Acts of Faith
AUG 2019
We are a family of faith, sharing God’s love in a spirit of hope.
Fall Kickoff Party Join us in the backyard for fun, food, and fellowship on Wednesday, August 28, at 5:15 p.m. as we kick off another exciting fall at Faith! We’ll have activities for the whole family—inflatables, yard games, trivia, and, as always, the playground! On the menu are burgers and hot dogs, plus gelato from the Spotz Gelato food truck! Bring your favorite side dish to share. This is a great time to introduce new people to our family of Faith so invite your friends and neighbors!
Blessing of the Backpacks During worship on Sunday, August 25, we will have our annual blessing of the backpacks and pray for our students and teachers as they begin a new year. Children, be sure to bring your backpacks with you to church that day!
J.O.Y. News
Monday, August 19, is pizza and painting! Instead of our usual potluck, we will enjoy pizza in the RA followed by rock painting for our rock prayer garden. On Tuesday, August 20, we are heading to the state fair in Louisville, where you can get fried food on a stick, plus see animals and crafts! It’s senior day so admission is free! We will leave at 9 a.m. from the church. Let our words be seeds of encouragement --Dale
Youth Our Adventures with Dale have come to a close, but we have had a great time meeting our senior members and hearing their life stories and stories of faith! We are so thankful to Dale for taking us along and for Rose Lewis for bringing us beautiful flowers from her garden to share with the senior adults! On Sunday, August 18, at 5 p.m. we will have a Back-to-School Party. Join us for a celebration of the summer and a time to prepare for the new year! Then on Monday, August 19, we’ll join the senior adults for their monthly lunch! Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy some pizza and create beautiful stones for our new prayer garden.
Words from our Pastor What a great month July has been. In my first month on the job, I have been blown away with the incredible things happening at Faith! A few weeks ago, we hosted a week-long reading camp for ten Southern Elementary students. Each day students studied a different country through reading, crafts, and field trips. Both students and volunteers had an incredible time of learning and fun as students built impactful relationships with congregation members. The work of these volunteers throughout the school year and summer has a tangible impact on the trajectory of these students’ and their families’ lives. I loved getting to watch the world change during this week. Another awesome thing I have witnessed is what Sharon calls “Adventures with Dale.” Each Wednesday this month a group of teenagers, often more than ten, have willingly spent time building community with members of J.O.Y. (just older youth). These students inherently see the value of intergenerational relationships and love getting to know older adults better. The spirit and enthusiasm of these teenagers have reminded me of how blessed we are to be in a wonderful multigenerational family of faith. I love that we love each other. There are so many other incredible things, but the last thing I will mention here is the J.O.Y. prayer garden. Led by the Blackburns, J.O.Y. has set out to transform the exterior space between the sanctuary and the RA into a prayer garden. They hope to provide a place of solace and rest for everyone in the church. This will be a great space away from the busyness of the world to seek communion with God. I am struck by J.O.Y.’s desire to seek the spirit of God not just for themselves, but for the entire community. They are diligently working to enrich the spiritual lives of the entire community, and for that I am grateful. I look forward to the completion of the project and cannot wait to have weekly prayer time in the space. These are just a few examples of the awesome ways I have witnessed us seeking to be a family of faith sharing God’s love in a spirit of hope. The staff is continuing to work on great opportunities for spiritual and communal development through Wednesday night activities and churchwide events. I am renewed in my spirit by your wonderful witness and look forward to continuing to grow with you throughout the fall.

Business Meeting, Potluck Lunch, & Pastor Welcome Shower The church voted in April to hold business meetings on a quarterly basis instead of monthly. Each quarterly meeting will be accompanied by a potluck lunch. Our first one is this month on Sunday, August 18! It will be extra special because we will also give our new pastor family a good Faith Baptist welcome that day! We want to shower William and Cecelia with cleaning supplies, paper products, and all kinds of goodies and staples for their pantry. (For those of you familiar with the term, it’s a pounding party!) So bring a side dish or dessert to share for the meal and a gift for the pastor, and enjoy some good fellowship!

Our faith calls us to a life of rest—a life where we honor the sabbath, give our burdens to Christ and find God in our stillness. However, our culture idolizes work, consumption, and immediacy. In a world that constantly seeks more, let’s discover the value of less. In August, we will be welcoming rest. Why does rest matter? Why is it so hard? What can we do to take the discipline of rest seriously? We hope to answer these questions and more as we remember the power and importance of rest.
