As we go to press with this exciting new programme for the March – May season at the Hippodrome we note that our audience numbers have already surpassed those of this time last year. I’m sure that to some degree we can thank a few notable block-busting releases for this pleasing state of affairs (the ‘Les Misérables’ effect!) but it’s good to see that some of the less well known but excellent movies in the programme, have been well attended too. After all the excitement of the BAFTAs and the Oscars, this season finds more room for some of the smaller independent releases – some by first-time directors or starring acting newcomers, others UK or European releases that have attracted awards or audience attention but lack the big marketing budgets of starrier projects. If you can, I urge you to pencil a date in your diaries for these wonderful films… titles like ‘Amour’ – described by critics as “incomparably beautiful”, ‘I Wish’ – widely given 5-stars and inspiring the comment: “simply put, it’s hard to remember a better film about pre-teen life”, and ‘The Hunt’ – which explores trust, love, responsibility, and ultimately has the power and impact of the very greatest works of art. Beyond the film screenings, our evaluation also indicates that the range of Hippodrome 100 centenary initiatives during 2012 have had the desired impact: the profile of the venue and the town continues to rise and more visitors than ever are coming along, bringing a friend or family member, and returning again and again. The final centenary initiative has been the Public Art Legacy Project, for which over 150 primary school children in Bo’ness worked with artist Susheila Jamieson to create works inspired by the Hippodrome. The results of their hard work are currently on display in the Bo’ness Library (until 19th March) and this excellent show is well worth visiting. Like the Hippodrome itself, our Festival of Silent Cinema, now in its third year, has found a special place in the hearts of our audiences. 2
They use words like “warm and welcoming”, “delightful”, “brilliant” and “amazing” to describe the atmosphere, the programming, the building and the staff. If you have been part of the Festival in our first two years you’ll know to expect an intriguing and varied selection of films, the finest musicians performing superb film scores and improvisations, and a pervading air of excitement and discovery. Each event in the extended five day programme has been carefully chosen and developed to inspire you with the thrill and joy of silent cinema. You’ll find an outline of the programme on pages 15 - 19 but you can see the full details at hippfest.co.uk. Do join us for this very special event in the Hippodrome calendar, whether an old friend of the festival or a new visitor, about to be captivated by the magic of silent cinema for the first time. Later in the season there will be lots of buzz in Bo’ness for the Victorian Street Fair on Sunday 26th May. To join in the celebrations the Hippodrome will host a ‘doors open’ afternoon from 12noon to 2pm during which anyone is free to pop in and have a look round the auditorium. We’ll be screening a selection of early films made before the turn of the last century and the Hippodrome café will be open serving hot and cold drinks and snacks. And after all the Victoriana you can slide in to the 1920s and settle down for the 2.30pm or 7.30pm screening of glitzy glamorous new film directed by Baz Luhrmann: ‘The Great Gatsby’. We’ve got some terrific music, ballet and theatre shows lined up for our live and ‘encore’ screenings programme. If dance is your thing you could follow-up an evening marvelling at the principles of the Bolshoi Ballet on 7th March, with the breath-taking documentary ‘First Position’ (11th – 13th May) about the ballet stars of tomorrow. And of course there’s much, much more…See you soon. Alison Strauss Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

Amour
Zero Dark Thirty
Safety Not Guaranteed
Belying its apparently gloomy subject matter this film about octogenarians, Georges and Anne, is touching and unforgettable. Two of France’s most venerated actors play the married couple - a pair of retired music teachers who live a contented and relatively active life, attending classical concerts, listening and playing music together and generally going about their domestic routine. When Anne has a funny turn one day and her health begins to deteriorate, the couple’s bond of love is demonstrated with more clarity than ever. Both devastating and inspirational Haneke’s latest demands to be seen.
For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate the man held responsible for killing 3,000 people in the 9/11 attacks: Osama bin Laden. This rigorous, controversial and, at times, harrowing thriller reunites the Oscar winning team of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal (‘The Hurt Locker’) for the story of history's highest profile manhunt, uncovering the dark side of warfare and leaving you questioning the ends versus means debate in the context of the War on Terror.
From the producers of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, and sharing some of that indie hit’s quirky sweetness, this is a rom-com / sci-fi that blends human drama with plenty of laughs. Apparently inspired by a real classified ad, the film follows three cynical magazine employees who set out to look for the story behind a newspaper notice placed by paranoid but likeable supermarket worker Kenneth, who is seeking a companion to go back in time. Together, these oddball characters embark on an unexpected journey in a film with life-affirming lessons about the power of belief.

