Star, a free-spirited teenager on the brink of adulthood, leaves her troubled home in the American Midwest and hits the road with a mag crew - itinerant labourers who peddle publications door-to-door for long hours during the day and party hard at night, never certain where the job will lead next. Led by hard-driving manager Krystal and her seductive enforcer Jake, the crew becomes a surrogate family to Star, offering hope, love and the freedom that comes from being on the road. The Hippodrome is proud to present this special event in partnership with FEAT (Fiona Elizabeth Agnew Trust). Starfish is based on the true-life story of Tom and Nicola Ray (Tom Riley and Joanne Froggatt). When Tom puts his small daughter to bed one chilly December evening, he has everything a man could want – a beautiful wife and a second baby on the way to complete their perfect family. By the next morning, all is in jeopardy as Tom succumbs to a devastating illness.

When an injured carpenter finds himself in need of state welfare, he meets a desperate single mother who needs the same thing. Together, the duo discovers that negotiating through the red tape is a challenge.

The Sunday screening will be introduced by FEAT founder Craig Stobo. Fiona was Craig’s wife and they were together for nearly ten years. He lives in Perthshire with their young son. Craig is also a sepsis survivor and his vision and passion to stop deaths from sepsis through better understanding of the condition are the driving forces behind the establishment of FEAT.

There are shades of Dickens and Orwell in this emphatic drama”

'Marius', the first installment of what would come to be known as the 'Marseille Trilogy', is set in the colourful Old Port of Marseille, where ordinary but lovable characters are coping with everyday problems. Marius is a barkeeper torn between his wanderlust for exotic ports of call and his unspoken love for Fanny, the fishmonger’s beautiful daughter, who harbours a secret love of her own. The film poignantly explores the drama and humour inherent in the relationships of these unforgettable characters. Abel Gance’s heroic depiction of the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte is an undisputed cinema landmark. Famed for its ground-breaking technical innovations – including its famous triptych finale – and a running time of 5 ½ hours, Gance’s silent screen epic traverses many of the formative experiences that shaped Napoleon’s rapid advancement. Cool under pressure, Bonaparte overcomes fierce rivals, the deadly Terror and political machinations to seal his imperial destiny. Monumental and visionary, the story’s chapters play out in exhilarating fashion tied together by an incredible feat of editing and technical ingenuity. Featuring an equally mammoth recorded score composed and conducted by Carl Davis, the Hippodrome is proud to present this magnificent restoration in all its grandiose glory. We invite our audiences to be amongst the first to see this magnificent restoration and experience this exhilarating masterpiece as never before.

Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Hiroshima, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, protest, medical research, Chernobyl, MRI scans, Fukushima. The atomic world has been a paradise lost. Using only archive footage – news reports, cosmic imagery, x-ray photography, astronaut training films, etc – Mark Cousins’ acclaimed film captures the dreams and nightmares of the atomic age. A chilling, mesmeric, hallucinated visual experience enhanced by a haunting and (at-times) thundering score by Mogwai.
