BEIJING - China has vowed to increase the nation's expanse of public sporting areas to 1.5 square meters per head of population by 2015, according to a five-year plan released on Monday. Under the plan drafted by the National Development and Reform Commission, or the country's top economic planner, and the General Administration of Sport, China will construct more public sports facilities in the next three years to guarantee people's rights to take exercises and encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The central government will earmark funds each year to ensure each county with suitable conditions builds a stadium, and half of all cities or regions of the same administrative level have indoor sports centers designed for residents of all ages, according to the plan. China will also continue to provide sports facilities for residents in its central and western regions, and support villages in those areas to build a hard court for basketball and two outdoor ping pong tables, it added.

A community sports center in Jiangsu province plays a big role in helping the elderly enjoy a new life through different activities. Provided to China Daily

Cheng Guangfu used to spend his mornings in front of the television after retirement. Not any longer. Nowadays, when he finishes his breakfast, he changes into his sports suit, puts on his sneakers and heads off with his table tennis paddles to a community sports center - a fiveminute walk from his apartment - to join his partner.

The community sports center is part of the city government's "10-minute walk" project, which aims to give all residents access to physical exercise within a short distance. The center has also attracted many clubs and associations for table tennis, badminton, tai chi and even chess and calligraphy. The Kunshan sports administration said it will invest more than 300 million yuan ($49 million) to set up fitness centers by 2015. According to Min Hongwei, director of the administration, the exercise groups have become a panacea for retired people. Despite the aging population, the sports facilities have greatly helped improve the quality of senior welfare, he said. Kunshan has been attaching significant attention to the development of mass fitness sports, with 5,041 sports fields across the city, covering an area of 7.56 million square meters, equivalent to 4.69 square meters per capita. "In addition to large-scale stadiums and venues, small fitness centers within walking distance are more important for residents," Min said.

Cheng said some of his table tennis partners, who used to suffer chronic diseases, have also witnessed a considerable physical improvement because of their exercise.

"By doing this, we have slowly helped deal with the loneliness and solitude brought about by the absence of children," Cheng said. "I'm also considering learning calligraphy from my buddies.

Chinese public pool often too crowded to swim?

The Proposed Aquatic & Recreational Centre

Brief Swimming has long been a symbol of physical strength in China. For most Chinese, pools are only a place to cool off, not to race. In the 1985 Ron Howard movie “Cocoon, a group of elderly adults discovers that a nearby swimming pool has the power to imbue them with new strength, enhanced energy and a more youthful sense of well-being. In China, one of the current issues is lack of public pools which cause most of the public pool overcrowded and unhygienic. The new aquatic centre will be conceived as a recreation and therapeutic aquatic facility destination for the community of Cultural District, New Suzhou. It will provide training opportunities for swimming, diving, water polo, and other aquatic sports as well as the capacity to host competitive swimming events.
