“Frolic Buoyancy� Imagine different possible scenarios for futures; invoke an era in which humanity ceases to negatively impact to our planet resources. It shows how it is possible to become airborne in collective sustainable environments. The motion refers to how it feels to float in the air. It is condensing the gap between our perception and experience of the the third layer that between the space and earth at the bottom of which we dwell. 7

THE SURFURBIA STUDIO

Reyner Banham in his book The Architecture of Four Ecologies identifies LA’s coastal edge as one of four fundamental urban geographies that form LA’s built and natural fabric. This studio will explore the urban and environmental infrastructure of the Los Angeles’s coast from Long Beach to Malibu. Los Angeles shares the privilege of being a major metropolis -by-the-sea with many other large cities in the World: New York, San Francisco, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Rio de Janeiro, Lagos and many, many other cities of over one-million inhabitants.
Yet a comparison between L.A. and many of these cities finds a fragmented yet extensive edge condition or rather condition(s) that are defined by the city’s infrastructure more than by its landscape. Banham describes this city of coastal territories (actual cities within a city) as being “book-ended” at its north and south extremes by a landmark residence, namely a house by Craig Ellwood in the North and a house by Rudolph Schindler in the South.
But in-between one finds a myriad of changing, shifting territories that blur and even hide Los Angeles’ arrival to its ultimate edge. Between the beach-front homes that line that edge in Malibu and it’s counterparts in Newport Beach, a pulsating border of concrete-lined rivers, viaducts, power plants, airports, sewage plants piers with amusement parks, museums and harbors (large and small) intermingle and alternate without pause with tourist areas, bike paths and various densities of residential fabric. The Surfurbia studio aims to explore, document and give a sensorial and conceptual reading of these various instances of fractured arrive-to-the-sea that is an under-visited aspect of this city.

A sketch study the history of Santa Monica and how can propose a new concept in the site; bringing telefreak back will encourage more people to visit the beach and it would provide an easier teleportation for spectators.

With every study, through the looking glass, came the unveiling of man’s interventions and its affects they had on the costal sites. This propsal of Santa Monica extends the parks from the cliff to the shore point which divide land in two levels. 13
A sketch study the history of Long Beach; since its the industrial landmark for Los Angeles, therefore the beach environment is purely industrial. The study interprets the industrial environment in away where it takes over the city creating industrial pollution.

The future California of is transforming to two different categories. Meaning Ocean areas should have two levels that let people more close to the sky than to be in the ground area. 15
A sketch study the history of South of San Pedro, Nike missiles bunkers and LOYD Chapple. In 1945 South of San Pedro, Nike missiles bunkers and LOYD Chapple were built. The sketch illustrate how its still can feel the war environment in Nike Missiles and vice versa for the Chapple were it feels more peaceful next to it. 16

COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN

Studio 4A is the Comprehensive Design Studio, in which students will develop a complex architectural project to a design development level that culminates in a highly detailed documentation of their design. Each project is expected to incorporate the essential aspects of design – site, circulation, structural and environmental systems—with more detailed and integrated design decisions in terms of building envelope, building material and building service systems. The framework of the studio is rigorous in its effort to guide the student to this advanced level of development and the pace of the studio rapidly progresses from conceptualization to design development. Students’ projects are expected to incorporate a technical level of detail and understanding, from local codes and regulations, including ADA and life safety, to conventions of architectural documentation, including detailed drawings and specifications. The studio will make use of multiple methodologies of design in the visualization and development of the projects, incorporating projective and axonometric drawings, physical and digital modeling, and graphic representations.
Studio 4A is developed in tandem with the ARCH 464 Systems Integration course and together they integrate the tools and knowledge necessary to develop a Comprehensive Design project. Through a series of lectures and in-studio critiques the studio and seminar will introduce the students to a spectrum of design and engineering professionals, giving students the opportunity to have direct feedback on their design projects.

This studio will also place great emphasis on design communication. The language and tools of the design process are directly linked to the ideas and outcomes of any exercise in architecture. You can only design only as well as you can represent a design. A vast array of media will be explored; including digital and analog media in its various forms. This studio will discourage the use of 3D Digital Molding as an exclusive design media: Students will be expected to build analog models and produce hand-made media alongside digital imaging and 3D modeling finding a critical and focused application for each media as it relates to the content of the work and the stage of development in the design process.
Structure, technology, building systems and codes are explored as design determinants, space makers, and form givers in this synthesis studio. Building typologies, long span structural systems, environmental systems and electronic media are analyzed as they relate to design development. The studio has a portfolio development component that includes lectures and assignments.

Through critical analysis and comparison of the historical, contemporary, and multi-cultural evolution of house and housing, the studio addresses the form and meaning of the dwelling with a discussion that juxtaposes interior vs. exterior space, public vs. private space, community vs. the individual, and traditional vs. non-traditional families. The studio focus is divided between the single-family dwelling and multiple-unit housing typologies. The course includes a sustainable materials and systems component that includes lectures and written research assignments.

The design concept was achieved by utilizing three simple Tectonic buildings and creating complexity through circulation system surrounds the buildings. The main idea is to design a space that promotes healthy lifestyle through an increase amount of movement through a residential area. The space is divided into three main areas, commercial, semi commercial and residential.
