As I write this, many of my film programming colleagues at other Scottish cinemas are hob-nobbing with the glitterati on the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival… they post Facebook reports about how it’s really not as glamorous as all that, how all those screenings and VIP parties are just a big bore, and they can’t wait until the whole rigmarole is over and they can get back to the hoovering and washing up. I don’t believe a word of it… except for the feedback about the new Pixar animation ‘Inside Out’. Reports from the red carpet are that this latest from the creators of ‘Up’, and ‘Finding Nemo’ is so good that it should be up for the Palme d’Or. Habitually impassive and hard-to-please critics (and seasoned Scottish programmers!) have apparently been guffawing in their seats and weeping into their hankies. So I’m thrilled to report that we will be screening ‘Inside Out’ from the date of release. By all accounts it promises to be captivating for kids and adults alike. And on that note, at the age of (… ahem), I’m not ashamed to say I love the Minions and can’t wait for their new big screen outing…. This is the other big release summer film and our Hippodrome screenings, beginning the first date of the film’s UK release, on the last day of term, are a great way to kick off the school holidays. Notwithstanding the big summer blockbusters, the broad range of our programme is in evidence in these pages – including some classic Tom and Jerry (!!), Wim Wenders’ latest documentary, the German historical drama ‘Phoenix’, and the film adaptation (with satellite transmitted Q&A) of ground-breaking National Theatre musical ‘London Road’. The latest crop of releases is particularly strong on genre films, including the straight-up, big screen incarnation of TV’s ‘Spooks’ and the conversely hilarious take on espionage pics: ‘Spy’, starring Melissa McCarthy (‘Bridesmaids’), finally given the starring role she deserves.
If, like me, you’re a fan of the Western genre (and I know there are quite a few of you out there after the large numbers that turned out for the hugely enjoyable screening of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ last season) you’ll find much to enjoy in ‘Slow West’… think treacherous bounty hunters and brave young bucks on the American frontier. An often repeated observation is that Howard Hawks was the master of many genres ranging from Westerns, film noir, screwball comedy and crime, all the while retaining the thumb print of his distinctive directorial style. Look out for our Hippodrome Highlights screening of a new restoration of Hawks’ ‘Only Angels Have Wings’ – a melodrama, despite its non-domestic setting, starring matinée idol and Hawks’ regular: Cary Grant. The Hippodrome highlights this season are an eclectic selection. We have two screenings of Tod Browning’s infamous ‘Freaks’. This film is considered of great cinematic importance and, in 1994, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. However, audiences when it was released were deeply shocked by the “deformed” cast – despite the point being that the real ‘monsters’ in the film are the normal-bodied people who are greedy, selfish and murderous – and the film was banned. When the ban was lifted its rating in the UK started at an X and has gradually come down the scale to now being a 12A. After years of limited availability the international distributor Hollywood Classics have launched a digital release of the classic from the most complete material available. I hope all who take the opportunity to see this horror legend on the big screen find it thought-provoking and perhaps even touching. The remarkable true story of an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Mirren) who, sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt's famous painting 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I'. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Feature film adaptation of the groundbreaking National Theatre stage work documenting events in 2006, when residents of the quiet rural town of Ipswich were shattered by the murders of five women. The film follows the community who found themselves at the epicentre of the tragic events, and is based on interviews conducted with real residents, using their own words set to a musical score.

A graceful and pleasingly old-fashioned film featuring fiction’s best-loved detective. Shortly after the close of WWII an aging Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellan) returns from Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now Holmes faces his twilight years tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits an unsolved case that forced him into retirement.
The inspirational crowd-pleasing story of unruly 11-year-old Stet whose rebellious behaviour belies his remarkable musical gift. Dustin Hoffman heads up the stellar cast, playing Carvelle, a demanding, oldschool choirmaster who reluctantly accepts the challenge of polishing this diamond in the rough. An uplifting ugly duckling tale that makes the spirits soar thanks to the celestial voices of the young boy singers.
Narrated by a cynical Irish bounty hunter called Silas (an excellent Michael Fassbender) this new Western follows the journey of 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who has sailed across the sea from Scotland to search the American frontier for the woman he loves. For Silas though she is a woman who happens to have a hefty bounty on her head. The mythic qualities of a true Western are underscored by arresting cinematography and perfectly orchestrated shoot-outs in this fable of unrequited love.

