PREPARING FOR SUMMER It’s always best to be prepared for the variable conditions Falls Creek can encounter. A 1600m+ altitude gives Falls Creek a climate that is usually around 10°C cooler than the towns and valleys below. Temperatures range up to the high 20’s but don’t be surprised to occasionally see snow! To make sure you are fully prepared, it’s a good idea to come equipped with: • Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and camera • Sturdy walking shoes for hiking • Bathers and a towel for swimming and water activities • Hydration backpack for any long treks • Both cool and warm clothing • Lightweight raincoat or umbrella for just in case! Essentials aside, bring your own gear or hire when you get here for the following Resort activities:
HIRE AVAILABLE • Mountain Bike and Helmet (tubes and spares available to buy) • Cricket Set • Fishing Rod and Tackle • Tennis Racquets and Balls • Sailboats and Water Recreation (dates in January)
BRING YOUR OWN • Canoe, Kayak, Sailboat and Paddle Board • Exercise gear for Gym or Altitude Training • Picnic Basket or Backpack • Road Bike FALLSCREEK.COM.AU | 7
— GETTING —
to falls Getting to Falls Creek is easy and takes less time than you think. The Victorian High Country is a same-day trip from anywhere in Victoria or New South Wales. If you are in the North East region, it takes less than 2 hours from most locations.
FROM ALBURY Falls Creek is the closest alpine resort to Albury and a great destination for a day trip or “next stop”. The travel time is between 1½ to 2 hours and a spectacular drive through the Kiewa Valley. The best way is to cross the Murray River into Wodonga and then follow the signs to Mt Beauty along the Kiewa Valley Highway.
FROM BRIGHT Falls Creek is only 1¼ hours drive away from this tourist hotspot. The “Tawonga Gap” route is an experience in itself with its incredible lookout over Mt Beauty and Bogong at the top of the climb (make a stop and grab some great photos from the lookout point). Simply head along the Great Alpine Road towards Harrietville/ Mt Hotham and the turnoff to Mt Beauty is five minutes later on your left. Turn right once you finish “the Gap” and you are half-way there.
FROM WANGARATTA & MYRTLEFORD Travel from Wangaratta or Myrtleford is a 2 hours and 1½ hours drive respectively. Drive the Great Alpine Rd through the township of Myrtleford and 5 minutes later you will be at the “Happy Valley Hotel” in Ovens (just after Ray’s Ski Shop). The turnoff to Mt Beauty and Falls Creek is on your left along the Happy Valley Road, also known as the “Rosewhite Gap”.

— LAKESIDE —
adventure Rocky Valley Lake is the High Country’s answer to a beach holiday!
ROCKY VALLEY LAKESIDE Falls Creek is around 10 degrees cooler than the valleys below and it boasts an incredible 250ha alpine lake. This is some of the cleanest water you will find and provides the drinking water for Falls Creek village itself. Rocky Valley Lake Foreshore has grassy banks with picnic tables beside a safe shallow entry that is perfect for paddling. Head East along the Aqueduct Trail or drive 2km past Falls Creek village to find it.
SAILING & WATERSPORTS Exploring Australia’s highest lake is a breeze. Beginning December 28 and operating for 2 weeks into January is Falls Creek’s Mile High Boat Rentals. Rent and sail your own sailboat, paddleboat, paddleboard or kayak and set off to explore the clear blue waters. Rentals are open from 10am to 3pm daily operating out of Rocky Valley Lake Foreshore. Rentals vary in cost and are supported by rescue boat services.
FISHING Try your hand fishing in Rocky Valley Lake. Local brown and rainbow trout are abundant with introduced chinook salmon also to be found. The best fishing is by boat (boats with up to 10hp motors are allowed). Boat ramps exist on either side of the dam wall for launching of boats but you can also catch a bite from the shoreline with the right luck. Fishing rods and lures are available to hire from Visitor Information. Rods cost $10 per day and an additional $10 lure cost is refunded on return of the lure. Fishing licenses can also be purchased online. 20 | SUMMER INSIDER’S GUIDE 2018/19

— ROAD —
cycling
Steep climbs, tight curves and epic views. You haven’t experienced alpine road perfection until you’ve ridden the Bogong Alpine Way. Falls Creek has a huge reputation when it comes to road riding, thanks largely to the resort’s unique dual approach perspective for spectacular climbs from Mount Beauty and Omeo. At 1650m+ there are recognised benefits in training at altitude so it’s an easy task to combine holiday time with that all-important training regime. From Falls Creek the 235km Alpine Loop stretches in each direction and circumnavigates the Alpine National Park. Be wary though – there is a reason they call this Peaks Challenge Falls Creek route Australia’s toughest single-day ride.

heritage trail
No trip to Falls is complete without a visit to Wallace’s Hut - the oldest cattleman’s hut in the National Park. Wallace’s Hut has been standing since 1889 and is a true piece of High Country history. The grounds are perfect for a picnic and nearby Cope Hut (circa 1929) is an easy addition to your visit. You can reach both huts with an easy walk from the car park for a 6km round trip. Access Wallaces Hut via the well signed car park approximately 8km along the Bogong High Plains Rd from the Dam wall. If you are after a longer hike, continue on to the right to reach Cope Hut. You can also park at the Langford’s Gap car park just 2km from the Dam Wall and complete as a return trip. 42 | SUMMER INSIDER’S GUIDE 2018/19

DOWNHILL SPORTS Skiing and snowboarding are the most popular sports at Falls Creek, boasting some of the best “progression perfect” terrain in the country to complement a diverse range of difficulty. The 2.2km Wombats Ramble (Australia’s longest green and night skiing run) is a family favourite for all who visit. The more adventurous can progress on to the cruisey blue runs of Ruined Castle and advanced black terrain of the Summit.
48 | SUMMER INSIDER’S GUIDE 2018/19
Park riders are spoilt for options at Falls. Our 4 terrain parks range from beginner features up to elite jumps and rails. Those wanting more out of their sliding also have access to one of Australia’s most innovative and awarded Snowsports Schools.
CROSS COUNTRY & SNOWSHOEING For something a little different this Winter, go Nordic! Falls Creek features Australia’s best Cross Country skiing terrain. Over 65km of groomed trails are 100% free to access, offering a fun and budget-friendly way for first-timers or elite skiers to experience the snow. Falls Creek has also been busy over the past few years implementing dedicated snowshoe and fat biking trails within the Cross Country ski network. This is a great way to get into the fun and allows you to experience a part of the resort not seen by most visitors.
SNOWPLAY Head to the Village bowl for Snowplay Central with dedicated Snow Tube Park, Toboggan Slope and more - right in the heart of the village. Add in great tours and activities and Falls Creek has something to offer for everybody to enjoy.
FOOD & BEVERAGE Falls Creek is a foodie’s heaven and often referred to as ‘Melbourne in the snow’. There are over 35 dining options in Winter with half of these après ski hotspots at sun-down. Options range from lunchtime snack shops to funky barista cafes and 5 star fine dining. There is also a fully-stocked supermarket for self-catered options. Exploring the village through food and wine is one of our unique points of difference.
ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS Kids Snow-Dragon shows, night skiing sessions, village street party and a night show spectacular are regular highlights each week at Falls Creek. For a unique experience you can take part in a multitude of events and tours throughout the season from helicopter flights to snowmobile tours, back-country skiing and more.
