Falmouth University About Us We have a history of more than a century of creativity and design. Beginning in 1902 as Falmouth School of Art, our institution now boasts a global reputation and courses that represent the breadth of the Creative Industries, one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the UK. Falmouth is looking to the future, working at the cutting-edge of innovation; where technology, creativity and invention bring ideas to life. Today, our vibrant and inclusive community is home to more than 5,000 students from all over the world. Our students study on two campuses offering worldclass facilities that rival any professional environment. They’re dynamic places where people collaborate across disciplines and departments to push boundaries and create work that makes an impact. We do things for real at Falmouth, so our students learn from experienced professionals with great connections. Not only that, our students get hands-on industry experience while they study, getting ready for life after graduation.

4

We know that the student experience is about more than a great education. So, our Students’ Union offers more than 150 clubs, societies and opportunities to get involved with volunteering. Not only that, we’re in an incredible location that offers festivals, music, theatre, art, culture, sport and fantastic food, right on the doorstep. Of course, there aren’t many universities that have a campus only a five-minute walk from the beach. And further afield, there’s the sort of natural environment that has been inspiring creatives and inventors for generations.

6

In the future, creativity becomes an important bridge connecting people and new technologies in meaningful new ways. It’s taking traditional industries and transforming them. It’s enabling new ways of working, thinking, communicating and engaging. It’s producing new ideas, products, services and solutions. That’s why Falmouth is such an amazing place to live and study. POLITICS SOCIETY

Students’ Union FXU, our Students’ Union, is the only union in the country to represent students from two different universities; Falmouth and Exeter. FXU’s aim is to ensure every student has the highest quality of education and the best student experience possible during their time in Cornwall. The Student Union puts your voice at the heart of everything it does. Although a relatively small students’ union, it has one of the highest levels of participation in the country. The team provides societies, sports clubs, volunteering and fundraising opportunities, and the chance to be politically active and represent your coursemates and colleagues. It doesn’t stop there. FXU offers confidential and objective support and advice on anything from financial concerns, to welfare, to accommodation and course queries, at any stage of your degree. The team are here for you in the run up to the first time you arrive, right up until the day you graduate. Each year the Student Union elects, trains and supports over 200 Falmouth students to act as Course Representatives. They gather and represent student feedback; getting the student voice to the places where decisions about your experience are made.

Becoming a Rep gives students the opportunity to work closely with their course team and develop valuable leadership skills whilst shaping their university experience. It’s often the extracurricular activities which can take your degree from being good to being great. That’s why the Student Union runs hundreds of societies and clubs, over 1,000 activities a year, and averages around 20,000 volunteering hours. On the clubs and societies front, there’s something for everyone - from the classic groups such as Fal Surf and RAD (fundraising society) through to beekeeping and the martial art, Tang Soo Do. The societies are free to try and will often become an integral part of your university life. The Student Union also run Voices, a student-led campaign providing a platform for people whose voices might previously have been lost in the noise. A multichannel venture, on and off line, Voices is comprised of impactful events and printed volumes, sharing the raw, authentic experiences of our students.

“We have a whole team to help with advice and support, covering everything from money issues through to if you have a problem with your landlord. You can go to them with anything and everything will be confidential.” Callie Edwards Student Union President Falmouth fxu.org.uk

AN ACE UP THE SLEEVE Creative Events Management alumnus, Sam Ruddick, has come up aces after his big gamble paid off. He took a risk and headed straight from Falmouth to Amsterdam after graduating, and ended up landing a dream job as an assistant agent for DJ Martin Garrix at leading electronic music booking firm, Ace Agency. “During my last year at university and when I first graduated, I’d been doing some freelance work in various aspects of event production at European festivals working on shows for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Dua Lipa and Sigur Ros; but as the majority of this kind of work is during the summer, I needed a full-time position,” he says. “I decided to take a bit of a gamble and move to Amsterdam. My day-to-day work at Ace Agency involves a wide variety of different tasks. These include creating and maintaining the detailed overview of upcoming shows, reviewing and handling signed contracts and their adjustments, as well as coordinating ticket sales checks and announcements of new shows. Due to the nature of the job, each day can be very different, which definitely helps to keep things interesting!

AWARD-WINNING ILLUSTRATOR GOES GLOBAL Every artist has a dream. For actors, it’s their name in lights on Broadway, for writers, it’s topping the best-sellers list, for illustrators, it’s featuring in The New Yorker. Less than two years after graduating from Illustration, this dream came true for David Doran. In fact, by the end of his third year, he had so many commissions from clients in London and America, that drawing became his full time job.

of exploring conceptual elements alongside learning how to work in the real world. “It’s totally possible to make a career out of illustration. There’ll be a lot of late nights and hard work no one else will see or acknowledge but it’s totally worth it. If you’re passionate about drawing and making a go of it, then give it everything you’ve got.”

