In modern days, Orang Seletar has to adapt with urbanization surrounding them while sustaining their sea culture tradition with the help of government and relevant authority through new housing settlement scheme. Thus, this design thesis proposal is to reimagine the future settlement of Seletar community in modern ways surrounded by urbanization and at the same can preserve their culture as Orang Laut. The house is designed on water and equiped with boat dock , fish farming , sea product, processing area which cater the needs of daily activities for the community. are able to achieve the first objective of the design thesis which is to preserve the culture of Orang Seletar as Orang Laut and at the same time serve the need of urban characteristic.Besides, Flexible house layout is implemented in the

design which can cater day and night activities of the community. The house foundation is designed to imitate mangrove roots which can attract aquatic animal and act as defence mechanism to protect existing mangrove area and prevent land corossion. This design strategy is able to achieve the second objective which to develop new housing scheme that integrate with nature so that it can preserve nature and sea water. Lastly, with this new housing scheme proposal, it is hope that Seletar community can preserve their culture in their own way as Orang laut in future and embrace the challanges of urbanization surrounding them. The concept of mangrove house is not only can be applied for the site Kampung Sungai Temun, but can be applied to anywhere

FLEXIBLE HOUSE

T

he floor plan was designed to respond to the family’s changing needs. The small corridor, which is close to the entrance in the centre of the floor plan, has three doors. One gives access to the kitchen. The other two doors, which are next to each other and separated by a short stretch of wall between them, give access to a long space. The extended central space that functions as a living / dining and study room can be divided into two rooms of the same size by means of sliding doors. The room next to the kitchen is designated to be a dining and living room and the rest of the area is dedicated to a study room, although these functions may be changed throughout time. The living room can be converted into a be droom by folding down beds that were incorporated into the design. On the other side of this extended space, there is a sequence of sliding doors that separate the living and dining room from a small room, one door, a short stretch of wall, another door (which mirrors the disposition

Flexible housing presents an opportunity for inhabitants to participate in the design of their dwelling and to arrange their living spaces according to their lifestyles and needs by creating new and temporary spaces during the day and night time. Based on both presented case studies, architectural spaces may be subject to change in order to meet inhabitants’ requirements. This entails the autonomy of incorporating various activities when necessary and enhancing the variability and versatility of the connections between adjacent spaces without any geometrical change in the form of the architectural spaces. In both of the apartments’ layouts, family members have been offered the opportunity to redesign and rearrange their household in accordance to their changing lifestyles. The dimensions of the rooms can vary when conforming new spaces and fulfilling new requirements without extra expenditure. If the number of house members increases, the dwelling’s layout will have the possibility to change to a new layout. In fact, the flexibility of space in housing seeks to create diversity, dynamism and adaptability which are decisive in order to satisfy inhabitants’ variable needs. Spatial organization determines the boundaries of the functions of space in housing. Hence, it’s main task being that of arranging spaces according to its residents’ requirements.

Mangrove Housing block is designated to protect existing matured mangrove area and new seedling mangrove area. the housing block form a line along the sea shore in the site and act as filter for soil errosion and protect the new mangrove seedling. Furthermore, the artificial mangrove will attract the aqua life and provide a shelter for small fish. The architectural form and construction embosses the culture and tradition of that of the Seletar Community, restoring honour and pride to that of the Orang Laut work while the urban strategy roadmap progressively advances the local economy of the fishing industry and mangrove ecology into the future of a internationally recognized fishing hub and sea level & climate change.

A

rtificial mangroves home to fish, crabs, and also oysters, which filter the water. They’re so attractive as an architectural kind of exhibit the tree itself, the way it branches, the way the roots and branches overlap can get a kind of continuous structural network, They look like real mangrove roots, but they’re white-made of concrete and ground up oyster shells. This cement and shell model will not produce the same exact nutrients as real mangrove trees. But she says just bringing back this structure increases biodiversity, and will help clear the water in the site.
