AZCA: PLATFORM FOR FILM & PROTEST MSc2 Complex Projects, Landmarks Studio Supervisors: Afaina de Jong, Hans Nout Location: AZCA, Madrid Date: July 2016
AZCA, the old business district of Madrid, has the potential to be a landmark destination in the city, however its limited programmatic functions and poor spatial planning has created an undesirable space in the city. It is a place of crime & depravity and the city depends on CCTV as a solution to deter dangerous behaviour. In Madrid, film and media have become accessible platforms for youth and marginalized communities as a tool to voice opinion and change during uprise and social demonstration. As a reaction against corporate powers of AZCA and the reliance on security cameras, I proposed the introduction & establishment of film culture on the site of AZCA to bring new functions, social groups and meaning to the area through education, practice and social interventions.

BADHUIS MARINETERREIN MSc3/4 Architectural Engineering, Intecture Studio Supervisors: Roel v/d Pas, Mauro Parravincini & Jan Jongert Location: Marineterrein, Amsterdam Date: July 2017
The Marineterrein, located in the centre of Amsterdam, is currently transitioning from a private naval base into public space. This project tackles two major problems in Amsterdam: (1) social isolation and (2)the desire to create a more circular economy & sustainable infrastructure. The design transforms an existing 1960’s buliding into an urban bathhouse, fueled by biogas created using local food waste. The energy production plant, located in the heart of the building, not only showcases sustainability, but sets the tone for an inclusive bathhouse atmosphere which contrasts today’s exclusive spa culture. The bathhouse takes inspiration from various typologies, transgressing history and culture, and focuses on the user’s connection to the context while creating opportunity for formal & informal amplified social interactions.
