“BRIEF SYNOPSIS”
AS A DESIGNER I HAVE A COMMERCIAL RETAIL INTEREST PARTICULARLY IN GRAPHIC DESIGN. MY PRIMARY INTEREST IS THE USE OF USING AND CREATING A VISUAL LANGUAGE ESPECIALLY WITHIN INTERIOR DESIGN FOR PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES OR COUNTRIES TO ALL UNDERSTAND.
THIS CONCEPT PROMTES THE RETAIL BRAND “OFF-WHITE” IN THE HEART OF CENTRAL LONDON AND ONE OF THE BUSIEST SHOPPING STREETS IN THE WORLD … REGENT STREET. OFF WHITE AS A BRAND USES INTERANTIOAL SIGNAGE TO PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCTS AND USES DIAGONAL HAZARD LINES AS THEIR LOGO. WITH THESE HAZARD LINES AND SYMBOLS CAME IDEA OF MAKING THE STORE A CONSTUCTION SITE, WHERE THE CONSUMER WILL NEVER ACTUALLY TOUCH THE ORGINAL BUILDING STRUCTURE, BUT INSTEAD WITH THE HEP OF SCAFFOLING AND TIMBRE PLANKS TO GET AROUND THE BUILDING.
I ENJOY CREATING DESIGN SOLUTIONS FORMING A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. CREATING A UNIQUE SPACE USING SHAREABLE, ENHANCED OR PLAYABLE DESIGN SOLUTIONS TO ENJOY THE ENVIRONMENT. I AIM TO UNDERSTAND AND USE THE BRANDS ETHOS TO UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS TO EXPERIENCE A RETAIL STORE.
“KEY PROBLEMS TO OVERCOME” THE ONLY ISSUE THROUGHOUT MY PROJECT WAS ACTUALLY THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL PLANS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. THEY DID NOT MATCH UP WITH EACH OTHER.
THE IDEA IS A STORE THAT NO ONLY DO YOU WALK ON THE ORGINAL FLOORING OR TOUCH THE ORGINAL WALLS BUT ALSO IT HAS NO WRITTEN TEXT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WHERE SUCH AS THE TILLS (WHICH THERE ARE NONE BUILT IN), THE CHANGING ROOMS OR THE CIRCULATION OF THE STORE. INSTEAD SIGNS AND PATHWAYS ARE CREATED THROUGH THE BUILDING GUIDING THE CUSTOMER THROUGH THE SPACE. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS FOR PEOPLE FROM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, WITH DIFFERENT LANGUAGES OR CULTURES TO UNDERSTAND THE SPACE, ESPECIALLLY AS THIS STREET HAS AN INTERNATIONAL MARKET.

“WHY REGENT STREET?” REGENT STREET IS ONE OF THE BUISEST SHOPPING STREETS IN THE WORLD WITH 7.5 MILLION PEOPLE VISITNG EACH YEAR. IT IS A FAMOUS TOURIST ATTRACTION IN LONDON FOR INTERENATIONAL TOURISTS, WHO WANT TO SPEND MONEY. REGENENT STREET IS KNOWN FOR BEING THE ‘UPPER MARKET’ LOCATION RATHER OXFORD STREET. OXFORD STREET IS KNOWN FOR CHEAPER BRANDS SUCH AS PRIMARK, H&M OR GAP. INSTEAD REGENT STREET HAS HIGHER END BRANDS SUCH AS BURBERRY, LONGCHAMP OR GUESS (LOCATED NEXT TO MY BUILDING).
“WHY OFF WHITE ON REGENT STREET?” AS A BRAND OFF WHITE HAS A VERY HIGH END RETAIL PRICE FOR THE CAUSALWARE ATTIRE. FOR EXAMPLE A BASIC BLACK TSHIRT IS A MERE £165 WITH SOME GRAPHICS BRANDING ON IT. WITH THE REGENT STREET ADDRESS, THIS AREA NOT ONLY HAS A HIGH FOOTFALL BUT ALSO DUE TO THE HIGHT END NIEGHBOUR STORES THEIR TARGET AUDIENCE ARE MORE THAN LIKEY TO ALSO BE SHOPPING AT THE NEIGHBOURS, BURBERRY STORE FOR EXAMPLE.

