Things You Need to Know About Falconry Training

• Training for the art of falconry doesn’t always have to be a lengthy process. With proper dedication and skill, one can train a Harris Hawk to fly freely and return to the falconer within just a few weeks to a couple of months.

Weight Control • The hawks need to feel a bit hungry when it is allowed to fly, as they would come back to the falconers only for food. Hawks are weighed at the start of the training sessions and are weighed each and every day thereon. • The weight of your hawk needs to be reduced little at a time, gradually; perhaps just 10 percent at the beginning. • Flying weights and some other falconry products are required to be adjusted whenever it is necessary, as it’s not fixed figure and it would need adjustments according to the hawk’s fitness, muscle mass, and manning level further develops.

Manning • Manning is an essential process when your hawk would be trained to be really steady to anything that it sees while in its captive state. You need to make your hawk feel comfortable and familiar with the falconry products that you would be using, such as your falconry glove. It is expected of your hawk to return to you for the food placed on your gloves, and that would require the falconer to reduce its weight in order to make it feel hungry enough to do so. • Furthermore, your hawk could be easily carried around on your hand while it is still eating. It would help take your hawk’s mind away from any scary sights and sounds. To make meals last longer, specific pieces of meats are used that have bone, so that hawks take longer to finish. The longer it takes for the hawk to finish the meal, the more manning would your hawk get every day.

• If you try manning your hawk without tiring, then it would take a much longer period of time; also, it would never be as steady as it would have been if you had manned your hawk using tiring. Hawks which are constantly kept at a normal weight don’t really man well and are never well-trained. Manning requires some specific falconry products and gears too such as falconry perch Saudi Arabia, gloves, swivel, leash, and jess sets. • Always keep in mind that hawks come back to falconers only for food and not at all for affection, and this is why it needs to be left a bit hungry before it is allowed to fly freely.

Diet • When it comes to birds of prey, they eat raw meats only. It’s quite common for falconers to feed their hawks a day-old meat, but such diet wouldn’t really be sufficient in itself. Falconers are required to feed their hawks a diet that would include rats, rabbits, mice, quail, along with some vitamin/mineral supplements. Diet would also depend on the kind of hawk that you have. Different species of birds of prey have varied diet requirements. Which is why, you should consult a professional about your hawk’s diet.
