MENAUHANT: Located on Vineyard Sound, this is the longest beach in Falmouth, and is divided into an east side and a west side by a tidal stream that connects Bournes Pond to Vineyard Sound. Beach sticker required or a one-day fee can be paid to the gate attendant for parking.
OLD SILVER: This beach is by far the most popular on the Cape. The parking lots are divided into two sections: one for residents and one for the public, which is accessed by paying a daily entry fee. Concessions, showers and changing rooms are available. People come from great distances to enjoy Old Silver’s pure white sand. Parking is ample, but come early; the lots fill up fast on hot summer days.
STONY: Located in Woods Hole Village, this MBL-owned beach is staffed by Falmouth lifeguards and parking attendants. It is a wonderful beach, sheltered from the afternoon southwest winds and highly utilized, so arrive early. A Falmouth beach sticker or MBL sticker is required to use the limited parking area.
SURF DRIVE: Located on Surf Drive, a short walk from Falmouth’s Main Street, this beach features public showers and a concession stand. The Ellen T. Mitchell Bathhouse, where residents and nonresidents may purchase Falmouth Beach Parking Stickers, is located here. Surf Drive Beach faces Martha’s Vineyard and is a part of Vineyard Sound. Beach sticker required or a one-day parking fee can be paid at the gate, or a fee paid at Mill Pond parking area further west on Surf Drive.
WOOD NECK: This beach is blessed with a tidal creek containing pure sand and many “critters,” a popular combination for active youngsters. Beach sticker required for parking.

The Shining Sea Bikeway, a 10.7 mile paved pathway dedicated to foot and bicycle traffic, weaves through four of Falmouth’s eight villages from Woods Hole, on Vineyard Sound, through salt marshes, wooded uplands, a cranberry bog and through a historic farmstead into North Falmouth. Enjoy views of “kettlehole” ponds, barrier beaches, salt marshes, cedar swamps, and the open waters of Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. Echoing Falmouth’s rich agricultural heritage, rock walls dot the landscape and seven cattle tunnels cross underneath. This bikeway, whose name honors Falmouth native Katharine Lee Bates, author of the song “America the Beautiful” with its line “… and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea,” is unique as the only bike path that skirts the seashore. CYCLING
LISA JO RUDY PHOTOGRAPHY
Withmore than 3,500 acres of conservation land, Falmouth is an ideal destination for ecologically-minded travelers. Numerous organizations and the Town itself have worked for decades to save these special and important places. Many of our open spaces are accessible to the public for recreation, while others are forever wild - permanently preserved to ensure clean drinking water, to protect sensitive habitat for wildlife and birds, to maintain farm fields for local food production, or to provide important buffer for climate change and sea-level rise. Miles and miles of well-maintained recreational trails traverse a wide variety of terrain: oak and pine forests, rugged moraine, riverfront, coastal and inland ponds, salt marsh, and more.

SUGGESTED HIKES
Long Pond & Falmouth Town Forest
Long Pond, Falmouth’s main source of drinking water, lies at the heart of more than 700 protected acres of forest and swampland. Long Pond is the only pond on the Cape that provides town drinking water. Because it is a reservoir, the pond itself is off-limits to the public, but a 3.5-mile dirt service road encircles the pond and is a terrific path for hikers and mountain bikers. Parking is available at Grews Pond and at the entrance to Goodwill Park on Gifford Street.
Coonamesett Greenway Heritage Trail (CGHT)
This 3-mile trail, completed in 2021, runs through more than 500 acres of permanently protected land along both sides of the Coonamessett River, in a north-south “greenway” of open space. There are several shorter loop options with a nearly 1-mile wheelchair accessible section and two boardwalks that cross the river in the southernmost section. Along the CGHT 11 "waystations" with educational displays provide a narrative of natural and human history throughout the river corridor. The Greenway hosts a range of recently restored natural systems including wetlands, forests and meadows that are home to a diversity of plants and animals. The cold river water supports five species of migratory fish as well as other animals like otters and ospreys.

SITES OF INTEREST
LISA JO RUDY PHOTOGRAPHY
Falmouth’s first European settlers came to “Suckanesset” in the 1660s, buying land from the Native Americans with the consent of the Court of Plymouth Colony. Their first houses, farm lots and common grazing lands were on the neck between Salt and Fresh Ponds. The town was incorporated in 1686. Eight years later, its name was changed to Falmouth in honor of the homeport of Bartholomew Gosnold, who in 1602 may have been the first English explorer of Cape Cod. This established New England coastal community has witnessed the ebb and flow of four centuries. From the Wampanoag tribe (“People of the First Light”) and courageous Yankee whalers, to salty sea captains and Revolutionary War soldiers, every nook and cove of Falmouth is home to a remarkable tale. Stroll past the birthplace of Katharine Lee Bates, the author of “America the Beautiful,” or visit the shore at Surf Drive, where residents endured an attack by the British warship HMS Nimrod in 1814. Stand beside the noble sentinel Nobska Lighthouse, one of America’s most historic and lovely lighthouses, and then explore the former whaling port of Woods Hole.