And with a client list that includes The New Yorker, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Airbnb, The Sunday Times, Vogue and the BAFTAs, David’s decision to be serious about being an illustrator means he gets to live his dream everyday. “I’d always enjoyed drawing,” he says. “I knew I wanted to do something creative and illustration is the perfect mix of fine art and design. It was the course itself, and the reputation it has for students going on to make a living from illustration, that drew me to Falmouth and it gave me great experience

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE You never know where an idea that could change the world is going to come from. For Sustainable Product Design student, Charles Clarke, it came while at university. “I’ve managed to create something from waste that could be beautiful,” he says. “It’s an exciting moment – I really feel my career is being kick-started right now. My product – a light – is currently in development stage and my university tutors have been really encouraging. My time at Falmouth has been life-changing.” Working alongside the Eden Project and lighting designer superstar (and former Falmouth student), Tom Raffield, Charles is using offcuts of wood to create his own innovative lighting solutions - some of which are set to be used in the Eden Project’s new, sustainably designed hotel. Charles adds: “Sustainability is absolutely integral to the course; it’s been at the core of everything we do from day one. “I’ve learned a lot about materials and it’s made me realise as a designer how things need to change. On a personal level, it has made me see that we could all make a difference – it’s up to people like us to change the minds of others.”

“Sustainability is absolutely integral to the course; it’s been at the core of everything we do from day one.”

A PERFECT BLEND OF LOGIC & CREATIVITY Architecture has always been in Jessica Fairlie’s blueprint but discovering what she loved didn’t always follow the plan. In fact, it was a phone call while she was in Sri Lanka, where she was travelling after already completing a degree in pharmacology, which ended up sealing the deal. “I actually interviewed for the course over the phone from a hotel room in Sri Lanka,” she says. “Right from that moment it sounded like this was a course where they care about you and your development. I knew straight away it was for me. “All the projects we worked on, right from the first year, were live projects and gave us an honest experience of the realities of the profession. We could totally immerse ourselves within the projects as the sites were local. I even camped out at Goonhilly Downs for a project where we had to design an observatory there.” After graduating in 2018, Jess landed a job as an Architectural Assistant with the pioneering Cornish firm, KAST Architects. She adds: “I’m designing things already, which is really cool! I love the fact I’m working for a practice that wants to build sustainably. I’m now working on

projects where I can design buildings that are made for their settings as well as being contemporary and this is something incredibly important to me. “For me, architecture is a perfect blend of logic and creativity. To do it you have to be prepared to work hard but it’s so rewarding. If you’re passionate about architecture, then choose a course that suits you, immerse yourself in it, get stuck in and really go for it.”

ADLAND’S DYNAMIC DUO Creative Advertising graduates Ben Fallows and Matt Deacon are regarded as two of the brightest young talents and hottest prospects around in the advertising industry - just five years after graduating. From Lidl to Lexus, the dynamic duo are the brains behind a series of award-winning ad campaigns and have already worked at two of London’s most prestigious agencies. They are the ideas people and, after teaming up in their very first week at university, have never looked back. “Being able to think of the most bonkers, crazy ideas and then having someone commision you to turn them into a reality never gets old,” says Ben. “We can be having a drink together in the pub, come up with a wacky idea and then, before we know it, a big brand is asking us to go out and make it. It’s the most fun job around and being able to bring our ideas to life is the coolest thing. And one of the best things about it is the sky’s the limit as to what we can do. “Creative advertising is a great thing to study if you’re a little bit unsure of what you want to do because it pulls in so many different skills. “We were on placement for 18 months before we were offered our first job. It’s really hard graft, but once you make it, it’s everything you’d ever hoped it would be. You just have to work really hard for it.”

These were some of the main drivers behind an innovative project run by Fashion Marketing and Interior Design students in partnership with esteemed design company, Campaign. “Campaign presented us with a brief to form a solution to declining footfall on the high street. We decided to design and brand a pop-up event that would challenge the traditional customer shopping experience,” says second year Fashion Marketing student, Ella Smith, who was in charge of coordinating the project. “We wanted to push the concept of a jewellery shop, making it a playable experience for customers instead of just peering into glass boxes. The purpose is to create a fun and immersive experience that will help customers fall in love with the high street again. Having the visitors actively participate in order to find the rings should encourage them to put their phones down and live in the moment! “It’s been an amazing experience and working with a great team of people from different courses has made us all grow so much. It couldn’t have happened without Falmouth. Everything from the original brief, sponsorship, funding, and industry

contacts has made this possible. The lecturers in particular have been really encouraging us to push the design concept and experience,” she adds.

