amata.org.uk
WELCOME We are delighted to share AMATA’s autumn season, open to everyone and packed full of dance, theatre, live music and laughter. New this season is a comedy night on the first Wednesday of each month, featuring some of the best Stand Ups on the national touring circuit. In December, we are pleased to present AMATA’s first seasonal theatrical treat for all the family, Luca Silvestrini’s The Little Prince, and after a summer of refurbishment work, our café bar has been transformed to create a comfortable and welcoming environment. Please do come along at any time during opening hours (page 23) to relax, refuel and unwind. We hope you will join us for some of the exciting performance opportunities and events on offer at AMATA this autumn.

SEETA PATEL AND LINA LIMOSANI
NOT TODAY’S YESTERDAY 19:30
An unmissable treat Martin Thomasson – The British Theatre Guide
*****This is outstanding, innovative, must-see dance. Peter Burdon – The Advertiser
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. George Orwell
*****Not Today’s Yesterday is a poised and thoughtful work and a spectacular performance from a powerful dancer. Frodo Allan – Broadway Baby
Not Today’s Yesterday is an international collaboration between UK award-winning Bharatanatyam (Classical Indian dance) artist Seeta Patel and Australian choreographer Lina Limosani. This work blends techniques from Bharatanatyam, contemporary dance and theatre to create a poetic narrative that has the beauty and disquiet of a Grimm’s fairytale. It is a one-woman show which subversively co-opts whitewashing against itself. Once upon a time… in a faraway land… it happened… did not happen… could have happened. Not Today’s Yesterday will be followed by a post-show discussion.

PROTO-TYPE THEATER
THE AUDIT (OR ICELAND, A MODERN MYTH) 19:30 There’s a shadow coming, across the sea. Long and terrifying. The vultures are circling, the wolves are howling… how can we weather this storm? The global economy is a mess. The crash has landed, the tide’s swept out, and it’s taken our hope with it. There’s less in our pockets and more to be spent. The rich have got richer, the middle’s squeezed tight, and the poor are being dragged ever downwards.
****The kind of theatre that seeps into the sub-conscious. The List ****This is coolly reasoned theatre, produced by Proto-type Theater with stylish aplomb. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian proto-type.org Tickets: £15/£12 Age guidance: 14+

LE KOV PLUS ADWAITH 19:30 What if your mother tongue is an ancient language of a land that you’ve never lived in, whose native speakers have only recently broken 200 years’ silence? WAYNE PARSONS DANCE VESTIGE AND MEETING 19:30 Catch this ‘compelling and accomplished’ evening of dance-theatre from a choreographer with a ‘distinctive narrative voice’ – The Guardian**** With a rapidly-growing reputation for creating emotionally-arresting dance-theatre works, Wayne Parsons Dance presents a sensitive and rousing double bill exploring the theme of memory, featuring spell-binding choreography, new writing, specially-commissioned music and stage design. The touching duet, Meeting, sees a couple navigate the retelling of a shared memory.
Vestige, a collaboration with writer Ankur Bahl, is based on the life of a fictional celebrity named Livia. Fan-girl archivist Suki, needy portrait artist Cath and jealous biographer and ex-husband Killian all share their differing accounts of Livia as she weaves her way through their memories. RICHARD CHAPPELL DANCE AT THE END WE BEGIN 19:30 Following its creation on Studio Wayne McGregor’s 2017 FreeSpace Program and first UK Tour, Richard Chappell Dance presents At the end we begin. The company’s dynamic, compelling and first full length work uses T.S. Eliot’s classic series Four Quartets as a point of departure by representing each poem with four arresting and emotionally fuelled quartets of dance, named after each poem.
At the end we begin questions how time’s circular nature affects our understanding of ourselves and inhabits the derelict and sometimes turbulent landscape of Eliot’s poetry. It takes four young individuals from a place of being lost to a state of empowerment
and acceptance where they have found their own voice by journeying through Eliot’s text. Whilst combining Chappell’s distinguishable blend of classical ballet, martial arts, improvisation and contact work with three other highly skilled performers, At the end we begin dives into each performer’s unique and diverse skills, such as Vogueing and Breaking. With a rich palette of qualities, it welcomes audiences into a tenacious and committed world of adrenaline, full-bodied chaos, personal sensitivity and delicate patience. Tickets: £14/£11

THE BALLET OF THE NATIONS 19:30 Actor Billy Zane narrates this 50-minute arthouse film in which war is imagined as a diabolical dance choreographed by Satan and Ballet Master Death. Impermanence present their first short-feature film with a directorial debut from Roseanna Anderson and Joshua Ben-Tovim. The film was inspired by the pacifist satire, The Ballet of the Nations, written by Vernon Lee in 1915 and illustrated by Maxwell Armfield as a response to the outbreak of war. Impermanence’s film incorporates original dialogue inspired by Lee’s text, among intricate and stylised dance pieces, with production design by Pam Tait and an original soundtrack by composer Robert Bentall.

Join the Little Prince in this live stage show as he journeys through the baffling world of grown-ups, meeting a king who reigns over nothing, a businessman obsessively counting stars and a vain man craving admiration! Along the way he encounters a lone pilot stranded in the desert and together they discover the power of friendship and the complexity of love.

CHEAP DATE DANCE COMPANY DIRTY WORDS 19:30 A music and dance duet with dancer, Grace Clayton (Grace Clayton Dance, Cheap Date) and multi-instrumentalist, Seamus Carey (Kneehigh, Wildworks). A crash landing of self-expression, communication, action and reaction through live music, dance, theatre, and digital media. This visual monologue questions the physical, verbal, facial, tonal, nuanced way we talk to the world. An exploration and debate of music and movement that rebounds, vibrates, clashes, reacts and challenges each other in the same space, just as our words do. Exploring the filth, fun and aftertaste of our everyday interactions. The work is a 60-minute humorous, intellectual, visceral experience that leaves you contemplating your own individual modes and forms of communication. The work, through the use of subtitles and sign language, is accessible to a deaf and hard of hearing audience.
Another life affirming performance – amazing. Blown away again by the talent of Cheap Date Dance... effortlessly brilliant! Audience Member (Little Women Big Balls) Captures something essential and honest. Roy Campbell-Moore, National Dance Company Wales (How We lost it) Tickets: £14/£11 Age guidance: 14+
