Great Expectations A stellar cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane and Ralph Fiennes feature in Mike Newell’s (Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire) faithful take on the great Dickens’ classic, which should satisfy literary buffs as well as film lovers. Victorian London and orphan Pip finds himself the recipient of some property courtesy of a mysterious benefactor. The gift grants him the opportunity to make a life for himself as a gentleman and to meagerly pursue the lovely, yet hardhearted Estella, though fate, or maybe a darker force seems to be keeping them apart.
“Frankly, it’s almost a completely perfect piece of filmed entertainment. Characters have rarely been this rich on screen. Scripts rarely this textured. And funny…. some films just come together in sound, word and vision, and they just sing. And this is one.” The Times Monday 21 January • 7.30pm (2h 8m) Thursday 24 January • 7:30pm (2h 8m)
