadership qualities, standing for social justice and setting career goals. These FYE groups also grab shuttles into town, catch trains into New York City and many will stick together long after college. Living among fellow first-year students in “The Quad,” your child will feel a sense of belonging right away. We also offer the opportunity to join one of our Living and Learning Communities (LLCs): Healthy Living; Leadership Through Service; Man 2 Man; or Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (WiSTEM). These LLCs are designed to build strong bonds and inspire deeper involvement. This thoughtful attention to first-year students and their needs sets them up for success during the next four years.

DOING MORE TO MOVE We keep classes small at Fairfield because we want our professors to know their students—not just their names, but what their strengths are and who they are as people. Small class sizes are a big part of why every class, no matter the subject, is a vibrant and engaging intellectual experience. We offer more than 50 majors and minors to choose from, all built around our Fairfield Core—a customizable set of classes that enhances the depth and breadth of our liberal arts approach to education. Because we believe that in order to better the world, you must first understand it from all angles. Our students learn on a deeper level, whether they’re exploring new ideas in the classroom, unlocking new solutions in the lab or studying in small groups in the library. And they have the opportunity to work with the latest technology and state-of-the-art facilities to push knowledge forward and gain the skills they need to be ready for anything. Staff members from the Office of Academic Support and Retention, along with students’ professors and advisors, work with students individually so they fully understand all the resources that can enhance and support them on their journey. From guiding students through class selection to providing tutors, we help students exceed their goals.
FULLY IMMERSED IN We know that a big part of your child’s success is directly related to how involved they are. Students can choose from 80+ clubs and organizations to stay active and engaged. They might head to the RecPlex to work out, join an intramural team or catch a Stags basketball or lacrosse game. They could publish their first article in the student newspaper, The Mirror, help plan events with the Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA) or start working at the student-run radio station. And they won’t have to leave campus to enjoy a variety of art exhibits, performances and late-night events.
LIVING DEEPLY, LEARNING COMPLETELY Fairfield is committed to supporting the whole person at every turn, so each student can find intellectual, social and personal success. Our students build strong leadership skills and work together as part of a supportive community. And we make sure that students of all backgrounds benefit from the spiritual and service aspects of our Jesuit heritage. Campus Ministry and service learning trips provide all students with the chance to address social justice issues by helping in the local community and abroad. True leadership comes from making a positive impact on those around you, from making ethical decisions and from constant personal development. It’s why we offer the Redefining Leadership program to first-year students—to help them build strong communication skills and to start them on a path toward effective leadership in all areas of life.
SUCCESS BEYOND FAIRFIELD All first-year students are encouraged to start setting career goals. At the Career Planning Center, our counselors provide students with the resources and guidance to best utilize their time here and to become as successful as possible. From résumé assistance and interview skills to advice about which clubs to join, we help your child at every stage of career development. Students can also connect with a national network of alumni for professional support well before graduation. While many students love our proximity to New York City—and the entertainment the city provides—they also value the city for its other important benefits: job interviews, internships and incredible careers.
