A WARM WELCOME FROM HONORARY CHAIR, INDIA HICKS
My grandmother, a voracious explorer, was known to have slept with an altas under her pillow, and once returned home from Africa with an orphaned lion cub in her arms.
My mother who also travelled extensively sat with Mahatma Gandhi at his prayer meetings during the Indian transition of power (my grandfather was the last Viceroy, hence my name). She met Haile Selassie in Ethiopia and describes the impressive cheetahs chained to the top of his palace steps. She even began life on a journey in Spain, born by mistake in Barcelona. My father, one of the world's most recognised designers also travelled, he found great beauty and inspiration through his journeys.
I myself have been to remote corners of the world, once even being detained in Malawi for showing the backs of my knees, which is forbidden for a woman. I finally made my own home on a tiny, remote island in the tropics.
So, as the 2019 Honorary Chair, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the annual San Francisco Fall Show and its theme of WANDERLUST.
Wanderlust can kindle many things. Navigating the world—whether literally or figuratively—often starts with experiences discovered in one’s youth, which is why I love the mission of Enterprise for Youth. And I know a little bit about youth, I have five kids.
I understand that for 50 years this foundation has engaged, mentored, and empowered San Francisco youth to chart a new course for themselves, through internships, job shadows, and other programs. It is an impressive legacy of good work and one that I hope you might continue to support after your attendance at this year’s show.
So many congratulations to The San Francisco Fall Show for sharing 38 years of beautiful furnishings, decorative objects, art, and design, and to Enterprise for Youth for celebrating half a century of helping young people discover a much brighter future.
Welcome to The 2019 San Francisco Fall Show.
Sincerely,
The 2018 San Francisco Fall Art & Antiques Show

WANDERLUST
By Kay Evans
Wanderlust is a magical word. A transformative state. A true adventure.
When I was a young girl living with my family on a lake in rural Michigan, my father accepted a job that was to change my life forever. As an architectural engineer, he had been tasked with building a brewery just outside Mexico City. It was his biggest project to date, and it uprooted the whole family. With a healthy mix of trepidation and excitement, we packed up all our belongings, boarded a train and crossed the border into a magical new world.
Mexico City in the 1950’s was a highly populated, exotic and cosmopolitan city that coexisted with age-old traditions and pre-Columbian culture. Instantly my mind became sponge-like as I absorbed the sights, smells, and sounds of a very different time and place. It was a thrilling time, and I absolutely loved it! I can vividly recall the knife sharpener’s whistle as he rode his bicycle through our neighborhood, the bread man who balanced a huge round basket on his head, and the varied architecture melding bygone eras into one vibrant, modern city. Living in Mexico during my formative years had a life-long impact on me. Even now, more than 60 years later, it inspires me, pushes me and holds onto my heart like no other place.
That life-changing move to Mexico instilled in me a visceral need to explore—fearlessly and passionately. In a word, it embedded a sense of wanderlust in my soul, which took hold of me and led me to life experiences that I never knew existed.
After returning to the U.S., marrying, raising four children and working as an interior designer, I was keenly aware that something important was being ignored. I had it all, but my passion for travel was left unfulfilled. To remedy that, I summoned the courage to start Kay Evans Decorative Arts Study Tours, and invited friends who shared my passion for art, architecture, and design to join me on jaunts to Europe and Mexico. And there were so many intrepid travelers, that what began as one trip a year, before long became a successful travel business, which gave me great joy and many wonderful friendships over the past 35 years.
“Life is like a book and those who don’t travel only read one page.” Augustine of Hippo
We never know where life will lead us, but every year, at his time, we all gather together to share in the beauty of the past, reveling in its time and place. The San Francisco Fall Show has always held a special place in my heart because it falls at the intersection of my favorite things: decorative arts—the history and artistry—and the people who celebrate it. As the Interim Director of The San Francisco Fall Show, it is my great privilege to welcome you to Wanderlust! As you wander through the Grand Entry Hall of the show, the Designer Vignettes greet you. Four of the world’s most prominent designers, Alessandra Branca, Veere Grenney, Hutton Wilkinson, and the team of Cecilia Sagrera-Hill and George Brazil, took on the task of creating settings based on each of the four points of the compass. They worked with de Gournay to create a stunning wallpaper for the backdrop of their vignettes. Read on to learn about their inspiration and vision.