FALMOUTH’S HISTORY
FALMOUTH
Falmouth Village is the heart of this classic New England town. In the 1600s, the first European residents settled on the neck of land between Siders and Salt Ponds, near the present-day Old Burying Ground. Falmouth is now the second largest town on Cape Cod, with over 33,000 year-round residents. Replete with historic charm, the Village Green - one of seven National Historic Districts in the town - is encircled by engaging and hospitable bed and breakfasts, Falmouth Museums on the Green and the birthplace of Katharine Lee Bates. Vibrant but charming Main Street, just steps away from the Village Green, hosts unique shops, a wide variety of restaurants and delightful boutique art galleries. Falmouth Village is also where you will find bustling Falmouth Harbor, tranquil Beebe Woods and popular Surf Drive Beach. On the east shore of Falmouth Harbor, Great Hill, the highest point of land on Vineyard Sound, offers spectacular ocean vistas and hosts several Carpenter Gothic (gingerbread) cottages built at the turn of the 19th century. This area, known as Falmouth Heights, was a summer resort originally developed by businessmen from Worcester, Massachusetts, in the 1870s, and many of the original houses and pocket parks remain today.

EAST FALMOUTH
Situated between the Coonamessett and Childs Rivers, this thriving village, originally home to the fledgling but short lived mill industry, and a flourishing cranberry industry that still exists, has been the agricultural heartland of Falmouth. It was settled by a large influx of immigrants from Portugal, the Azores and Cape Verde Islands, who, by the 1920s, were the driving force behind making East Falmouth the largest producer of strawberries per acre in the nation. Although most of the farmland has been converted into residential and commercial properties, East Falmouth is still agriculturally focused. The Cape Cod Fairgrounds hosts several events throughout the season, including the County Fair and the Harvest Festival. Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary is well known for its 65 varieties of holly trees and bird-watching opportunities abound there and at Sea Farms Reservation on Green Pond. East Falmouth Village retains over a dozen working farms, five excellent golf courses and the attractions of Menauhant Beach, one of Falmouth’s 10 inviting public beaches.
HATCHVILLE
Named for Jonathan Hatch, a descendant of Falmouth’s original settler, Hatchville, one of Falmouth’s more rural villages, was laid out in 1712 and centered around the old East End Meeting House on Sandwich Road. Once an important dairy center and large farming tract, by 1936 the village that surrounds Coonamessett Pond had become primarily a recreational area and is now largely comprised of residential housing interspersed with cranberry bogs, ponds, small farms, conservation land and woodlands. Coonamessett Farm, an active farm co-op on Hatchville Road, offers activities for the entire family. Many cranberry bogs offer public harvesting in the fall. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the 2,000 plus acre Francis Crane Wildlife Reservation.
NORTH FALMOUTH
Our northernmost village, accessible by the Shining Sea Bikeway, remains one of the most bucolic of Falmouth villages. Enjoy a drive along Old Main Road to see period architecture dating back to the 1730s or follow the footpath through 20 rolling acres of the Roskovics Conservation Area, where soldiers once bivouacked during World War II. A visit to North Falmouth would not be complete without a stop to Old Silver Beach, a Cape Cod best beach, where the sand is soft, the swimming is good and the sunset over Buzzards Bay is extraordinary.
TEATICKET
Ta-Ta-ket, the name given this village by the Wampanoag Indians, translates to “at the main tidal stream.” Where once there was a confluance of freshwater streams flowing through pine groves and farm land, one of Falmouth’s most dynamic commercial districts now exists. Graced by its own village green, Teaticket is a thriving residential area and retail hub which includes antiques, handcrafted furniture, markets, eating establishments and a variety of retail shopping opportunities.

