Developing your skill set

Your creative career For future-focused alumni of Falmouth University, a world of opportunity awaits. After graduation, your degree could take you anywhere; maybe you’ll lead a team, branch out as a freelancer or run your own business. While here, you’ll have the chance not only to immerse yourself in your subject discipline but to develop a portfolio of personal and professional skills. You’ll leave Falmouth fully prepared to forge your own path, embrace the challenges of industry and excel in your chosen creative career.

Embedded across every course at Falmouth are key components that will set you apart when it comes to securing your next step. Each time you tackle a task or a new challenge, your learning will extend way beyond the boundaries of your subject. From meeting deadlines to managing projects, you’ll have the chance to develop these ‘soft skills’ in a friendly, supportive environment, and as a result become resilient, resourceful and employable. As you progress, you can expect to gain core skills in these areas:

Analytical thinking: the ability to identify and define problems and to develop workable solutions Communication: sharing your ideas, negotiating and persuading others Complex problem solving: thinking laterally and focusing on the solution Critical thinking: how to analyse and evaluate an issue, to form a judgement Innovation: experimenting with new methods and ideas, without fear of failure Project management: heading up a project with confidence and commitment Networking and self-promotion: building your ‘brand’, with people and across platforms Teamworking: connecting and collaborating effectively, to achieve a shared goal

Harnessing the power of collaboration We believe that collaboration and the exchange of ideas is fundamental to the academic experience, as well as the creative process. That’s why we’ve introduced a specific Collaboration module that’s shared across the whole University, so that you can not only grow your own cross-disciplinary working skills but also enjoy the opportunity to work with students from other disciplines.

6

As part of a team, you’ll tackle ‘Challenge Briefs’ that reflect the sort of assignments you could expect to be given in industry, developing your ability to work as part of a group to produce outstanding results.

Focus on future skills The future of employment is changing. Throughout your working life you might have the opportunity to step into a range of different industries and careers. Our Future Skills module will help you develop your understanding of transferable skills in the context of industry and employment. Building on the skill set you’ve acquired throughout your course, this final-year module is designed to support your professional journey – equipping you with the confidence to articulate your knowledge and abilities and to evidence how you can apply them to real-world challenges. Working on a collaborative or solo project, you’ll deliver real results, whether that’s a profit on some seed funding, a professional portfolio of work or a solution to an industry challenge. You’ll be supported to identify your strengths, values and capabilities, as well as how to spot them in others and to grow your resilience and develop your ability to work in a team. You’ll also acquire an understanding of core skills, such as finance and budgets, marketing and branding, sales and managing the consumer – the kind of expertise that employers are looking for, or that will stand you in good stead if you want to set up your own business after graduating.

How you will learn At Falmouth, we know that Higher Education is changing. Having listened to student feedback, we are redefining how we teach and how you learn to meet the needs of the 21st Century. We know that campus-based students want access to professionalstandard facilities and benefit from the creative spark that happens when people get together for face-to-face collaboration. Our students have also told us this can be enhanced by elements of digital learning where it offers inclusivity, accessibility and an improved learning experience.

What is Digitally Enhanced Learning? As a creative institution, we pride ourselves on our professional-standard workshops, studios and equipment. You’ll have access to all of this, as well as in-person teaching and collaboration with your peers. However, where it offers a better learning experience, we enhance this with digital elements.

then engaging in small group work with other students in-person the next. Another day might see more self-study with some online one-to-one meetings with your tutors, after which you watch some pre-recorded course content, supported by online chat forums with industry professionals or other external guests for online Q&A sessions. This means that your learning experience has been carefully and purposefully created to give you the best opportunities, access to staff and facilities, as well as inclusive and accessible ways to engage with our learning materials. Please note that students on our online remotelearning degrees do not have access to technical facilities, workshops, studios and equipment. However, the libraries, online resources and student support services are all available to you.

Our course teams have the flexibility to decide which learning format best applies to their teaching, and therefore the experience will vary from course to course. Your experience will always be predominantly in-person, including seminars, tutorials and studio teaching, with some, more targeted, elements being online either live (synchronous) or pre-recorded (asynchronous). Although academic teams have the freedom to adapt their approach to suit the course and the opportunities available, as an institution we maintain a regularly reviewed threshold to provide a balance of structured learning activities and to ensure that most weeks our students will have in-person teaching activities.

CAMPUS CHARACTER Like Cornwall itself, our campuses have their own distinct character. This is where collaboration and creativity combine. You’ll find a close-knit community and cutting-edge resources. Places to study, live and socialise, large enough to be alive with ideas and energy, but where you’ll be known by your name and not just your student number. Our historic Falmouth Campus is nestled in lush, leafy, sub-tropical gardens, while the purposebuilt Penryn Campus is a contemporary creative hub. Both are within easy reach of the town and its beaches. They feature first-class facilities, centred around stunning natural spaces, to reflect our unique surroundings. We’ve worked hard to create an inclusive, accessible and welcoming environment where you’ll feel instantly at home. Falmouth is ranked as one of the safest university settings in the UK (Complete University Guide, 2020) and our on-campus team is there to provide security and support 24/7. We’re constantly innovating and investing, to improve your time here at Falmouth. And we’re committed to an ambitious sustainability programme – to make our campuses cleaner, greener and an even better place to be.