“ORIGINAL SITE PLANS”
BASEMENT
THIS 158 REGENT STREET SITE, IS IN CURRENT USE BY THE RETAIL BRAND ANTHROPOLOGY. IT IS CURRENTLY A STORE BASED ON THREE FLOORS AND THE ENTRANCE IS CURRENTLY EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM REGENT STREET. IT HAS A LIFT THROUGH TO ALL FLOORS, AND CENTRAL STAIRCASES IN THE CENTRE OF THE VOID WITH TWO SHAFTS. WITH THE BASEMENT HAVING
THE LARGEST FLOOR SIZE, MOST OF IT IS CORDONED OFF FOR STORAGE OR STAFF. AS A GRADE II LISTED BUILDING THERE ARE CERTIN FEATURES THAT CANNOT BE TOUCHED. ONLY THE ENTRANCE FEATURES SUCH AS THE MOSAIC WEDGWOOD FLOORING, THE DOORS AND METAL WINDOW FRAME AND THE WINDOWS ARE ALL LISTED.
FOR THE PURPOSE OF MY TEMPORARY POPUP, THE ONLY MAJOR WORKS WOULD BE TO TAKE OUT THE CENTRE SIX STAIRCASES AND REPLACING THEM WITH TEMPORARY KEY CLAMP STAIRS THAT ARE MOVEABLE. THE REST OF THE BUILDING WILL BE KEPT THE SAME.

THE CENTRAL VOID SPACE ALSO HAS TWO LARGE SKY LIGHTS, CREATING NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WHICH IS A MAIN FEATURE, BUT ALSO CREATES A BEAUTIFUL NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. CORNICE ON THE FIRST FLOOR RECENTLY RESTORED GIVES THE SPACE SOME HISTORICAL VALUE. THE RESIDENCY IS LOCATED CENTRALLY ON REGENT STREET BETWEEN OXFORD CIRCUS AND PICCADILLY CIRCUS.
“KEY ISSUES” MAIN ENTERANCE CANNOT BE TOUCHED DUE TO BEING LISTED. THE MOSAIC TILING AND STEEL DOOR AND WINDOW FRAME HAS TO STAY PUT.

