New research on cinema-going, commissioned by Regional Screen Scotland, has just been published and the results are a resounding affirmation of local cinemas. The findings show that audiences value a trip to the flicks as a fundamental part of life – despite the competition from streaming and downloads – and even more so when the cinema has strong links with the communities in which they are based. A massive 83% of respondents said that they preferred watching films as part of an audience rather than at home. 97% were satisfied with the quality of experience at their local cinema, and 72% described their local cinema as ‘extremely important’ for the local area (a further 24% thought it was ‘important’). The Hippodrome figured prominently in the research, alongside other models like the four screen family-run business in Galashiels, small film societies and the mobile screen machine which tours the Highlands and Islands. We are proud of what the research had to say about the Hippodrome’s connection with the immediate and more extended community, and about our outreach, education and engagement work which forges links that go beyond a simple ticket and popcorn transaction. Hip hip… the Hippodrome! In terms of local links you’d be hard pushed to top the appearance of Bo’ness-born Ross Anderson in ‘The Silent Storm’. Ross started his screen career in TV’s ‘Private Lomax’ and made his big screen debut in this Scottish love-triangle drama filmed on Mull and costarring A-listers Damian Lewis and Andrea Riseborough. He has gone on to work with the likes of Angeline Jolie, the Coen Brothers and Michael Fassbender and we are looking forward to welcoming him to the Hippodrome on 30th June to talk about his acting career and life as a film star!

The fact that the Hippodrome sits in the heart of the community does nothing to diminish its pulling power mind you. This week I was emailed by a woman from New Hampshire in the United States, keen to learn of the forthcoming programme so that she could plan her visit accordingly, and at the weekend we welcomed a couple from Canada who had Bo’ness attractions on their discerning ‘must-see’ list for their three week visit to the UK. Whilst the venue continues to draw folk from far and wide, the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema is making a bit of a splash internationally as well. In June the Festival commission of a new score for ‘Stella Dallas’ which premiered at HippFest earlier this year, will be performed at the prestigious Il Cinema Ritrovato (Cinema Rediscovered) in Bologna, Italy. As you will see, the programme for the summer includes all the major family holiday releases, whilst extra effort has been made to inject as much variety as possible with extra slots to accommodate alternative and adult fare. So you can, for example, enjoy the latest from the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes as well as classics starring James Mason and Ralph Richardson. These two British cinema luminaries feature in a pair of films to mark forty years since the death of the great director Carol Reed… most famous for ‘The Third Man’ but whose earlier works richly deserve to be seen again. We have even found time in the busy schedule for a special event to tie in with the Park Gallery’s latest exhibition: ‘Locomotives’, with a screening of ‘The Why?sman’. The film and the exhibition explores the work of one of Scotland’s most well-loved artists: George Wyllie, admired by the great and the good from Sean Connery to Liz Lochead, and described by the director Murray Grigor as “one of the most popular yet officially misunderstood artists in Scotland”. See you soon… Alison Strauss, Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

Captain America: Civil War

Florence Foster Jenkins

Marvel/Disney’s latest action-packed superhero blockbuster in which the antagonism between star-spangled Captain America and self-indulgent Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) develops in to a deep rift, dividing the Avengers. The Russo brothers have taken the helm from Avengers’ writer/director Joss Whedon (and staked a confident claim on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this magnificently entertaining smash that metes out breathtaking set-pieces, character-driven drama and humour.

With peculiar synchronicity, you wait for a biopic about the celebrated wealthy New York heiress who attempts to become an opera singer despite her horrible singing voice… and two come along at once. Hot on the heels of last season’s ‘Marguerite’, Stephen Frears latest (‘Philomena’, ‘The Queen’) sees Meryl Streep as the deluded wannabe opera star opposite Hugh Grant as her loyal husband. The actors make a delightful pairing, appealingly drawing all the humour, pathos and humanity from this decidedly eccentric but true story.

Our Kind of Traitor Adapted from the ever-reliable John le Carré’s novel this contemporary thriller stars Ewan McGregor and Naomie Harris as an ordinary couple holidaying in Marrakech, befriended by a charismatic Russian (Skarsgård), and unwittingly drawn in to the dangerous world of international espionage and dirty politics spearheaded by Damian Lewis’s ruthless, lone wolf MI5 operative. With high, occasionally Bond-like, production values and a dynamic performance by Skarsgård in particular, this is a meaty tale of political and financial corruption. Dir. Sing Street

Love & Friendship

Money Monster

A thoroughly charming film written and directed by John Carney (‘Once’) who again uses Dublin as the backdrop for his perfect amalgam of music and story-telling. Fourteen-year-old Conor finds respite from a strained home life and a new tough school in the figure of über-cool Raphina and, with the aim of winning her heart, he invites her to star in his band's music videos. Undeterred by the fact that he is not yet part of a band, Conor sets about immersing himself in the era’s 80s music, writing lyrics and shooting videos.

