JAYDE ADAMS

RICH WILSON

An uncut gem; a force of nature; dangerous and unafraid; the future of British comedy. Multi award-winning comedian and proud Bristolian Jayde Adams is all of these things, according to the national press. It’s safe to say that when Dawn French says: “Jayde Adams is the 3rd funniest woman in the world. Fact”, she might just be on to something.

Rich Wilson is one of the country’s finest comedians and has been “winning over audiences in seconds” at all the major UK comedy clubs (Jongleurs, The Comedy Store, The Comedy Cafe, Big Night Out) with his stylish delivery, commanding presence and impeccable timing. He has performed sell out shows at major international comedy festivals including Perth Fringe, Melbourne International, Edinburgh Fringe and New Zealand Comedy Festival and is regarded as one of the UK’s best MC’s by comedians such as Sarah Millican and Frank Skinner.

Winner of the 2014 Funny Women Award, nominee for Best Newcomer at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Comedy Awards, and on the BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017, Jayde is an in-demand live act who has recently sold out runs at the Soho Theatre and performed at Latitude’s Comedy Arena. 2019 has seen Jayde host a podcast with Scott Mills for BBC Sounds in the lead up to Eurovision, and take her popular monthly night, the cult live musical show, Amusical to Comedy Central.

TEMPER THEATRE COMPANY NIGHTSHIFTER 19:30

Flo and Kai are family, siblings raised together who find themselves living in very different worlds… Inspired by conversations with junior nurses and paramedics, Nightshifter reflects on our epic capacity to care. Combining Temper Theatre’s signature fluid muscular movement, fragmented imagery and soul-shaking soundscapes, Nightshifter explores love, loneliness and responsibility. A physical explosion of interconnected images inspired by our endless juggle of priorities. Do we have time to care? And if so, should we start with ourselves or others? 6

AMATA | AUTUMN 2019

Meanwhile outside our echo chamber, a global crisis rages. How far can your compassion reach?

*****A fresh-faced frantic assembly, Temper Theatre’s concise, emotive brilliance is a masterpiece of physical theatre. Primal in its honesty and hugely topical in its subject matter. The Upcoming ****Temper Theatre, directed by Finn Morrell, really come into their own... This vehement, but cogently delivered production doesn’t back down. RVR PRESENTS THE YEARBOOK 19:30

Ronnie Cook and Friends are Blues/Soul/RnB/ Funk inspired artists, with influences from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and BB King. Since his debut album, ‘Good Grief’, Ronnie Cook and Friends has gone on to develop his sound into a real modern classic. Plum Jr. draws influence from shoe-gaze, punk, and indie music. Plum Jr.’s honest lyrics about young love and mental illness really hit home, and are brought to life by the band with exciting fills and riffs throughout. Idle Eyes & the Restless Nights are a four piece blending blues, rock, indie and soul. With jaw dropping hooks and funky beats, their wellreceived debut EP, ‘Not the Same’, has been seamlessly translated into their live shows. Charlotte Lloyd-Butler is an indie songstress drawing inspiration from favourites such as Lucy Rose and Bon Iver. Charlotte combines sensitive yet powerful vocals with intricate guitar lines. J. Scarle’s music is unreservedly powerful. Using transcendent harmonies and melancholic lyrics, he paints a musical story. Developing from ‘A Musical Diary,’ J. Scarle hones delicate ambience that will stay in your memory long after you hear him. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets: £5

BEYOND FACE 2,000 STORIES 19:30

Directed by Alix Harris Now I Can Speak.

‘I’m bringing everything I ever knew – everything good, strong, kind and powerful. I bring it all with me into every situation. […] So I will take the Scandinavian story of the Little Princess, I will take the story of Heidi in the Alpine Mountains, I will take the story of O-Lan in Pearl S. Buck’s book The Good Earth, I will take them all. I take them, and I know them, and I am them. So when I walk into a room, people know that somebody has come in – they just don’t know it’s 2,000 people!’ Maya Angelou during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, December 2000. This is a show about stories; the ones that have stayed with us, the ones we have forgotten and the ones we may have been forced to hear. Who decides on the selection of stories we are told and are we really listening anyway? Following the sold-out success of Mixed Grill, Beyond Face make their AMATA performance debut. MICHAEL LEGGE DAN ANTOPOLSKI PLUS MC TOM GLOVER 20:00 DOORS FOR 20:30 START MICHAEL LEGGE is a unique comic talent and master of improvisation. Having recently hosted the backroom chat for MTV’s European Music Award to 53 million viewers worldwide, he is fast becoming one of the most sought-after acts and hosts on the comedy circuit. As a performer he is sharp and cutting-edge whilst being cheeky, lively and charming. Michael had a sell-out run in Edinburgh in 2017 with his musical entertainment Jerk, followed by a run at the Soho Theatre. His writing for MTV’s website, The Osbournes won him a BIMA award and BAFTA nomination.

BERTRAND LESCA AND NASI VOUTSAS ONE 19:30

ONE is the third and final part of a trilogy of work exploring power dynamics and political themes on a micro, human level. Following Eurohouse and the Total Theatre Award-winning Palmyra, Bert and Nasi return to AMATA with ONE. It’s about polarisation, it’s about the left and the right. It’s also about two people who need to fix an awful, toxic relationship. ONE is a painful conversation, either late at night or the early morning, in which neither side can bring themselves to just leave the room. Bertrand Lesca and Nasi Voutsas’s work is stripped back to say the least: the shows shouldn’t be interesting, but the way they play with humour, brutality, and their ability to turn the mood of a room on a sixpence has resonated with audiences across the world.

They are, to my mind, one of the most exciting prospects in British theatre. Matt Trueman, Whatsonstage ****This wonderfully playful, intimate and ultimately moving show… Constantly pits idealism against self-interest and pragmatism. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian ****startlingly effective: jagged, knockabout fun with a decidedly sharp edge. A new filthy, funny and intimate solo show, triangulating the sex and love letters of long dead artists, contemporary sexts and a meditation on the construction of the queer female body. How do we write ourselves and for whom?

The show although simple in concept, packs a punch emotively and politically... Rachel’s ability to hold the space allowed the audience to move past being audibly shocked, embarrassed and amused, to an empathetic and engaged connection to the material. Christie Hill, BAC.