22

CAMPUS COMPASS Head in the right direction with help from The Compass, the central information hub at each campus and the best place to get your bearings. Here, you’ll find answers on all aspects of university life, such as accessibility, accommodation and wellbeing – from quick queries to more complex issues that may require specialist support. It’s the first place to go for those inevitable what, why, where… moments. You won’t be lost for long!

CAMPUS RESOURCES At Falmouth, we provide all you need to succeed. You’ll find fast, secure Wi-Fi across both campuses, a wealth of print and digital resources at your fingertips and inspirational surroundings for self-study. Our two libraries are stocked with a comprehensive selection of books, magazines, journals and specialist materials and feature spacious study zones, group study rooms and quieter corners. You’ll have access to image banks, news archives, creative databases, e-journals and streamed content, with support from a central service desk and a friendly team of librarians and archivists. Opening hours extend into evenings and weekends, with the bigger Penryn library offering self-service access 24/7. There are IT suites on both campuses, where expert technicians will keep you connected and provide free, easy-to-understand tech support – making sure you benefit from all the systems and services we offer. We also run professional on-site reprographics and print services, including binding, copying and laminating, to help you present your work to an exceptional standard.

Kick-start the weekend with the Penryn Campus Parkrun. This free, fun 5km event takes place at 9am every Saturday.

Our on-site Games Academy means you’ll never be short of new games to try and people to play them with. Check in for fighting game tournaments or more casual sessions with the Video Gaming Society, or join the tabletop team for Dungeons & Dragons-style get-togethers. 155 11

CAMPUS SOCIAL Whatever your mood, you’ll find something sociable to do. The Stannary is the beating heart of Penryn Campus, a base for everything from quiet drinks to quiz, film and open mic nights, live sports on the TV and big gigs, DJ sets and music concerts. Our very own Academy of Music & Theatre Arts (AMATA) is not only a showcase for homegrown talent but also a working venue, attracting theatrical performances, music and comedy acts.

CAMPUS CATERING Central to the Falmouth Campus is the Fox Café, an airy, open-plan venue for sandwiches, snacks and main meals on any weekday. A diverse and daily changing menu features European, Asian and Arabic choices and caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. The Fox Box – an affordable hot meal made by our in-house chefs – is a good grab-and-go option.

#INTHEFRAME With its Green Flag Award for the quality of its grounds, Penryn is a cut above the average campus – and home to hidden gems including Italian-style gardens, an Ox-Eye Daisy bank and a secret starshaped pond.

At Penryn, the Lower Stannary is the place to meet and eat. Offering everything from a full English breakfast to jacket potatoes, curries and burgers, and a deli-style range of baguettes, wraps and sandwiches, the extensive menu means you won’t go hungry here. In our new Café Bar next door you’ll find nachos, chicken wings and other tasty light bites. Or head upstairs for locally sourced food options in the eco-friendly surroundings of our new Sustainability Café.

A CLEANER GREENER CAMPUS

For a coffee and cake, make a beeline for the cool AMATA Café. Another popular on-campus choice is the Koofi Café, where you can enjoy a chilled smoothie on the sun terrace and order freshly made pizza until 7pm, seven days a week. You can also click and collect at Koofi, or opt for delivery to your campus accommodation if you’d prefer a night in.

CAMPUS SUPPLIES Our Penryn Campus mini supermarket stocks all sorts of goodies and groceries, from sandwich meal deals to cards, stamps and stationery essentials. For more specialist art materials and the kind of quality journals, notepads and sketchbooks that spark creativity, check out the Falmouth Campus Arts Shop.

CAMPUS SPORTS Keep active with the on-campus facilities at Penryn, which include a four-court sports hall and a spacious gym with cardio, resistance and free weights areas. Book an indoor court for badminton or basketball, or team up for five-a-side football on the floodlit outdoor multi-use games area. There’s also a busy timetable of fun fitness sessions and classes, such as yoga, Pilates, circuits and kettlebells. You can join as a member, at special student rates, or pay as you go.

Our campuses are buzzing, and not just with bright ideas. An estimated 146,000 bees inhabit the wildflower meadows, orchards and gardens that are dotted around, a sign that our commitment to creating a biodiverse habitat is bearing fruit. A host of eco-friendly initiatives – as part of an established environmental sustainability programme – are helping us as a campus community to minimise our carbon footprint and move towards a more positive future, for people and the planet. We’re a member of the COP26 Universities Network and profiled with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, while partnerships with organisations such as ‘Force of Nature’ enable us to engage and inspire our environmentally minded students and staff. From eco groups to sustainability workshops and themed weeks, there’s every opportunity to become part of our journey.

