BA(HONS) CREATIVE ADVERTISING We’re very pleased to say that Creative Advertising at Falmouth is well regarded by, and has strong connections with the advertising industry. Course content is constantly updated to keep pace with rapidly changing working practices and as such we nurture an informal studio culture that reflects agency working practice.

YOUR NEXT CREATIVE DEPT Many of our graduates are now senior creatives and Creative Directors and we keep in very close touch with them. And what nice people they are. Here’s what some of them have said about us:

“The facilities are top notch. The staff are great and you get different inductions to teach you how to use software and programmes. You have freedom to play around and do whatever you like. If you need help you can just drop in or email. There’s plenty of support.” Leong Darren Abriel Creative Director, BBH China “On the course, not only did we learn about the techniques and thought processes behind creating a great campaign, we also gained valuable knowledge about the industry and were equipped with everything we needed to get a job.” Kieran Child & Steve Atkinson Creative Directors, Table 19

Our students get the chance to work on live briefs set by advertising agencies, many of which lead to work placements. We know that having industry connections is very important and we encourage and support networking by hosting alumni and student social events, going on agency visits and we have a stream of visiting creatives giving talks and critiquing students’ work. As a result, most of our students will have undertaken work placements and made their own industry contacts by the time they leave. For our students, just like it is for working creatives, no two days are ever the same. Every brief challenges them to come up with impactful ideas and innovative ways to get their messages out there. Originality and creativity are rewarded, it’s what it’s all about. Sound like fun? Then BA(Hons) Creative Advertising at Falmouth could be the course for you.

“Falmouth’s advertising course was a great stepping-stone into an industry that I, and many others, had not had vast amounts of exposure to before. The syllabus introduced me to lots of different aspects of the industry and showed me that it was the right career path for me.” Rob Pritchard Jones Senior Creative, Wunderman UK

OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS Here’s some agencies where our friends work. Thanks for the visits and live briefs guys! Droga 5, Ogilvy, JWT, VCCP, AMVBBDO, Iris, AMVPulse, Collective London, BBH, The Hub, Table19, Mother, Saatchi & Saatchi, TBWA, Adam & Eve, Lowe, Epic, Dentsu, Grey, M7C, Crispin Porter, 180 Amsterdam, Bates, CHI Asia, St Lukes, Kamarama, Wunderman, MrPresident, Fold7, Elvis, RAPP, WhoWotWhy.

show time This year we had a record haul of seven, yes seven, again seven, D&AD New Blood winners across Falmouth’s BA and MA advertising courses. As if you didn’t know, winning a D&AD award is the highest accolade in advertising and our students were in competition with hundreds of other students worldwide.

WINWINWIN It is an extraordinary result and our students worked very, very hard to win. Award winning is important for all advertising creatives. Work is judged, and awards are given out by other creatives and it is very difficult to win, but if you do it is a sure-fire way of progressing your career rapidly. It is also a great leveller, senior creatives are in competition with newbies and junior creatives can become senior creatives almost overnight. One of the big attractions of being a creative in advertising is there is no corporate ladder to climb, no years of service necessary, no one cares how old or young you are. One minute you’ve just left uni, the next you could be famous. Check out the winning work at www.D&AD.com/NewBlood

CREATIVE TEAM: Meghan Shuttlewood & Jack Morgan WEBSITE: www.megandjack.com HELLO: Meghan likes comic books. Jack’s vegan. It works.

CREATIVE TEAM: Alex Hawker & Maisie Lawrence WEBSITE: www.maisieandalex.com HELLO: A partnership is like a jar of gherkins: it gets better with age. And it’s now, after a three-year long training montage, that Maisie and Alex are ready to be unleashed on the world. To create work that’s amusing, interesting, or just worth looking at for more than a second.

CREATIVE: Dave Warfield WEBSITE: www.allinadaveswork.co.uk HELLO: Take a look at me... Take a look at me because they say everything in life is trial and error. Take a look at me because I failed my driving test three times and my A levels weren’t much better. Take a look at me because I was rejected by every University bar just the one. Take a look at me because despite that, I still went away and managed to get sh*t done.