Gorgeous and playful period drama adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Lady Susan’… Beautiful young widow Susan Vernon visits the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colourful rumours about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and a future for her eligible but reluctant daughter, Frederica. Matters are complicated by the simultaneous attentions of young, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, rich but silly Sir James Martin and the divinely attractive, but married, Lord Manwaring.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts co-star respectively as stock market TV pundit Lee Gates and his producer Patty, dealing with a dramatic hostage situation at the hands of an aggrieved bankrupt viewer (British rising star Jack O’Connell, recently pipped to the part of Han Solo by Alden Ehrenreich). During a tense standoff broadcast to millions on live TV, Lee and Patty must work furiously against the clock to unravel the mystery behind a conspiracy at the heart of today's high-tech global markets. Telling the important story of Jesse Owens, the celebrated athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrust him onto the world stage of the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, in defiance of Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy and Nazi ideology. An enthralling and inspiring film about courage, determination and tolerance in which James evinces Owens’ dignity and pride, both in Germany and when enduring the horrifyingly relentless racism of his own country.

Stylish neo-noir directed by Stefano Sollima, best-known for his award-winning TV series ‘Gomorrah’. Rome 2011, and the suburb of Ostia is the subject of a giant real estate project intended to transform the harbour of Ancient Rome into the Las Vegas of today. But the place soon becomes a battlefield where criminals, the Catholic Church and politicians fight and shift allegiances ruthlessly. The stage is set for an infernal and bloody showdown. Be part of the start of this compelling and intense saga which is due to roll out as a classy ten-part Netflix series planned for 2017.

‘Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig reunites with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy for this re-boot of the much-loved ‘80s original, substituting the male leads with four of the funniest women working in film today. The Commune (cert tbc)

Suicide Squad (cert tbc)

Oscar nominee Thomas Vinterberg (‘The Hunt’, ‘Festen’) apparently drew on his own unconventional childhood for this emotional drama about a group of people who set up a commune in ‘70s Denmark only to find the strains of breaking from convention threatens to unhinge the easygoing utopia they have tried to create. Trine Dyrholm is terrific as near middle-aged Anna, the beautiful and accomplished wife of university lecturer Erik, who decides to inject some spontaneity into their lives by inviting friends to join them in a huge inherited house.

Adapted from the DC Comics series this new all-guns blazing franchise introduces a group of super-villains given a shot at redemption in exchange for embarking on a deadly heroic mission. The “worst of the worst” are headed up by Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), with one of DC's most infamous villains, the Joker (Jared Leto) taking up the mantle of the movie’s bad guy. Thanks to a savvy marketing campaign the ‘#Skwad’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and rounds off this season at the Hippodrome with a bang.

Where You’re Meant to Be Following the packed preview at the Hippodrome in April, we are delighted to present this Scottish documentary featuring cult-pop raconteur and Falkirk bairn Aidan Moffat. The former Arab Strap frontman sets out to explore Scotland’s past by rewriting and touring its oldest songs. But he doesn't count on running into formidable 79-yearold Sheila Stewart – a travelling balladeer who upturns Moffat's folk assumptions. He believes the old songs are ripe for updating. She does not. With Stewart's wrath ringing in his ears, Moffat embarks on an eccentric road trip across the Highlands, before facing Stewart for an unlikely final showdown. Dir. Calamity Jane

Odd Man Out

The Fallen Idol

Whip-crackin’, gun-totin’ Doris Day stars in this hugely enjoyable musical, playing “Calamity” Jane Cannary: a gunslinger riding shotgun on the Deadwood stage in wild west Dakota, bringing in the mail and fancy goods, while spraying the ‘injuns’ with bullets and flirting with local legend “Wild Bill” Hickok (Howard Keel). Jane holds her own in the male dominated Deadwood, but things go awry when she inadvertently introduces a feminine rival to the man she loves.

To mark forty years since the death of the great Carol Reed the Hippodrome presents two of the director’s finest films this month. We begin with this powerful suspense drama starring James Mason as Johnny McQueen, leader of a quasi-IRA group. When he's wounded in a botched robbery, he becomes the object of an intense police manhunt, pursued by the Law and by Kathleen, the woman who loves him, desperate to reach him before the police do.

“What could be better than watching Doris Day reprise her signature role, whipcracking away in buckskin as the Deadwood stage comes a-rolling in over the hills?” Total Film

“This is Reed’s arrival, marking a path for England’s postwar panache. The movie has a vaunted place in the context of British cinema, and deservedly” The List

Our second Carol Reed tribute screening this month is the masterful adaptation of Graham Greene’s story ‘The Basement Room’.Told from a child's eye view (but by no means a children's story) the film centres on Philippe, the young son of a diplomat, who idolises Baines, his father's butler. When Baines' wife is found murdered and Baines is implicated, Philippe tries everything to point the investigation away from the butler but only succeeds in making matters worse. “A classically well-made film that is both unexpected and exceptionally gripping.” Los Angeles Times