I Wish
The Hunt
Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are the distinguished leads in this straightup biopic charting the moment in the celebrated British director’s career when he and his wife and long-time professional collaborator – Alma Reville – were working on that most iconic of horror films: ‘Psycho’. Hopkins’ Hitch is all the things that popular insights would lead us to expect: a man of perverse obsessions haunted by dark childhood episodes, whilst his support cast, playing Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins, are entertaining and convincing.
A superbly acted, insightful modern fairy tale about two young boys trying to reunite their divided family. In the wake of their parent’s divorce, 12-year-old Koichi and his younger brother (played by his real life sibling) have been split up against their will. When Koichi discovers that a new bullet train line is due to open connecting the two towns they live in, he determines that the energy generated by two trains passing each other will work a miracle, and their wish to be reunited will come true.
An utterly gripping drama about honourable and unassuming nursery school teacher Lucas, whose innocent bond with a young girl in his charge leads to a terrible misapprehension and ultimately triggers his painful fall from grace. Taut from its opening minutes, with every character and relationship beautifully drawn and performed, this immensely powerful film is much more than a straightforward study of crowd hysteria, achieving tremendous nuance with its perfectly constructed narrative about a life pulled needlessly apart.
Dir: Sacha Gervasi / US / 2012 / 1h 38m With: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel

Cloud Atlas
The director of ‘Old Boy’, Chan-wook Park’s first English language feature is an unsettling mix of Gothic horror and Suspense, starring Mia Wasikowska (‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Jane Eyre’) as India - bereaved following the death of her father, and variously beguiled by, and suspicious of, her Uncle Charlie, who comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. Family tensions are infused with Hitchcock-ian overtones, plentiful Freudian themes and cultural references, from ‘Dracula’ to ‘Hamlet’, in this brilliant but queasy auteur piece.
Keanu Reeves takes the audience on a tour of the past and a look into the future of filmmaking in this involving documentary probing the impact of recent digital innovation. In the past twenty years the standard format of recording moving images has been overtaken by the evolution of new filmmaking technology. Reeves as host conducts entertaining and in-depth interviews with an impressive array of Hollywood luminaries such as Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, George Lucas, Danny Boyle and many more. Packed with satisfying nitty gritty detail but never beyond the comprehension of a lay person, this is a must-see for any film fanatic.
An ambitious adaptation of the awardwinning novel by David Mitchell deploying a cast of notables in multiple roles and in intertwining stories that move through time from ancient civilisations to future worlds . Action, mystery and romance weave through a story studded with gorgeous cinematic moments in an exploration of the ongoing consequences of individuals’ actions. Described variously by critics as “spectacular”, “visionary” and also “fascinating but flawed” this film, demands that you make up your own mind.

Shell
Robot and Frank
Broken
This award-winning, beautifully photographed film marks the arrival of Scottish writer-director Scott Graham as a distinctive new voice in British cinema. Shell is a motherless 17-year-old girl on the cusp of womanhood who lives and works at a remote petrol station in the desolate Scottish Highlands. Apart from the occasional passing customers and regulars, Shell’s only company is her reserved father Pete, to whom she is devoted. Struggling to re-imagine her role within the family and life in general Shell’s emotionally charged connection with her father becomes gradually more difficult and disturbing.
In the near future, the belligerent and forgetful Frank has two grown children who are concerned he can no longer look after himself. Against the old man's wishes, Frank’s son buys a humanoid robot programmed to improve Frank’s physical and mental health. Hostile at first, Frank gradually begins to enjoy the company of his artificially intelligent companion, especially when he grasps the potential boon to his own erstwhile cat burgling antics. A playful and thoughtful indie drama led by a brilliant performance from Fank Langella (‘Frost/ Nixon’) as Frank.
Newcomer Eloise Laurence is terrific as Skunk - an 11-year-old girl at the dawn of an idyllic summer holiday in this winner at the year’s British Independent Film Awards. The happy prospect of care-free days stretching before her is cut short when a vulnerable young man suffers a savage attack by a neighbour, and Skunk’s innocence begins to drain away. A rich and expertly controlled portrait of interlocking lives in a suburban estate, with the tender father-daughter relationship of Skunk and Archie (Tim Roth) at the heart of a gentle and sorrowful tale.

