ZERO WASTE SOCIETY Our Students’ Union is the only union in the country to represent students from two different universities; Falmouth and Exeter. Its aim is to ensure every student has the highest quality education and the best student experience possible during their time in Cornwall. The Students’ Union puts your voice at the heart of everything it does. Although a relatively small students’ union, it has one of the highest levels of participation in the country. The team provides societies, sports clubs, volunteering and fundraising opportunities and the chance to be politically active and represent your coursemates and colleagues. It doesn’t stop there. The Union offers confidential and objective support and advice on anything from financial concerns and welfare, to accommodation and course queries, at any stage of your degree. Each year The Students’ Union elects, trains and supports over 200 Falmouth students to act as Course Representatives. They gather and represent student feedback; getting the student voice to the places where decisions about your experience are made. Becoming a Rep gives students the opportunity to work closely with their course team and develop valuable leadership skills whilst shaping their university experience. It’s often the extracurricular activities which can take your degree from being good to being great. That’s why The Students’ Union runs hundreds of societies and clubs, over a thousand activities a year, and clocks up thousands of volunteering hours (nearly 30k in the last academic year!). On the clubs and societies front, there’s something for everyone - from the classic groups such as Fal Surf and RAD (fundraising society) through to Beekeeping, African Caribbean, Pride and the martial art, Tang Soo Do. The societies are free to try and will often become an integral part of your university life.
“We have a whole team to help with advice and support, covering everything from money issues through to if you have a problem with your landlord. You can go to them with anything and everything will be confidential.” Callie Edwards Students’ Union President Falmouth thesu.org.uk

FUTURE BY DESIGN
With plans to start her own practice in Cornwall, to revolutionise architecture in local communities and to champion sustainable building, award-winning architecture graduate, Nina Jones, is hard at work on the blueprints for her future.
“It was incredible to be printed in the Architects’ Journal,” she says. “It’s the biggest architectural journal that exists and every architect has a copy on their desk. It was great to make it down to the final eight for their student prize in the sustainability category too.
She graduated in 2019 and swiftly secured a position as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at a leading Welsh firm. During her time at Falmouth, Nina built up a list of accolades including Best Final Year Student, winning the Open Award at the Architects for Health Student Design Awards, being shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal Student Prize in the Sustainability category and being featured in the RIBA Student Show 2019 ‘Industrialised’.
“I love what I’m doing now but want to start up my own practice eventually. I love the people side of architecture and the smaller scale projects that have a real impact on the lives of people living in small communities. Buildings should be built for the people who are going to inhabit them and they need to be made to work for them - not just to be nice to look at.”
“The course at Falmouth is a really creative course in comparison to others in the country. There are amazing workshop facilities and for people who like making things like I do, it’s perfect.” Nina Jones, graduate

FROM INTERN TO EXEC - A YEAR AT HARVEY NICHOLS When Fashion Marketing student, Phoebe Jones, turned up to a group interview for an internship at Harvey Nichols she had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Phoebe was one of ten students applying for the position and the only student from a university outside of London. She knew the competition was going to be tough. A couple of days later her phone rang and she was offered a three month internship working with the online marketing team. “From the beginning they were amazing about getting me involved,” she says.
“I went to all the meetings, got to see where the company was going, was able to work on photoshoots with the editorial team, and work with them to help set up their in-house magazine. I also got to work with some amazing photographers and models. “Part way through the year my manager ended up leaving and I covered the majority of the exec role for the last three months of my placement. It was an amazing experience and something I wouldn’t have had elsewhere.”
“I went into the placement thinking I’d love to get something more out of it. I worked really hard for three months and a week before I was due to head back to uni they offered me a full-time position for a year!” Phoebe Jones, student

GREEN GAMING
Studio Mutiny, a team of Falmouth graduates are breaking new ground by using gaming to tackle and raise awareness of conservation, ecology and the climate emergency. In their second year, a group of students, who have now all graduated, formed Studio Mutiny. After winning the vote for the best game on the course two years on the bounce, the team decided to see how far they could go. Since then, they have been incubated by the Games Academy, showcased their work at EGX and have won the first stage of Tranzfuser, a government funded grant scheme for graduate game developers, which awards £25k for game development and they are confident about stage two.
“The game is called Sai and it’s a Celtic action adventure game. The game and the studio are all centred around ecology and conservation. Essentially, the game is about deforestation. You play as a Celtic warrior trying to protect the forest,” says Jonny Lee, one of Studio Mutiny’s designers. “We all love making games together but I think the most important thing for us is making a game that tackles the things we’re interested in, outside of game development, like conservation. We feel really lucky to be able to do it because a lot of people get stuck making games for the sake of making games but we’re able to contribute to wider issues affecting society through what we’re good at which is incredibly exciting.”
“We’ve received so much support from the Games Academy itself. Since we graduated they housed us in their studio and gave us hardware to work on. We definitely wouldn’t have succeeded if they didn’t do that.” Jonny Lee, graduate

