MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF FAITH BAPTIST CHURCH

We are a family of faith, sharing God’s love in a spirit of hope.

Deacon Family Communion is one of the longest standing traditions Faith has. On November 20 at 5pm we will gather in the RA to once again have a time of worship and fellowship. The deacons will provide a chili supper as we remember why communion is so important. At the end of the service we will pack the Thanksgiving bags we have collected for families at Sothern Elementary and Georgetown Middle School. This is a wonderful time to meet your deacon, spread God’s love, and hopefully encounter the divine.

Thank you to everyone who filled a Christmas box for Scarlette Jasper. In the coming weeks they will be checked and delivered for Scarlette to distribute.

The Administrative Committee has recommended a budget for 2023 that will be considered at the November business meeting. Copies of the budget proposal can be found in the FaithFile or in foyer. Contact the church office if you need a copy and cannot get one. While the overall budget amount of $396,000 stays the same, there is a an accounting change that reflects an increase in giving. Instead of building usage fees going into the general budget, they will now be placed in a restricted account that Trustees can use for building maintenance. That means the entire budget will be funded by contributions. With access to this restricted fund, the budget lines the trustees use can be reduced. We also see reductions in some salary lines to reflect actual salaries. There are increases in several areas, most notably to provide 2% raises to staff. Unfortunately, $5,000 has also be allocated to cover the rising cost of utilities. There are several adjustments throughout the budget so be sure to review it before business meeting. If you have any questions about the budget contact our treasure Glenn Williams or Pastor William.

NOV
Pumpkins and cider and hayrides, oh my! We had a wonderful time at the Tudor’s Farm for our annual Fall Festival. Congratulations to Collin Baird for getting 1st place in the Pumpkin Carving contest!

The Children have been very busy this fall with Sunday morning Godly Play stories, Wednesday evening learning about Paul’s encouraging letters to churches and individuals, and their Kids On Mission monthly meeting and their BIG missions project AMEN LEMONADE! The children have really put what they are learning into real life practice. Their desire to live out their faith and help encourage one of community partners came out through their organization of a lemonade and baked goods stand. They were able to raise over $500. I have never been more proud of our children!

As we enter the month of November we are transitioning into our thanksgiving and Advent season. The children will continue to work with Ms. Kathy Fraley learning music to present during Advent and we will also be making our annual Pumpkin Bread with Ms. Becky Collins and friends to include in the Thanksgiving baskets that our church gives away to families

The children are also beginning to prepare for their presentation of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! They will be preforming an abbreviated version of the beloved play on Wednesday, December 7th at 6pm. It will be an evening you will not want to miss! I hope you will join us.

Children’s Book of the Month

Thanksgiving In the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf is a beautiful book about a family that celebrates Thanksgiving in the woods. It is a wonderful reminder of how we should give thanks for God we give thanks for all the blessings we have in our lives.

Enjoy a meal and great opportunities to learn with your family of faith on Wednesday nights. There are specific classes for children and youth and adults can choose between “Christians an d the Environment “Taking Care of Aging Parents.

On November 23 we will not have Wednesday night as it is the day before Thanksgiving. However, on the 30th we will be back as we celebrate Advent on Wednesday nights. On the 30th we will have a craft night where we will make Chrismons. Then on December 7 we will hear the Christmas story as our children put on a Christmas pageant. Finally, on December 14 we will spread Christmas cheer as we go throughout the community caroling. All of this means there is lots of great food and fellowship ahead!

The holiday season is here! Every year this season seems to get busier and busier so, as we step into this time of year, I pray that you make time to do the things you love with the people you love. Make sure you are scheduling time to rest funny that we need to schedule time to rest, but we do! We also can schedule time to be with family and friends. Find space to be with God too. Space within the church walls and on your own to listen, to communicate, and to remember the purpose of this season. Our youth need to see us practice making time and they will take our lead. Show them that slowing down and appreciating time and togetherness is important for everyone's well being.

One way the Youth are enjoying quality time together this month is at Game Night with he JOY group on November 6 from 5:30 7:00. Together we will share a meal and play our favorite board games.

Words from William

Like so many kids before him, when we handed the young Spider Man some candy his parent prompted him with, “and what do you say?” But instead of the quick thank you we were accustomed to, this child paused. He looked at us for a very long two seconds then exclaimed “smell my feet!” before galloping to the next house. Close enough kid.

As we transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving (or early Christmas if you’re a heathen), we will be hearing a lot about saying thank you. At times like this it can be easy for gratitude to become routine, a pleasantry that blends into our lives. However, we should not take gratitude for granted. Research has shown that practicing gratitude may lead to better physical and psychological health, increased happiness and satisfaction, less materialism, and more. This is a church newsletter so we must also mention that it is a central part of our faith. The Bible continually tells us to do things like be thankful, give thanks continually, and abound in thanksgiving. The trick with gratitude, as with most things that are good for us, is that we actually have to practice it. Just like we have to teach a kid over and over again to say thank you, as adults we have to get in the habit of saying thank you all the time. How can an out of practice person become a thanksgiving champion? Here are a few suggested activities to get you in the mood to give thanks always.

• Give someone outside of your home a thank you card every week this month.

• Take five minutes to ask yourself what you are grateful for at the end of each day and offer thanks to God .

• Tell at least one person why you are thankful for them every day of the month.

I hope you’ll join me in actually practicing gratitude this month. Let’s be a thanksgiving people and experience all those benefits that phycology and the Bible tell us about. Let’s truly be thankful for gratitude.

We are a church that values that which Thanksgiving represents: gratitude and food. One of the ways we show our thanks for all the blessings God has given us is by sharing a meal with hungry families. In November we will collect traditional thanksgiving meal items and during Deacon Family Communion we will assemble these items into baskets that will provide families an entire Thanksgiving meal. This year, we are providing baskets for families at Southern Elementary and Georgetown Middle School. To participate, sign up to bring a food item on the bulletin board by the office or contact the office and we can sign you up for you. Then, bring your items to church before Sunday, November 20. Finally, show up at Deacon Family Communion and help assemble baskets. What a great way to share God’s love and literally feed the hungry!

joined our Family of Faith. We have loved getting to know them and their precious kids Robin and Artie!

As Advent approaches be on the lookout to order your poinsettia starting in early November. We love that many people choose to honor or remember a loved one and help us make our worship space extra festive.

We are so excited to celebrate the season of Advent as a family of faith! This year’s Advent theme is “Prepare a Place.” Each week we will consider how during this season we can prepare a place of peace, love, joy, and hope. Be sure to use our advent devotional as a way to mediate each day and participate in all of the worship opportunities that will allow us to center ourselves in the peace, love, joy, and hope this season has to offer.

Hope for the Holidays is a worship service to honor those that have died who we miss during the holidays. It is a simple service built around a time of open reflection as we hold hope together amidst our grief. Anyone who has lost a friend or relative is welcome to come. We will gather in the RA at 4 PM for a short service followed by light refreshments. Amidst the joy and excitement of the holidays this service is a safe space that reminds us it is okay to grieve even as we rejoice.