“It’s been an amazing experience and working with a great team of people from different courses has made us all grow so much.”

ADVENTURES IN CREATIVITY From the age of 14, Sophie Webster, knew she wanted to tell stories through pictures. “I’ve never been interested in how a camera works,” she says. “All the mechanics and the technical side of it hold no interest for me at all. I’m driven by ideas and, as a storyteller, have always wanted my work to have a rich narrative running through it. I was lucky. I found very early on what I was good at and what I loved.” It was this mindset that led Sophie to study Fashion Photography where it didn’t take long for her to make her mark. At the end of her first year, she won a prestigious competition run by Sony and House of Holland, and since then hasn’t looked back. She adds: “I graduated in 2018 and have continued to build my career in fashion photography while at the same time working as a creative director with a London agency, helping clients in London, Europe, and the Middle East bring their stories to life including running a photoshoot in the Shard. “I’ve loved seeing my creativity come into fruition in the real world and seeing clients become as passionate about my ideas as I am. I’ve learned how to manage copywriters, marketers, graphic designers, videographers and liaise with those working in business development.

“Falmouth was such a good breeding ground for experimenting and collaborating with others - it really helped me develop my own personal style and approach.”

SETTING SAIL FOR THE STARS Space might be the final frontier but for Animation & Visual Effects students it’s just the setting for another day’s work. As creative briefs go, they don’t come much bigger than being tasked to create a film for the International Space Development conference in Los Angeles. Yet this was the challenge students faced when given the brief by engineer, David Evans, and Course Coordinator, Derek Hayes, to explore the possibility of returning to and colonising the moon. Derek explains: “A big part of the second year of the course is dedicated to live briefs from outside organisations, which give students a taste of working with a real client to a professional brief and deadline. “This particular brief was something special, since it required students to grasp some interesting scientific concepts and translate them into inspirational films that would satisfy both scientists and the general public.” The result, according to David Evans, was definitely something out of this world. “I’ve worked with professional animators, guys at Nvidia and of course students, and I’d say the Falmouth teams are up

96

there with the best,” he said. “They dealt with a hugely complex scenario and performed exceptionally.”

“I’ve worked with professional animators, guys at Nvidia and of course students, and I’d say the Falmouth teams are up there with the best.”

SKILLS HONED IN CREATIVE HUB “What’s great about studying Television at Falmouth is they recreate industry as much as possible - it’s a perfect microcosm of the industry and means, when you finish, you feel completely ready to begin your career in the industry and know exactly what you’re meant to do.” Amy Gillies is a third year Television student who was adamant she wanted to study in the city. This all changed on her first visit to Falmouth. “My first thought was ‘oh my God, it’s perfect’ everyone’s like me,” she says. “It’s amazing to be in such a creative hub and space where there’s so much collaboration across courses and, right from day one, it’s felt like the perfect place where I could nurture and hone my craft while studying television.” With placements at Disney Media+ and NBC Universal Hothouse, as well as overseeing the production of six-part in-house series Spilling the Beans, Amy has been able to put her skills to the test in industry already and is excited for what the future holds. “Television is becoming ever more accessible, particularly with video on demand services like Netflix. It’s becoming a lot more adaptable, and people can now watch what they want, when

they want to. Short form content, like Instagram TV, has a huge role to play and has already been integrated into the course. The industry is moving so quickly and the course really reflects this.”

“It’s amazing to be in such a creative hub and space where there’s so much collaboration across courses.”

FUNDING SUCCESS FOR DEVELOPERS It’s full steam ahead for RoBoats, a daring adventure on the high seas that captured the imagination of some of the industry’s biggest players. The brainchild of games studio, Animal Puree, run by Games Academy graduates, RoBoats sees players working in pairs and controlling their boats from a smart device as they take on the role of Captain or Gunner and battle 12 other players. This innovative approach of using an app to power the controller helped secure the team a £5,000 grant from the UK Games Fund’s Tranzfuser programme. “We focussed our third year on developing a marketable game with the intention of setting up a company, and it’s amazing to do so with the right people, the right project and a load of support. Being accepted into Tranzfuser confirmed we made the right choice,” says Team Lead and Game Development graduate, Troy Atkinson. “The Games Academy provided a fantastic amount of support for our ongoing game projects, from around the clock studio space to designated lecturers who guide and push your team through development, while also not interfering with the creative process.