“OFF-WHITE THE BRAND” OFF-WHITE IS AN ITALIAN STREETWEAR AND LUXURY FASHION LABEL FOUNDED BY CREATIVE DESIGNER VIRGIL ABLOH IN 2012. THE BRAND SPECIALISES IN SEASON TO SEASON MEN’S AND WOMEN’S LIFESTYLE AND STREETWEAR CLOTHING, BUT ALSO CREATES BAGS AND FURNATURE. OFF WHITE COMBINES 90’S INSPIRED NEW YORK STREET STYLES WITH TAILORED COLLECTION PEICES. WITH ITS HIGH END MARKET THIS BRAND HAS THE COMPETITION OF THE LIKES OF: SUPREME, YEEZY, VETEMENTS OR COMME des GARÇONS.
OFF-WHITE IS AN EXAMPLE ON HOW EFFECTIVE IMAGERY AND LOGOS CAN BE TO ESTABLISH A BRAND IDENTITY. OFF-WHITE HAS TWO VERY ICONIC SYMBOLS THAT REPRESENT THE BRAND WHICH MAKE IT SO MEMORABLE. FIRST THE DIAGONAL LINES, MAINLY PLACED ON SLEEVES OF T-SHIRTS AND ALSO THE FOUR ARROW SIGN NORMALLY ON THE BACK OF A GARMENT OR ON A BAG.
“WHAT DOES THE DIAGONAL STRIPE MEAN?” VIRGIL WANTED AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE. HE REALISED HAZARD SYMBOLS WERE A WAY TO PROMOTE THE BRAND WITHOUT USING ANY ADVERTISING. THE IDEA IS SO YOU SEE THE STRIPES AND ASSOCIATE IT WITH THE BRAND OFF-WHITE. ICONIC SYMBOLS SUCH AS: ZEBRA CROSSINGS, TRAFFIC SIGNS, PARKING SPACES ARE ALL RECOGNISED BUT NEVER USED UNTIL OFF-WHITE. NOT ONLY DO THEY HAVE PARTICULAR SIGNS OR SYMBOLS BUT THEY USE SIMPLE CITATIONS TO DESCIBE WHAT THE OBJECT IS AND USE LIMITED COLOUR PALETTE CREATING THEIR TRADE MARK.
“WHO IS THE USER?” OFF-WHITE IS A BRAND THAT ITS STREETWEAR APPEALS TO A HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL YOUNG CONSUMER BASE. TRADITIONAL HIGH-END BRANDS HAVE A MUCH GREATER RELEVANCE IN THE EYES OF MILLENNIALS AND GENERATION Z SHOPPERS, WHICH IS THEIR TARGET AUDIENCE. GENERATION Z ARE NOT CONCERNED ON WHAT CAR OR HOUSE THEY HAVE - INSTEAD THEY WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHAT LABEL THEY ARE WEARING (EASILY RECOGNISED BY THE SIGNS AND SYMBOLS THEY USE). ALSO THESE TWO GENERATIONS LIKE TO FOLLOW BRANDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, SUCH AS INSTAGRAM. OFF-WHITE
WAS THE FIRST HIGH END BRAND TO DOCUMENT ITS DESIGN DRAWINGS TO FINAL OUTCOMES. THIS CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONSUMER AND BRAND CREATES A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP, PERSUADING THEM TO PURCHASE ITEMS. THE CUSTOMERS ABLOH WANTS ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SIMILAR BACKGROUNDS TO HIM. THE AIM TO MAKE SKATEBOARD-AND-GRAFFITI URBAN STYLE MORE MAINSTREAM. THE TARGET AUDIENCE IS “THE GIRL WHO WEARS CÉLINE, THE GUY WHO WEARS SUPREME.” (BOTH HIGH END BRANDS)

“HOW IS THE CONCEPT EXPLORATORY??” “NO TEXT” NO WRITTEN FORM OF COMMUNICATION WILL BE USED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO EALK THROUGH THE BUILDING OR HOW TO PAY FOR THE PRODUCTS.
“UNIQUE EXPERIENCE” NO RETAIL STORE LIKE THIS IS SO STRIPPED BACK OR ‘UNFINISHED’. WITH THE WHOLE IDEA OF IT BEING A CONSTRUCTION SITE, THE MINUTE YOU QUEUE OUTSIDE ON KINGLY STREET IS THE MOMENT YOU BECOME A MEMBER OF STAFF ON THE SITE. WITH A HIGH GUARD ON THE DOOR WITH A CHECKLIST, YOU ENTER INTO A CONTAINER WHICH IS THE SITE OFFICE TO CLARITY PERSONAL DETAILS FOR AN ID CARD. YOU ARE THEN BRIEF BY ACTORS AND RETAIL STAFF DRESSED AS CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN THE BUILDING. ALL CUSTOMERS HAVE TO FOLLOW BUILDING REGULATIONS SO HARD HATS, HIGH VIS JACKETS ARE PUT ON DURING THE BRIEFING. AFTER THIS THEY ENTER THE RETAIL BUILDING SITE.
“NEVER TOUCH THE ORIGINAL BUILDING” WITH THE IDEA OF USING SCAFFOLDING STRUCTURE AND PLANKS OF TIMBRE PLACES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING, THE USER WILL NEVER ACTUALLY TOUCH THE ORIGINAL BUILDING WHEN SHOPPING.
“PRODUCTS PART OF THE STRUCTURE” THE PRODUCTS WILL NOT HAVE MODERN DISPLAY UNITS. INSEAD THE ACTUAL STRUCTURE OF THE WALKWAYS, FLOORING AND CEILING WILL BE USED TO CREATE THE DISPLAY UNITS TO CREATE SPACE TO HANG THE CLOTHING, ACCESSORIES OR SHOES.

