Renowned for ‘rebelling’ against the norms of traditional yoga, FORD model turned fitness instructor, Tara Stiles has teamed up with W Hotels to create a partnership where she, and other Strala instructors, will stay at exotic W destinations and teach yoga to hotel guests while enjoying their retreat at the finely-fashion curated luxurious rooms across the globe. Creative Director of AUDREYMAG.CH experienced first-hand the very first Verbier W “ Fit with Tara Stiles” retreat with founder and owner of Strala, Tara Stiles who has unleashed the big secret behind the global movement. FIT with Tara Stiles fitness programme makes you re-think ‘creating space when there is none’. Her calming tone and warm smile guides you on her own rooted-fashionable strand of Strala Yoga rooted in NYC, a journey with emphasis on active, modern yoga, learning the power lies in you, not your teacher. It was only until day 2 at at Marmotte Mountain plateau an evening session when Tara commented, “I have a lot of power” of holding my crane position.
FIT & FABULOUS
Sneak peak of yoga rebel and founder of STRALA, Tara Stiles on a sweet retreat in alpine heaven, W Verbier will leave you “finding space when there is none.” Plus! Yoga swag as a Designer & Partner with Reebok.
I realized that Tara Stiles guidance took me at an inward place where I got incredibly happy. Moving confidently to backbends, bow to cobra in one seamless movement, and even achieving the crane pose for more than 30 seconds. This better-than-good feeling was entirely new. Something I had never felt from endless yoga classes yet, only Strala Yoga was able to achieve through her aspiring guidance. And I was not alone. It was clear this feeling was contagious throughout the group by the changing of energy as the sun set on the beautiful Marmotte Mountain plateau. It is the movement system that ignites freedom. If you feel great after class, that’s because you worked your body and mind in a way that connected you with that feeling. That feeling is you. Tara muses about her dogma-free approach; “Strala Yoga is bringing it back to its original source as a whole-health system, without the exclusivity of private ideologies. When something works, makes people feel great, there’s a tendency for misguided leaders to wrap it up, complicate it a bit, and make people feel like, “You have to go through me to get this great thing.” But yoga isn’t complicated. And the control is all yours.” This Midwest, Illinois born beauty is not only is the founder and owner of Strala, but also the lead on other projects such as being the designer and face of Reebok’s first yoga lifestyle range and has authored two top-selling books, Slim Calm Sexy Yoga and Yoga Cures. She has been profiled by The New York Times, Times of India, The Times (UK), and featured in most major national and
international magazines. Tara supports The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, President Clinton’s initiative to combat childhood obesity, bringing Strala classes to 20,000+ participating schools. Strala’s flagship studio is downtown New York City. And she is Deepak Chopra’s personal yoga instructor. After a two-day experience of Strala, it all made sense. Strala is the ultimate self-empowering toolbox that you need to accomplish anything you desire in your life. Tara says, “ It’s up to you to practice. It’s my mission to show you how to practice in a way that makes you feel better than good.” Thousands of guides are leading Strala classes around the globe and several partner studios are opening in 2014. “Strala is built on the elements, of many eastern traditions of, how do we find comfort in the uncomfortable? How do we find peace in the chaos? “ “Yoga is your own self-reliant system that provides whatever you need to be healthy, as a whole person, which includes all together your mind, body, spirituality, and happiness. All the tools are right there, and you already have them,” Stiles explains. What’s the secret of success according to Tara? “The secret is that there is no secret. Having a clear intention and following what interests me are two things. I direct a lot energy into finding clarity so it doesn’t spread into nonsense. Going after clarity is my quest.” Strala Yoga is perfect for those looking to have fun and get camera-ready, whilst getting fit. Plus the in-room tip cards target specific needs of travellers – think hangover cures, jet lag cures, energy bursts or even limbering up before a night out. Galerie Gmurzynska hosted over 150 shows in its various premises and published over 100 art historical catalogues and catalogue raisonné in close collaboration with experts worldwide. A few of these recent exhibitions include the 2008, “David Smith: Working Surfaces”[5] that travelled to the Lehmbruck Museum; “Zaha Hadid and Suprematism” in 2010, and Robert Indiana “Rare Works from 1959 and Coenties Slip.” Moreover, the gallery has represented the estates of some of the world’s greatest artists. Yves Klein, with an opening of an exhibition of the works of with Swiss art collector Gigi Kracht, in partnership with Galerie Gmurzynska and the artist’s widow, Rotraut Klein-Moquay, will populate the lakeside park of the Baur au lac Hotel with 30 nude figures in the artists patented IKB, or International Klein Blue paint. Gallery’s First Show was the Impressionism and Post-impressionism in 1966, organized by your grandmother, Antonina Gmurzynska. And today, Isabelle you are the 3rd female generation curating contemporary art for Gallery Gmurzynska. How does the responsibility feel in this stage of your life? IB: My mother is still very much in charge, so I do not feel the full responsibility yet. I am able to realize interesting creative projects that are very fulfilling. Why do you think Gallery Gmurzynska has been so successful?