“Alongside the development projects, the lecturers at the Games Academy have provided us with lectures and workshops that have prepared us for any route into the games industry, as well as giving us an academic understanding of the industry.”

STANDING ON THE VERGE OF GREATNESS From supporting Sigrid on tour in New York, featuring on the FIFA 18 soundtrack and breaking through seven million plays of their single ‘You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead Of You Baby’ on Spotify, life has been a whirlwind for Lily Somerville and Megan Markwick since releasing their first track as IDER in 2016. “When we put our first IDER track out in April 2016 we had absolutely no idea what was going to come of it,” Lily says. “We had four songs in our back pocket that we’d recorded and we decided to just put the first one out there and see what would happen.” The duo were signed less than a year later and are now preparing to release their first album and head out on their first UK and European tour. They met in their first semester and have been making music together ever since. Their sound has evolved from a folk and country background to an ethereal blend of pop electronica and R’n’B, underscored with their trademark harmonies. Megan adds: “We’ve got big ambitions for the future. We want to be touring more, playing at festivals, and we’re really excited for our album release with our new music that’s bigger and braver than anything we’ve done before.”

So what would their advice be for people who dream of making it the music industry? “You have to work extremely hard for a little bit of luck,” Lily says. “You have to put yourself out there and take every opportunity. You’ve got to really believe in yourself. The hard work is key. There’s so many talented people doing incredible things, you just have to be willing to make sure you’re one of the people who are noticed.”

Lily and Megan graduated from the Popular Music course in 2014.

“You have to put yourself out there and take every opportunity. You’ve got to really believe in yourself. The hard work is key.”

CONSERVING THE NATURAL WORLD From featuring in the BBC Wildlife magazine to being shortlisted for the Young Talents Category at the Innsbruck Nature Film Festival for the second time in a row, the future is looking picture-perfect for 2018 Marine & Natural History Photography graduate, Daphne Wong. “My work primarily tells stories surrounding nature and its conservation. I hope to inspire people to respect and conserve the natural world,” says Daphne. “The images from my portfolio selected by BBC Wildlife showcased the very unique and diverse wildlife of my home city, Hong Kong. My second year film project explored the native honey bee and natural beekeeping practices by a beekeeper in West Cornwall. “As a natural history photographer and filmmaker, the beauty of the natural world and the urge to encourage people to discover and protect it is a major driving force when I’m working on projects. The Cornish setting has been key in motivating me to get out there every day and appreciate nature, and the accessibility of wildlife has furthered my passion for conservation efforts.” It was Daphne’s 30-minute documentary, ‘白海豚失樂園 Breathing Room’, about the plight of the Chinese White Dolphin in

Hong Kong that was shortlisted at Innsbruck Nature Film Festival. She adds: “It’s always rewarding to share my work globally and raise awareness for these species, the threats they are facing and the work being done to save them.”

STUDENT SCOOPS TOP BBC AWARD A bright future lies in store for Press & Editorial Photography student, Peter Flude, after he was named Visual Journalist of the Year at the BBC Radio 4 Today programme’s first ever Student Journalism Awards in 2018. From a shortlist selected by prominent BBC journalist Nick Robinson and The Spectator’s Isabel Hardman, Peter’s winning submissions were projects he worked on during his second year. These included two short films he produced, one about a group of cold water swimmers from Bude in Cornwall, and the second about an all-refugee football team from his hometown of Chichester. He also submitted a short story on the charity Surfers Against Sewage, which he filmed for The Guardian. Speaking of the award win, Peter says: “It was really exciting to be surrounded by lots of industry professionals and to hear their encouraging and welcoming words to the next generation. I was obviously slightly nervous but also incredibly grateful to be there. “I really hadn’t gone there expecting to win my category so I was amazed when they called my name. It’s really reassuring to know that people have responded to my work at this level.

I’m not certain on the exact route I’m going to take with my photography but to have an opportunity like this, which could help me into the industry, is brilliant.”

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SPORTS JOURNALISM STAR With positions at global powerhouses ESPN and Reuters already under his belt and Match of the Day presenter, Mark Chapman, as his industry mentor, the future’s looking bright for third year Sports Journalism student, Shaun Dacosta.

brilliant at engaging everyone he interviews and talks to. He’s unbiased, clear, and one of the best presenters out there. While I was at ESPN, I saw him in the pub and plucked up the courage to ask his advice on how to make it the industry.