FOR A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Follow in the footsteps of adventurers, explorers and pioneers by heading to Falmouth. You’ll find a fascinating town that hums with creative energy, where art and culture merge with cutting-edge tech and great ideas grow and take flight. By stepping away from the more mainstream metropolitan universities to study here, you can be part of this vibrant community. The big draw, of course, is the beaches – and they are magnificent. But there’s more to Falmouth than barbeques at sundown and paddleboard adventures. With independent shops and galleries, a fast-growing foodie scene, brilliant bars and an intriguing choice of nightlife, there’s enough of that city feel to fill your weekends. From quirky festivals and fun events to inspiring live performances, you’ll never be short of options. With easy access to spectacular scenery, in all directions, you can take your pick of fresh air-fuelled activities. Our glorious location certainly sets us apart, but our outward looking, future-focussed community has never been better connected. Developments in digital communication and faster transport links are driving the county to the heart of the action, nationally and globally, forging connections that extend our creative influence way beyond this unique corner of the UK. Yet Falmouth remains warm and welcoming, a place where you can truly be yourself and create your own journey. When it comes to lifestyle, location and opportunity, this muchloved little town offers the best of all worlds.

FOR ADVENTURE For hiking and biking, or to sail, surf or swim, you’ll find endless opportunities to enjoy your surroundings. It’s a way of life in Cornwall – not just for a one-off, weekend getaway. At Falmouth, you’ll be in the perfect spot to access all that’s on offer in this natural adventure playground, with pristine beaches, coastal paths and cycling routes on your doorstep.

FOR NIGHTLIFE Expect the unexpected in Falmouth, where a night out typically begins at the weird and wonderful Chintz Bar. Get the party started at a live music venue like The Cornish Bank, Jacobs Ladder or Gylly Beach Café, or drop into an open mic session at Penryn’s Fish Factory. You’ll find a good selection of pubs and bars and a sizeable scene for underground gigs and pop-up events. Poetry slams and secret cinema events add to a likeable mix of laid-back entertainment, but it’s not all small-town charm. For a taste of big-city culture, go further afield to the Old Bakery Studios in Truro, the Acorn in Penzance or the Eden Sessions, for global music, dance and drama. Catch some comedy at The Poly or the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth, enjoy open-air theatre by the sea at The Minack, or splash out on a big-ticket event at the Hall for Cornwall – where a multimillion-pound redevelopment is attracting international acts and West End shows to the South West.

Have a go at gig rowing, kayak the hidden creeks of the Helford River or up the tempo with windsurfing or wakeboarding. Snorkel in cool, clear waters, dive deeper to explore wrecks and reefs or build your endurance by joining a surf life-saving club. Don’t worry if you’re a first-timer – you’ll be among people who live for the outdoors and are only too happy to share their expertise. Already a pro? You won’t be disappointed!

FOR FESTIVALS Immerse yourself in Cornwall’s colourful festival scene, where you’ll find everything from live music to film, food and fireworks. The mighty Boardmasters at Newquay is Cornwall’s headline event, but the globalthemed Tropical Pressure and The Great Estate offer a refreshing alternative if you’re looking for a more diverse lineup of acts and entertainment. The Little Orchard Cider and Music festival is fast finding fame for camping, glamping and the not-to-be-missed Grandma’s Sofa Derby. Closer to home, the International Sea Shanty weekender and the Oyster Festival take place in our very own Falmouth town, offering a glimpse of the region’s seafaring past.

31

FOR CULTURE AND NATURE Creative types have long been drawn to Cornwall. The county remains a muse to artists, inspired by the abundant natural appeal and what’s described as the most beautiful light in Britain. Today’s thriving art scene includes the Newlyn Art Gallery and the museum of modern and contemporary art Tate St Ives, both accessible by bus or train from Falmouth. Once friends and family see where you’re studying, you won’t be short of visitors. Go sightseeing to show them the cultural and natural highlights: the magic of the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, the majestic tree ferns at the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the power of the sea as it pounds the cliffs at Lizard Point.

FOR FOOD AND DRINK Clotted cream, cider, pasties… you can fill your boots with traditional Cornish fare, but the county’s gastro scene offers so much more. Yes, you’ll find first-class fish and chips and a knockout selection of ice cream (thanks to the lush grazing that fuels Cornwall’s dairy cows). FALMOUTH THRILLSEEKERS

FOR FITNESS

You may be happy just to be a part of the SU and enjoy all it has to offer, but by becoming a Rep you’ll be able work closely with your course team, develop valuable leadership skills and ensure that the Falmouth University experience is constantly improving and evolving for everyone.

SU EXPLAINED

SU ACTIVITY

From your first day at Falmouth, we’re here to help you find your feet, realise your potential and form friendships that last a lifetime. Our Students’ Union (SU) is at the heart of this mission, to make sure you feel part of the team.

From the African Caribbean society to groups for Ballroom Dancing, Bee Keeping and Women in Business, our student-led clubs cater for different cultures, faiths, academic subjects and leisure activities. Maybe you’d like to become politically active through campaigning work, or contribute to the community by fund-raising or volunteering at SU partner events such as beach cleans and food bank collections. There’s also a jam-packed programme of social events to enjoy.

