CINEMA WITH A WARM WELCOME "I don’t think I’ve been as excited about any film in the last twelve months as I am about ‘La La Land’. I’m off to see a preview this evening ahead of its UK release and can’t wait (I know! Some folk have all the luck!). The film promises to be an intoxicating tribute to classic MGM musicals and very different to the director’s previous awardwinning film ‘Whiplash’. I’m expecting romance, dance numbers and spectacle, as well as to be reminded why I fell in love with movies in the first place.

THE HIPPODROME'S FAME AS A BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED VINTAGE PICTURE PAL ACE DRAWS CINEMAGOERS FROM FAR AND WIDE

Talking of movie milestone moments – do you remember when you first saw ‘Trainspotting’? What a bolt of energy it was, with its pumping soundtrack. How brutal, and how exhilarating it was to see Edinburgh on the big screen and to hear Scottish voices in a proper big movie. Hard to believe we’ve been waiting twenty years for a follow-up, but the wait is finally over and you can see T2 at the Hippodrome at the end of this month.

It’s a truism to say you’re never too old to enjoy great kids’ films (I’ll be taking my seat happily for ‘Ballerina’, ‘The Amazing Mr Blunden’ and ‘Sing’) but the Oscar nominated documentary ‘Life: Animated’ tells how watching much-loved family films together was not only a favourite family pass-time for the Suskind family but the key to unlocking communication with their autistic son who had lost his ability to speak. This remarkable and moving story uses a narrative about the power of films to move us as a metaphor for the power of a family’s compassion and love to change lives.
