MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF FAITH BAPTIST CHURCH We are a family of faith, sharing God’s love in a spirit of hope.
Deacon Family Communion
Prayer Garden
This special and meaningful service is on Sunday, November 24. The deacons are hosting a chili supper at 5:15 p.m. in the RA, with communion at 6 p.m. in the FLC. This is a time for our church family to come together in thanksgiving for all God has given to us and to put together Thanksgiving Baskets (see below) for families in our community. This service is also a time for children to learn about and participate in communion. We hope you will join us!
Thanks to the hard work of the J.O.Y. group, youth, and several others, a prayer garden has been built outside next to the sanctuary. There will be a short dedication ceremony on Sunday, November 17, at 9:40 a.m., but it is open now to use any time as a place to retreat, pray, or simply find peace and quiet for a moment.
Thanksgiving Baskets We will be gathering food supplies for Thanksgiving baskets beginning Sunday, November 3. The baskets will be distributed by the Family Resource Centers at Southern Elementary and Scott County Middle Schools to families in need. You can find sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the main hallway. Please bring items in by the morning of Sunday, November 24, so we can assemble the baskets during Deacon Family Communion that evening. Join us this year in sharing Christ's love with others.
Community Thanksgiving Dinner The Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Wednesday, November 27, at Southern Elementary School. We are responsible for providing corn again! You can sign up in the foyer to bring corn and there will be online signups to volunteer to serve, clean up, deliver, etc. Look for more information in the coming weeks!
Quarterly Business Meeting & Potluck: Sunday, November 17 Make plans to attend our next quarterly business meeting and potluck immediately following worship. This is a particularly important meeting as we will be voting on the 2020 budget. Hard copies of the budget are available in the foyer and an electronic version was distributed via email. (Contact the church office to get on our email list.)

Children’s Corner Safe Sanctuary Policy The Children’s Team has been working on a Safe Sanctuary Policy that protects children and youth from abuse. The policy will require every volunteer working with youth and children to undergo a background check and volunteer training. This policy will be brought in front of the church family for a vote at the November business meeting.
Christmas Nativity The children have begun work on their annual Christmas Program, which they will present on Sunday, December 1, during worship. All children and youth are invited to participate. There will be speaking and non-speaking roles, as well as scripture reading and prayers for older youth. We hope you will join us!
Youth Our High School Fall Retreat, “Finding Rest for Our Souls,” will be November 8-10. Please give your $75 payment to Sharon or the church office. On Sundays, November 3,10, and 17, our youth will be partnering with Georgetown College students to plan and lead a worship service. Following small groups on November 3 and 10, all youth interested in planning the service are asked to meet in the youth room from 6 to 7 p.m. The service will be Sunday, November 17, at 6 p.m.
JOY News November: a time to stop and thank those people who make a difference in your life. November is the month for lots of good food, and we’re kicking it off with our senior adult lunch on Monday, November 18, at 11 a.m.
Good food continues on Friday, November 22, when we travel to the Gift Box Tea Room in Lexington for lunch (time to be determined). As Thanksgiving approaches, remember it’s not just a day, but a way we can live our lives every day. —Dale In October, over 20 JOY members visited Cane Ridge Meeting House, Kentucky's largest oneroom log church building, in Paris. Afterwards, they enjoyed lunch at Trackside Restaurant at Paris Train Depot. Fun was had by all and the restaurant got excellent reviews!

Words from William In the business meeting on November 17, we will vote on next year’s budget as proposed by the Administrative Committee. In preparing for next year, I have been inspired by the number of incredibly generous people at Faith. You give faithfully inside and outside of the church with your money, skills, time, and presence. Thank you! With all the talk of money in the air, it seems like a good time to refresh ourselves on what tithing is and why we do it. Here is the how, what, when, where, and why (not in that order) of tithing. What: Tithe comes from a word that means one tenth of something. It refers to the 10% of one’s income that they give to a religious organization. The 10% is based on several scriptures (including Gen. 14:20, Gen. 28:22, Lev. 27:30, Num. 18:21, Matt. 23:23, 1 Cor. 16:2) and thousands of years of church tradition. Why: God’s instruction to tithe is not an arbitrary rule, but rather has several practical and theological reasons. Practically, Faith Baptist needs contributions to exist. Our tithes fund the worship, staff, programming, and missions that share God’s love in a spirit of hope. Hopefully, your life and our community are enriched through Faith Baptist, so it is only natural to support it. However, institutional security is not the primary reason we give. Theologically, we tithe because we acknowledge that all of our talents and possessions are gifts from God. By giving 10% we show our gratitude to God for these gifts. It also reminds us that we worship God, not money. With our tithes, we reassert our faith and trust in God. Finally, our tithes are a tangible way to take part in the work of the kingdom of God. We sacrifice part of our income for the sake of others so that the world might look a little bit more like the kingdom of God.
Where: Several passages in the Hebrew Bible suggest that tithes go to the temple or the organized religious institution the person is a part of. For this reason, many suggest that tithes be given to the church that a person considers their faith community. Personally, I believe that tithes go to the church and alms (giving beyond 10%) go to charities and to support the poor and needy. However, many have also suggested that in a modern context tithes can be given to any religious organization or charity that is furthering the kingdom of God. Ultimately, the most important thing is that you give, not where you give. When: Many refer to tithes as first fruits because in the Hebrew Bible it was suggested that the first 10% of the harvest be brought. Today the timing is less significant. Some give every time they receive money, some do it monthly, while others even wait until the end of the year and make one lump sum contribution. Ultimately, timing doesn’t matter, but it is important that giving be an intentional act planned into one’s budget, not an afterthought based off of excess. How: At Faith, there are several ways to give your tithe. You can contribute during offering time in worship each week. You can also mail checks to the office or deliver them in person. We also have one-time or reoccurring online giving available on our website at familyoffaith.net/give. Finally, call the office for information about stock giving or direct bank withdrawals. With tithing it is easy to get lost in the details, but the most important thing is that we live a life of generosity. So many of you at Faith are wonderful examples of what it looks like to live generously and you continue to inspire me daily. Together, we can continue practicing giving as we pursue a life that reflects Christ.

Care Bear Award The staff have selected Brad Hadaway as the first-ever recipient of the Care Bear Volunteer of the Month of the Year award! Although we are sure he has faced some grizzly moments while serving as deacon chair, on the pastor search committee, teaching adult Sunday school, and leading a youth small group, Brad always has always had a pawsitive attitude. His love of God and neighbor is fur real! Brad is one of those people who just helps make life a little more bearable, and for that we are thankful. As the recipient of this award, Brad has the distinct honor of letting the award bear hibernate in his office for a month. Congratulations on such a prestigious award, Brad! You deserve it.