I WANT TO WIN THE MERCURY PRIZE Picked as ‘one to watch’ by the Guardian in late 2019, life has been a whirlwind for rising British-Nigerian R&B artist, Tony Njoku, since he graduated from the Popular Music course in the summer of 2016. From playing the main stage at the Green Man Festival and performing at the Roundhouse through to starring at the Sonic City Festival in Belgium, Tony says while each year has seen exponential growth, his journey’s been a gradual and natural progression. “It’s been a gradual progression in terms of the goals I’ve set and where I am right now,” he says. “Music is very necessary for me.
If I don’t have enough music playing around me I get music dehydration and don’t feel very well! It compels me to keep on making music and explore what’s going on in myself, my head and my heart. It’s self-discovery and it’s necessary for me to have music.” “I used to be ashamed of saying this but I really want to win a Mercury Prize. In the immediate future, more touring is going to be imperative for me, I want to do more collaborations and stretch my creativity into doing more visual arts and audio visual work. I like to think there are no limits on what I can do and how far I can go.”
“Falmouth’s the perfect place to study, to incubate and nurture ideas and to discover more about yourself and your music. It was a great way to learn, play, explore and experiment.” Tony Njoku, graduate

Preparing Your Application Personal Statement Your personal statement is an important part of your application. It’s your chance to tell us about your skills, experiences and extracurricular activities, what excites you about your chosen field of study and what your ambitions are for the future. Simple and clearly defined structures help make personal statements easier to understand and more compelling as well as easier to write. Try using our three section approach to build your personal statement: Part 1 - explain why you are making the application
TOP TIPS Personal statement tips from English with Creative Writing student Amber Martin Show, don’t tell - try and convey why you are passionate about the course; talk about relevant projects you have worked on, any completed work experience relating to your subject or even discuss books that you have read that have made an impact on your decision. Don’t rush - give yourself time to reflect upon and edit your work. Get someone to proofread your first draft you might’ve missed out some valuable info or have the odd typo or spelling mistake that needs to be fixed.
Portfolio What is a university portfolio?
Part 2 - highlight your academic experience, knowledge and abilities
A portfolio is a collection of your creative work. It’s a way to demonstrate your ability and your personality. They can either be a physical or digital document.
Part 3 - summarise your extracurricular interests and skills
No one can create like you do, so make the most of your portfolio. How do you make a portfolio? Think of your portfolio like a good story. You’ll want a beginning, a middle and an end. It’ll showcase your process, including sketchbooks and preliminary work. It’s worth putting in a variety of techniques and processes. Remember, it’s about quality over quantity.
168
What should you include in a portfolio? The kinds of things you’ll need to include in your portfolio depends on the course you’re applying for. You can find out about coursespecific portfolios in the ‘how to apply’ section on our course webpages.
“The prospect of starting your portfolio for university can be really daunting, but actually it’s just a chance to show off your strengths and your passion for the subject. The main thing is to make sure you give yourself enough time to collect your designs, things you want to include and gather it into a portfolio that you can be really proud of!” Hebe Knight Fashion Design student

Finance
We believe that your future is worth investing in. Our Student Funding team is armed with the latest information on finance, fees and bursaries – making sure that you realise your creative potential by getting all the help you’re entitled to. There are two main costs involved in university life; tuition fees and the cost of living. You can find out more about these, and about funding and budgeting, online at falmouth.ac.uk/student-funding
How Much are Tuition Fees? Tuition fees for students starting in 2021 have not yet been confirmed by the UK government. Most UK students don’t have to pay for fees up-front. If you successfully apply to the Student Loans Company for a fee loan they’ll pay tuition fees directly on your behalf.
Our fees for September 2021 entry will be published in autumn 2020 and will be available online at falmouth.ac.uk/tuition-fees It’s worth remembering that while you’re studying, you’ll also have some additional costs. These vary depending on your course (you can get a breakdown on the course web page), but typically include materials or equipment and expenses related to study trips and placements. Some costs are optional and our Student Funding team can advise whether you might be eligible for help.
As a guide, students in the 2019/20 academic year are paying the following fees:
What Government Support is Available?
UK and EU students on full-time, three-year undergraduate degrees - £9,250 a year UK and EU students on full-time, two-year undergraduate degrees - £11,100 a year International students on full-time, three-year undergraduate degrees - £16,000 a year International students on full-time, two-year undergraduate degrees - £19,000 a year
The government offers full-time UK students two different types of support; tuition fee loans and support to help with living costs.
170
To find out more about this support and how to apply for it, download a copy of our Money Matters guide at falmouth.ac.uk/student-funding
Bursaries and Awards Today’s creatives need to be digitally agile and internationally focussed. This means having access to the right equipment and opportunities. We’re committed to helping you access these, regardless of your personal circumstances. All bursaries and awards are provided on top of any government support you’re entitled to.
Additional Bursaries If you were either in care at age 16 or in receipt of a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant from Student Finance, you could receive a fixed bursary. The Care Leavers Bursary is £1,000 a year and the Dependants’ Bursary is £250 a year.
Through the University and external trusts we offer a number of awards and scholarships for specific purposes:
International Scholarships
Falmouth Bursary: All UK/EU students assessed by Student Finance with a household income of under £25,000 a year automatically receive a Falmouth Bursary, which varies in size from £250 to £500 a year depending on your area of study, and level of household income
Our scholarship awards aim to encourage diversity and excellence. For international students who can demonstrate ambition, passion and dedication to their subject area, there are a number of scholarships available. Awards for 2021/22 will be set later this year.
The For Real Award: Open to students wanting to take a course-related extracurricular trip or placement