B
IB: The gallery has managed to stay cutting edge over a period of 50 years. Rather then follow trends we have always remained loyal to our program and were at the same time, able to incorporate either new artists or to show different sides of artists that were not seen before.
ehind the tall spotless glass doors of Galerie Gmurzynska, one of the leading galleries for Russian AvantGarde and Classical Modern art for now over forty years, lies the fascinating life of Isabelle Bscher. The third generation female heir to the throne, with galleries in Zurich, Zug, and St. Moritz, runs international art galleries with her award winning mother, Krystyna Gmurzynska. Whether is curating contemporary art, research and publication or even enjoying the thrill of discovery while looking through archives, under her mother’s leadership, runs international art galleries, with interesting and creative projects like the highly acclaimed show, The Haaus Brothers in June. The motherdaughter gallerists share their own maternal history in the arts and complement their sustained passion to support women in the field. Awarded Chevalier des Art et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, Bscher was the first foreigner to receive the merit for special achievements by Michael Shvydkoy, the Russian Minister of Culture, recognizing her “important contribution to scientific research, and for the organization of exhibitions in the field of Russian art of the 20th century.”
Was there a specific moment you knew growing up, you wanted to be in the art world? IB: I guess I never really thought about it. I learned walking at art basel and there was always such a great influx of creative people in our house. And working with your mother, Krystyna Gmurzynska? Has that made your relationship stronger as business owners? IB: Definitely taking joint decisions and we are traveling together a lot. What is the best advice received in the art industry?
The industry has become much bigger, which is a chance and a challenge at the same time. What advice would you offer for young women who are in the art industry that wish to get ahead? IB: Try to see as much art as possible. If you can come back to earth as one of your favourite art pieces, what would it be and why? IB: The birth of venus by Botticelli, who would not want to low out of a shell. What new projects can we expect from you in 2014/2015? IB: A great Louise Nevelson retrospective, and a super exciting exhibition in Miami. Galerie Gmurzynska continues to present unique exhibitions that are both historically well researched and scientifically documented. It also continues to work with leading art historians as well as collaborating with museums on exhibitions and for the enlargement of their permanent collections. Additionally, it currently participates in several art fairs such as Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze Masters in London, Salon in New York and Art Basel, Switzerland. In the past it has taken part in FIAC, Abu Dhabi and PAD New York. For more information about Galerie Gmurzynska and locations visit www.gmurzynska.com
IB: Follow your heart What is an ordinary day like when curating art pieces? Is it instinctive or do stay within a certain style? IB: Well it depends whether one is working on a specific show or a fair. Art is intellectual as well as instinctive. There is no specific style, really. Artworks by different artists are so diverse. How did the collaboration with Haas Brothers begin? IB: I met them through a mutual friend. I had seen their pieces before and was always a big fan. We really hit it off so the development of the show happened in a very organic way. What are the most challenging and most rewarding parts of running an art gallery today? IB: Being able to work with great talent is a real privilege.

old, Quincy, managing her international lifestyle brand, various award-winning social media outlets and sharing lifestyle tips such as her 20-minute Red-Carpet-Ready demonstrating updos, smoky eyes and recipes with top cable advertising agency NCC Media for The Learning Annex. All this at JPM’s former residence, The Morgan Library, and other landmarks in the USA. all while attending to selected appearances such at The Culinary Center at Macys to Million Dollar Listing NY with her friend Luis Ortiz, (whom she gave a lead for a cool 11 million dollar listing on Central Park South) from her good friend Ian Reisner and also will make an appearance with Josh Flagg on Million Dollar Listing LA. “It’s funny because Andy Cohen, executive producer of The Real Housewives franchise asked me: What is it with you and these Million Dollar Listing boys? I said, I have a taste for luxury and luxury has a taste for me! That was one of my silly tag lines one year,” the television star says, laughing.