DISPLAYED IN NEW YORK, IT WAS A FITTING LOCATION GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF SCAFFOLDING THAT POPULATES THE CITY, IRONICALLY JUST LIKE MY SITE LOCATION LONDON. THE EXHIBIT DEMONSTRATED HOW THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS ARE FANTASTIC FOR INSTALLATIONS, POSITIONING IT AS A TOOL FOR BOTH RADICAL ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. IT CREATES AWARENESS OF ITS PRACTICAL AND ADAPTABLE USES, WHICH IS WHY I DECIDED TO USE SCAFFOLDING AS MY DISPLAY UNITS BUT ALSO MY PATHWAYS, WALKWAYS AND LIGHTING STRUCTURE. THE EXHIBITION YOU COULD READ FROM OUTSIDE AT NIGHT, DUE TO THE ANGLES OF THE REFLECTIVE MATERIAL, WHICH IS AN ELEMENT OF THE SCAFFOLDING BEING USED IN AN UNUSAL WAY WHICH IS WHAT I LIKE ... THIS IDEA OF UNSUAL WAYS OF SEEING OR DOING THINGS. A BIT LIKE MY RETAIL STORE WHERE YOU HAVE A TIME LIMIT FOR EACH LEVEL AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.

“SWISS PASSPORTS IN A LONDON GALLERY FOR A 24-HOUR PERFORMANCE” ARTIST TOM SACHS OPENED A TEMPORARY SWISS PASSPORT OFFICE IN LONDON, WHICH REMAINED OPEN FOR 24 HOURS. DURING THAT TIME, VISITORS WERE ISSUED WITH A SWISS PASSPORT AT A COST OF €20 – NO BRITISH £ ACCEPTED – AS PART OF AN INSTALLATION ADDRESSING INTERNATIONAL CONCERNS: FROM BREXIT TO TRUMP. IT WAS THE IDEA OF HAVING A THEATRICAL ROLE IN THE POP FOR EXAMPLE - TO OBTAIN A PASSPORT, VISITORS AT THE GALLERY FIRST
HAD TO FILL IN A FORM WITH THEIR PERSONAL DETAILS AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS TO A “THE PASSPORT OFFICIAL”. IT WAS AS IF IT WAS A REAL EMBASSY: TAKING PHOTOS, HAND-TYPING HIS/HER NAME ONTO A SERIAL-NUMBERED TOM SACHS STUDIO PASSPORT. THIS IS EACTLY WHAT I WANT FOR MY CONSTRUCTION SITE EXPERIENCE. ACTORS DRESSING LIKE BUILDERS, SHOUTING, DOING MANUAL LABOUR OR BRIEFING THE CUSTOMERS ETC.
“MASTER CONCEPT MOOD BOARD” THESE ARE THE MAIN TRIGGERS FOR MY PROJECT CREATING A CONSTRUCTION SITE FOR A RETAIL SPACE.

AS MY RETAIL STORE IS A CONSTRUCTION SITE - THE MAIN IDEA WAS TO USE SCAFFOLDING. THIS MEANT MY DISPLAY UNITS AND WALKWAYS WOULD BE USING SCAFFOLDING SO I CAME UP WITH A SYSTEM THAT WOULD USE 1600mm x 800mm SCAFFOLDING TOWER AND A 800mm x800mm SCAFFOLDING TOWER.

THIS CREATED FLEXABILTY AND LESS RIGID PATHWAYS IN HOW TO WORM AROUND THE FLOORS. TO ADD ANOTHER LEVEL TO COMPLEXITY THE BASMENT HAD THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SCAFFOLDING TOWERS AND GRADUALLY BECAME MORE AND MORE CROWED THE FURTHER UP THE BUILDING YOU GOT TO CREATE MORE CHAOS.

THE SCAFFOLDING STRUCTURE. EACH TOWER HAD A POLE AT EVERY 800mm IN HEIGHT PERFECT TO DISPLAY CLOTHING AND BAGS AT 1600mm.