CREATIVE: Joe Youk See WEBSITE: www.josephyouksee.com HELLO: I’m Joe, a copywriter who loves all things sentimental. When I started University I set myself the little personal mission to capture my 3 years in Polaroids. I’m now leaving Falmouth with quite a few Polaroids, a degree, an addiction to detail and a couple of extra stone in weight.

CREATIVE TEAM: Jonas Pollard & Jessica Delaney-Ellwood WEBSITE: www.jonasandjess.wixsite.com/book HELLO: When Jess told Jonas her favourite music artist was Drake, he was confused as he didn’t realise Sir Francis Drake was a musician. The team use this contrast to their advantage when thinking creatively, which results in seriously diverse ads.

CREATIVE: Bethan Harris Brown WEBSITE: www.bethanharrisbrown.co.uk HELLO: Recently I found a dead rat in a bucket full of water-breathing maggots (with tails) and fished it out thinking it was straw. Despite the initial trauma, I washed away the maggots and even buried the rat (gone too soon). I like to think I’m the kind of girl who looks alien maggots in their non-existent faces and smiles.

D&AD WINNER: Bethan Category Winner: Nationwide/Shelter ‘Rewrite the Housing Issue’

CREATIVE TEAM: Ryan Wheeler & Ryan Mansfield WEBSITE: www.ryansquaredcreative.wordpress.com HELLO: ‘RyanSquared Because two Ryans are better than one’

CREATIVE: Rosemary Furlong WEBSITE: www.iamrosie.com HELLO: ‘Don’t get me wrong, but to be honest, at the end of the day, when all’s said and done… d’you know what I mean?’ Gavin & Stacey Season 1 Episode 5. NEWSPAPER TITLE TAKEOVER

My entire time on the degree has been centred around a mutual love of quoting Gavin & Stacey, predicting the canteen menu, and counting how many times friends have turned Vegetarian. All invaluable advertising skills.

CREATIVE: Harriet Whitaker WEBSITE: www.hrwhitakercreative.wixsite.com/ creative HELLO: I’m a northern ginger lass who was born and bred in Yorkshire surrounded by brews, sheep and flatcaps. I view myself as a sponge, constantly soaking up the world around me, dripping with creativity, passion and flair. I observe advertising as a drug. Once you have a brilliant idea, you just want to create more and so the ongoing addiction begins. I see agencies as huge jigsaw puzzles and I am the missing piece which is yet to fit and make them complete.

CREATIVE TEAM: Max Simmance & Jake Smith WEBSITE: www.maxjake.com HELLO: We are a driven, determined and dynamic duo of creative thinkers. We’re also best mates, and are most likely to be found cliff jumping around the Cornish coast or travelling around Europe to sample the local beer. Jake always thinks his work can be better and won’t rest until it is the best it can possibly be; a photoshop wiz and lay-out perfectionist, his art direction only ever improves. Max’s wit, combined with his sensibility, pervades through all his copywriting, culminating in sharp, punchy headlines and thought-provoking copy.

CREATIVE TEAM: Gabby Cork & Aaron Leong WEBSITE: www.gabbyaaron.com HELLO: Love the squirm clients give when they’re uncertain about that weird idea you’ve pitched? Well, so do we. Finding unique insights and crafting ideas that demand attention is what really gets us off. For something different, diverse and may be a little odd, Gabby & Aaron are the brains to pick.

CREATIVE TEAM: Janelle Joyce & Warisara Burns WEBSITE: www.wearequr.wixsite.com/wearequr HELLO: Curious and offbeat. A creative team with two heads and one mind. Art director Warisara hates the sounds of forks scratching on plates and never uses pillows when she sleeps, and copywriter Janelle at gunpoint would choose ‘This Must Be the Place’ by Talking Heads as the most romantic song ever written.

CREATIVE TEAM: Niall Katuska & Aaron Daniel WEBSITE: www.nk-ad.co.uk HELLO: We’ve known each other since 2000. Niall loves filmmaking, Aaron loves making music. One of us has travelled Europe practising karate, one of us was recently held at gunpoint by the French Police. Curious as to which one? Let’s sit down for a chat, we’ll get the beers. We’ve just finished a 6 week internship at Ogilvy. Now we’ve got a taste, we’re ready to see what’s next.