SONJA MORGAN IS A PHILANTHROPIST. SHE’S A BONA FIDE INTERNATIONAL JET-SET SOCIALITE. HER TALENTS AS A FILM PRODUCER AND ROLE IN THE AMERICAN REALITY TELEVISION SERIES VIEWED IN 138 COUNTRIES HAVE WON THE HEARTS OF MILLIONS OF VIEWERS. AS I SIT WITH HER AT ONE OF HER CLOSEST FAMILY FRIEND’S, CAROL ASSCHER’S VILLA, I QUICKLY LEARN WHY. Her love of Switzerland is no surprise. Sonja travels to Gstaad every President’s Day break in February to ski and re-connect with friends from around the globe. She recently visited her closest friend, the French diamond heiress Carol Asscher and godson for the end of school year celebration at Le Rosey, Swiss International Boarding School in June. “It’s a great meeting point! The people are from everywhere, educated, worldly and it’s very understated and relaxed. For me it’s like Connecticut where I lived outside Manhattan with my ex-husband and my daughter’s father John Adams Morgan. It’s wonderful if you like to garden, keep a beautiful home and relax. There is quick access to skiing, tennis, hunting, and the airport is near,” says Morgan, 50, walking swiftly across the well- manicured gardens of Asscher’s Villa in her Yves Saint Laurent stilettos. I’m sitting in luxury at the Asscher’s Villa (also referred to as Villa Nicolas) while Sonja poses effortlessly at the camera with renowned Suisse Romande architectural-photographer, Carlos Gustavo. I’m thinking how surprisingly humble and gracious she is while directing the next scene (although running in social circles that 24 AUDREY - audreymag.ch
include European royalty and top-notch designers), capturing the scenic views of Mont Blanc behind her. I suppose, this is all part of Sonja Morgan’s demure of being so resilient in life. Despite the shortcomings of change of events from Carol Asscher, maid of honor witnessing (The first one that was cancelled! Another article. Another story. Another time), Sonja at hers, preparing nervously for her heart-warming speech to 750 guests and then again for brunch that hosted a cool 450 guests. A mistral came in and took care of that in St Tropez. Grab your red wine folks! To the end of marriage with ex-husband, descendant of investment banker United States Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, she re-designs her future based on her own rules. “Never let anyone talk you out of your dreams. Anything can be achieved if you set your mind to it and continue to visualize it while working hard toward that goal. It takes time to do things big. Don’t grab the brass ring and short change yourself.” Sonja says firmly with a smile. Juggling many roles and responsibilities never looked so easy with Sonja Morgan. Setting a humble example to her daughter 14-years-
“Over 15 years on the board of The American Friends of Blérancourt which supports the only French American Museum in the world. Chatèau de Blérancourt is a display of history between France and the US. It was Anne Morgan’s Chateau outside Paris and we are helping to rebuild it with the French government and our donors. Anne Morgan was John Pierpont Morgan’s daughter who was part of the women’s suffrage, a supporter of women’s rights to work and my daughter’s great Aunt.” Sonja comments passionately about her philanthropist involvement. A jet–setter with friends in various lavish destinations, this non-nonsense sans-flockmentality, always travels with a lightweight cashmere shawl, “tied to my bag or around my neck. It’s colorful or neutral by choice and always stylish yet useful. You never know with air conditioning and occasional rain showers when you will catch a chill.” No one as diligent as Sonja can be as calm as she appears even in the most unbecoming scenes of the American reality show The Real Housewives of New York City. Sonja says candidly, “Being on Real Housewives of New York City, viewers see our real homes, families, friends, lifestyle and then the cartoon-like edits make it entertaining to watch. During my beauty pageant days I developed my comedic timing since I was more personality than beauty! My modeling and acting experience helped me to improvise, especially for off-the-cuff appearances and my caburlesque singsong skit performances, ” tells AUDREYMAG.CH Creative Director, Laura Romanin.