“CONCEPT DIAGRAM 2” “NEVER TOUCH THE ORIGINAL BUILDING” AS THIS RETAIL STORE IS A TEMORARY POPUP (6 MONTHS A YEAR) THE AMOUNT OF STRUCTURAL WORK I WANTED AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. 1. TO SAVE COSTS 2. THERE IS NO POINT IF OFF-WHITE ARE NOT STAYING FOR LONG THUS, I HAD THE IDEA OF JUST USING SCAFFOLDING AND TIMBER PLANKS TO USE AS FLOORING, DISPLAY UNITS AND TEMPORARY STAIRCASES.

THE KEE KLAMP® FITTING WOULD BE USED SO IT CAN BE CHANGED OFTEN. THE IDEA OF USING THIS SYSTEM WOULD BE SO THE STAFF AND CUSTOMERS NEVER ACTUALLY TOUCH THE ORGINAL BUILDING. I HAD TO CREATE A GRID SYSTEM TO THAT WOULD BE PLACED SPECIFIALLY WHERE THE SCAFFFOLDING TOWERS WOULD AND COULD BE PLACED.
GROUND FLOOR
THE DIAGRAM ACTUALLY SHOWS THE FLOORING STRUCTURE OF THE SCAFFOLDING TUBES WHERE THEY CAN BE PLACED IN 800mm X 800mm grids. TIMBER PLANKS WOULD BE PLACED ON TOP - WITH THE JOINS HAVING ENTRY POINTS SO THE SCAFFOLDING COULD BE BUILT UPWARDS TOWARDS THE CEILING.

THE CIRCULATION AROUND THE BUILDING CAN CHANGE EVERY DAY OR EVEN EVERY HOUR.

THIS IS DUE TO THE INTERNATIONALLY UNDERSTOOD OBJECTS THAT WILL BLOCK CERTAIN PATHWAYS. THESE OBJECTS/ OBSTACLE ARE REALLY EASY TO MOVE AROUND WHICH MAKES THE EXPERIENCE REALLY FUN FOR THE CONSUMER - AS WELL AS IF THEY COME AGAIN, THE PASSAGEWAYS WILL BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

THE IDEA ALSO IS THERE IS A TIME LIMIT ON EACH FLOOR TO WANDER AROUND ON. THIS IS DUE TO ANTISCIPATION THERE WILL BE HIGH DEMAND TO SEE THIS TEMPORARY “POP UP”. THIS IS WHY THERE ARE TRAFFIC LIGHTS TELLING PEOPLE WHEN THEY CAN MOVE ON OR WHEN THEY CANNOT ENTER. THERE WILL BE ROUGHLY 20-30 MINUTES ON EACH FLOOR. (THEY NEED TO TRY ON CLOTHES TOO IN THAT TIME...)

AN INCREASE OF CHAOS HAPPENS ON EACH FLOOR FROM THE BASMENT THROUGH TO THE FIRST FLOOR. THIS MEANS MORE SCAFFOLDING TOWERS ARE PLACED AND THE PATHWAYS ARE SMALLER AND MORE WINDY
“LONG SECTION”