CREATIVE TEAM: Sarah Kelly & Daisy Buckley WEBSITE: www.sarahanddaisy.wixsite.com/portfolio HELLO: Sarah has a key eye for detail and is almost unstoppable when it comes to the Adobe suite; no layer is left unturned. Daisy is more likely to be seen with pen in had, both her wit and sensibility provide striking yet thought provoking copy.

CREATIVE: Aidan McCollum WEBSITE: www.aidanmccollum.com HELLO: Aidan has been telling stories and chatting shit for years now and he would very much like to get paid for it rather than going back to working at children’s parties. He will put in all the dedication and discipline necessary to not have to see the inside of an Olaf (from ‘Frozen’) suit again while a five year old kicks him in the knees proclaiming he is not the real Olaf. He has not let it go.

CREATIVE TEAM: Kelsey Hibberd & Sophie Goodall WEBSITE: www.kelseyandsophie.com HELLO: We’re a team of the filmmaker and the strategist; the teacher and the volunteer; the focused and the scatterbrain. We work well together, and even more so when we have shared goals with an agency. We want to work with people like us; the creative, the weird and the wonderful.

CREATIVE: Melissa Sharpe WEBSITE: www.melissasharpe.co.uk HELLO: I’m an alien. I’ve been one for almost half my life which is great because I believe that the more we see of the world, the more we learn. This also means that my ideas tend to be other worldly. And because I have lived in a lot of different places, my communication skills are totally adaptable.

D&AD WINNER: Melissa & Lauren Category Winner: Digital/McKinsey ‘Digitise a Financial Revolution’

CREATIVE TEAM: Daniel Scott & Lauren Ashton WEBSITE: www.ashtonscott.co HELLO: Fun and outgoing 20-something male/female partnership seeking an arrangement with older experienced professional. CDs welcome. We’re both very open-minded and willing to experiment in the creative department. Looking for brief encounters; especially if those briefs call for experiential or digital work. Contact us for details - pictures available upon request.

CREATIVE: Lily Lyth WEBSITE: www.lilylythcopy.wordpress.com HELLO: Single female copywriter on the market. “Everybody’s talking about it” - David Ogilvy.

CREATIVE: Rich Pugh WEBSITE: www.richpugh1.wixsite.com/portfolio HELLO: “All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level.” - Bill Bernbach

CREATIVE: Jennie Carter WEBSITE: www.carterjennifer15.wixsite.com/website HELLO: As a creative person and I love a good challenge and I feel most comfortable outside of my comfort zone. I’m always looking to test my skills by spend any free time making everything I can; whether it’s clay models, digital designs or animation.

D&AD WINNER: Jennie & Charlie Category Winner: Adidas ‘Play a Good Game’

CREATIVE: Jake Lewis WEBSITE: www.jakesideas.me HELLO: I was the kid the parents lost, they weren’t bad parents but I never followed the path, if it’s new and exciting I’ll go for it, that’s who I am, that’s how I work.

CREATIVE TEAM: Dani Gray & Rinnah Chua Xian Qi WEBSITE: http://www.imxprs.com/free/rinnah/danirinnah-portfolio HELLO: For us, ideas just seem to show up like Jehovah’s Witnesses at your door. Born and bred halfway around the globe from one another, yet our dichotomy goes hand in hand. Together, we can visualise our whacky ideas whereas others would just run for the hills.

LIFE BY THE BEACH

• It’s a lot, lot cheaper going out in Falmouth than in London, or most other places actually.

Being a student is not all about work work work. And it’s not all about getting a qualification or getting a job. No, we’re not mad. And yes, we think it’s a very good thing to go to uni. To shamelessly use a well-worn cliché, it’s all about the journey.

• Sometimes it feels like everyone in Falmouth is a student, especially if you find yourself in Weatherspoons or Beerwolf (59 other pubs and bars are available).

We think it’s just as important to get your degree as to discover, enjoy, celebrate and hopefully make friends for life. The experience you’ll get at a good University can shape your future, even your personality, in ways you can’t imagine and the experience of living and studying in Falmouth is quite unique.

• Monday nights and Thursday nights are Big Nights Out for students.

We could wax on about this but someone in advertising said a long, long, time ago: ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’.

