FAIRE SCHOLARSHIPS

In Ecuador, Faire Collection has been implementing a scholarship program for many years. This program is available to Faire Collection artisans, their families and select members of the extended community. These scholarships include academic scholarships to high school, university, and vocational fair trade training programs.

EXPLAINING OUR IMPACT After agriculture, the artisan sector is the primary source of income in the developing world. However, local artisans find themselves trapped in their local micro economies unable to earn enough to support themselves and their families. Â Faire Collection addresses these problems by providing access to the global market. In particular we provide knowledge of style trends so artisans can produce competitive designs, as well as quality assurance - we teach our artisans to have an eye on the details we know our customers expect and value.

A DAY IN THE FAIRE WORKSHOP A group of skilled artisans expertly create each piece of jewelry with an amazing attention to detail. The workshop is full of laughter and friendly chatter as the women share recipes, tips for childrearing, and many inside jokes. The workshop is a place of community born from a shared bond built on hope for the future. In Ecuador, 61% of the population is informally employed, exposing them to labor abuse, lack of health care, and exploitative working conditions. In sharp contrast to the majority of artisan production which only oﬀers informal employment paid by piece rate, Faire Collection artisans are formally employed with a guaranteed base salary, paid vacation, paid maternity leave, full health insurance and retirement benefits. Additionally, as the majority of our employees are women, we know the careful balance that working mothers must achieve, so we allow our artisans to set their own working hours.