This Albany-born beauty her firmly adds, “I’m very gracious and philanthropic but if you betray me or put down my opportunities, you are not going to be a part of my future.” “Will you be producing any film appearances in Switzerland?” I asked. “When I lived in Paris, Milan, and Cinecittà as a young model I did have an opportunity to audition in Switzerland, but the pilot wasn’t picked up. I want to film Real Housewives in Geneva or Gstaad at Carol Asscher’s stunning homes. Carol’s homes have the classic bones and architecture that the Swiss are known for. Carol waves her magic wand and translates the interiors and gardens into her vision, which is like no other. She, like me, knows how to visualize and then manifest with her team. We are both very organized. “As a producer who was also working on a screenplay I was having dinner with Charlie Rose, Morton and Linda Janklowe, Barbara Walters, Felix Rohatyn and his wife Elizabeth Fly Rohatyn discussing my work. Morton suggested to write a novel first, that it would be great to get on a reality show to promote it. THEN do the movie from the screenplay based on the book. I mentioned Manhattan Moms had approached me when it was just Jill Zarin and that I turned it down. Barbara was shocked in disbelief, as she believed I would be a great television personality for Manhattan Moms. My advice: Don’t worry what your friends think. Take care of yourself and your daughter. It’s been great!” Sonja says happily as she caresses Bianca, Carol and son Nicolas Asscher’s new puppy. “Do you often struggle revealing too much?” “The Real Housewives of NYC viewer is very sophisticated. The most highly educated of the franchise. We are also air internationally in 138 countries. The viewer’s realize there are edits and that my co-stars are exaggerating my circumstances for drama. I made a commitment to the viewer to be real so I have to pray to the edit
Gods from there on and hope for the best. It’s purely entertainment.” Television star, producer, divorcee, entrepreneurial mother, empowerer –Sonja Morgan has many roles and excels at them all. Sonja muses, “I am very proud of my daughter. I have raised her to have humility. I have strived to set an example for her to build from love and light, not from fear. She will be another visionary like her great aunt Anne Morgan. I’m sure.” “Before being married I ran large teams and was internationally based. During my marriage, the same. I am very independent with a mind of my own but I enjoy working as part of a group with far reach.” “Best advice ever given?” I enquire. Sonja continues, “I am a manifesting generator who loves to work as part of a group that supports me. I’m an opener. John Pierpont Morgan stated no one can be both an opener and closer. My partners are closers. As I develop my international lifestyle brand I am clearly the face of the brand and the visionary with a wide breadth of lifestyle knowledge. The closers cement the deals and button down the finances while I have a knack for putting large talented groups together.” Styled by: Velvet Eyewear (sunglasses), Kay Unger (long dress), Verano High (swimsuit & wrap), Yves Saint Laurent (shoes)

MEAN MOTHERS:
When Parents Are the Ones Who Misbehave By ZANTHE TAYLOR, M.F.A.
We approve in theory of the ideal of inclusiveness, but it’s difficult to impose it on unwilling children, and sometimes we just don’t feel like planning an afternoon with a parent or child we don’t click with. Zanthe Taylor M.F.A., a former dramaturgist and English teacher is exploring the difficulties in managing children’s friendships – maybe we’re not so inclusive after all. How many times in your adult life have you breathed a sigh of relief that your middle or high school days are well behind you? One of the greatest pleasures of adulthood is being able to purge 26 AUDREY - audreymag.ch
the people who’ve proven themselves cruel, destructive, needy or otherwise unworthy of your time. The burdens of becoming an adult are sweetened by the relief of no longer having to negotiate the treacherous thicket of school hierarchies and social strata. The freedom to create our own context of peers and friends, within which we are safe and happy, is surely one reason people are glad to see their school years in the rear-view mirror. Yet I’m learning not to celebrate prematurely, because having school age children throws you right back into the mix, engendering feelings sometimes more painful than the wretched school-era ones you thought you’d exorcised forever. audreymag.ch - AUDREY 27
When I was a new mother in the obligatory “Mommy and Me” classes, it was pure joy to have other parents to talk to. We compared notes, complained about the indignities of parenting, and went googly-eyed over each other’s babies. Inevitably, that first group led to a spin-off meeting at someone’s house, no longer moderated by someone semiofficial. I don’t recall how I ended up in that first group “playdate” – none of those women were my friends before I had a baby – but it was there that the first inklings of mommy cliques began to dawn on me. As our babies gurgled on their blankets, we gossiped and joked and began, inevitably, to discuss subjects beyond our labor stories or nursing concerns. I moved away and left that group – women who’d kindly welcomed me in, based solely on the fact that I’d produced a child – but I wonder sometimes what became of them. I imagine they didn’t all stay friends, because it turns out that the commonality of having a child is ultimately not enough to sustain a true and lasting friendship.
or trust. We approve in theory of the ideal of inclusiveness, but it’s difficult to impose it on unwilling children, and sometimes we just don’t feel like planning an afternoon with a parent or child we don’t click with.
When your children begin school, this becomes abundantly clear all over again. I became a school parent with the idealistic notion that if I were friendly to all, I would be friends with all. Of course, there were some parents – and children – to whom I gravitated, for all the indescribable reasons one prefers some people to others. The parents with similar values, backgrounds, or parenting styles were easier to hang out with. The ones who shared my sense of humor or interests were more fun. But in general, I felt we were one big happy school community, with big group playdates and mommy lunches and annual parent cocktails.