Run for students, by students, the role of the SU is to ensure that everyone who studies with us has the highest quality of education and the best experience possible during their time in Cornwall. At Falmouth, we share our Penryn Campus with the University of Exeter – meaning that you’ll be able to mix with an even wider range of people, studying different courses, to swop ideas. It also makes the Falmouth and Exeter SU unique: ours is the only union to represent students from two different universities. With dozens of clubs and societies to join, along with a host of opportunities if you’d like to take a more active role, your Union is all set to help you live student life to the max.

SU VOICE As a student, you’ll automatically become an SU member. Every year, your SU Presidents are elected, along with more than 200 Falmouth students who act as Course and Department Representatives. They gather your feedback and take the views of students to the places where decisions are made – through Student Voice.

Find out how to get involved at the University’s Welcome Week, where you can meet people, join in and access all you need to settle into Falmouth life.

SU SUPPORT When life doesn’t go to plan, it’s good to have a back-up. The SU is there to provide guidance on course queries, housing problems, money matters and much more. No matter how big or small the question, the friendly, approachable SU team is there to listen and advise, offering free, confidential and objective support to help get things back on track. For more complex issues, they’ll signpost you to specialised services.

“We want nothing but the best for all of our SU members and will support you throughout your university journey – whether through Student Voice, by creating opportunities or giving you expert advice. The SU team is on your side!” Ellie Ricks SU, President Student Experience, 2021/22

Studying at university can be an enriching and rewarding experience that sets you on the path to career success. But it’s not all about the destination. We want you to enjoy the journey every bit as much and that means helping you to feel confident with your studies, comfortable in your surroundings and good about life in general. We know that student life can be fun but full-on, so we’re set up to support you along the way. When you’re facing new challenges, whether that’s managing finances, making friends or meeting study deadlines, help is there if you need it.

STUDENT SUPPORT At Falmouth, you’ll feel part of the team before you even start. We’ll put you in touch with others through a student Facebook group that’s relevant to your course or interests and we’ll assign you a Student Mentor before you arrive – a second or third-year who knows the ropes and can help you settle in. It’s not unusual to feel a bit homesick at first and there may be moments in your new life when it all feels a bit much. But there are so many ways to connect with other students and to be there for each other. From course mates and mentors to like-minded friends you meet through our many clubs and societies, you’ll be among a supportive community.

Our on-campus Chaplaincies provide a welcoming space and a listening ear for students from all faiths and none.

LEADING LIGHT From starring in a pop band in Lithuania to a backstage lighting role at London’s biggest shows, Technical Theatre Arts graduate Ned Siuipys’ journey is going global. He explains where Falmouth fitted in. I was singing in a successful pop band, but being the main lead was not my cup of tea. I became more interested in a backstage role. I found a Music Management degree at Falmouth and then Googled the place and saw the beaches. It looked beautiful, so I moved to the UK to start my studies. When I saw the sound and lighting at a University gig, I wanted to be more hands-on. The AMATA technicians let me turn the whole rig on and play with the lights, and I started learning in my free time. I was often still at AMATA when it closed at 10pm. I then helped with gigs and open mic nights at the University’s Stannary Bar, working with big local artists such as Hockeysmith and Milo Gore. Swopping to Falmouth’s new Technical Theatre Arts degree was a good decision. It gave me a great technical background. But when I graduated in 2020 the entertainment industry had stopped, due to Covid-19, so I used the time to study for a postgraduate qualification. I then secured a placement programming the lighting for the UK Tim Minchin tour, one of the first tours to start after the pandemic. I’m now freelancing at venues including the legendary London club Heaven, where I’ve worked with the biggest International drag queens. I’m working at Indigo at The O2, Troxy and most recently Printworks, where

I was lighting Sink the Pink. I’m putting artists on my CV including Jimmy Carr, Self Esteem, Rudimental, Bastille, Gabrielle and Martin Kemp. My lighting skills are transferable not only for live music but also boxing events, for the likes of Anthony Joshua, Michael Bisping and Tyson Fury. I get the same buzz before a big show as when I was singing – those butterflies in the stomach. Some shows bring their own lighting director, so I’m on hand to support them. If they don’t, I’m at the rehearsals to help with lighting design and I then operate the whole show. It can be challenging. My advice to students? Be eager to learn and willing to work your way up. If you’re nice to people and you make connections, everything is possible. After Falmouth I felt prepared for industry. My background in performance helps; I know how artists feel about getting the lighting right because I’ve been there myself. My goal is something super-big, such as Eurovision or Super Bowl. I’d also love to be the lighting director or programmer on a proper tour and be paid to travel the world.

