SPRING SEASON 2019

amata.org.uk

WELCOME We are excited to announce AMATA’s spring season, open to everyone and packed full of dance, theatre, live music and laughter. This spring, together with SW1 Productions, we welcome back Falmouth music alumni, IDER, whose debut album is set for release in 2019. Also returning to AMATA by popular demand are one of the southwest’s most exciting emerging theatre companies, Scratchworks, ‘underground pop hero’ Bellatrix, and the muchlauded Falmouth band Tinnedfruit. Two companies share their debut works; TRIBE// dance company’s Still I Rise is a ‘call to arms’ by an all-female cast, and James McDermott’s Rubber Ring is a semi-autobiographical hilarious coming of age comedy drama. AMATA’s monthly comedy night goes from strength to strength with spring line-ups featuring some of the UK’s most talented and award-winning comedians including Lou Sanders, Brett Goldstein and Annie McGrath – not to be missed. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to see some of these world-class artists at AMATA this season.

CHEAP DATE DANCE COMPANY DIRTY WORDS 19:30

A music and dance duet with dancer, Grace Murdoch (Grace Murdoch Dance, Cheap Date) and multi-instrumentalist, Seamas Carey (Kneehigh, Wildworks). A crash landing of self-expression, communication, action and reaction through live music, dance, theatre, and digital media. This visual monologue questions the physical, verbal, facial, tonal, nuanced way we talk to the world. An exploration and debate of music and movement that rebounds, vibrates, clashes, reacts and challenges each other in the same space, just as our words do. Exploring the filth, fun and aftertaste of our everyday interactions. The work is a 60-minute humorous, intellectual, visceral experience that leaves you contemplating your own individual modes and forms of communication. The work, through the use of subtitles and sign language, is accessible to a deaf and hard of hearing audience. Running time: 60 minutes (no interval) Age guidance: 14+

Another life affirming performance - amazing. Blown away again by the talent of Cheap Date Dance… effortlessly brilliant! Audience Member (Little Women Big Balls) Captures something essential and honest. TRIBE// STILL I RISE 19.30

Still I Rise, the debut work by TRIBE// is a call to arms, a defiant and uplifting work danced by a female cast. Raw and emotive dance is combined with Victoria Fox’s powerful yet articulate movement style. The work channels the resilient, unapologetic nature of Maya Angelou’s poem. It’s unflinching, relentless hope for the human spirit binds this visceral dance work together. From pounding beats to stirring classical arias the music drives the dancers onwards. Falling down, gathering up… we rise. ‘I have a desire to see female dancers really owning the stage, to take the space. Raw and physical, subtle yet extreme, I want to see women enable each other and represent the full range of their strengths, virtuosic to vulnerable, the realities in which we live and the journey we continue.’ Victoria Fox

A contemporary dance company that packs some punch. culturised.com Packed with both physical invention and emotional intensity. Very beautiful and cinematic ...like in Handmaids Tale – you've got to hold on to the last fragment of hope, that there's a way out, a hope of change. TREMOUGH FOLLIES PRESENT URINETOWN ‘What kind of a musical is this?!’ Tremough Follies are proud to present Urinetown (Yoor’in toun). Yes, that really is the name of the show. Urinetown is a three time Tony Award-winning satirical musical comedy that premiered in 2001 and has since received 5-star reviews at London’s Apollo Theatre. If you’ve ever been caught changeless at a public loo then this show is for you. America, the not too distant future. A 20-year drought has led to a terrible water

shortage nationwide, with a governmentenforced ban on private toilets. Citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amongst the throngs, a hero plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! With music performed by a live orchestra, this is an irreverently humorous satire where no one is safe. Modern, outrageous and totally wicked – be prepared to laugh until your bladder bursts! Book and lyrics: Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis. Music:Mark Hollmann. Tickets: £12/£8 ‘We can’t have you peeing for free...’ Age guidance: 12+
