There’s a Christmas crisis this year at Callendar House and Santa has a sleighful of problems. The reindeer have chewed through their fencing and escaped, running rampage through Falkirk, so Santa’s gone to round them up. The naughty elf has scoffed a trayful of the Tearoom’s festive mince pies, and is too sleepy to wrap any presents, so we need YOUR help to make the magic of Christmas this year. Will Santa find all of the reindeer and be back in time for tea? Will there be any mince pies to eat? Bring the whole family and enjoy a magical journey around Santa’s Scottish HQ. Festive snacks for big and small helpers included. It’s going to be great fun, but don’t take our word for it, here’s what visitors said of last year’s Adventure:

From the friendly tour guide to the naughty elf and activities for everything was well presented and thoroughly enjoyable. Gifts at Callendar House and The Helix Whether you’re looking for a bespoke gift or simply some extra festive decorations, there’s plenty to catch you eye in our gift shops. Jewellery from both Newbridge Silverware and Shrieking Violet plus a stunning new collection from Dumfries based Strands (Helix only), who use British slate inlaid with silver to create a unique and dramatic look. We’re now stocking photo frames from Whisky Frames, a Scottish company who create the frames from old whisky casks, with a Harris Tweed backing mount. This is a great gift for any whisky fan, as the frames are numbered so you can look up their history, and if you’re lucky, you may still get a whiff of the nectar itself! There will be few who will be able to resist the tempting treats from Brambles Foods and local company the Ochil Fudge Pantry, whose Christmas themed flavours should be available all year round.

Exclusive to The Helix Visitor Centre, we’ll be showcasing our Kelpie sculptures, 2018 Kelpie calendar and new branded merchandise for all our Kelpie fans. Over at Callendar House, besides lovely gift ideas, you can enjoy our gorgeous festive tree and decorations and sample our Taste of Victorian Christmas – free tastings of bygone Christmas - in the cosy Kitchen. Details at www.falkirkcommunitytrust.org from November. Alongside the Winter Warmth prints for sale, we also have a display of ceramics from locally born and bred designer Steph Liddle. Steph’s handmade creations can be seen in the Archive Cabinet at Callendar House. All profits from the sales in our shops go back to Falkirk Community Trust to develop culture and sports activity across the Falkirk area, thereby supporting us as a local charity and allowing us to invest back into services in the community.

Join us for our Magical Christmas Screenings!

The Nutcracker (U) Sat 9 Dec 7pm | Sun 10 Dec 2.30pm Filmed at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where the original Nutcracker was first performed over 120 years ago, this sumptuously traditional production of the all– time favourite ballet for the festive season is perfect Christmas entertainment for families and ballet fans everywhere. Tchaikovsky’s beloved score is conducted by the company’s Artistic Director Valery Gergiev with masterful staging and choreography by Vasily Vainonen. With: Alina Somova as Clara and Vladimir Shklyarov as The Nutcracker. 1h 45m

The Snowman (U) & The Snowman and the Snowdog (U) Sat 23 Dec 11am A Hippodrome tradition: delightful double bill of two animations. The first faithfully recreating the classic children’s Christmas tale by author Raymond Briggs which tells the magical story of a young boy’s snowman who comes to life and whisks him away to the North Pole to meet Santa himself. Followed by the charming sequel in which the hero builds a snowdog companion for his snowman, in honour of his dearly departed pet. 24m / 26m

It’s a Wonderful Life (U) Elf (PG) Sat 16 Dec 11am (Reel Saturday), 2.30pm (Autism Friendly) | Sun 17 Dec 2.30pm Good natured festive fun for all the family. After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his un-elflike size, Buddy (Will Ferrell), raised as an elf at the North Pole, is sent by Santa to the US in search of his birth father. 1h 33m

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (cert tbc) The next chapter in the Skywalker saga arrives at the Hippodrome from 29 December. Dates/times tbc – check website for details.

Fri 22 Dec 8pm | Sat 23 Dec 2.30pm, 7.30pm | Sun 24 Dec 11am, 2.30pm Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a Hippodrome outing for this much-loved cinefable. It is Christmas Eve and George Bailey (Stewart), dedicated, up-standing family-man, finds his beneficent company in danger of collapse, and contemplates suicide in the belief that it would be better for everyone if he was dead. But the prayers of his loved ones summon a novice guardian-angel named Clarence, keen to earn his wings by helping George. And so it passes that Clarence sets about showing George what things would have been like had he never been born… A Hippodrome sell-out every Christmas, early booking recommended.