“STORYBOARD VISUALS” “BASEMENT”
“ KINGLY STREET ENTRANCE” THE CUSTOMERS HAVE TO QUEUE OUTSIDE AND THERE IS A BIG BOUNCER ON THE DOOR WITH A PRETEND CHECKLIST. AS SOON AS THEY CAN ENTER THEY HAVE TO GO INTO THE CONTAINER WHICH IS THE “SITE OFFICE”. IN THERE, THEIR INFORMATION WILL BE TAKEN, AN ID CARD WILL BE MADE AND THEY WILL BE TOLD TO EXIT THE OTHER SIDE. IN DOING SO THIS AREA IS WHERE THEY WILL BE BRIEFED ON THE RULES OF THIS “CONSTRUCTION SITE”. THEIR UNIFORM IS HUNG UP ON THE WALLS - HARD HATS AND HIGH VIS AND THEY WILL HAVE TO PUT THIS ON BEFORE THEY EXIT.
“DIGGER” THE CUSTOMERS WILL GO DOWN THE FIRE STAIRS AND ONTO THE BASEMENT FLOOR WHERE THEY WILL SEE A DIGGER IN THE CENTRE. THIS MAKES THE CONSTRUCTION SITE MORE REAL.
“CEMENT MIXER” ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STAIRS THERE IS ALSO A CEMENT MIXER AND FLOODLIGHTS. BRICK RUBBLE AND OFF-WHITE CLOTHING IN THE BACKGROUND CAN BE SEEN. OFF-WHITE STAFF ARE DRESSED UP AS CONSTRUCTION WORKERS TOO, AND ARE PATROLING THE AREA AS WELL AS SHOUTING OR DOING SOME MANUAL LABOUR TO GET THE WHOLE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE.
“STOCKROOM” THE STOCKROOM FOR ALL THE MECHANDICE OF OFF-WHITE IS ALL STORED ON THE BASEMENT LEVEL. IT HAS A SENSE OF OPENESS BUT ALSO CORDONED OFF FEEL TO IT. ONLY STAFF CAN ACCESS THIS AREA HOWEVER THE PUBLIC CAN CLEARLY SEE WHAT IS INSIDE AND STOCKED IN STORE. IT IS ANOTHER INTERESTING LAYER TO THIS CONCEPT BECUASE NORAMLLY STOCKROOMS ARE HIDDEN AWAY FOR PEOPLE TO NOT SEE HOWEVER, THIS ONE IS CLEARLY OPEN DUE TO THE GABIONS ARE THE ONLY THING THAT IS SEPARATING THE BOUNDARY. GABIONS ARE TRADITIONALLY FILLED WITH STONES WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE DONE, HOWEVER THERE ARE SOME EMPTY AS I WANTED PEOPLE TO PEAK INTO THE STOCKROOM.

“EXIT”
“SHOE ROOM” OFF-WHITE ARE INCREDIBLY WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER DESIGNERS AND SHOE COMPANIES SUCH AS NIKE. OFF-WHITE SHOES ARE VERY WELL RECOGNISED AS THERE IS AN ORANGE TAG ON THE TRAINERS AS IF IT IS A SECURITY TAG, WHICH IS WHAT MAKES THEM SO FAMOUS. THIS IS WHY I WANTED A SEPERATE “SHOE ROOM” THAN MIXING IT WITH THE CLOTHING OR BAG DISPLAYS AS I THINK THEY WOULD LOOK LOST AROUND THEM. THE SPECIFIC “SHOE ROOM” IS DESIGNED TO LOOK LIKE A WAREHOUSE LAYOUT: CROWDED AND BOXES EVERYWHERE. ALSO OFF-WHITE SHOE BOXES ARE JUST PLAIN CARDBOARD SO THE IDEA OF HAVING A SIMPLE STORAGE LAYOUT REALLY WORKED WITH DISPLAYING THE SHOES.

“MERCHANDISE DISPLAY” ON ALL FLOORS AND IN CERTAIN SCAFFOLDING TOWERS, THERE WILL BE CLOTHING DISPLASYS USING THE SCAFFOLDING POLE AS A HANGING RACK. BAGS WILL ALSO BE DISPLAYED USING THE SAME TIMBER FLOOR TEXTURE AS SHELVING. THE SPACE IS MEANT TO BE CRAMPED, OVER PACKED AND CLUTTERED JUST LIKE A REAL CONSTRICTION SITE.
“PORTALOO CHANGING ROOMS” ALL THE ROOMS AND ITEMS USED IN THIS RETAIL SPACE ARE ALL USED ON CONSTRUCTION SITES. FOR EXAMPLE THESE “PORTALOOS” WOULD HAVE BEEN RIPPED AND HAD HOOKS, SEATING AND MIRROWS PLACED INSIDE OF THEM TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE CHANGING PLACE.

“CENTRAL STAIRCASE” THIS VIEW IS FROM THE FIRST FLOOR LOOKING DOWN THE VOID TO THE CENTER OF THE BASEMENT. ITS INTERESTING TO SEE HOW COMPLEX AN MANIC THE STRUCTURE LOOKS.

