Journey Into Faith Learning ~ Loving ~ Leading

Pastor's Article for September 2014 Only Through Prayer “This kind can come out only through prayer.” – Jesus (Mark 9:29) While on our RV vacation out west, Cara, Eli, Atticus and I went to San Francisco. My Aunt Junie and her fiancé Greg live in the Bay Area and took us to see the sites. On Monday, August 11, they took us to Alcatraz. Each of us donned a set of headphones for our own audio-guided tour. Down among the cramped cells, our attention was directed opposite the cells toward some barred windows that faced the city across the bay. The voice of an ex-convict who had been an Alcatraz inmate said at night you could hear people just across the bay laughing and having a good time and you ached to be free. As the tour continued, we heard more about what it was like to be locked up in Alcatraz. Little did we know that during the same time about six miles away on the northern shore of the bay in Tiburon, Robin Williams was struggling in a prison of his own. On Tuesday, we heard the news of his death. Shocked and deeply saddened I tried to imagine what he was going through and what if anything could have saved him. In Mark’s Gospel, chapter 9 tells the story of a boy plagued by a spirit that often tried to destroy the boy. The boy’s father pleaded with Jesus saying, “If you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.” Jesus assured the man, “All things can be done for the one who believes.” The man cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” After Jesus casts the spirit out of the boy, the disciples ask him why they were not able to cast it out. Jesus says to them, “This kind can come out only through prayer.” As the sun began to set on that Monday in San Francisco, we made our final stop. Greg let us out in front of Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Nob Hill. Cara and I had heard about this church at the Change the World Conference at Ginghamsburg UMC in April. The speaker, Diana Butler Bass, told about the Cathedral’s artist in residence Anne Patterson who was asked to create a visible symbol of the presence of God in the life of the church and in the city. By God’s grace, the church was open. When we entered we were immediately humbled and awed. Above us hung 32,000 colorful ribbons. End to end they would stretch 20 miles. Before the red ribbons were hung, hundreds of people from the community wrote their prayers, hopes and wishes. When the doors open and the wind blows even gently through the cathedral sanctuary, the ribbons shimmy and sway reminding all that God’s spirit is present. Without any conscious thought, all of us including kids entered a state of prayer as we walked the labyrinth embedded in the stone floor and later knelt at the altar rail. To view pictures of the church and the ribbons, see the pdf version of Faith Notes or visit the FUMC website: See the pictures on the next page As millions around the world grieve Robin Williams, let us find hope and renewed faith in prayer. May we be led to pray for one another and especially for all who struggle with chronic depression and/or drug and alcohol addiction. In ministry together,

Pastor Steve

For Such a Time as This The story of Esther in the Bible has always been a fascinating story to me. I love how someone completely unlikely is put in a place of leadership and alters the future of an entire race of people. Esther doubted her position many times and I’m sure questioned why God had placed her there but as we read her story today, the impact she had is amazing. As I read her story, I often wonder how many of us feel that similar anguish, of asking God “Why am I here?” Maybe you ask this question as you wrestle with finding your purpose in life. Maybe you ask this question, as you wrestle with going into school/work in the morning. Maybe you ask this question as you think about your family and the impact/or lack of impact they have had on you throughout your life. Whatever the case I’m sure that many of us have asked the question, “God, why am I am here.” Recently, I read a devotional thought from Tony Dungy in his book The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge that connect the story of Esther and our struggle for finding purpose. I would like to share his thoughts with you today as they help shed light on answering this challenging question of why God has placed us where we are presently.

Read the full story at http://faithumc-refuge.tumblr.com/ So as you reflect upon these thoughts today, I would like you to ask yourself (and your family), what great thing is God positioning you to accomplish right where you are today? The time is right for you to make a great impact with your family, school/job, or community, but you may have doubts and questions like Esther did. As you discover what your great moment is, my prayer is that you will have the boldness of Esther to step into this role God has placed you in and see your life dramatically altered

Calling all cooks! Faith Church Food Outreach Ministry is currently in need of volunteers who enjoy helping others by utilizing their cooking talents. Our team has been supplying dinners to individuals and families who have had a need for short term assistance with food preparation (post-hospital stays, physical therapy patients, families with newborns). Basically, it involves preparing one dinner consisting of a main dish, salad and dessert and delivering it to the given address. We have our volunteers on a rotating basis so that no one is responsible for over one or two meals per year. We need your help in maintaining this goal. If you can volunteer for an entire year or a portion of the year (thinking of our snowbirds), please call Nancy Share at 330-966-0221 or email mrsnc.home@yahoo.com. Your help will be most appreciated.

Second Wind Separated from his family in a bustling train station in Seoul, South Korea, six-year-old Kim Ji Soo was quickly swept up by an organization hoping to make money from the adoption of orphans. After three bleak years, he was transferred to the Holt Orphanage, where he learned about a God who "didn’t love us any less just because we were orphans. In fact, we felt that sometimes He may even have loved us more." Today, Jin Stearns is an author, an advocate for Holt International Children's Services, and an inspirational speaker with a powerful message of love and hope. Come and hear more of this amazing story!