I’m starting to realize these “tween” years (and yes, apparently they start at 9 – another surprise to me) will prove the most stressful yet, in social terms, for both children and parents. Feelings will be wounded on both sides, and with greater awareness come higher stakes. People are flawed; they make mistakes and they hurt each other, accidentally or purposely, all the time. I’m no exception: not long ago I hosted a dinner with limited seating and didn’t invite a close friend. To my horror, she discovered she’d been left out and was hurt and disappointed. Of course I apologized profusely and tried to explain, but I still feel sick about it and deeply regret my decision. And I’m sure I’ve wounded other people over the years without realizing it. But while it’s regrettable when adults hurt adults’ feelings, or children hurt children’s, it’s different when adults mimic, condone or abet the hurtful behavior of their children. I don’t know whether there’s a remedy for this; some schools have policies or guidelines on birthday parties and playdates, but is this genuinely their purview? Perhaps the best case scenario is for parent associations to guide social behavior by laying out expectations and ideals that make sense for their communities. Parenting is fraught enough without our stooping to a schoolyard level ourselves, so let’s utilize our parental authority – while we still have some – and encourage our children to treat each other kindly by modeling some kindness ourselves.
But then children grow and develop their own social dynamics and preferences, adding levels of complication to inter-parent relationships. I find myself now, towards the end of lower school, in that tricky stage where children have definite ideas about who their friends are, but not the independence or wherewithal to manage their own social plans. This puts more pressure than ever on parents to be responsible monitors of their children’s friendships, yet we’ve also developed clear preferences about whom we like

AUDREYMAG.CH LOVE, CAREER AND RELATIONSHIPS
So why do some people settle for a role of being second best?
From the Couch:
Do you know anyone like this?
Rachel believes that she is enjoying a modern, sexually free lifestyle. But secretly, she’s got self-esteem issues. She settles time and again for less; a repetition compulsion. Now, Rachel’s in love with Anthony, a narcissistic guy who makes her feel unwanted in their relationship
Don’t Fall Victim to Repetition Compulsion: Freud gave us the concept of Repetition Compulsion. It’s a brilliant idea which applies to many unhappy relationships. What happens is that you are hurt as a kid, and then go about recreating that injury in adulthood, in the unconscious belief that this time it will turn out better. Do you know someone who suffers from a repetition compulsion with narcissists and cheats? What if you find yourself repeating the same mistake, over and over again, of choosing someone who treats you as second best? It is more common than you think. Here is one woman’s path to the world of charismatic cheats and narcissists. Her name is Rachel, and her story is not unique. Case Example: Rachel, 27, never felt particularly special when she was a kid. Her dad, Gus, was so involved with himself. He loved his work, his friends, and his social scene. Gus was the center. Rachel and her brother, Andy, each felt second best; and Gus was too self preoccupied to pay it much mind. Gus was a typical narcissistic kind of guy. He didn’t even notice that Rachel and Andy were suffering. Gus “knew” that he loved them, and just assumed it was enough. But here are the facts: Gus saw his family fleetingly. He was often late for dinner, rarely came to their sporting events or shows and the kids longed for whatever they could get. Everyone came second: Rachel’s mother, Anna, suffered gracefully—but struggled with depression for many years.
TIED UP
WITH THE
WRONG PERSON? SETTLING FOR LESS IN RELATIONSHIPS By MARK BANSCHICK, M.D. in The Intelligent Divorce
What’s she doing with that boyfriend; he’s so narcissistic? Or, she’s so bad for him.
you get pulled in. When you fall in love, you’re actually falling into a Field of Intimacy. And, no matter how well put together you might be beforehand, things change dramatically once you enter. It can be grand, and awful.
Sure, it’s their choice, but what if your instincts are right?
Bottom of Form
How We Settle For Less—And Can’t See It:
When you are on the outside, intimacy’s fun, but not urgent.
With my Intelligent Divorce Project, I’ve seen more divorce cases than I can count. Friends often come forward and confess that had been worried from the beginning. Now, relieved, the truth comes out. Can we be blind to what is good for us? Unfortunately, yes.
But, then you’re drawn in, first with a small crush and then deeper into intimacy’s matrix, feelings emerge that you may never have known before. You may get jealous when it’s not a general part of your personality. You may find clinginess or rage triggered in ways that feel foreign to you. In intimacy, the rules of many relationships change.
Ever look at someone you know and worry?
Love Through Rose Colored Glasses: Intimacy is a field of sorts—like a magnetic or gravitational field, 34 AUDREY - audreymag.ch
Rachel and Andy did well professionally, they were bright and motivated. Yet, even after Gus’s passing, they continued to compete with each other. That strange feeling of never being good enough could not be shaken.