A potent blend of hard work, perseverance, and being in the right place at the right time all combined to help Shaun seize the opportunities in front of him. It was while filming the football team Hashtag United, set up by a YouTuber with more than one million followers, who were playing in Newquay, that Shaun met a contact who was able to help him secure a placement at ESPN.

“He was really impressed with the initiative I’d shown, was full of useful advice and from there offered to be my mentor which is both brilliant and surreal!”

ESPN were so impressed with Shaun they extended his work experience to a paid position which saw him editing and uploading videos for their YouTube channel. “By far and away the best video I did for ESPN was when Usain Bolt made his debut for the West Coast Mariners. It’s already had three million views and, from it, there was a ten percent increase in subscribers to the YouTube channel,” he adds. It was during his time at ESPN that Shaun met Mark Chapman: “He’s always been an idol of mine, he’s so clear speaking and is

Entry Requirements At Falmouth, we assess every applicant on individual merit. We’re looking for students who can demonstrate enthusiasm and potential to succeed in their chosen subject, and consider a range of qualifications and relevant experience.

Entry Qualifications

If English isn’t your first language we accept a range of recognised English language qualifications that are Entry Qualifications Language Requirements equivalent to the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. For a list of some of these equivalents, visit falmouth.ac.uk/apply

A typical offer is for 104-120 UCAS points, primarily from Level 3 equivalent qualifications such as A-levels, BTECs or Foundation Diplomas in Art & Design. An offer for Architecture is for 120 to 136 UCAS points.

If you are an international applicant and need a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you should take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) to fulfil government visa requirements. Our Applicant Services team can help with any questions about suitable language tests.

Due to the creative nature of our courses, you’ll be considered on your individual potential to succeed. We encourage you to get in touch if you are predicted grades outside of this range, are thinking of transferring, or if you have other qualifications or professional experience.

Once you have applied you will be invited to attend an interview or audition. Finance

We believe that your future is worth investing in. Our Student Funding team is armed with the latest information on finance, fees and bursaries – making sure that you realise your creative potential by getting all the help you’re entitled to. There are two main costs involved in university life: tuition fees and the cost of living. You can find out more about these, and about funding and budgeting, online at falmouth.ac.uk/student-funding

How Much are Tuition Fees? Tuition fees for students starting in 2020 have not yet been confirmed by the UK government. Most UK students don’t have to pay for fees up-front. If you successfully apply to the Student Loans Company for a fee loan they’ll pay tuition fees directly on your behalf. As a guide to costs, UK students on full-time, two- and three-year undergraduate degrees currently pay £9,250 a year in fees. Full-time EU students currently pay £9,250 a year, and full-time undergraduate international students pay £15,000 per year. Our fees for September 2020 entry will be published in autumn 2019 and will be available online at falmouth.ac.uk/tuition-fees

168

It’s worth remembering that while you’re studying, you’ll also have some additional costs. These vary depending on your course (you can get a breakdown on the course web page), but typically include materials or equipment and expenses related to study trips and placements. Some costs are optional and our Student Funding team can advise whether you might be eligible for help.

What Government Support is Available? The government offers full-time UK students two different types of support: tuition fee loans and support to help with living costs. To find out more about this support and how to apply for it, download a copy of our Money Matters guide at falmouth.ac.uk/ student-funding

Bursaries and Awards Today’s creatives need to be digitally agile and internationally focussed. This means having access to the right equipment and opportunities. We’re committed to helping you access these, regardless of your personal circumstances. All bursaries and awards are provided on top of any government support you’re entitled to. Through the University and external trusts we offer a number of awards and scholarships for specific purposes: Cornwall Award: UK students who have a Cornish address when applying and meet certain eligibility criteria qualify for £500 a year to help with equipment, placements and final year costs. Materials Award: All UK students with a household income of under £25,000 a year automatically receive a Materials Award, which varies in size from £100-£200 a year depending on your area of study. The For Real Award: Open to students wanting to take a course-related extracurricular trip or placement. External Awards: Designed to help you take international course-related trips for exhibitions, trade shows and research.

Additional Bursaries If you were either in care at age 16 or in receipt of a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant from Student Finance, you could receive a fixed bursary. The Care Leavers’ Bursary is £1,000 a year and the Dependants’ Bursary is £250 a year.

International Scholarships Our scholarship awards aim to encourage diversity and excellence. For international students who can demonstrate ambition, passion and dedication to their subject area, there are a number of scholarships available. Awards for 2020/21 will be set later this year.

Falmouth Hardship Fund If you find yourself in financial difficulty once you’ve enrolled, you may be able to get assistance from our hardship fund. This fund is designed to help meet any unforeseen course-related costs such as books and equipment, travel, or general living costs such as rent.