A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE A Creative Events Management degree propelled Zac Hancock towards a stellar career in the entertainment industry. He outlines his journey, from legendary student parties to breaking the rules with his own production agency JAMZ. I’ve always pushed the boundaries. In business that’s a good thing, but for social activities it sometimes went a bit far! For a first-year student party, I thought let’s do something outrageous. We live by the coast – let’s fill our entire flat with sand. For the beach element, we put an Asda pool in the kitchen, filled with water… It was a great party. At Falmouth I learned about the power of a team of people. At school and college you’re in a bubble, but when you work in the real world you’re thrown in at the deep end with people with different skill sets and backgrounds. At Falmouth you learn to work with others in a safe environment, where lecturers can catch you if you go wrong or get scared. In the real world, you’re not given tasks – you’re given opportunities. The best moments at Falmouth were when you were given freedom, when you could pick your team and it was down to you. While there, I was fortunate to get the job of brand manager for what is now known as Spotify. I was activating campaigns, such as underground events with Stormzy, all this on the side of studying and having fun. Falmouth was very supportive of that.

jamzcreative.com

My first graduate job was with Social Chain, but after four years I was no longer chasing the dream. Social Chain was a really exciting start-up in that golden era of growth around social influencing. My video projects there included red carpet events for Guardians of the Galaxy II, interviewing Chris Pratt and the cast and organising the logistics. But eventually I wanted to create something for myself and explore the ideas I’d had from being a kid, so I left. I had no plan, but I trusted my ability. Any time you feel fear, step towards it. That’s usually when you progress. Confidence isn’t seen as a skill, but wholeheartedly it’s what has helped me most in my career to date. In 2021 we formed JAMZ, a creative production agency specialising in fashion, travel and music. As a company, we don’t want to become a powerhouse – we want to stay agile, doing things that push us creatively and also challenge the brand. What’s going to make people stop and watch something? What’s exciting? That’s what defines us. My advice? Don’t get distracted. Don’t forget your passion and why you went to study at university. Figure out what it is you want to do and don’t let anything get in the way of that.

Sophie Melissa, How to Talk About Race, Inside Housing

DRAWING INSPIRATION Creating content for Vogue, Liberty London, Penguin, Harper Collins, Hardie Grant, WIRED and BA is all in a day’s work for Illustration graduate Sophie Melissa. She reveals how she sharpened her skills at Falmouth. I chose Falmouth because the Illustration alumni were really inspiring. The course has such a strong reputation in the illustration world and I loved the fact that it was so hands-on. I also loved the idea of studying five minutes from the beach. Falmouth more than lived up to my expectations and quickly became my home. New friends soon felt like family. I used my first year to experiment and to soak up everything we were learning. We covered all areas of the industry and what to expect afterwards. In my third year, it was as if a switch flipped and I felt confident in my style. I spent a day in the print-making studio and scanned all the textures I’d made to convert them into Photoshop brushes; I still use many of them today. Workwise, this was a major turning point. A third-year trip to New York was a real highlight. It gave me so much confidence and even more determination to get work as an illustrator ‘out in the wild’. With help from tutors, we organised visits to top agencies, publishers and newspapers. It was surreal to sit with the art director of The New Yorker, at the top of the One World Trade Centre, and hear such positive comments about the work I’d made at my desk in Cornwall. We exhibited our best work at New Designers in London, in the summer of graduation, where I was awarded the Society of Artists Agents (SAA) Associate Prize for New Talent sophiemelissa.com

in Illustration. This included six months with a top illustration agency. I chose to work with New Division, now named Meiklejohn, and within weeks landed my first editorial commission. They chose to keep working with me and I haven’t looked back since. As a big book lover, my favourite work is cover illustration. There’s nothing more exciting than representing someone’s story and seeing your work in a bookstore. My covers include Voices of the Windrush Generation, No Such Thing as Perfect and the cookbook Hangover Helper, which featured a full-page illustration for every recipe. Illustration is a competitive industry, but after my degree I felt fully prepared. At Falmouth you’re surrounded by people who share your passion and the course tutors are so experienced in the industry. I took full advantage of their feedback. In fact, I wouldn’t have my career without them.

LIVING IN STYLE Travelling worldwide to create video campaigns for the likes of Gucci and Prada is a way of life for Fashion Photography graduate Alice Kasinather-Jones. She offers a behindthe-scenes glimpse of a junior producer’s role. I work with fashion brands, from the first creative idea to the end of the shoot and post production. We’re often the problemsolvers when it comes to achieving a creative vision within a timeline and budget. My responsibilities include negotiating deals with hair and make-up artists, set designers and crews, organising travel logistics and coordinating the shoot on-set. Every project is a unique experience, working with different teams and brands and often in different countries. I was inspired by talks from industry professionals. Falmouth’s Fashion Photography course is very industry focused and we were encouraged from the outset to become involved with the fashion world through internships, placements and work experience. Collaborating with companies on modules and projects also taught me a lot about what to expect when I joined the industry myself.

Fashion production is fast-paced and often intense, which I love. The hours can be long and the workload is occasionally overwhelming, but it’s all worthwhile when you see the final product. My work so far has taken me all over the world. My favourite project was the Prada leather goods campaign, where we worked with the model Hunter Schafer in Los Angeles. We’ve also done some great shoots with Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. It’s bizarre that I’ve now worked with some of the photographers I studied at university – big names in the industry, including Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Lachlan Bailey, Alasdair McLellan and David Sims. It all started in Falmouth. I had thought that being in a big city would be best for something fashion-based, but I visited various universities on open days and Falmouth’s Fashion Photography course was by far the most impressive I saw – from the facilities to the lecturers and the curriculum. Studying there was 100% the right decision.

