NEXT WORKPLACE DESIGN DEA 3301 Design UX Studio Workplace Interior | October – December 2015 Most people hear the word “bump!” and imagine awkward encounters where belongings go flying and apologies are exchanged. But this mindset can change! The unintentional informing of ideas that occurs when someone with ideas encounters another person with ideas builds new things that couldn’t have been accomplished alone. This design concept of “bump” manifests itself in the design through zones that vary in visual and acoustic privacy and access: individual space to develop our personal ideas and individuality, intentional bumping where individuals can combine ideas to create new ones, and unintentional bumping, where accidents can create even crazier ideas!
The Turnstone’s NEXT Design Competition 2015 prompt asked competition participants to design a co-working space within an existing facility that includes a reception area, an ideation space, an active learning classroom, a work cafe, project rooms, private enclaves, and an open office.

Work Cafe Researching millenials in the workplace and co-working spaces provided an understanding of the users and necessary functions of the space:
freedom of choice. The multi-tasking generation is used to so much going on at once, which translates into they way they work: they need the freedom to get up and stretch, take a walk, or just switch positions and talk to a neighbor. public

individuals who collaborate, support each others work, and can give constructive feedback and praise.

OLIN OPEN OFFICE PARTITION
DEA 3301 Design UX Studio Furniture Design | December 2015 Through observation and interviews, we found users’ lack of control of levels of privacy in personal work stations interfere with user comfort, efficiency, and productivity. The existing wall partitions did not adequately deal with auditory and visual distractions.

Making a 180 turn involves choice and change, two important aspects of staying engaged in the work place. Being able to rotate the partition panels provides each user control over the degree of privacy he or she prefers, and they can be easily turned around at any time. The choice of visual and acoustic privacy and creative expression gives users ownership over their own space and their own work, while still bringing playfulness into the office.

SYSEN 5740 Design Thinking in Complex Systems UX Design | January 2016 – March 2016 My six-member team of engineers, urban planners & designers combined a design-thinking and a systems engineering problem-solving approach through observation, immersion, and interviews in a community of users. We focused on a 60-100 age demographic, and came up with was an mobile
application and a physical booklet of routes. The goals of these solutions were to provide easy access to transportation information, find each user’s ideal way to get from A to B, promote sustainable modes of travel, and provide a way to explore & share destinations.

easy-to-read route number
During our interviews, we found that the vast majority of older residents do not use or rely on smartphones. This creates an information gap where applications with all of the information would not be any help to people without a way of viewing the app. In addition to that, the current book of routes and schedules is large and unwieldly.
route info and map on back
This led us to our pocket guide solution. This book can be personally curated for each rider with whatever routes and schedules he or she may use regularly. It also takes into account different modes of transportion besides the bus that they may take. The book is roughly the size of a smartphone.

CONSONANT WORD BOX DEA 1102 Interior Design Studio II Designer | February 2014 What is in a word? This “word box” project explores the tangibility of a word and the possibilities of expressing language through objects and images. Designed to embody the word consonant, an adjective that is defined as “in agreement, corresponding in sound, or harmonious”, this box is expressed through two separate pieces because the empty space of one piece becomes the physical body of the other, and vice versa, imitating the way that vowels and consonants complement each other. Both of the components are constructed with the same amount of materials that one box would require, so when they come together, they create harmony. The space is an environment designed for a person to experience the verb nurture. It is an exhibit that showcases the box.
the walls are the rich color and texture of wood, which is a warm and comforting material to touch.
the slope down into the exhibit forces the user to touch and rely on the walls, as a child relies on a parent.

GUNLOCKE SHOWROOM DEA 2203 StudioSHIFT Exhibit Design | March – April 2015 There is a critical point where opposites attract: old and new, real and fake, temporary and permanent. Gunlocke’s new collection enters a new era of mobile, tech embedded, collaboration furniture. These dualities of Gunlocke’s traditional brand and their new angle are represented through contrasts of material, pattern, visual intracacies, and movement in this design of NeoCon 2015 Gunlocke Showroom, Temporeality.
The showroom is meant to not only sell the furniture, but to sell the experience and brand of Gunlocke - to make it memorable. By creating a showroom design that is completely unlike anything that Gunlocke has had before, there is a shock factor for anyone familiar with the brand. The logo and color remind customers of the “old” Gunlocke and the reliability of the products.

As is traditional with NeoCon showrooms, free gifts make a statement about the company, and gives the customer something to take with them. Made out of recycled veneers and printed with Gunlocke’s logo, the meeting of natural wood and technology enhance the showroom’s play on contrast in this flashdrive card. The movement of pull, swivel, and push all echo the display methods in the showroom, and the rounded rectangular form reiterates the design motif that punctuates the space.
