WELCOME We are excited to announce AMATA’s spring season, open to everyone and packed full of dance, theatre, live music and laughter. This spring, together with SW1 Productions, we welcome back Falmouth music alumni, IDER, whose debut album is set for release in 2019. Also returning to AMATA by popular demand are one of the southwest’s most exciting emerging theatre companies, Scratchworks, ‘underground pop hero’ Bellatrix, and the muchlauded Falmouth band Tinnedfruit. Two companies share their debut works; TRIBE// dance company’s Still I Rise is a ‘call to arms’ by an all-female cast, and James McDermott’s Rubber Ring is a semi-autobiographical hilarious coming of age comedy drama. AMATA’s monthly comedy night goes from strength to strength with spring line-ups featuring some of the UK’s most talented and award-winning comedians including Lou Sanders, Brett Goldstein and Annie McGrath – not to be missed. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to see some of these world-class artists at AMATA this season.

A music and dance duet with dancer, Grace Murdoch (Grace Murdoch Dance, Cheap Date) and multi-instrumentalist, Seamas Carey (Kneehigh, Wildworks). A crash landing of self-expression, communication, action and reaction through live music, dance, theatre, and digital media. This visual monologue questions the physical, verbal, facial, tonal, nuanced way we talk to the world. An exploration and debate of music and movement that rebounds, vibrates, clashes, reacts and challenges each other in the same space, just as our words do. Exploring the filth, fun and aftertaste of our everyday interactions. The work is a 60-minute humorous, intellectual, visceral experience that leaves you contemplating your own individual modes and forms of communication. LOU SANDERS An acclaimed stand-up, Lou Sanders’ latest Edinburgh show Shame Pig was a huge hit, receiving rave reviews, completely selling out and earning her the Comedian’s Choice Award for Best Show. Lou’s recent TV appearances include 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), The Russell Howard Hour (Sky 1), Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled (DAVE), Karl Pilkington’s sitcom Sick of It (Sky One), and a live stand-up set on Comic Relief (BBC1). She supported Katherine Ryan on her latest West End run.

ANNIE MCGRATH Deadpan comic Annie McGrath is back with some dry jokes and silly anecdotes. She is a 2018 Funny Women Awards finalist and has appeared on BBC3, BBC Radio 4 Extra, Channel 4, ITV2 and Sky Sports. Annie has performed comedy at various clubs and festivals around the UK, including the Edinburgh Fringe, Camden Fringe, Latitude Festival, Green Man, and Machynlleth Comedy Festival.

BRETT GOLDSTEIN Brett Goldstein is an award-winning British actor/comedian who is in his twelfth year of stand up and has done four Edinburgh shows. With an ever increasing body of TV and film work, Brett has co-starred as ‘Scott’ in Drifters (E4),‘Tom’ in Derek (C4/Netflix), had regular roles in forthcoming comedy series Hoff The Record (Dave) and starred in the lead role of ‘Bob’ in the award-winning feature film, Superbob (which he also co-wrote). He had a lead role in the feature Adult Life Skills (with Jodie Whittaker) and co-wrote the Catherine Tate Nan specials (BBC1).

Jimmy is sixteen, sexually confused and stuck in Sheringham. He’s screwed. Well he’s not actually: that’s the problem... When pop star Morrissey comes to London, Jimmy flees to the city to try and find his hero and himself. Rubber Ring is a comedy drama about learning to love yourself and your roots. Rubber Ring opened at The Pleasance Islington prior to a two year national tour and is currently being adapted for TV with Hat Trick Productions (Outnumbered, Father Ted.)
Rubber Ring is the debut play by Norfolk playwright James McDermott. ‘Bellatrix is the charismatic, unpredictable, genre bending maverick you didn’t know you needed in your life’, wrote DUMMY when the quirky young artist released her debut EP Real Stuffed Owls mid-2017. Citing influences from Bjork to Sun Ra, Bellatrix has delivered a blisteringly inventive body of work that won her serious acclaim from tastemaker artists and critics alike, along with airplay on BBC R6MUSIC, BBC R1, SOHO RADIO and AMAZING RADIO. A professional musician by trade, earning her living as a double bassist, Bellatrix’s interest lies heavily in live performance. In August
2017 she received funding from Arts Council England to create her live show. The result was a highly engaging, multi-sensory performance and string of sell-out headline shows with storming feedback from the music industry and fans alike. Her second EP, ‘Bad Dancing’ was funded by the prestigious PRSF Women Make Music fund and released in 2018.

Renowned space scientist Maggie Hill recently launched a career-defining mission to find habitable planets. It didn't go well. Shortly afterwards, her girlfriend stopped speaking to her. She's going to have to address both of these catastrophes. Maggie is giving a lecture about her career, to inspire young women to work in science. She's also attending her first therapy session, in which she's at pains to state how her bipolar disorder isn't relevant to the conversation. The spaces overlap as we begin to build a picture of Maggie's greatest achievements and biggest regrets. LIGHTS! PLANETS! PROPELLER DANCE Propeller is an advanced-level dance training programme for 11-16 year olds interested in a career in dance. Taught by highly trained professional dancers and choreographers in five locations across Cornwall including AMATA.