An illuminating documentary about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado made by his son and the multi-award winning director of ‘Wings of Desire’: Wim Wenders. Salgado is renowned for his striking photographs documenting the nightmarish lives of gold miners in Brazil, and victims of international conflicts. But now, at the age of 70, he has turned his lens to environmental activism and nature photography in a tribute to the world’s beauty. This Oscar-nominated story of the Salgado’s life reveals a magnetic character and a peerless talent.
Meryl Streep stars as Ricki, a guitar heroine who gave up everything for her dream of rock’n’roll stardom, but is now returning home to make things right with her offspring, including recently divorced Julie (played by Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer). Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (‘Philadelphia’, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’) loads this sterling drama with music and with terrific performances, including Kevin Kline’s turn as Ricki's longsuffering ex-husband.
A sure-fire action-comedy from ‘Home Alone’ director Chris Columbus, just in time for the local September school holiday… When intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. The US President has to call on his childhood best friend – '80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler) – to lead a team of old-school arcaders to defeat the aliens and save the planet.

Immaculate restoration of a great cinema classic from the master ‘auteur’ Howard Hawks: director of the finest films across a multitude of genres including ‘The Big Sleep’, ‘Red River’, ‘Bringing up Baby’ and ‘Scarface’. This nail-biting adventure, spiked with cracking dialogue, is set in the remote Andes and follows a close-knit group of pilots who risk their lives daily for their exacting boss. The cast of big-screen legends includes Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Rita Hayworth as a faithless vamp, in her first important A-picture role.
Now regarded as a landmark film but wildly controversial when it was first released in 1932 (and banned in the UK until 1963), Tod Browning's cult horror classic works as an old-fashioned morality play against avarice. Browning shockingly cast a collection of real-life circus performers, who initially welcome the beautiful trapeze artist Cleopatra into their group when she marries midget circus owner, Hans. However, as it becomes clear that Cleopatra is only after his money and is conducting an affair with the strongman, the close-knit clan of 'freaks' seek their revenge.
In a seedy US-Mexican border town, detective Miguel Vargas (Charlton Heston) and his newly wed wife Susie (Janet Leigh) become embroiled in a deadly maelstrom of crime and corruption as Miguel’s investigations into a narcotics ring bring him into conflict with local law-enforcer Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles). The last feature Welles made in Hollywood, this film is a virtuoso foray into film noir, exhibiting his extraordinary sense of cinematic style, vivid characterisation and Shakespearian flair for tragedy, leading many to argue that it rivals ‘Citizen Kane’ as Welles’ masterpiece.

Taking its inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but as humans on land, this delightful animation follows Ben and his little sister Saoirse - the last Sealchild - on a fantastic attempt to return to their home by the sea.
When aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack Earth, using the games as models for their assaults. The US President must call on a team of arcaders to defeat the aliens and save the planet.

Weekly Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below). Look out for the Jeely Jar Screening when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. This season: Moomins on the Riviera (see page 12).
AF Autism Friendly. See page 14. AD Audio Description service for blind or partially sighted people which supplies a spoken description of action not revealed by the film’s dialogue. Pick up your headphones from the Hippodrome staff.

Some film shows can be very busy so we recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment. There are several ways to book tickets for the Hippodrome: In Person at the Hippodrome Box Office open Saturdays 10:15 - 14:30, and also opens 45 minutes before, and closes 15 minutes after the start of each screening. The Hippodrome Café and Licensed Bar opens 45 minutes before each screening and closes at the start of the screening.