Rachel’s battle is with Gus, as much as it is with Anthony. She’s entered the Field of Intimacy, and once inside, it’s tough to get out. Imagine a rocket trying to escape the gravitational pull of Earth. She is stuck in an unhappy vortex. Normally, Rachel is in charge. She has sex, does not get too attached and then is left. It may not be happy, but it’s under control. And, for a young woman who never felt adored by her powerful father, it is a solution of sorts. Then, Anthony comes along. Despite herself, Rachel begins to like him—and he triggers all her longings. Anthony will never love her as she wants to be loved, not unlike the way Gus loved his business (or his affairs—we don’t know). Now, Rachel feels second best—and she is. Anthony is killing her slowly with his affection. So, Rachel finally lets someone in, and settles for a lot of long-term chronic pain. Do you have a friend like Rachel? It could be a guy too. Take Away: Rachel deserves to be loved and valued. By clinging to Anthony, the sexual chemistry (without the emotional, spiritual and mental bond) she allows herself to be stripped of her dignity and vitality. At first Rachel believes that sex but no intimacy is acceptable. She is satisfied with it—and feels safe this way. A relationship with a charismatic narcissist is a safe relationship; if that is all you know.
Now, as an adult, Rachel has casual relationships with men that are unsatisfactory, but somehow work. She has taken the role of being a modern, sexually active woman, but down deep settles for less than a real relationship. She finds herself with charismatic guys, who rarely remain faithful, but who are fun and even exhilarating. Rachel experiences little conflict. She enjoys sex and these exciting men, but wants her distance as well. The problem is that as time goes by, Rachel wonders why everyone she hooks up with ends up leaving. Perhaps she’s not the marrying type.
Welcome to the repetition compulsion.
Entering the Field:
When you enter the Field of Intimacy, childhood issues come to the surface. Like Rachel, many people have had parents, like Gus, who were narcissistic or self involved, making them feel second best. And, such people often end up with self absorbed women or men as mates, only to feel insecure and pay the price.
Now, Rachel meets Anthony, a charming, successful guy on the rise. He’s older and has his “act together.” At, least that’s the way Anthony sees it. They date for a while and it’s crazy time. Rachel loves the sex, the fun and Anthony’s confidence. She has entered the Field of Intimacy.
Rachel needs to break away. She needs to shout out “NO” to exploitive relationships. Perhaps in therapy, Rachel will realize she’s worth more—and by doing so, restore a sense of confidence to her life. Because she helped to create this relationship, Rachel also has the power to make changes that will make her happy. Let Gus rest in peace already!
Why not find someone who can really love you?
Three months go by, and Rachel starts to see less of Anthony. He’s away at a conference, or perhaps out with friends. She wants him more. She texts and harangues him—not her style. He gets angry and tells her that she’s over reacting. Rachel backs down. She is locked in.
Break the old pattern. The past need not dictate the future.
Then, the truth comes out. Anthony has been getting some on the side; and old fling—a casual friend. Rachel wants to leave him but can’t. In fact, Anthony offers the idea of real commitment. Although Anthony’s got a bad track record, Rachel’s hooked. Gus may not be around, but the pain of loving someone while feeling second best, is all too familiar.

AUDREYMAG.CH LOVE, CAREER AND RELATIONSHIPS
HOW DO HIGH ACHIEVERS REALLY THINK? Psychologist working in management, leadership and author of You’re Hired has the answer. Beliefs that lead to success. By CARL BEUKE, Ph.D.
AUDREYMAG.CH LOVE, CAREER & RELATIONSHIPS
the commitment of intense effort toward goal achievement, or the relative lack thereof. The core beliefs that differentiate achievement motivated individuals are: SUCCESS IS YOUR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Achievement motivated individuals tend to believe that initiative, effort, and persistence are key determinants of success at demanding tasks. Failure-avoiding individuals are more likely to view success as dependent on available resources and situational constraints (e.g. the task is too hard, or the marker was biased).
HOW TO
SPICE
DEMANDING TASKS ARE OPPORTUNITIES Achievement motivated individuals tend to see demanding tasks where success is uncertain as ‘challenges’ or ‘opportunities’. Failure avoiding individuals are more likely to see them as ‘threats’ that may lead to the embarrassment of failure. An achievement motivated individual might tell a failure avoiding individual, “Anything worthwhile is difficult, so stop acting so surprised”.
UP YOUR RELATIONSHIP AMORANA: sleek, sophisticated, and seam-free silicone. Introducing Lelo Liv 2.