There will be no program. For information call Emmajo Shearer 330-966-8730 Dear UMW Members and Women of Faith Church, Being a part of UMW has been such a blessing in my life. I have enjoyed being a part of Circle of Love. The women of this group have supported me in many ways and I will always be grateful for their continued support and love they have shown me and Amanda. For the past 2 1/2 years I have served as President of UMW. Many of you are aware that I was finished with my role in May of this year. Working full time, being on call, taking care of Amanda, running my business all with Kevin working in Minnesota has been a handful. As of yet I still have not found a replacement. This has weighed on me heavily through the summer. So with this letter I am reaching out to all of you asking who will find it in their heart to head this wonderful organization in our church? When I started this position I really had no idea what I was doing. Betsy Gorrel was chair of Circle of Love and offered to be by Vice-President. Together with many other chairs we put together what we lovingly call the Book of Knowledge. Every event we had was followed by making lists and instructions of everything that needed done. We have planned this next year to include the sale of pies and rice pudding, the cookie walk and UMW Sunday. Also we decided that with fewer projects on the agenda, fewer Board Meetings would be needed. Based on our schedule, Sept., Nov., Feb. and April seemed like appropriate times to meet. Please prayerfully consider how you might help UMW keep moving forward. Know that I am still available for questions and would love to help anyone transition into their new role. Look forward to hearing from you. Blessings, Kim Wallick 330-497-2462

FUMC Memory Garden In the Faith United Methodist Church Memory Garden, the wall with its beautiful centerpiece reminds us of John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” We are connected with Christ and remember the host of believers who preceeded us. At this time the wall contains the cremains of twenty persons who have been somehow connected to Faith Church or the East Ohio Conference. Nearly half of the 128 niches are sold. Take a stroll in the Memory Garden to reflect on the tranquility of this place. If you would like more information about the Columbarium in our Memory Garden, contact Sharyl Syler in the church office.

We would like to expand this ministry to more of our home-bound members and we need your help. We are looking for members who would take communion to our home-bound members each month. We like to pair these members to our communion servers so you can form a relationship. It only takes a short time and brings so much joy and a connection to our congregation for these members. We also need to find a couple more "subs" to take communion on a part time basis when a communion server cannot participate for a month. Please consider giving your time to this worthwhile ministry.

Worship Arts Study Implementation Group The work of the Worship Arts Study Group (WASG) is now complete. Chancel Choir Greetings Chancel Choir! I hope you have all enjoyed your summer off from choir. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Daniel Parsley and I am the new Worship Arts Coordinator at Faith United Methodist Church. In addition to my position as Worship Arts Coordinator, I am also serving as the new Director of Chancel Music at Faith. I am so excited to begin a new chapter of musical excellence in partnership with the Chancel Choir and to continue the wonderful tradition of music ministry at Faith UMC. There are a few FUMC happenings I am thrilled to announce! Our “Kick-Off” services will be held on Sunday, September 7 at our normal worship times. These services will feature all of our fall ministry opportunities and include musical offerings from all of our vocal choirs. Our plan is to sing as the Chancel Choir at both the 8:30 A.M. service and then be joined by the three youth choirs at the 11:00 A.M. service. We will have some opportunity for fellowship and breakfast in between the two services in Robinson Hall. To prepare for this, we will have our first activity on Saturday, September 6 at 12:30 beginning with a lunch then a short rehearsal from 1:30-2:30. We will sing a favorite anthem from last year for these services. I am so excited to get singing with you and to show the congregation what opportunities we have for music making at Faith UMC! You can read about me in the June Faith Notes (http://issuu.com/faithumc/docs/fn_jun_2014_worksheet_ -_including_h/1), but I am also hoping to let you know a bit about myself in a more informal manner through a ‘Meet and Greet’ Q&A session on September 3rd at 7:30 PM in the choir room. This is your opportunity to ask anything and everything that has been burning on your minds this summer and to sing together for the first time this season. It will be fun opportunity for you to get to know me as well as for me to get to know you all! I will then also be able to give more information for our fall schedule and repertoire list. Don’t worry if you cannot make that meeting—we will invite any to join in singing with the Chancel Choir as their schedules permits. Important dates to remember: Wednesday, September 3 7:30-9:00 PM “Meet and Greet” Q&A in the choir room Saturday, September 6 12:30 PM Lunch in Robinson and rehearsal at 1:30 in the choir room Sunday, September 7 “KickOff” Sunday Services at the 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. services Wednesday, September 10 7:30-9:00 PM First “regular” Chancel Choir rehearsal in the choir room I can’t adequately explain how excited I am to begin making music with you. This season is jammed pack with lots of different types of repertoire and exciting musical, spiritual, and social events. Some of the highlights include opportunities such as a winter choral cantata with orchestra in December as a culminating event of our Advent season, a community Lessons and Carols service hosted by Faith UMC, and the beginning of FUMC’s 8-person vocal chamber ensemble, Schola Cantorum. We can talk more about some of these exciting opportunities at our Q&A session on September 3. Looking forward to seeing you all! Please feel free to invite any who may not have received this email or any (past, present, or future members) who may have any interest whatsoever with participating in this wonderful group. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email me at dparsley@faithumchurch.org or drop me a line on my office phone. Cheers, Dan
