As ever there are many other titles to choose from – do remember to put both dates in your diary for the NT Live showings of Part 1 and Part 2 of ‘Angel’s in America’. I first saw this searing, epic play at the National Theatre in the early ‘nineties and am thrilled to have a chance to revisit it, thanks to the wondrous commitment the NT has to share such world-class theatrical events far and wide by satellite. Meanwhile I’m off to read the best-selling ‘Man Called Ove’ in time for our screenings at the end of the month.

Another film I’m very much looking forward to this month is ‘Baby Driver’. The premise is familiar: young man in love tries to break away from a life of crime (as a getaway driver in this case), but a first peak at the trailer and the social media #FanArtFriday campaign indicates it’s going to be something fresh and creative. We can expect a great backing-track too, as British director Edgar Wright (‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Hot Fuzz’) insisted, in his pitch to the studio financers, that his choice of music couldn’t be changed. Move over ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix’, there’s a new Baby in town.
(R) Weekly Saturday morning screenings.

As many of you will know I have a soft spot for silent films and I’m a big fan of the early cinema comedy giants like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Maybe that’s why I LOVE the Minions movies. Apparently Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, co-directors of ‘Despicable Me 3’, were inspired by Charlie Chaplin when they dreamt up the loveable, yellow, be-goggled ones. Just think of the Minions’ physical comedy and their nearly-nonsense language (which incidentally is voiced by director Coffin himself). It’s surely impossible for anyone – child or adult – to be immune from their charm…. In any case, I’m very excited to see their latest film and am already regretting giving away the children’s ‘fart gun’. They might have outgrown it, but I haven’t. Also, I heard a rumour that, as well as finding out about Gru’s long-lost twin, we might find out about Margo, Edith, and Agnes’ real mum!

A MAN CALLED OVE IS SWEDEN'S ANSWER TO FRANK CAPRA'S YULETIDE CL ASSIC IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE .”
Based on Fredrik Backman’s international best-selling novel, ‘A Man Called Ove’ is a heartwarming but never saccharine story of unexpected friendships and love. 59-year-old Ove is the grumpy neighbour who spends his days enforcing resident association rules and visiting his wife’s grave. When his new, boisterous neighbours move in, running down his mailbox in the process, an unlikely friendship forms. Winner of 13 major awards and 2 Oscar nominations, 'A Man Called Ove' is a must see at The Hippodrome this Summer. Dir. Hannes Holm / Sweden / 2015 / 1hr 56min Swedish/Persian with English sub-titles

LIVE AND ENCORE
America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. Andrew Garfield (‘Silence’, ‘Hacksaw Ridge’) plays Prior Walter along with a cast including Denise Gough (‘People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass). This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award winning two-part play, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, is one of London theatreland’s hottest tickets, directed by Olivier and Tony award winning director Marianne Elliott (‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ and ‘War Horse’). Part One: Millennium Approaches was first performed at the National Theatre in 1992 and was followed by Part Two: Perestroika the following year. 9

This Summer’s movie hit heads to The Hippodrome on release date and we can’t wait to welcome you and the kids along, make sure you check out our snack deals (p.3) and order via phone, online or on the night. Illumination, who brought audiences ‘Despicable Me’ and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, ‘Despicable Me 2’ and ‘Minions’, continue the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions in Despicable Me 3. Joining Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me 3 is Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker. Parker voices the role of villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date. The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). 12
