CINEMA O C TO B ER 2016
BO’NESS
CINEMA with warm welcome Hello. This month typifies the Hippodrome’s breadth of programming… we might only have one screen but you’ll still be spoiled for choice. There is quirky and loveable comedy from New Zealand and a highoctane Western proving yet again that the cowboy pic is hale and hearty. There are live shows with the best London’s West End has to offer, ranging from Shakespearean tragedy to ‘Miss Saigon’. The schools’ October Week brings Tim Burton’s latest Gothic fantasy, and we prepare for Halloween with a trio of classic Universal horror films each one introduced by a special guest (look out for our ‘3 films 3 friends’ ticket deal). We explore what growing older means to all of us with two Luminate screenings – Scotland’s creative ageing festival - and we round off the month with blockbuster book adaptation ‘The Girl on the Train’… join us for a post-screening audience discussion for anyone who’d like to stay on after the film on Thursday 3rd November. We look forward to welcoming you soon. Alison Strauss Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

See the iconic 1916 film by Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell, with Laura Rossi’s acclaimed music performed live at FTH. To mark the centenary of the end of the Battle of the Somme, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and Somme100FILM present this extraordinary and moving UNESCO-listed historical film. They aim to screen the film across the UK one hundred times, each accompanied by a live orchestral performance. Falkirk Community Trust is delighted to work with Falkirk Tryst Orchestra conducted by Robert Tait, to present the first (to date) of the screenings in Scotland. ‘The Battle of the Somme’ gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare and remains one of the most successful British films ever made: almost half the population of the UK as the time watched the film, hoping to catch a glimpse of a friend or a loved one. Somme100FILM are working with IWM, as members of the First World War Centenary Partnership, to show this film to audiences across the world alongside performances of Laura Rossi’s acclaimed score. Mom & Me + short 11:00 (cuppa)
Oscar Wilde wrote, “All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his.” With these words, Ken Wardrop opens ‘Mom & Me’ in which he travels to America to investigate the role mothers play in the lives of Oklahoma’s tough guys. From the drug addict trying to re-establish a connection with his mother, to the man whose mother is losing her memory to Alzheimer’s, Wardrop’s compassionate observation reveals the universality that underlies this most particular relationship. Short ‘A Wee Night In’ is an intimate, heart-warming portrait of love in old age, full of recognisable, comedic moments and will precede ‘Mom & Me’. 45 Years
Adapted from a short story by David Constantine, ‘45 Years’ is a quietly devastating film about a marriage in crisis, navigated by two actors at the absolute peak of their game: Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling. It’s the lead up to their 45th wedding anniversary and Kate (Rampling) and Geoff (Courtenay) seem to have an idyllic retired life. Despite all their years together, when a letter arrives from Switzerland that reveals some news about the woman he loved before they met, things begin to unravel. As much a film about memory as it is about marriage, ‘45 Years’ explores the very notion of how we construct our lives in the shadow of other people.