From the second I started at Falmouth I was looking for chances to boost my prospects. I did an internship in a summer break at Big Sky Studios, after work experience there in my second year. I felt pretty confident of getting a job there after university finished and that’s exactly what happened. I’ve since moved to work at Partner Films. It’s my dream job.

Madison Riley, The Sanctuary

AHEAD OF THE GAME A degree in Game Development: Art gave Madison Riley a racing start in the industry. Her modelling skills are now featuring in high-profile games such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered. I loved the campus and the general vibe when I visited Falmouth. I’d heard lots of great things from students in the year above me, as we’d known each other from Priestley College where I’d completed a BTEC in Games Design. The Falmouth course seemed to be the best in terms of gaining relevant experience for the career I wanted. The Games Academy building was a brilliant facility to learn in. Other students and peers were wonderful at showing us different techniques and offering feedback to help us improve. The showcases and events the Academy put on were a real highlight – a chance for students to get together and celebrate each other’s work. When I began exploring 3D environment art, my passion for stylised modelling emerged. I knew it was the area I wanted to focus on, but I researched multiple styles and methods of modelling to maintain a well-rounded portfolio. The lecturers were really helpful in guiding me towards resources and learning opportunities to develop my skills. Graduating during the pandemic was a challenge, but I just kept chipping away at finding a job. Freelancing for an indie game was a great opportunity to practice time management and some of the other skills I’d gained on the course.

By working on my projects and sharing updates on social media, I got an interview with Lucid Games. I’ve been there ever since, working alongside some super-talented game developers. I have a soft spot for Destruction AllStars, as this was my first project. I’m passionate about game art and I really enjoy the creative process. I usually start by finding inspiration and reference, and then drafting up some assets before creating the final model, using tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Substance 3D suite, ZBrush and Maya. There are fewer women in the gaming industry, but that’s more of a reason to get involved and help make this change. Both the industry and game art community are full of lovely people willing to share methods, techniques and workflows and the Falmouth Games Academy is especially welcoming. The industry needs people of different genders and backgrounds to create amazing game experiences!

Serena Brown, for Nike and Refinery 29, Paris

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS From an uncertain start with a film camera to an established career behind the lens, Photography graduate Serena Brown explains how her creative path has led to work with iconic global brands – such as Converse, Levi’s, Nike and Rolling Stone. I had no idea how to use the equipment in my first tutorial at Falmouth. I was the only one who knew nothing about film photography! But it was so easy to ask for help and it soon felt as if we were all on a level playing field. I’d never been in a darkroom either before coming to university. It’s mad how just being exposed to that sort of thing can accelerate your development – I now work almost exclusively in film. After growing up in London, I felt a bit of culture shock when I came to Cornwall. I knew I was at the perfect place to study photography though and being able to focus on that in a scenic, relaxed environment was exactly what I needed. It gave me time and space, away from the crazy reality I was used to, to build my skills and experiment with my style. You’re surrounded by creative people at Falmouth and the photography facilities are insane. Success didn’t happen overnight, so I took the approach of ‘fake it till you make it’. The summer after graduation, in 2018, I just kept taking photos and putting them on Instagram, because I needed to make myself seem busy. Later that year I secured a photography internship at Refinery 29, which evolved into a position there as a Creative Assistant. Brands would come to us for ideas and I would help map out projects from

serenabrown.co

beginning to end, so I could see the full timeline. It gave me a real insight into the creative industry. You leave Falmouth with a really strong body of work that says what you’re about. I’d shot three bootleg tracksuits on working class kids, to explore the appropriation of working class culture in high fashion and streetwear brands, and I still get interviewed about that project. It was terrifying to start work in London, but I learned by throwing myself in at the deep end. I’m so grateful that I now do this as a job. A lot of my commissions suit my personal style; they have a meaning and a story, so I can work in an authentic way. I loved shooting up-and-coming track and field athlete Amy Hunt for New Balance. I’m enjoying working in a team again, after signing with an agency. I’m a city girl, so it’s good to back in London, but I miss Falmouth – especially summertime barbeques on Gylly beach. If someone asked me if they should study photography there, I’d say 100% – do it.

FUTURE FOCUSED When Sustainable Product Design student Charlie Ruck set his sights on giving waste a new lease of life, he produced a futureproofed eyewear design that was later shortlisted for the James Dyson Award. He outlines the creative process. My Flexi Glasses are made from 100% recycled plastic and can be ground down after use and reproduced into a new pair. I was inspired after learning about ‘precious plastic machines’ during a first-year course collaboration with The British Council and Malaysian social enterprise Biji Biji. These machines are simple to make and use, enabling poorly resourced communities to forge their own products from waste – in this case giving them access to quality optical eyewear. The glasses involve a play on the ‘living hinge’, with no metal pins, bolts or screws. Because traditional glasses are produced with metal components through an injection process, the metal and plastic are fused together and cannot be separated for recycling. Living hinges not only solve this issue but allow the glasses to fit a larger percentage of faces and can be opened and closed tens of thousands of times without breaking. I worked through more than 100 prototypes, building the necessary weight into the eye sockets for a good fit. The project involved cross-collaboration with other University schools, giving us a real industry feel in our first year. It was fun to work with students and lecturers from different courses, using our mechanical expertise and design knowledge. We sat with the team