ACHIEVEMENT STRIVING IS ENJOYABLE Achievement motivated individuals associate effort on demanding tasks with dedication, concentration, commitment and involvement. Failure-avoiding individuals categorizes such effort as overloading or stressful. They see perseverance in the face of setbacks and obstacles as slightly compulsive. ACHIEVEMENT STRIVING IS VALUABLE Achievement motivated individuals value hard work in and of itself. Failure-avoiding individuals may mock achievement striving as uncool (e.g. the attitude that the L on learner plates stands for Loser). They may associate achievement striving with lack of a social life or even early death by heart attack. Positive affirmations are a staple of the self-help industry, but there is a problem with standing in front of the mirror every morning and saying something like: “I prosper wherever I turn and I know that I deserve prosperity of all kinds.” “I am my own unique self— special, creative and wonderful.” Or “I will be king of the world in just five days, I just know it.” It makes you feel kinda silly (and sometimes worse). What does research show about how high achievers really think? High achievers are often marked, unsurprisingly, by a strong motive to achieve. Less accomplished individuals are often more motivated to avoid failure. Achievement motivated individuals have a strong desire to accomplish something important, and gain gratification from success in demanding tasks. Consequently, they are willing to expend intense effort over long timespans in the pursuit of their goals. Failure-avoiding individuals are more focused on protecting themselves from the embarrassment and sense of incompetence that can accompany failing at a valued task. Consequently, they are less likely to attempt achievement-oriented tasks, and may give up quickly if success is not readily forthcoming. Where total avoidance of tasks is not possible, failure-avoiding individuals may procrastinate, give less than their best effort, or engage in other self-handicapping behaviour that provides a face-saving excuse in the event of failure (e.g. drinking heavily the night before the morning of an important exam). Of course, achievement motivation versus failure avoidance exist on a continuum, with most of us falling somewhere in the middle. In the research literature, this continuum is described as Relative Motive Strength. An individual’s relative motive strength does not exist in a vacuum, but is associated with an elaborate matrix of beliefs that justify 36 AUDREY - audreymag.ch
SKILLS CAN BE IMPROVED Achievement-motivated individuals have a strong belief that they can improve their performance on demanding tasks with practice, training, coaching, and dedication to learning. Failure-avoiding individuals tend to see skills as fixed and/or dependent on innate talents. PERSISTENCE WORKS Achievement motivated individuals are inclined to believe that continued effort and commitment will overcome initial obstacles or failures. Failure-avoiding individuals are inclined to see initial failure as a sign of things to come. So the achievement motivated individual says, “Don’t assume that you can’t do something until you’ve tried. And I mean really tried, like tried 3000 times, not that you tried three times, and ‘oh I give up.’” And the failure-avoiding individual responds, “You really need to learn when to quit.” The beliefs held by achievement-motivated individuals are not necessarily more logical or objectively correct than the beliefs held by failure-avoiding individuals, certainly not in all situations. However, they are empirically associated with high levels of achievement. Once you understand the modes of achievement motivated versus failure-avoiding thinking, you will recognize them in the way that others talk about their goals, dreams, successes, and setbacks. You will also recognize them in your own thinking, and you can choose to cultivate the beliefs that will support you to achieve your goals. This is more effective than just trying to think positive and relying on the law of attraction to provide you with what you want.

This month wraps up a yearlong cycle of financial and career growth for your sign, where you’ve taken risks and leaps like never before. Enterprising Jupiter has been in Cancer, your work and income zone, since June 25, 2013, pushing Gemini’s far out of their comfort zones and into new terrain. Maybe this brought a new source of income, a prestigious new title or even a return to school, since Jupiter rules higher education. You might have been asked to teach, speak and present about what you know. Perhaps Jupiter’s expansive effect meant you outgrew a job or a style of working. Whatever the case, Jupiter here meant no more “business as usual” for you, Gemini. 44 AUDREY - audreymag.ch
Cancer
The only thing constant in your life has been change, Cancer—and by now, you might have embraced that. On July 16, you’ll wrap up a yearlong visit from expansive Jupiter in Cancer—a game-changing cycle that only occurs every 12 years. Jupiter first sashayed into your sign on June 25, 2013, and since then, your life may have ventured down a whole new course. While sentimental Crabs aren’t really known for taking a cautionto-the-wind approach, off you went on a reinvention tour anyhow. Boundless Jupiter encourages us to take risks, and since it’s been visiting your first house of personal identity, assertiveness and appearance, you haven’t had much time to linger in that famous shell of yours.