“REGENT STREET EXIT” THROUGH EXITING THE FRONT DOORS THE CUSTOMERS WILL HAVE TO WALK A FEW PACES BEFORE THEY CAN EXIT THROUGH THE CONSTRUCTION SITE HOARDING ON REGENT STREET. THIS IDEA IS THAT IT IS ACTUALLY LIKE LEAVING A BUILDING SITE AND PEOPLE UNKNOWN TO THE POP-UP WALKING PAST ON REGENT STREET WILL NOT THINK ANYTHING OF IT OTHER THAN BUILDERS LEAVING THE SITE... I REALLY LIKED THE IDEA OF THE CUSTOMERS ENTERING THROUGH THE BACK ALLY (A VERY QUIET/UNKNOWN ENTRANCE) AND LEAVING ONTO ONE OF THE BUISESTS STREETS WORLDWIDE. IT IS THE “UNKNOWN” AND INTRIGUING FACTOR THAT I THINK PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY ENJOY THIS THRILL SEEKING ON WHAT NOT TO EXPECT.
“EXIT” THE WAY TO EXIT THE RETAIL SPACE IS TO COME DOWN THE STAIRS FROM THE FIRST FLOOR AND THROUGH THE PATHWAY CREATED OUT OF TEMPORARY WALLS. THIS IS DUE TO THE FRONT OF THE STORE BEING GRADE II LISTED (WINDOWS, METAL FRAMES AND MOSAIC TILING) BUT ALSO BECAUSE TEMPOARY WALLS ARE ALWAYS USED ON CONSTRUCTION SITES. ALSO, BECAUSE I DONT WANT THE CONSUMERS TO TOUCH OR SEE THE ORGINAL BUILDING - SO COVERING IT UP IS THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. THE CUSTOMERS WALK AROUND THE PATHWAY AND INTO THE SITE OFFICE (CONTAINER) TO GIVE BACK THEIR UNIFORM OF HIGH VIS AND A HARD HAT. THEY CAN THEN LEAVE THROUGH THE OTHER DOOR AND EXIT THROUGH THE FRONT DOORS.

THE EXISTING INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING HAS A WOODEN FLOORING AND WHITE PLASTER WALLS. THROUGHOUT THE YEARS EVERYTHING HAS BEEN RIPPED OUT ADN REPLACED AND IT WAS RECENTLY IN 2008 SO NOTHING IS IN MUCH NEED FOR A COMPULSORY REPAIR.
THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF MY OFF-WHITE RETAIL STORE NEEDS A LIST OF INGREDIENTS FOR A CONSTRUCTION SITE. AS EVERYTHING WILL BE BUILT THROUGH USING THE SCAFFOLDING KEE KLAMP SYSTEM TIMBER WILL BE USED AS A FOOTPATH MATERIAL. NO INGREDIENTS WILL BE LONG LASTING E.G. LIKE PAINT OR FLOOR TILES AS NOTHING WILL BE TOUCHING THE ORIGINAL BUILDING.
THE COLOUR THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR WILL BE VERY INDUSTIRAL THUS, NATURAL WOODS WITH THE CONTRAST OF REFLECTIVE METALS WILL LOOK ‘SHABBY CHIC’. WITH THE ADDITON OF FLUORESCENT COLOURS AND REFLECTIVE STRIPS IT WILL REALLY STAND OUT IN THE FLOOD LIGHTING TOO. WITH THE MESH STAIRCASE AND SCAFFOLDIGN POLES BEING A STRIKING SILVER IN COLOURS IT WILL REFELECT ALL THE COLOURS AROUND THE BUILDING CREATING A ‘CHAOS’ EFFECT.
THE MATERIALS CHOSEN WILL MAKE THE PROJECT MORE REALISTIC AND SO THE OBJECTS WILL BE SOURCED FROM CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES TO RENT OR BUY. THE IDEA IS THAT THIS CAN ALL BE PACKED UP AND TRANSPORTED ELSEWHERE TO ANOTHER SITE LOCATION PROMOTING THE OFF-WHITE BRAND SO EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE A TEMPORARY AND TRANSPORTABLE QUALITY TO IT.