in Malaysia, remotely, and received tangible feedback from people in industry. The project went forward to both the James Dyson Award and the Braun Prize. Falmouth is such an interesting and inspiring environment to study in. The facilities and workshops are like those you’d find at a large institute in London or a professional design lab. The lecturers bring industry connections and we have the chance to communicate with guest speakers and alumni from across the globe. Yet despite the international links and the industryfocused approach, it’s great to have so much time with the lecturers – you get to know the staff and technicians on a first-name basis. The location and the people are what make Falmouth feel like home. The lifestyle is laid back and the natural beauty helps define the course and its sustainable theme. DESIGNED FOR LIFE The logo for the 007 film No Time to Die is the latest in a long line of high-profile creations by Graphic Design graduate Tom Brooks. He reflects on his training at Falmouth, his time in industry and the joy of producing beautiful and functional design. Approaching my fourteenth year at Empire Design, I’ve had the opportunity to design for some truly iconic film and television campaigns, the latest being the logo for the James Bond film No Time To Die. It was a pleasure to follow up my relatively restrained logo for Spectre with something as unique and apparently divisive as this design. When it first launched, some were singing its praises while others were damning it as the worst thing they’d ever seen. That made me smile, because I’ve never been a crowd pleaser. I’m just glad our client took a risk on it. I moved from a mostly fine art background into graphic design and was seduced by the craft of it. At Falmouth, I don’t recall thinking much about my professional future; I just enjoyed producing beautiful and functional pieces of design. I knew how it felt to be engaged and enjoying my work and I aspired to carve a path that placed my day-to-day happiness above all.

My work has now been seen by hundreds of millions of people, but, more importantly, I’m confident and satisfied. I like my workplace and my colleagues and the future is bright. I rely on the things I learned at Falmouth every day. The principle of ‘concept is king’ was instilled into us by our tutors. Well-conceived ideas, elegantly executed, are a truly timeless commodity. Trends in design come and go, but the ability to communicate an idea endures. There’s more to education than getting a job. It’s important to enjoy your time at Falmouth; it’s not just about the work, but about creating a well-rounded individual. Don’t be afraid to question your tutors. I think I bumped heads with a few in my time, but these moments have been instrumental in building the designer I am today. Many of my daydreams lie outside my current design bubble. I’d love to have worked with film legend Stanley Kubrick and I’m interested in book covers, design for film production and, for a wild card, voice acting. I’d say never stop dreaming. Did you know that the actor Alan Rickman was a graphic designer before he was... Alan Rickman?

It would be accurate to say that I stumbled into my now lengthy career. I took advantage of opportunities that came my way after graduation, but my employment at Empire came about when I took up a months-old offer of work experience. I thought at the least I might get a couple of weeks’ rent!

WHAT’S THE STORY? Since graduating with a degree in Film in 2020, Hamish Thompson has established himself as an in-demand script reader working with some of the industry’s biggest names. He tells us how the plot unfolded. I didn’t truly understand what I wanted to do when I arrived at Falmouth, but the Film course guided me through every on-set role: sound, cinematography, editing, production and screenwriting. By the end of my studies I had an understanding of every department, which is vital in the industry. Immediately, I realised that you don’t have to live in London to be successful in film. The School of Film & Television is a hub for cultural research and a bustling studio environment all under one roof. The passion and dedication of the course team is well known in the independent film sector, and so is the University’s Sound/Image Cinema Lab and the opportunities it offers to filmmakers and practitioners who live and study in Cornwall. There’s no better place to stay connected and find inspiration. It was a difficult time for all of us in the class of 2020. We graduated at the start of Covid-19 and emerged into an industry that would instantly change. Much of what we’d learned about the traditional context of the film industry had to be adapted for a new world of rapid content consumption. I networked like mad, building myself a client list that included former executives, production companies and producers and found a mentor in BAFTAwinning producer Damian Jones.

I worked on various films as a development assistant, including the Black-British Christmas rom-com Boxing Day, for Warner Bros and Rye Lane and See How They Run for Searchlight Pictures (Walt Disney Studios), before signing a contract to read for Idris Elba’s production company Green Door Pictures – which was surreal. It was thanks to Falmouth’s film course that I had the knowledge and confidence to study for a postgraduate qualification. I’m usually brought into projects by producers, introduced as the story guy. With more experience, I’ll be in the position that my comments are taken directly to the writer. What’s most valued in a reader is honesty – no matter how big the client, how famous the writer or how much money is involved in the project, you can’t be afraid to share your opinion. I will always think of Cornwall as my home. I’m now based in Devon, but Falmouth is where I failed, triumphed and changed the most as a person. The Film course team are supportive to this day. I don’t think of them as teachers but friends, and a vital part of my professional network.

