BO’NESS
CINEMA WITH A WARM WELCOME As the nights begin to draw in the prospect of settling in to the cosy Hippodrome becomes even more appealing. This autumn we have lined up some exceptional cinema experiences to bring you a warm cinema glow… We launch ‘Taste of Silents’ – a short season of glorious silent master-works with the very best musical accompaniment. By popular demand we begin with ‘Metropolis’: the most influential sci-fi of all time with dynamic live DJ set/soundtrack accompaniment by DJ Vangelis (2nd September). Later in the season look out for the romantic drama ‘Sunrise’, Harold Lloyd’s breath-taking, clock-face-hanging comedy ‘Safety Last’ and Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful thriller ‘Blackmail’. Each title and musician carefully picked to introduce the rich, immersive and captivating world of silent film with live music. This month also features ‘Cinema Rediscovered’: presenting new digital restorations and film print rarities back on the big screen. Our theme for this exciting mini-season is Manipulating the Message – a timely look at how the American media was being manipulated long before the World Wide Web. This is your chance to see power-house classics ‘Citizen Kane’ – regularly cited as the greatest American film ever made, ‘Ace in the Hole’ – Billy Wilder’s fierce satire of the media circus, and ‘Sweet Smell of Success’ – Alexander Mackendrick’s classic New York noir and sharp satire on the grasping world of newspaper’s gossip columns. Recent releases are a rich mix of comedy, bio-pic, fact-based drama and documentary, rounded off in style with ‘Victoria and Abdul’ – the new costume drama combining the talents of director Stephen Frears (‘The Queen’), writer Lee Hall (‘Billy Elliot’, ‘War Horse’) and actress Judi Dench (need I say more!). The story of an unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria and a young Indian clerk is oh-so reminiscent of ‘Mrs Brown’ but I think we’ll love it all the more for that. See you soon Alison Strauss, Arts Development Officer (Film and Media) 2

METROPOLIS SAT 2

Tickets £12 / £10
The Hippodrome is proud to present one of the most influential films ever made: Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’ (1927) with dynamic live DJ set/soundtrack accompaniment by Vangelis Makriyannakis. This stunning, landmark film is a dark vision of a futuristic city, divided between its upper-class, living luxuriously in skyscrapers high above the ground, and a working-class endlessly toiling in squalor below the city surface. The beautiful heroine Maria strives to unite the masters and the workers but her efforts are undermined by the overlord of Metropolis and an inventor who have created a robot creature in Maria’s likeness to incite the workers to riot. The mother of all sci-fi films and a major influence on Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’, George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’, as well as pop culture – referenced by Madonna, Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe and countless others – ‘Metropolis’ is amongst the most iconic films of all time… a cinema classic with a huge cult following. This is your chance to see the reconstructed and restored version (2010), pieced together by archivists across the world from the “Holy Grail” of film finds, to return the sci-fic epic to the original release version. Experience this landmark of cinematic science fiction re-imagined with a soundscape drawn from the vaults of kraut-electronica, industrial, minimalist electronics & post-rock.