SCAFFOLDING POLES CAN EITHER BE BOUGHT OR RENTED OUT BUT CAN BE USED OVER AND OVER CREATING DIFFERENT SHAPED STRUCTURES.

“SUSTAINABLITY” “FABRICATTION” I AM VERY AWARE REATIL INTERIORS ARE EXTREMELY WASTFUL ESPECIALLY SEASONALL OUTLETS THROWING AWAY EVERY FEW MONTHS FROM EACH SEASON. THIS IS WHY MY POPUP HAS THIS ADAPTABLE REVALUE IN THE WAY I DESIGNED IT. I WAS CONSCIOUS MY POP-UP WAS NOT GOING TO BE LONG LASTING AND SO I DIDN'T WANT TO UNNECESSARILY RIP OUT FITTINGS WHEN IT COULD EASILY BE ADAPTED. THIS IS ALSO WHY THE SCAFFOLDING GRID STRUCTURE IS MY ‘SHELL’ OF MY BUILDING - SO THE AREA I AM WORKING WITH IS NOT ACTUALLY USING OR ADJUSTING THE ORIGINAL FIXTURES AND FITTINGS.
“OBJECTS” THE OBJECTS THAT I HAVE BROUGHT INTO MY POP UP SUCH AS THE DIGGER OR CEMENT MIXER DO NOT ACTUALLY HAVE TO BE IN REAL WORKING CONDITION. AS THEY WILL NEVER BE ‘TURNED ON’, THEY COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN BOUGHT OFF SOMEONE WHO WAS PLANNING TO PUT THEM INTO LANDFILL. THE SCAFFOLDING AND SITE OBJECTS CAN EITHER BE BOUGHT OUTRIGHT OR RENTED OUT FROM A NEAR SUPPLIER. THIS MEANS IF IT IS RENTED AND THE POP UP IS THEN BEING PROMOTED IN JPAAPN FOR EXAMPLE, THE SHIPPING FUEL AND COSTS WILL NOT BE ASTRONOMICAL. TO CREATE THE ‘CHASOS’ USING RUBBLE IN THE VOID AREA - THIS WOULD BE COLLECTED FROM A LOCAL BUILDING SITE OR SKIP. THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO SMASH UP PERFECTLY FINE BRICKS FOR EXAMPLE. ALSO THEY COULD BE BOUGHT THROUGH ‘GUMTREE’ A WEBSITE TO COLLECT PEOPLES UNWANTED GOODS IN THE LOCAL AREA.
“FLOORING” AS THE FLOORING IS TIMBER WOOD, ONCE USED AND IF IT BECOMES TOO DAMAGED IT CAN ALWAYS BE USED FOR ANOTHER USE SUCH AS: FIRE WOOD, WOODCHIP OR MADE INTO FURNATURE.
“LIGHTING” LIGHTING IS A KET ELEMENT TO THE DESIGN. THE VOID IN THE MIDDLE CREATES A BEAUTIFUL NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING AND I PURPOSFULLY KEPT THIS AS AN OPEN SPACE FOR IT TO FEED THROUGH TO ALL THE LEVELS. THUS, ONLY SMALL LED FLOODLIGHTS ARE USED IN THE SCAFFOLDING MAZE STURCTURE - LED BEING ONE OF THE MOST EFFICENT METHODS OF LIGHTING WE HAVE THESE DAYS.
“TRANSPORTATION AND REUSE” MY LIST OF INGREDIENTS CAN ALL BE PICKED UP AND PUT ELSEWHERE FOR ANOTHER DURATION OF LIFE. THE PERFECT THING ABOUT THE KEE KLAMP SYSTEM IS THAT IT CAN BE TAKEN APART AND REUSED AND MODDELLED AS S STURCTURE FOR A DIFFERENT SIZED SPACE WITHOUT ANY WASTEAGE. ALL THESE ELEMENTS CAN BE TRANSPORTED ELSEWHERE MEANING NOTHING SHOULD BE GIVEN TO LANDFILL.