VILLAGE PROFILES VILLAGE PROFILES
WAQUOIT
Waquoit, Falmouth’s smallest village, is also its least developed. Much of Waquoit, together with Washburn Island, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Native American artifacts, including hammer flakes and shell middens, dating back several thousand years, have been discovered on the island. The Waquoit Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, a living laboratory, is part of the Massachusetts State Parks system and its visitor center is open year round, offering educational opportunities to the public to learn about Cape Cod’s ecological resources. Within Waquoit you will find open waters, salt and fresh marshes, barrier beaches, sand dunes, rivers, mixed pine and oak forests, and sand plain grasslands, making this an ideal place to connect with the nature of Cape Cod.
WEST FALMOUTH
West Falmouth, where weathered saltbox cottages and shingle-style summer homes are nestled among groves of oak and pine, contains some of Falmouth’s oldest architecture. West Falmouth’s highlands, some of the highest ground on Cape Cod, provide exceptional seaward vistas across Buzzards Bay. A drive along beautiful West Falmouth Highway or a bike ride on the Shining Sea Bikeway will bring you to Bourne Farm, built in 1775. Acquired by Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries, Inc. in 1980, Bourne Farm is located on over 49 acres of fields, trails, and woodlands that overlook lovely Crocker Pond, and is open to the public for hiking and picnicking. Don’t be fooled by West Falmouth’s serene atmosphere; some of the East Coast’s most electrifying windsurfing can be found off of beautiful Chapoquoit Beach.
WOODS HOLE
At the southern end of the Shining Sea Bikeway, this salty village is bustling with scientists, residents, and visitors. Follow the sea to Woods Hole and take a moment to enjoy the lovely landscape of Spohr Gardens, and then travel on to Nobska Lighthouse, one of Falmouth’s most notable landmarks. As you round Little Harbor, stop and visit the Woods Hole Historical Museum where you’ll see a diorama that depicts an earlier time. In the village, you’ll cross over the Eel Pond drawbridge to find waterfront restaurants, art galleries and distinctive boutique shopping. Visit the oldest aquarium in the nation, where the kids can get hands-on with the touch tanks. Best known for its scientific community, Woods Hole is home to world renowned Marine Biological Laboratory, NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Sea Education Association and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (home to the discovery of the Titanic). Free tours of these institutions are offered seasonally and year round. Returning from Woods Hole to Falmouth, The Knob, a hidden gem on Quissett Harbor, offers a short hike to view a radiant sunset over Buzzards Bay.
A life-sized David Lewis bronze statue of environmentalist and writer Rachel Carson (1907-1964), was dedicated in 2013. Carson, who studied and worked in Woods Hole for many years, wrote Silent Spring, the book that many feel was the beginning of the worldwide environmental movement.

In2009 the Town of Falmouth was designated a “Preserve America Community” by the White House. This significant award, given in perpetuity, distinguishes Falmouth as the only Cape Cod town to be so honored. In 2010 we joined nineteen other communities or neighborhoods in Massachusetts that are “Preserve America” communities or neighborhoods. This award is a tribute to the Town’s historical organizations and individuals who have helped to keep our town’s history preserved and relevant for us and for the future.
Our town is alive with stories of heroes and common folk - whalers and fishermen and farmers - who built their own homes and made their living here in a variety of trades and professions, from salt-making and growing strawberries to processing guano for fertilizer, brick-making and cranberrygrowing. This award is a tribute to those who lived here over the past 350 years, who have lent their time towards the preservation of our past, who have physically toiled on the upkeep and restoration of our historic buildings, who staff historical organizations and committees, who serve as docents and volunteer for special events, who donate to the preservation of our town too many to mention here by name, but who are thanked for their selfless efforts to remember Falmouth roots and Falmouth historical events.
A PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITY
The “Preserve America” program was started in 2003 as a federal effort to encourage and support community efforts for the preservation and enjoyment of America’s priceless cultural and natural heritage. The program is administered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in partnership with other federal agencies. To date a total of 751 cities, counties, tribes and neighborhoods in 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have also received this award, 20 of them in Massachusetts.

FALMOUTH WATER REFILL STATIONS
Refill Reuse Falmouth (RFF) is the Falmouth Water Stewards-led initiative to encourage use of refillable water bottles and to provide clean, refreshing Falmouth water for residents of and visitors to Falmouth. Since 2021, plastic, single-use water bottles in sizes smaller than one gallon cannot be purchased in Falmouth. As we enter summer 2023, there are 11 RFF water bottle refill/drinking fountain stations in Falmouth. By summer 2023, there will be water stations at nine Falmouth beaches next to the shower towers. Major funding for these stations has been provided by the residents of Falmouth through the Community Preservation Fund, the Falmouth Road Race, the Woods Hole scientific institutions and business association, and the Rowan family. www.falmouthwaters.org. FALMOUTH RECYCLING
The Town of Falmouth has created several new recycling programs. Invigorated by the distribution of municipal curbside recycling carts in July ‘22, participation in Falmouth’s residential collection program is growing. A grant from The Recycling Partnership, helped support public education which continues to improve the quality of the materials which residents discard. Our long-running annual Household Hazardous Waste collection was joined in 2023 by a Boat Shrink Wrap collection. Both programs are offered free to residents. In support of Mass DEP’s addition of clothing and textiles to the Waste Ban, Falmouth DPW plans quarterly textile collection events which are also free of charge. These and other municipal recycling opportunities support the Town’s Mandatory Recycling Regulations which became effective on 04.14.23.