Identity Thief
Les Misérables
Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle (‘127 Hours’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘Trainspotting’) returns to the big screen from the Olympics opening ceremony with this psychological thriller about fine art thieves. Things go sour for auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) when he falls in with a criminal gang to steal an extremely valuable painting but forgets where he has stashed it. The gang’s impatience with their accomplice takes a mind-bending turn when they engage a hypnotherapist in an attempt to raid Simon’s brain for clues for the stolen masterwork’s location.
A curse of the modern age is the starting premise for this new comedy from the director of ‘Horrible Bosses’. Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (McCarthy ‘Bridesmaids’) to live it up on the outskirts of Miami, where the self-appointed queen of retail buys whatever takes her fancy. However the ID she uses to finance her sprees belongs to mild mannered office worker Sandy (Bateman -‘Juno’) who lives 2,000 miles away. With his finances out of control, Sandy must embark on a disasterstrewn road trip to wrangle the con artist back to his home town.
Further to a sell-out run at the Hippodrome in February we present another chance to see this epic film adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation, directed by Tom Hooper (‘The King’s Speech’). Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France the film tells the story of ex-prisoner Valjean (Jackman) who breaks parole and is hunted for decades by ruthless Javert (Crowe). Jackman and Crowe do a fine job in the two male leads but the film belongs to Hathaway who gives a career defining performance as factory worker Fantine.

The Look of Love
The Great Gatsby (cert tbc)
Character study of Paul Raymond - the British entrepreneur who began his show business career as a mind-reader in a cabaret act and went on to become Britain's richest man. As well as charting Raymond’s growing empire of gentleman's clubs, porn magazines and nude theatre, Winterbottom’s film (’24 Hour Party People’, ‘A Mighty Heart’) delves in to Raymond’s personal life which was as colourful as his revue shows though marred by personal tragedy. This is meaty material and Coogan’s performance is utterly convincing as a man apparently glorying in hedonism but always in control.
Costumes by Prada, music by Jay-Z, Prince and Lady Gaga, screenplay by Luhrmann and his collaborator on ‘Romeo + Juliet’, this is a guaranteed treat for fans of the great Australian director and of F. Scott Fitzgerald's set-text stalwart. 1922 – in an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings and sky-rocketing stocks – Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his New York neighbour, Jay Gatsby, the beautiful and unattainable Daisy and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

Inspired by true stories from local families in Fife, ‘The Happy Lands’ follows the journey of law-abiding citizens who become law-breakers in a heroic battle against the state. “Remarkable, original and daring…a shining beacon of hope” Tony Garnett, (Producer ‘Kes’, ‘Cathy Come Home’).

Wreck-It Ralph
Jack the Giant Slayer
Be prepared to travel thousands of years back in time to meet the world's first modern family. Nicolas Cage is the voice of Grug: patriarch of the Crood family who set out on a quest to find a new home after their cave is destroyed. During their journey, they meet free-thinking Guy with his cool new 'creations' such as fire, dazzling Grug’s eldest girl Eep but sparking some age-old father-daughter conflicts. Top-notch family fun from the reliable Dreamworks studio.
A clever, fun and colourful Disney adventure built on joyful nostalgia for ‘eighties video arcade games. When Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) gets tired of being the bad guy in the ‘Fix-It Felix’ game, he decides to find a new game where he can be the hero fighting giant alien bugs alongside squadron leader Calhoun (Jane Lynch). Packed with inventive verbal and visual gags the script has a lot of fun with a multitude of familiar video game characters such as Pac-Man and Mario.
The childhood fairy-tale gets a modern revamp in this junior action pic directed by Bryan Singer (‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘X-Men’) and starring Nicholas Hoult (‘Warm Bodies’, ‘About a Boy’). The film re-imagines a world in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened when young Jack leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom hoping to rescue a kidnapped princess. In the recent tradition of fairy-tale updates Singer’s film thrillingly expands on a traditional tale adding a Ray Harryhausen sensibility, enlivened by the very latest in CGI and motion-capture technology.

This House by James Graham It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes. James Graham’s biting and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a conflicting chorus of MPs amidst the madness of the Westminster village. Weekly Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below). Look out for the Jeely Jar Screening when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. This season: Chaplin and Keaton Double Bill (see page 16).
AD Audio Description service for blind or partially sighted people which supplies a spoken description of action not revealed by the film’s dialogue. Pick up your headphones from the Hippodrome staff.
