WELCOME We’re delighted to share with you our Spring/Summer season at AMATA, which is packed with the best dance, theatre, music and our first ever comedy night! Forthcoming highlights include theatrical innovators the Wardrobe Ensemble with their hit show, Education, Education, Education, a ‘love letter to the schools of the 90s’; a haunting new dance theatre production, Point of Echoes, by internationally-acclaimed choreographer, Ben Wright (BGroup); Minima’s ‘electrifying’ live soundtrack for the classic 1925 Phantom of the Opera silent film; and a hilarious evening in the company of stand-up comedians, Lou Sanders and Gabby Best. The exceptionally talented National Youth Dance Company return with Sharon Eyal’s specially commissioned piece ‘Used to Be Blonde’, and a talk by renowned choreographer Rosemary Lee marks the first of a programme of public talks and events organised by CAST as part of Groundwork, hosted by AMATA. The final public showcase of creative and original performance work by talented students graduating from our theatre, dance and music degree courses takes place throughout May, and we are pleased to offer an exciting and varied selection of summer schools, including the well-established Freefall Dance Summer Intensive course and the Falmouth Yamaha Jazz Summer School, with a line of up of fantastic tutors for all levels of ability. Following its successful launch in 2017, the Music and Dance Summer School led by choreographer, Grace Clayton and composer, Patrick Bailey, provides young dancers and musicians with the exciting opportunity to work together in collaboration. We very much hope you will join us at AMATA to experience some of the fantastic opportunities we have to offer this season.

MTEM PRODUCTIONS THE STORY OF: LOVE 19:30 The Story of: Love is a gig centered around storytelling: Lily Lyons, FARE and Charlotte Lloyd-Butler tell the stories that inspired the songs that they have written.
‘Wholly lo-fi and stripped back, a production decision that fits the honesty of FARE’s lyrics and also compliments the soundscape of birds and seaside wonderfully.’
‘The purity in the singing and song-writing style of Lily Lyons as performed on her song After Dark is exhilarating.’

MINIMA
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 19:30 The classic 1925 silent film Phantom of the Opera, with a live contemporary musical accompaniment by the quartet Minima. Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the ‘Man of a Thousand Faces’, dominates this classic adaptation of the 1910 novel. His ghastly make-up and outrageous performance made this one of the great classics of American silent film. Fast-moving and exciting, this original film version of Phantom is a dramatic tale of obsession, kidnap, murder and revenge, beautifully tinted throughout and featuring an impressive sequence of early Technicolor as the Phantom appears at a Masked Ball. Minima have specialised in live accompaniment to screenings of silent films since 2006. Their electrifying new score for The Phantom of the Opera captures the horror of the story, but also finds pathos, romance and humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello strike up a thrilling relationship with the film, following the Phantom down into his subterranean nightmare world.
‘Minima’s spine-tingling music clung to each twist of the movie... spellbinding accompaniment.’ The Guardian minimamusic.co.uk Tickets: £10 Age cert: PG

BGROUP
POINT OF ECHOES 19:30 An intimate new dance theatre work, Point of Echoes is a haunting tale of love, death and monsters, blending the tones of a Wes Anderson movie with the eerie dread of The Twilight Zone. The year is 1978. Isolated from the mainland, Eric Valentine and Bernard Humphries have been stationed at Echo Point lighthouse, somewhere off the coast of England. The unlikely strangers have just begun to lay down foundations for this odd working relationship when the uncanny occurs.
Renowned international choreographer Ben Wright and musician and writer Stuart Warwick collaborate to bring you BGroup’s most intimate and theatrical production to date. Commissioned by the Rural Touring Dance Initiative, Warwick Arts Centre and Dance East.
‘Giddy, pensive, vulnerable, uncomfortable, sensual..... mysterious yet playfully alive to the moment.’ The Times benwright.info Tickets: £14/£12 concessions Age recommendation: 14+

LOST DOG
PARADISE LOST (LIES UNOPENED BESIDE ME) 19:30 A one man staging of Milton’s epic Paradise Lost and not like whatever came into your head when you read the first bit of that sentence. Combining theatre, comedy and movement this is a journey through the story of the creation of everything condensed into 75 minutes.
A show for anyone who has created anything (child, garden, paper aeroplane) and then watched it spiral out of control.
‘A heavenly new take on Milton.’ Evening Standard The comedy is divine, but the images of love and loss are achingly human. The Independent lostdogdance.co.uk Tickets: £12/£10
A show which brings you the highlights of this well-known but often forgotten story beginning with Lucifer’s rebellion and ending with Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the garden of Eden. A single man plays all the characters, creates all the scenes and, despite his best efforts, falls a little short of perfection.

RESIDENCY PROGRAMME The residency programme at AMATA enables performing arts practitioners to access studio space for noncurricular activity, generally outside of University term times. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but we advise applying at least six months in advance. Because there are actual and opportunity costs to AMATA associated with this offer, we need to ensure that all residencies benefit our students in some way. With this in mind, Artists-in-Residence are expected to contribute to AMATA through, for example; a gratis performance for the public programme in lieu of the value of the studio time (this may be at a later date, where we would contribute towards expenses but no fee will be payable) and/or a gratis sharing of work-in-progress, or participation in workshops or teaching sessions. amata.org.uk/opportunities