Studying online If you’re looking for flexibility while learning new skills and widening your career prospects, then online study could be the ideal option for you. Our online degree courses have been crafted specifically for remote study. Through a combination of lectures, webinars, tutorials and collaborative work, you’ll be encouraged to push your limits, explore your creativity and develop professional skills and expertise that will prepare you for industry.

Online lectures and webinars You’ll learn from practising professionals via online lectures and webinars, where you can connect and share ideas with fellow students. You’ll use our dedicated Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which allows you to engage with what’s being taught, ask questions and collaborate. Our lectures are pre-recorded and re-watchable, so you don’t have to worry about attending them live, and you can re-play the webinars at your leisure if you are not able to dial in. Your course materials will be released weekly, in advance of your studies, giving you plenty of time to plan your workload.

204

Creative collaboration Here at Falmouth, we encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas throughout your online studies. This might mean participating in thought-provoking discussions with fellow students or working together on projects to develop your teamwork skills. This is vital to helping you feel part of your academic community and will give you the chance to explore each other’s creative boundaries.

Supportive tutors and Student Advisors While you’re studying, you’ll be supported academically by tutors. Your module tutor will offer continuous feedback on your work and will be the first point of contact for any academic queries. They’ll run a weekly live webinar, usually in an evening (UK time), which is also recorded for easy access if the timing doesn’t fit your schedule. The Student Advisor team can offer wellbeing support and answer any questions not directly related to your course material. They are contactable via email, phone, WhatsApp or video meetings to help you make the most of your online learning experience and to guide you towards any further support you need.

Our IT team will also be on hand to provide free technical support and advice, to keep you connected while you study.

The right balance You’ll learn through a combination of directed and independent study, working within a schedule but with the flexibility to set your own routine and to spend extra time on certain modules should you need to. It’s worth bearing in mind the commitment required. The study expectation per week totals between 40-50 hours for a full-time undergraduate degree and 27-33 hours for a part-time undergraduate degree, dependent upon experience and aptitude. Studying online need not mean studying alone, as you’ll be part of a connected, collaborative and global student community. Optional faceto-face events offer a great opportunity to visit the University, meet other students and tutors and explore course-related topics through additional activities and discussions. You’ll also benefit from input by guest lecturers and have access to Falmouth’s Guest Speaker Programme, which offers a wider professional context for your learning and a deeper insight into a range of creative industries.

How much are tuition fees?

Fees, funding and bursaries While studying at university involves making a considerable investment in your future, in both time and money, an undergraduate course or degree can build a solid foundation for your career – boosting your prospects and broadening your horizons. One of the most important things to arrange before you start is how you’ll fund your studies. Our Student Funding team is armed with the latest information on finance, fees and bursaries, to make sure that you realise your creative potential by getting all the help you’re entitled to. There are three main costs involved in university life: tuition fees, costs related to your particular course and general living costs. You can find out more about funding at falmouth.ac.uk/student-funding You’ll also find additional course costs outlined on the relevant course pages at falmouth.ac.uk

What Government support is available? The UK Government offers funding to eligible undergraduate students to cover the cost of tuition fees (a tuition fee loan) and help towards living costs (a maintenance loan). Both loans are applied for through a single application. For the most up-to-date info about Government loans and how to apply, visit gov.uk/student-finance

The full list of fees for September 2023 entry will be published in autumn 2022 and will be available online at falmouth.ac.uk/tuition-fees

Counting costs It’s worth remembering that while you’re studying you’ll have some additional costs. These will vary depending on your course (you can get a breakdown on the course web page), but typically include materials or equipment and expenses related to study trips and placements. Consider accommodation fees too, and other outgoings such as food, travel and social events. You’ll find helpful tools online and further information on our web pages to gain a clearer picture of the costs involved.

Funding your studies In addition to any student loans, consider all sources of potential income – including savings, help from home and part-time employment, plus grants, scholarships and bursaries that may be provided on top of any Government support you’re entitled to. By starting early and researching funding options both within the University and externally, you can be sure that your finances are sorted before you begin – leaving you free to settle in and concentrate on your studies.

Bursaries, scholarships and awards The University offers financial support through its undergraduate bursary programme. Eligibility for a bursary will depend on an assessment of your household income (which the Student Loans Company will carry out when you apply for a maintenance loan), your chosen course and pathway and, for some bursaries, your personal circumstances.

The Falmouth Bursary is available to eligible UK or EU campus-based students with an assessed annual household income of under £25,000. Bursaries vary in size from £250 to £500 per full year of study, according to your course. Care leavers or those in similar circumstances, who have been assessed as ‘independent’ by Student Finance, and students with one or more dependants may be eligible for additional bursaries. For further details, visit falmouth.ac.uk/study/ student-funding/undergraduate-bursaries-awards Remember, too, that various trusts, charities and private organisations offer awards and financial support to students. You will need to conduct your own research to find any that you may be eligible to apply for, but a good starting point is grants-search.turn2us.org.uk

International scholarships and awards Scholarships and talent awards are available for students from different countries who meet certain criteria. Find out more at falmouth.ac.uk/study/student-funding/ scholarships-for-international-students