Leo
Get ready, Leo, because you’re about to undergo a HUGE life change—and you are gonna love it. On July 16, expansive Jupiter will enter your sign for a full 13 months, making Leos the luckiest sign in the zodiac, and kicking off a fresh decade-plus life cycle. Jupiter only visits Leo every 12 years, and its last tour of your sign was from August 2002-September 2003. Think back to any major life changes or reinventions that occurred then, because you could see themes recurring. Either way, hosting the planet of good fortune and bold risks will bring enticing opportunities that could take your life on a completely new trajectory by next year—if not sooner.
Virgo
Loosen your collar…and your grip. The headline news this month is expansive Jupiter’s annual sign change from Cancer, your group activity house—to Leo, your twelfth house of healing, endings and surrender. On July 16, Jupiter will complete its yearlong cruise through Cancer, which ushered in new friendships, collaborations and even an increased interest in technology/ social media. You’ve become more outgoing than ever, Virgo, widening your circle and opening yourself up to synergistic connections. As the saying goes, you’ve found your tribe.
Libra
July is, well, kind of a big deal for
you, Libra. Two major planets— Jupiter and Mars—will change zodiac signs, and you’ll feel the shift in every way! These planets have been visiting the same assertive, driven zones of your chart for months, making you anything but the passive Libra of astrological lore. It’s been a potent 2014 so far, and you’ve made huge strides toward fulfilling your dreams. Your efforts have taken tangible shape— perhaps in the form of increased income, balanced relationships and a better quality of life overall.
Sagittarius
Cue the Diana Ross, Sagittarius, because you’re coming out! Your ruling planet Jupiter is making its annual zodiac sign change on July 16, moving into fellow fire sign Leo until August 11, 2015. Make way for gregarious good times, globetrotting adventures and a sky’s-the-limit attitude once again! Leo is the ruler of your ninth house—the natural home of Sagittarius, since you’re the zodiac’s ninth sign—meaning the world will have more, more, more of your good humor, wisdom and inspired optimism…those Sagittarian natural resources that seemed to have dried up a bit in the past 12 months, actually.
Capricorn
No person is an island—not even the zodiac’s solitary Mountain Goat. Capricorns are legendary for your lofty treks to the summit, outlasting all the other climbers in your quest for wisdom, accomplishment or simply to finish what you started. Your perseverance is unrivaled, which can make for an accidentally lonely life after a certain point. Others drop out, and you keep forging ahead, undeterred by obstacles, pressing on with a kind of gritty focus tinged by melancholy. But you can’t help it, Capricorn— you have the persist-or-perish spirit in your astrological DNA. (In bumper sticker parlance, your mantra could be “winners never quit, and quitters never win.”)
Aquarius
Change is in the air, Aquarius. This month, expansive Jupiter will switch zodiac signs for the first time in over a year, shifting the focus on your life. Since June 25, 2013, Jupiter has been in Cancer, your sixth house of health, service and
organization. It’s been something of a low-key year for many Aquarians, perhaps one that involved a lot of hard work, systematizing and behind-the-scenes activity. Glamorous? Not so much. But you’ve probably stretched your brain—and your body—into new terrain, perhaps adopting a whole new lifestyle around eating, exercise or what you “feed” your mind. Philosophical, worldly Jupiter has opened your mind to how other cultures live and thrive. And since Jupiter rules publishing and education, you might even have delved into serious study on a rather specific topic, perhaps one related to cooking, natural food, holistic health, medicine, computer science, “green” living or charitable giving. Geek was definitely chic for many Aquarians!
Pisces
Love, sweet love! It’s been a preoccupation for many Pisces for the past 12 months, as expansive Jupiter paid a yearlong visit to Cancer, your fifth house of glamour, passion and creativity. Nothing to complain about there, we imagine, except maybe you’ve been having a little TOO much fun…and veered off track with some professional goals? Well, if anyone knows that there’s more to life than work, work, work it’s a magical Pisces, the sign of fantasy and escape. Since June 25, 2013, your heart has opened to new love, artistic inspiration and possibly even a baby, since the fertile fifth house rules pregnancy.
Scorpio
Get that power suit pressed and ready. On July 16, expansive Jupiter will begin a 13-month trek through Leo, your ambitious and careerdriven tenth house. This cycle only occurs every 12 years (Jupiter last visited Leo from August 2002-September 2003), and it’s a momentous time for you, Scorpio. As Jupiter ascends sky-high in your chart, all that you’ve been working on for the last decade-plus comes together with a brilliant flourish. Get ready for your closeup! The Sun’s move into Leo on July 22 will help kick-start this cycle, and the July 26 Leo new moon will really clinch it. World domination or bust, baby!
