CINEMA O C TO B ER 2017
BO’NESS
CINEMA WITH A WARM WELCOME I’ve been told that our very own Grangemouth Refinery was the inspiration for Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ and if you’re driving to the Hippodrome past the Grangemouth site to see the iconic sci-fi’s sequel ‘Blade Runner 2049’ this month, the futuristic fiery stacks will, no doubt, put you in mind of the eye-popping future-world of a dystopian Los Angeles populated by replicants and detectives. According to Google it is actually Teesside’s Wilton Chemical Plant that can lay claim to influencing the film’s visual style but if anyone out there knows better do get in touch… I know which version of the truth I prefer. Another of our major new releases this October is Stephen King’s ‘It’. The terrifying Pennywise clown has stalked the nightmares of a generation, thanks to the nineties mini-series, and with this new adaptation the evil shape-shifter looks set to be scaring the wits out of audiences all over again. We dare you to see it! Altogether less scary, but perhaps not as whimsical as you might imagine given the WW1 theme running through it, is ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’. The film reveals the inspiration behind A.A. Milne’s creation, Winnie-the-Pooh and all the inhabitants of The Hundred Acre Wood. The books of children’s author A.A. Milne have a great deal to teach us… Like the value of friendship, that every cloud has a silver lining and – a lesson ringing in my ears as I write this – “It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like “What about lunch?”. Or indeed… “What about a movie!” There are many more movies to choose from including our Luminate Festival of Creative Ageing film selection – the wry and beautiful ‘Hotel Salvation’ (see page 11), the powerful crime thriller ‘Wind River’ (from the director of one of my favourite films of last year ‘Hell or Highwater’), two terrific screenings with live music in our ‘Taste of Silents’ season’, plus a special event screening of Powell and Pressburger’s ‘The Spy in Black’ marking the 100th anniversary of Orkneybased writer’s publication of the original novel. See you soon! Alison Strauss, Arts Development Officer (Film and Media) 2