• There is quite a vibrant music scene. • It’s difficult to find a street parking space and it drives everyone crazy. • There’s festivals galore in town throughout the year, some are very good, some are okay, some are not. • Strangers passing by say “hello” which takes getting used to. • Summers can be truly glorious but don’t bank on it - in fact don’t ever think you know what the weather is going to do at any given moment.

Final year celebrations begin spot Suki, the course pet dog.

Is there a better ways to while away an evening with a few friends… probably not.

That’s fresh air, that is.

Course visit to the big smoke.

Good music. Stage presence needs some work chaps.

Winning feels good.

Crouching students, hidden garden.

The how-many-people-can-wefit-in a-bedroom game.

Up to your neck in sand when you should be up to your neck with work.

60’s Disco Party or gangster reunion.

De-stress time. With shoes.

Yes! It’s a beard!

• You’ll come to depend on ‘Tesco Express’ and ‘the Spar’ like you never imagined you could. • There’s an unfeasibly large number of creative people milling about. • There are 3 good beaches within a few minutes walk from our campus, which is nice. And people actually do have BBQs on the beach after work which is also nice. • Lots of people go surfing though paddle boarding is quite the in-thing at the moment. • Falmouth is the home of the legendary ‘Club International’ or Club i. • It’s quite good eating out with several decent restaurants and of course there are PASTIES. For the less adventurous gourmand there’s KFC, McDonald’s, Dominoes, Pizza Express or Subway but there’s no Nando’s (yet). • Most locals really hate the gulls and unfortunately you’ll probably discover why. • If you can sail you’ll be in demand as crew and go sailing for free. Ditto rowing. • You’ll come to love the romance of coastal path walks. • It feels like a long, long way away from any air pollution or noise or traffic jams. • Some students never leave. In a good way.

JOIN US We’re looking for original thinkers, people who enjoy being creative. We’re not looking for people with a portfolio full of ads (for various reasons which we won’t go into here). It’s good if you are interested in contemporary culture including music; film; art; design; photography; social media; TV; news stories and the general zeitgeist. And advertising of course. In other words, interested in just about everything.

doing it for real

It helps a lot if you like writing or art or design. Or film making and photography. Or maybe psychology. We’re not looking for craft skills, you can learn those as you progress on the course if needs be. By now you may have realised that there is an incredible mix of people studying on our course. Funnily enough, that perfectly matches creative departments in advertising agencies. The diversity of students on our course make for a creatively stimulating environment. And we think it makes it more fun. Take the first step and check out falmouth.ac.uk/advertising to find out more.

CAMPAIGN GOLD & SILVER ‘Cannes’ is an annual, global awards bash for the advertising industry. Agencies from around the world enter their work and winning a ‘Cannes Lion’ is one of the industry’s highest accolades. One of our graduates won a Gold Lion and a Silver Lion with his 2017 Christmas TV campaign for the BBC. We take no credit of course, but we are incredibly proud of Amar Marwaha. And it’s a great campaign. If you were in the UK over Christmas 2017 you would have seen the

charming animation of the dancing girl that captured the hearts and minds of the British public. Amar (and his partner Arvid Harnqvist) started working together at AMVBBDO and straightaway became very successful, producing award winning work for various clients and have just kept going. So far, they’ve won over 20 awards, and that doesn’t happen easily. Of course, we now bother Amar with requests to revisit Falmouth and talk to our students about his journey and to give advice. Who better than Amar? He’s someone who’s studied on our course. Check out Amar and Arvid’s work here: www.amarandarvid.com

BRIGHT FUTURES Ben Fallows and Matt Deacon teamed up together in their first year here in Falmouth and never looked back. Sometimes two people just ‘click’ and they became a proper creative team well before they graduated. They learnt by their mistakes and weren’t afraid to start again if they didn’t think that what they’d done was good enough. Through networking, persistence and a good portfolio, they were offered work placements well before they graduated and shortly after

landing their first full time job at TBWA they created Lidl’s multi-channel Christmas Campaign which straightaway became a hit with the great British public and lauded by all in advertising. They were also nominated as the ‘faces to watch’ by Campaign Magazine. How right Campaign was. They are now senior creatives at The&Partnership and still producing award winning work. And it seems like only yesterday that they were fresh faced whipper snappers here in Falmouth. (You’ve still got fresh faces chaps.)
