MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF FAITH BAPTIST CHURCH We are a family of faith, sharing God’s love in a spirit of hope.

If so, register for our Lenten prayer workshop on Saturday, March 7, in the RA! Spend your Saturday learning from and with your church family about prayer. Session leaders will share meaningful techniques and practices they use in their own prayer lives and you will have the opportunity to practice some of them. Lunch will be provided and the event is free, but registration is required. Register online using the link below.

At Praying Together, you will be able to attend up to three of the following sessions: • Contemplative Walking: Getting in Step with God — Brad Hadaway • Prayer Partners — Carol and Flash Williams • Praying With the Monks: The Practice of Contemplative Prayer — Glen Taul • Those Who Pray Find God's Way — Wallace Williams Contact the church office with questions. CHILDREN’S CORNER WEDNESDAY NIGHTS: KIDS ON MISSION We started the year off having fun in Ms. Amanda’s Neighborhood, learning and exploring Mark 12:30-31: Jesus said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” We have read and acted out many different parables that Jesus told his followers and looked at picture books that teach us about how we can be kind in our everyday lives. Small acts of kindness help us to share God’s love with others and to live the way Jesus taught us to live. We can make a habit of choosing each day or each week one thing to do for a neighbor, classmate, friend, family member, or stranger. LENT As we transition into Lent we will be learning to pray. Over the next six weeks we will talk about what prayer is, learning to embrace the mystery and wonder that is God. We will use art, music, movement, scripture and everyday items to talk to God and listen to discover what God is saying to us. Resources for Lent: • Journey to the Heart: Centering Prayer for Children by Frank Jelenek (author) and Ann Boyajian (illustrator) • Make Room: A Child's Guide to Lent and Easter by Laura Alary • Faithful Families: Creating Sacred Moments at Home by Traci Smith

The children have been learning about how Jesus is the vine and we are branches who remain in him.

DISCOVERY CLASS For all children interested in learning more about becoming a Christ follower, there will be a class after worship on Sunday, March 8, and Sunday, March 15. We will meet until 1:30 p.m. The only thing children need to bring is a lunch to eat.

BACKPACK COLLECTION The middle school Sunday School class is once again collecting items for Lighthouse Ministries in Lexington. This year they need backpacks— good, well-made, sturdy ones that will hold up for all the personal belongings the homeless can carry. Please place backpacks in the designated plastic bin in the hallway. Thank you for supporting this ministry!

COMMUNITY EVENT: CAREGIVER CONFERENCE The Grandparents as Parents Conference will take place in Lexington on Thursday, March 19. Sessions cover subjects such as guardianship, custody, and adoption; youth suicide prevention; kinship care; e-cigarettes, vaping and addiction; bullying; and how to care for an angry child. Volunteer attorneys will also be available to provide free consultations about Continued on page 4

YOUTH Our third annual Dessert Auction is on Wednesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. in the RA! We will be raising funds for our youth programs, particularly Passport Camp. We hope you’ll join us so you can bid on some delicious desserts made by our very own members! If you would like to make a dessert for us to sell, please contact Linda Arehart or Sharon Felton.

Sign up with Sharon for the CBFKY Youth Missions Weekend at Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville. It will take place on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. The cost for the weekend is $60. We will be working and worshipping alongside youth from all over the state of Kentucky as we practice being the hands and feet of Christ.

Our youth have been studying parables on Sunday mornings for the past month and will begin to focus on historical information about the Bible throughout March. “How did we get the Bible?” “Who wrote it?” and several other

questions will be the focus of our Sunday school lessons. We are still discussing the idea of calling on Wednesday nights. We are talking about the choices we make as we seek to learn more about ourselves and how we can best serve God in this world.

Sunday nights are filled with basketball, art, games, friendship, and learning how to “Shine!” Brad’s small group continues to put their faith into practice and discuss how best to live into your faith every day. Our sixth and seventh graders have been focusing on friendships in the Bible and last week we added some beautiful art to our youth room ceiling!

The Super Bowl is for football and foosball!

Words from William Happy Lent? Is that the appropriate greeting? Are we happy about spending six weeks considering our own mortality? Our own sin and failings? Sitting with all the ways we have let God down? Maybe “good luck this Lent” is a better greeting! Lent might not be happy, but it is good, in the sense that Good Friday is good. Regular self-examination and the humbling that comes with it is a significant part of our relationship with God. Lent gives us the space to remind ourselves that we are not God, and encourages us to reconcile ourselves to God. As I reflect on the ways I have betrayed God recently, I realize that my biggest act of neglect is with my time. I get caught up in doing the good work and living the good life and forget all about spending time with God—time with no activity, no agenda, no requests, no petitions, no desired outcomes. Just time. I am sure many of you have felt this with human relationships as well. We are so busy doing things for and with other people that sometimes we forget to just sit down across the table with them, look them in the eyes, and be together. Therefore, this year for Lent I am committing time to spend with God, specifically 30 minutes each morning. This will not be a time of sermon preparation, prayers for the church, good works, daily devotions, or any other part of a checklist of things every Christian is supposed to do. This will be a time that I respond to my soul’s deep desire to dwell with the divine. It might involve scripture reading, prayer, journaling, or some other practice that I have found opens me up to God. It might also simply involve becoming still and small. No matter what it looks like, it will be time and it will be for God. No agenda, just basking in God’s warm light of love. If you are not sure where to start with your own Lent observance, check out our Lent resources that provide a variety of practices that you can incorporate into your life. These resources can be found on the table right outside the sanctuary. Also, if you would like to grow in prayer this Lent, be sure to register for our prayer workshop on March 7. (Get more info on the front page.)

CAREGIVER CONFERENCE CONTINUED guardianship, custody, child support and other related legal issues. (These spots are limited and will be based on appointments.) The speaker, Dr. Malcom Smith, is one of the nation’s leading authorities on bullying, peer victimization, and the epidemic of anger that our young people are experiencing. He uses the knowledge he has gained from responding to 54 school shootings to teach fifth through ninth graders about empathy, compassion, and caring. Mr. Smith works with high-risk students, but he also has experience working with teens who have not experienced trauma. He has

been caring for young people for over 40 years and will offer his insights at this event. For more information, visit the Grandparents as Parents of Kentucky website, http://gapofky.org.

For Royal Spring Middle School families… The Youth Service Center Coordinator Carrie Apple would like to take a group to this event and will cover the registration if a grandparent, relative, or kinship caregiver would like to attend. If you are interested, you can email her at carrie.apple2@scott.kyschools.us.

HOME GATHERINGS Want to get to know William and Cecelia better and fellowship with other Faith friends? The Transition Team has set up several opportunities to do just that and they’re called Home Gatherings! The first Home Gathering was in February at the Blackburns’ home and everyone who attended enjoyed spending time together in a casual home setting. The next Home Gathering is hosted by Cynthia and Lee Insko at their home (162 Carriage Lane) on Thursday, March 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. If you can't make it, there will be two more sessions later in the spring. We hope you’ll join us!

CARE BEAR AWARD Bearnabus is on the prowl again. This month he's decided to share a den with Matt Makaveli! Bearnabus was amazed at how much Matt does around the church, including wash dishes every Wednesday night, turn on and off lights, lock and unlock doors, fold the bulletins, get the mail, and basically anything else that is needed (and especially the things no one else really wants to do!). Bearnabus is excited to spend time with Matt mostly so that he can learn more about amateur radio and rock music. Congratulations, Matt, for being named the Care Bear Volunteer of the Month of the Year, and thank you for all that you do!
